Unpretentious excellence. Dropped in unplanned to wait out some motorway traffic and hopefully get a bite to eat. Very warmly greeted on entry by a charming and personable landlady, in a characterful low-ceilinged, wood-pannelled bar with real flames in the hearth and several excellent real ales on the bar. Table 1 is a delightful little corner for the lone diner, and a splendid, chatty yet efficient young man brought me a really superb fish and chips. Homemade minted mushy peas and tartare sauce set off the perfectly cooked whale in crispy batter atop some wonderful skin-on chips. I would have paid 30% more for this level of quality, cannot praise it enough. Soft 40s-to-60s music played but the fire crackled louder, the clientele ranged from academics to young families with well-behaved kids, the sticky toffee pudding was delicious and came with ice cream AND custard as standard… All in all a real gem, I must find more excuses to swing by this way.

We visited earlier this week after finding the Lord Byron online, searching for a dog friendly pub in Trumpington. On arrival there was a sign on the door saying 'guide dogs only'. Confused by this we asked the bar server who confirmed dogs are not welcome inside, but we could sit outside. It was a very cold wet day!!! Needless to say, we went elsewhere!

Room 10 or Room 101?? We received an excellent welcome, told we were lucky and had Room 10, the best in the pub. We were led to a separate detached small building adjacent to the pub which at first seemed to be rather cute. The evening meal was excellent and reasonably priced. We retired to our room. We were kept awake for most of the night as there was a large air-conditioning unit just feet away. The fan started and stopped all night long and was so loud that we seriously considered sleeping in our car. There were only breakfast staff available in the morning, and we had to wait until after the pub opened late afternoon (4.00pm) to ask if we could have a different room, but none were available. Also informed that the unit was not air-con but the cooler for Coke and could not be switched off overnight as Coke had to be kept cool until the pub reopened at 4.00 pm next day. We were offered a free drink at the bar as recompense for the “inconvenience”. After another bad night (this time with the shower room toilet macerator deciding to trigger every so often even when not used) we abandoned our remaining booking and found an alternative pub. We can only comment on THIS room, which we renamed Room 101 ! It was a converted single garage with kitchenette extension and a shower room extension beyond that. Very small, you have to squeeze against the toilet to open the shower door. Just one small individual shower gel to last two people for three days, no-where to hang damp towels, 3 broken light bulbs, a badly hung and unfinished front door and the bedroom window just 10 inches from the street footpath – curtains permanently closed. Other reviews are good, so do stay here, great location, just a very short walk to the PR3 bus to the city centre which runs brilliantly every 10 minutes. Although breakfast was a disappointment, the evening meal was really good. Just avoid Room 101 !" We did submit the above to the manager asking if he wanted to correct any errors, but no reply received after 3 days....

We decided to go to this pub for our knitting meeting. We had some drinks and we were planning to have dinner as well. We didn't have time to order dinner as while having our drinks a lady came to us explaining that this was not the right place for knittig, only for drinks (that we were already having) and food ( that we were about to order). There were plenty of empty tables and we just sat down.

My friends and I were asked to leave the pub, after having ordered drinks and everything, because we had the intention of knitting while we were there. The lady (we believe she was the owner) said "we don't do this here", as if we were doing anything wrong or offensive!! It's us who are offended by this attitude and we won't be coming back.

Stayed on a saturday night while going to a concert at the corn exchange. The rooms 9 of them are separate from the main pub/restaurant. Good choice of real ales and a good size free car park. The breakfast was awesome with a nice choice of food including a full english and a big pot of proper fresh coffee. We walked into the centre 30 minute walk, but there are plenty of buses at the main road. Staff friendly and helpful. Very good price for Cambridge. A few parts of the main pub and garden could do with a bit of TLC, next time i come to cambridge i will 100% stay here again. Room was very clean with all the essentials and we slept well

My boyfriend booked us a romantic weekend near to Cambridge and I was excited to explore the rich history of the area. The location and the rooms are amazing. Very clean and comfortable, and the building could have come out of a Tudor period drama. The only thing letting the place down is the Tudor attitude towards the guests - you get the feeling that if you say the wrong thing it'll be off with your head - I guess that adds to the rustic charm, though :) It was a lovely experience, but the inflexibility of the staff and the surly attitude means I won't be going back. This is the twenty-first century and guests expect more these days than just a room and breakfast. I do hope that the management provide some customer service training to their staff, because it is a wonderful destination for a break and it is a shame for it to be let down this way.

