Lodge brasserie - Celtic Manor Resort in Newport

Our restaurant of choice when staying at the Celtic Manor. Food here is always top drawer. Perfectly cooked, balanced and great tasting. Loved every dish we had (lamp rump 👌🏻) and the mash is simply the best I’ve ever had. The only comment I would make, the Nacho starters. Nice big helpings of guacamole, salsa and sour cream….but no cheese? Nachos need melted cheese over the tortilla chips. Just weird not to have it. Overall, fantastic food, service and ambience. Will always go back when we stay. 10/10

Very disappointed, steak was bland chips were cold, my partners ribs were over cooked and hard with cold chips too. When asked for new chips the waiter came back and careless put them infront of me with an attitude. Both desserts were tasteless. Way over priced for the quality and portion size. Shocking quality for a hotel like this. Absolutely freezing cold inside the restaurant so made it uncomfortable experience. Will not be returning or recommending

Very underwhelming and over priced dry minimal un flavoured food.Mine particularly was vile I had to send it back.The table waiter however was very nice and accommodating.

Had the soup starter and Monty Burger for Main both Good. My Wife had the Mushroom brushetta, mushrooms nice but the bread was soggy, She had the Rump Steak for Main and the Steak was inedible, unfortunately We wasn't asked during the meal or after how the mains were, so we couldn't exchange for another 1, spoilt the dining experience.

We ate here for a wedding anniversary meal on a Tuesday evening. The atmosphere was lovely. Sat by the floor to ceiling windows overlooking the golf course. Staff were really friendly and attentive. The menu offers good choices for both vegetarian and meat eaters. We had three course meals, both eating different dishes and both really enjoyed them all with a bottle of wine. Would recommend visiting this restaurant and will hopefully return myself. I bought a gift voucher for a three course mid-week meal for two in the Celtic manor gift voucher sale. If you can do this I would recommend it as it takes the price down from £80 to £60, which made it extremely good value

We had a delicious steak here served by Bella, a friendly and efficient waitress. Would have liked a slightly wider choice of deserts. Will return!

We had a wonderful family dinner. Our server was Bella, who did a fabulous job. The food we picked was delicious. My favorite was the pork belly. It was so good I came back the next day for lunch. Can’t wait to return soon!!

Great service. I graduated today and the waitress gave the table a free bottle of Prosecco to celebrate! Food was also lovely so very happy to top off a great day.

This reservation was made using a gift voucher our son purchased for my husband and I to celebrate our birthdays, it was my husbands actual birthday on Saturday. We booked in for a meal at The Grill as a second choice as there was no availability at Steak on Six. What followed was total and utter disappointment! Firstly our table was very near a doorway to a function room at the far end of the restaurant which gave us the feeling of being in a corridor, with guests heading for a celebration in the said room constantly passing through some even bumping into me as I was seated at our table. The menu’s were full of greasy finger prints. Art work very misleading, showing all the different cuts of steak and listing the different cooking temperatures however only 2 steaks on the menu?! I ordered steak (medium) husband ordered ribs. My steak came out near well done to medium and my husbands ribs looked like they had been microwaved with a sauce poured over to disguise the fact, they certainly hadn’t been anywhere near a grill. When my husband cut into the ribs congealed fat oozed over his plate which resulted in us both feeling sick. My husband has recently been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and had taken his medication which is a requirement when eating. Now I’m worried as my husband is feeling sick has taken his diabetic medication which he has to eat with or his sugars will crash and he could become seriously ill, I managed to encourage him to eat some of his chips a some of my steak just because of the medication, however he is feeling sick the whole time. We decide to call it a day and leave hoping that some fresh air would help. We waited ages for someone to take away our plates, cutlery was closed and plates moved to one side, many of the staff walked by and ignored this and the longer we were sat there the more nauseous we felt. Finally a waitress came looked at our plates and said “too much food” I responded saying we were totally disappointed by the quality of food and how it was cooked showing her the congealed fat on the ribs. She replied saying she would talk to her manager, we asked for the bill to be added to the room saying we had to leave as we were feeling sick. We were given a bill to sign for but no response for the complaint we made, we left as my husband really needed some air but we were aware the venue had our room number and thought they would contact us to deal with the complaint. But we heard nothing. I must note the waitress was aware we were feeling sick and needed to leave. On the 2/7/23 at the front desk settling our bill to depart, which by this time we couldn’t wait to do, we were given a bill of £68.98 from The Grill including a £11.73 gratuity I thought this was an absolute joke! You had absolutely ruined our celebration weekend and now you wanted me to tip you for it!! I actually expected there to be a note of apology from the restaurant but the person at the desk was unaware of our complaint and infuriatingly told us he couldn’t do anything about it but would have to call for somebody from that department, I was not prepared to stay in the so called 5* hotel for 1 more second, and asked for an email address so I could deal with this matter. You have ruined what was to be a weekend of celebration for my husband and I and I feel we would have had better customer service in a Premier Inn and a Toby Carvery. If the Celtic Manor is the best Wales can offer then I am ashamed of what tourists will think of Wales.

This restaurant suffers from an identity crisis. Is it a clubhouse bar for the golfers or a grill restaurant? Trying to have a meal with your wife while groups of blokes are shouting for more beers just doesn’t work. As for calling it The Grill and having boards with the best cuts of beef displayed - but then only serving a sirloin steak on the menu, doesn’t make sense to me. Charging £44 for a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc is outrageous for a restaurant of this standard. We ate at a lovely restaurant in Bath the following night and exactly the same wine was £12 cheaper. I had the lamb, which was very nice, my wife had the piri piri chicken because the menu wasn’t extensive.

