Lychee Chinese Restaurant in Scottish Borders

I don't know what's happened to this place. It used to be one of the best takeaways this side of the borders. Third time now I've ordered and the food has been luke warm and very greasy. My chow mein arrived smashed and leaking all over the bag because they dumped all the other heavy stuff on top of a sweaty polystyrene box. You're also guaranteed to be on the pot all day next day as the food is so undercooked. This is the last time I ever order.

Had two lovely meals on New Year's day. Excellent food, great friendly service. Will definitely go back for more!

We always use the Lychee for our takeaway the food is always pipping hot and tasty. The front of house staff are welcoming, friendly and chatty.

An Update for this review, Sainsbury's have now removed the recycling point due to the facility being abused by a number of businesses, so the local Loanhead community have now lost a much appreciated facility due to this restaurant and others selfish actions. I discovered this restaurant when I saw masses of waste overflowing from a local recycling point, it seems that the business is fly tipping all its commercial waste including food waste and waste oil at a cardboard and glass recycling point provided by Sainsbury's at Straiton, there were dozens of kitchen order slips with customers names addresses and phone numbers amongst the waste and blowing about on the road, (pics). despite contacting the business and giving them the opportunity to stop this illegal activity, they have continued to dump their kitchen food waste and packaging creating a rat infestation issue at this site.

Got a home delivery I had Sliced Beef with Tomatoes & Onions with Boiled Rice. While my Son had Special Fried Rice ( Dry ). Unfortunately the SFR was far to dry so much so he found it almost impossible to swallow. He could only have it with a large swig of juice at the same time. After a few mouth fulls he gave up as a bad job & binned the food.. Not at all sure we will order from here again...

Amazing Chinese restaurant,the food is always good and the chilli prawns starter is to die for.the lady who runs the restaurant is so lovely and friendly and takes time to chat to the customers. I live in London but always visit this restaurant everytime I'm in the area, highly recommend

I went to this restaurant with my family hoping that the food would've provided us with some much-needed comfort. Everything was going so well for us from the start after we had our starters and mains at the same standard like you find in any other place with the speedy service on store. However, when we ordered our banana fritters, things went a bit downhill for us as we were in for a long wait for it come to our table. The reason behind it was relatively simple! There were two members of staff serving the customers on the night, with the chef from the kitchen temporarily added to the crew assisting them whenever possible. Furthermore, I caught wind of one of the customers on another table in the same boat as I was when they asked for their food. What I overheard from the staff member was that they were low on numbers at the moment and they were playing catch up with the number of food orders piling up in the kitchen as the place gradually built up of other customers. If there were four staff members working instead of two, then that would be a real improvement. That's my only drawback to what was a mediocre night for me! Aside that, the food tasted very nice and I would still recommend anyone coming to Lychee and eat there in the near future!

Everything was incredible - we went for a couple of non 'standard' dishes such as hot pot, which was brilliant. Genuine quality and wonderful quantity! Perfect after a day's biking or hiking.

My husband and I visited this restaurant on 14/09/21. We were greeted by a lovely young lady named Rebecca. Showed us to our table explained the menu took our drinks order. Also asked if we prefer chop sticks or cutlery. Food arrived fairly quick and was of very good quality. Main course portions are rather large so couldn't manage to eat it all. Only criticism is the restaurant lacks a bit of atmosphere back ground music would be nice as you are listening yo other people's conversations Would definitely visit again if we're in the area

A nice restaurant with friendly staff and a good range on the menu. My partner and I agreed that there was plenty of spice in our choices and this can be a failing of many places who like to keep things bland. The one down side was that I felt the Sichuan dish tasted more like sweet chilli than Sichuan pepper but it was still very tasty.