It was a cold and rainy day. First impression it was a bit run down place, but usually I don’t mind. I arrived with a heavy backpack 2 hours before check in time expecting to wait in the lobby and just have a read there. Alas, no lobby and no staff. No room to wait inside. Just a dark pub, which wasn’t open yet. Of course I could leave my backpack there, but it would be unattended. But no I myself could not wait inside. The nice cleaning lady showed me the way to the nearest Waitrose where I could sit and have a coffee. I did, called to cancel the reservation and just went online to find another hotel. Totally worth the extra money.

What a historic place. The pub itself is really old with low ceilings and beams. The floor is on 2 levels. There are 3 fireplaces. The walls have wood panels, really is lovely. The bar has an excellent selection of drinks. Which are served by friendly staff. We had dinner here 2 nights, and each night had different staff on who were all friendly and happy to chat to you. The Friday night, we both had cod and chips with crushed minted peas, delicious. Really good-sized portions. My husband had sticky toffee pudding and custard for pudding. On Saturday night, we shared a camembert with red onion chutney and toast. For mains, I had steak pie with chips and vegetables, and my husband had chicken and bacon tagliatelle. Again, everything was delicious. The bedrooms are in a separate building which you walk under a roof so as not to get wet. Our room has 2 twin beds with a good size shower room. The shower wasn't the best, but there was plenty of hot water. There is an air-conditioning unit in the bedroom, which also acts as a heater. Very efficient. We would definitely stay here again. It is a couple of miles to the centre of Cambridge, which we walked, but there is also a bus that you can get the PR3 from the centre of Cambridge and get off just round the corner on Maris Lane. It is very quiet here. There is ample free parking here.

We arrived at 1pm from Qatar which was a very long flight only to be told they did not open until 4pm, the lady did take pity on us and had a room made up. I found the room small and basic but clean, the worse part for me was the towels, small and pretty well threadbare, an investment there would be worthwhile. The garden was very sad, unkempt, weedy with unmowed grass, not at all inviting to sit in. The pub itself is very old obviously and had character but the covers on the window seats were covered with food stains which looked very bad in a restau rant, couldn't sit there. Breakfast was average with basic choices.Wish I could be more complimentary but it is what it is.

Goede vegetarische opties. Het ontbijt was verzorgd, wel Engels, dus voor een Europeaan wellicht wat zwaar! De prijs vond ik prima voor het gebodene, daarom zeker een aanrader!

Lovely meal and service in 2022 just after final opening up after last lockdown. Returned in 2023 when food and service definitely not as good. Ordered the same meal (sea bass). It was overdone on both sides and the meal was minus the beautiful baby tomatoes it included in 2022. We complained but were not offered a refund. The chef was told and reportedly said that sea bass was meant to be cooked that way! Only excuse I could think of was possibly that we went on a Sunday (previously was a Wednesday) and we were probably expected to order a roast dinner, so maybe the normal chef was having a day off.

Very good Sunday Lunches Complimentary soup, followed by choice of 2 meats from carvery, which sometimes includes lamb.Help yourself to a large choice of vegetables all for under a tenner for adults. It is best to go early, as gets busy and before the choice of meats becomes limited. A great old fashioned village pub on the outskirts of Cambridge, free parking, good ales and also accommodation if required.Worth the visit, regardless of what day it is, as restaurant open daily.

we came here for a sunday carvery something we have enjoyed many times before, all i can say is this time it was very dissapointing!! as apose to the usual selection of hand carved meats on the offering it was a dry un appetising bit of beef and some pre sliced pork that was tasteless and dry although it was already covered in gravy as if to try and rehydrate this sub standard meat. having been in the food and beverage industry for many years this was most likely prepared the day before and re heated or bought in frozen already pre sliced! never the less this is not of the usual carvery standards we have previously enjoyed! and as for the new portion control (as per the chef behind the buffet) of only allowing 2 roast potatoes per person well again dissapointing. i could go on about the saw dust like "stuffing" and the parsnips cut so small and thin these could of passed for cheap fries. All in all it is a huge shame that we wont be returning with our family or friends as this really WAS the best carvery around