Phoned for delivery and mentioned a couple of allergies when ordering. Chef was able to prep the full meal within 25 minutes allergen free (despite the dish usually containing the allergen). Best customer service regarding allergies ever experienced at a takeaway, would recommend! So impressed with quality and speed and will definitely be returning!

i was in here on saturday night for a nice meal or so i thought, there was shouting and swearing coming from kitchen, a customer was in shop after being overcharged and after lots of going back and forth the person in kitchen was shouting about customer who had clearly been overcharged the customer hearing this told the girl behind the counter that she would not be back the poor lady apologies,then the said lady was told by the young lass she was getting sacked she seemed the only one in shop who cared about the customer resulting in her walking out.shes well rid i say. well our meal was the most pleasant meal I've ever had and would not recommend this place to anyone who wants a nice quiet meal. however the food was good

Munchie Box with an extra portion of Salt & Pepper Ribs, from order to delivery at door 20 minutes, the food was piping hot, delicious, well worth the price approx £22.. Visiting Peebles with a friend for the weekend and had dinner here on the Sunday. We were the only diners but the food was excellent as was the service.

Having been a regular over the years, sadly the most recent experience will be the last.Having phoned an order, I was told it would be 25 mins. Arriving in time,I had to wait a further 30 mins until it was ready.The food used to be worth the wait but sadly has went into decline as well.I ordered a special curry, which had lumps of curry paste throughout. The boiled rice was stodgy and overall not a pleasant experience at all. Sadly won’t be back.

Food is pretty good in general. The place is understaffed. This results in huge wait times on busy nights, especially Saturday's. The deliveries take ages because the manager does multiple deliveries at once and prioritises pick-ups. No atmosphere at all in the restaurant, it's almost always empty apart from a little girl who is always smiling and playing on one of the tables.

I enjoy a take away from here. Not usually busy for sit in.

I placed the same order twice because the first one was canceled, when they finally arrived they claimed I had to pay 3 pounds more for the change of residence, claiming that I live in eddelston when the post code is peebles. after this episode they left without giving me my food and without giving me back my money. with doing also very rude. I ask for compensation

Went there with family and loved the authentic food and excellent service. We were just passing through but will definitely go again if we are ever in Peebles again. Highly recommended !

Ordered a delivery tonight - front of house staff were nice on the phone. Food was alright but not worth the price (nearly £30 and no prawn crackers) but we won’t be ordering a delivery again. The delivery driver phoned around the estimated delivery time, didn’t say hello just “do you want your Chinese or not?” I said “yes sorry are you at the door?” (we hadn’t heard a knock) he replied “well I was”. He came back, my partner answered the door and the driver didn’t say anything, just handed over the food and gave the change. We weren’t told how much the order was so just trusted the change was right. Not impressed, won’t be ordering again.

Have ordered takeaways here several times and found the waiting times and quality of the food variable. Ordered one a week ago and it was dreadful, lemon chicken appeared to have been left over from previous day, it was inedible - like chewing old boots, prawn crackers not with order though were paid for. Friend had prawn toast which was soggy in middle and hard as a brick round outside - probably also left over from previous day. So disappointing as used to be better.

The food from here is usually good but waiting times are unacceptable. I ordered about 2.30 hours ago and still waiting despite chasing up.ill see if it arrives but will go to happy days in Innerleithen. It’s like the business owner doesn’t care any mor as was always efficient before. Shame really!

I ordered a takeaway to be collected this evening and my order was taken over the phone and I was told it would be around 25 mins. I got there to find that it wasn’t ready, which was absolutely fine so I sat down to wait. Whilst I was waiting on my food one of the front of house staff came out from the kitchen and was talking about the chef (who was a woman) and how she had been shouting at her to get something from the supermarket next door, the young girl was unsure of what the chef was asking for so asked the other girl working there to go into the kitchen and ask again what was needed. When one of the girls went back into the kitchen I could hear the chef swearing and shouting at the young girl, there was also other people in the restaurant waiting for takeaways and they heard this too. I found this to be absolutely disgusting behaviour and the poor girl was obviously upset at the situation. Disgusting behaviour treating your staff that way. Will not be eating here again.