Stayed overnight here for an event at Newmarket Racecourse in August 2015. There were 6 of us staying for lunch (only 4 of us staying overnight). The bar staff were friendly and helpful and service was fairly quick. However, the menu was limited and the restaurant didn't offer very many vegetarian options. When the food arrived, it was of average quality, but hey, we'd had a few drinks by then and were hungry, so we ate it.We arrived back at the 'hotel' around 11:00pm after a very grey and miserable day at the races to find that the bar was already closed and they couldn't offer us any drinks, (despite the fact that around 6 people were sitting at the bar drinking and chatting and not looking like they were going anywhere soon). The reason for not being able to serve drinks apparently is because they're not a hotel, only a B&B, and subject to licensing - this should have been made very clear on booking, but it wasn't. We were told (rather rudely) that we could buy a bottle of wine and take it to our room, but none of us wanted to sit around on the bed being sociable, so we called it a night. The rooms were dingy, cheaply decorated and very cold! Although the bathroom was clean, there was dust and cobwebs in the bedroom; certainly not worth the price paid. Of additional note is that this 'hotel' was advertised as being 'close to Newmarket Racecourse' - it's not!!! Our taxi took over half an hour to reach the course and cost a fortune, so please be aware of this.On a positive note, the breakfast was hot and delicious and the staff were very friendly and welcoming.Overall, I'd recommend avoiding this 'Inn' for anything other than a drink. We won't be returning.

We called into this pub after booking just an hour beforehand when they warned us they had a big party in, so we made allowances. Service was pleasant and not too slow given that they also had to serve the big party. I chose cod and 'hand cut chips' which were actually McDonalds type frozen French fries as far as I could tell. Not the kind of chips I had hoped for with my fish, which was succulent. Decor was OK, ambience was OK - nothing special but adequate for our purpose.

We called in here whilst we were out walking and hoping we might get a Sunday lunch. What a lovely surprise! Real ales and a delicious carvery which included soup & roll and main course for just £9.95.Staff were all very pleasant and efficient and it was a lovely sunny day to sit it the light and airy conservatory. The only slight "comment" I have is that the lady serving the carvery hardly spoke to us. My husband asked her for a soup bowl and she didn't answer him,she came round from the counter, went to a cupboard and put some more bowls down.I don't think she was being rude, just that she didn't speak very good English. All in all a lovely lunch.

Where to begin? A small menu with many dishes sold out so the selection got smaller. The atmosphere was non-existant and it felt like our party was the only one there and for a Saturday evening that is telling (who did they sell the sold out dishes too?). Also very cold, with little evidence of the heating being on. I had a "special" from the menu, a chorizo burger which when appeared looked like the bun was a Big Mac wannabe. When I opened the bun to add sauce to the burger the burger fell apart and certainly didn't resemble any burger I'd ever had before. No taste of chorizo either and barely tasted meaty. We weren't asked if we'd like to have desert so we had to prompt the staff (it was supposed to be table service). When told what was available; "There's ice cream, and the chef has found a cake that he thinks might be carrot cake". "thinks.." Er, no thanks! Only one of our party had ice cream. Overall the service was OK but the food was poor, selection/menu was poor and atmosphere poor. If dining in Cambridge there must be somewhere better to eat. Avoid. One redeeming feature; the French fries were nice but these were only available as they'd sold out on wedges! Needless to say we won't be going again

I have recently been in Cambridge for my friends Hen do, which I organised. We were due to be visiting The Snug Grafton on Sunday 1st August for a cocktail master class which was the last activity before we travelled home on Monday. I booked this event in early June, and have had ongoing communication with the bar and also paid a deposit. On the Sunday morning we were all gearing up and getting excited about our Sunday evening of cocktail making. Little did we know, this wasn't going to happen. At 12.30pm on Sunday 1st August ( THE DAY DUE TO ATTEND THE MASTER CLASS) I received a phone from someone from the bar, saying that our master class is cancelled due to not having the trained staff to be able to carry out this event. The lady on the phone explained the bar had recently been taken over and they don't check what bookings they have until the day.. this is absolutely ridiculous. To top things off, the lady was not sympathetic and didn't understand the frustration caused. I had to break this news to 7 very excited hens, with only 6 hours until we were due to attend our class. The deposit paid I did get back today, however that doesn't resolve the issue. I find it astonishing that a company does not check what bookings they have until the day and don't pre plan events like a master class until the day. I would advise anyone who is thinking of arranging a master class at The Snug Bar, to avoid. I wouldn't want anyone to go through the same situation as myself and my hens did. I was left with the difficult job of trying to arrange another activity due to the unorganised mess the Snug Bar has caused us.

We had a disappointing experience during our visit to Cambridge. The steak was undercooked, with noticeable blood present, and the chicken we ordered lacked flavor and appeared pink, suggesting it may have been old. We requested for napkins but did not receive them, and the customer service left much to be desired.

Food was ok. Nothing special unfortunately. Hoped for more from them seeing as it's BBQ'd in house. Too much sauce on ribs overpowered the meat. Wings were good but they buy those in. Pulled pork not much flavour and bun dry. Service was good.

Nice food, burgers, wings, ribs and pork belly, as well as vegetarian options and great selection of beers.