Absolutely disgusting little restaurant. Decor really poor with electrical wires hanging and lights hanging off ceiling. Carpets filthy. Been twice, second time to give the benefit of the doubt. But second time was worse. No customers, no atmosphere, no staff to care.

Piping hot quick delivery ..great!! Discovered this way of getting a Chinese meal without leaving the house..this is extremely useful on a cold wintry night .

Second time we've eaen here and the food is excellent. Strangely enough we were the only ones in the restaurant on a Saturday night but the carry out service was non stop while we were there.

I ordered a delivery over the phone. A kind young lady on the other side of the phone took my name, address and order. The food was over 30 minutes late and so I arrived at the restaraunt in order to collect it myself. I talked to the rude, arrogant manager and she claimed 'Good food takes time.' Unfortunately this hostile service lead me to cancel my order. I'm sure the food is good but good food should not take over 1 hour and a half to be made and sent to an address no longer then 10 minutes away. I recomment commuting the manderin instead. A 5 minute walk away.

We are regular customers but this is wearing thin!! Constantly have to wait longer than told for order.

SERVICE SO SLOW DO NOT GO . You would be quicker cooking it yourself . The place is quiet and it takes about 45 mins to get your food. staff are poor basically kids . cheap and not got a clue. They let down the business. Hopeless all round. Food tastes ok and is fine but not worth going in. Its Quicker going to sainsburys next door and then cooking it yourself. Avoid.

Ordered a take away from here on my way home. Service was excellent and the food was amazing. We ordered: shredded beef in a honey and chilli sauce beef and mushroom dish. Will be back to try other products from the menu.

We ate here on a quiet Tuesday. We were the only customers in the restaurant. But there were locals in collecting takeaways.

We regularly order a take away from this restaurant. They generally get their wait times wrong, but can be tolerated.

Visited on Sunday evening and the Restaurant was empty .We were shown 2 menus and chose off the buffet menu after being told that we could chose as many starters or mains as we wanted for 16.90 each.

We haven’t eaten here for sometime and in the past it was excellent not so today. The staff were polite but the food took forever to come and when it did the chicken satay starter was dry and the sauce was salty. The chicken curry we ordered was fine but the crispy beef came with a sauce that had chilli’s in it. If I had known they were in it I would have ordered something else, so I think it’s time to update the menu. To be honest the place looks really tired now. We won’t be back and we definitely don’t recommend.

Like a few places in Peebles, this restaurant has limited staff on during the week. But young Alex did a sterling job looking after us. He looked after a group of 20 of our golfers the night before.

We were greeted by three friendly members of staff and although the restaurant was empty were shown to a table in the far away corner. We ordered drinks and our meal. The drinks arrived promptly and when the waiter was placing mine on the table it spilled. He made no apology or attempt to clean up just walked back to the counter at the front door and chatted with the other two members of staff. The restaurant also does take away and this appears to be the greatest part of their business.

Great welcoming to the restaurant 2 staff cleaning the front areas. Front staff very welcoming and customer service 1st class. Was a bit concerned with all the negative comments on here. Food was amazing and service quick.

Very disappointed with the service, food was incredibly slow and when I eventually got our takeaway home the order was wrong. The fact that I’d already had a delay in getting my order didn’t fill me with hope of a quick correction and I was right. I phoned to report that my order was wrong and was met with ‘we’re very busy tonight, you could come back and get the correct meals but it’ll be quite a while’ really? No apologies, no offer to fix their mistakes straight away, just, they’re very busy so take what you get.

Food is good. Quoted 45 minutes delivery time. 2 hours and a phone call later, food still not here. Called to cancel but was assured that it would arrive shortly. Low and behold it was here 10 minutes later and piping hot (just made). A lot of people, including my family, have had this problem in past. I felt very bad for my son as it was his Mother’s Day treat to me. He was gutted. Will NEVER use again.

First class selection of dishes, quick efficient service, and very pleasant staff. The sweet and sour, and ginger and spring onions dishes were excellent, however it did seem a little pricey but the quality made up for this.

Great food but service can slip sometimes when busy. Still my carry-out of choice favourite though.

Uiteindelijk toch maar een uitzondering gemaakt, in plaats van eetgelegenheden met Britse keuken, de chinees geprobeerd. Gelegen aan een klein winkelstraatje is het makkelijk te vinden. Helaas geen eigen parkeergelegenheid aanwezig maar na 18:00 is er volop parkeerruimte in de buurt aanwezig. Personeel is uiterst vriendelijk, de sfeer is wat minder. Wat minder licht en de sfeer wordt beter. Het eten is ook goed verzorgd maar wel krap bemeten. Let op, de meeste gerechten worden exclusief rijst/bami geserveerd, dit dient apart te worden besteld. De keuze aan bieren is beperkt, slechts 2 soorten. De prijzen zijn acceptabel.

We live half a mile away and delivery is £2. We got a call 45 mins later saying our delivery charge would be an extra £4.50 as we 'don't live in Peebles' We actually do live in Peebles and explained this over and over. Actually drove there myself (took 4 minutes) and had to pick it up. Now I need to wait for the money to go back in my account. They have actually delivered here at least 4 times before and their food is great. So this was really disappointing.

After calling to complain I was told it could be changed but I would be charged £2.70 at the door. The food is good but organisation and management not up to much.l

This meal was meant to be a celebratory meal for exams sadly it was very delayed and we were starving by the end. Took nearly 2 hours (minus 5-10 minutes) to arrive. No compensation offered when rung up after 1.5 hrs just that they were very busy. They did ring us back regarding allergies to confirm things but that only took 10 min max.

Yo he tenido varias de lichi y cada comprada ha sido genial. La cantidad de comida para el precio es inmejorable en otro lugar. Recientemente, también decidió sentarse y el restaurante es limpio y acogedor. El personal era también amable y acogedor. Se lo recomendaría a cualquiera de la zona.

Hacen un buffet los domingos por 15 libras por tanto como se puede, pero ten cuidado, si pides mucho y no puede comer todo se le cobrará el 30% adicional si usted deja comida y no se puede llevar una bolsa de sobrado

We were out for a drive looking for somewhere to eat when we came across this little chinese restaurant. It was really empty but it was a weeknight. We were quickly shown to a table and our drinks order was taken. When the drinks arrived we ordered our food and it arrived very promptly from the kitchen. My dad had the sizzling steak which arrived gloriously on a sizzling platter, and he really enjoyed it! My mum and husband both ordered the sweet and sour chicken which was lovely! I ordered the duck in plum sauce and while the sauce was lovely, there was something i didnt like about the duck meat, however my mum and dad both enjoyed what was left of mine so it must have just been personal taste! The prices were a little high given that the dishes did not include rice and this had to be ordered however overall it was a very nice place to eat.

Called in again this year for a meal, and received the same excellent service as last year a few more add ons to the menu,beautiful food as good as any in London but not even half the price cannot fault this restaurant and service with a smile... 5 star

Ordered a delivery for the family. The food was, in my opinion, reasonably priced.The delivery took no time at all. They allowed around 30-40 minutes for delivery, but, they were there in 20 minutes.The delivery driver was nice and friendly, the food was beautifully fresh and hot. The portion sizes are more than enough to fill you up.I can 100% recommend this place next time you fancy a Chinese meal.

On arriving home the chicken in Peking sauce turned out to be something quite differant, rather than fuss and trail back to the restaurant to change it to the correct dish I decided to give it a try. This was lemon chicken as far as I was able to tell, the meat was chewy and dry and somewhat lacked flavour. I have for a long time purchased take away from the lychee and recommended to friends but the last few orders have not lived up to expectations and I'm not sure I will return