Very noisy with golfers drinking too much. Food was average for the cost. It was a burger bar for golfers.

Visited numerous times over the years. Service and atmosphere still very good. Unfortunately the ribs have changed and whilst still enjoyable, contained a lot of fat and had very little BBQ sauce. The restaurant was absolutely freezing, to the point where most customers had kept their jackets on. Will return but please put the heating on :-)

We came last night group of six, excellent service start to finish our waitress young girl was very attentive and quick our food was beautiful we all really enjoyed forgot to take a picture of my lamb but it was beautiful.

We came last night and the main took over 1 hour and 40 minutes to arrive! Manager was rude to one of our party. Food was ok but steak was cold when it arrived. They did take 25% off the bill but probably wouldn’t be returning! Also £15 for a cocktail is ridiculous!!!

Very impressed with the food and portion. The service was very professional and being taken to and from in a mini bus was an unexpected surprise. Quality of food was very good and all courses were ample and very satisfying.

Were stood near bookings area at front for 5 minutes before anyone acknowledged us, plenty of staff around floor but one appeared to greet from behind bar eventually. Salad poor, more like flat garnish, more chips than anything on plate & oversalted, problems with sorting my birthday cake although this request was agreed via email contact with my Mum early in the morning same day.. staff stressed & showing it, although place wasnt even half full. No one asked how the food was or for more drinks.. main waitress nice enough but had to gain attention, as nobody was coming over automatically to check. Food over priced for quality, had better more generous portions in Man of Gwent down the road, including a real salad. I'm afraid the placemats were not flat to the tables surface & thus drinks were almost flipped over, had to keep adjusting these trying to secure. On booking was handed a £10 discount voucher, on the occasion told we could not use this for midweek meals, why were handed it then? Poor show for apparent stars.

Having read the recent reviews, I was dubious about going to The Grill and even contemplated swapping restaurants to Steak on 6 (we had a Sunday rollover package). My partner and I were really pleased to find the staff really attentive and the food arrived quickly and was really lovely. We both had sirloin steaks and they were cooked to perfection. I’d definitely recommend the restaurant to others and cannot was to go again! Don’t believe the bad reviews! Try it for yourself.

Waited over ninety minutes for main courses to arrive, meals not as described on menu not all mains arrived we had to wait for one which had not been put through. Even though a 25% discount given as an apology they then included a 10%service charge. Which we refused to pay because of the poor service. Ladies toilets not up to standard based on this performance will not be back to this or any of the Celtic manor venues. A resort resting on reputation but not delivering 5 star service. Disappointed.

40 mins wait for a steak and a burger when we were one of two families eating at 4.40pmMy daughter asked for some pasta with cheese sauce and was given boiled pasta with grated cheese melted on top.My wife's burger came with a bucket of chips. Excellent shuttle service to and from the grill restaurant. Service was good especially Magdalena, she displayed excellent service skills, was attentive and very professional. She has the potential for a great future.Starter was great, steak was chewy, dessert (treacle Tart) was very bland. Yet again The Celtic Manor has been disappointing. We were 4 adults and 1 child and the final bill came to almost £200. If I were to pay what I thought the meal was worth I would probably say a maximum of £70. As a proud Welsh person I am extremely disappointed with the overall food quality of the resort. I would love it to be a great place for foreign visitors to visit and be a Welsh venue we could all be proud of. Unfortunately, CM has quite a way to go to achieve this.

We were told when we checked in to Celtic Manor that the Olive Tree was fully booked for the evening and that they had ‘upgraded’ us to The Grill instead which was supposedly better than the Olive Tree.

Went here for a meal with colleagues. The stick bourbon belly pork starter was a large slab of tasteless dry pork, the 10oz rump was about 5oz of fat around the edge and the £28 ribeye was the size of a coaster and about as this as one too (looked more like a slice of roast beef), the wedge salad side was the most enormous portion that came out of all the meals, an absolute tonne of wet lettuce, a tiny drizzle of blue cheese dressing that tasted like nothing and a very light sprinkling of bacon dust on top . Was definitely not worth the price and I wouldn't go back if it was free. such a shame as Newbridge on Usk (part of the Celtic Manor group) is incredible with amazing food.

The view is lovely but the food was pretty terrible. The taste and food combinations were quite unpleasant. I wouldn’t go back again.

Sunday family lunch and we went for simple straightforward choices. Unfortunately the Grill Burger was very dry, over cooked and tasteless. It was thick but small in area, covering only part of the bread.

Dined here on Valentine’s Day at approximately 8pm. The restaurant is very relaxed and staff were all very friendly and attentive. Unfortunately had a limited menu for the occasion, offering three courses for a set price which I believe was £50 each. However, there were still a few choice for each course. Service was very fast, with drinks served in a timely manner, immediately followed by a bread basket. Each course both myself and my partner chose was delicious. Drinks were good too and they offered a large variety. The young lady who served us was very polite and efficient. Service charge is included on the bill, not an issue for myself, but I am aware some do not agree with service charge. The restaurant was not very busy, hopefully the excellent service and impressive standard of the food is consistent during busier service.

Thoroughly enjoyed our evening meal here,couldn't ask for better. Food quality was excellent, staff were very attentive without being overbearing. Highly recommend the Grill

We were amused when we arrived to an almost empty restaurant that they told us that there was only room near the back of the restaurant. We wanted to sit on one of the clearly available tables near the window. We were eventually given one. Steak is easy to cook so they needed to do it well but I don't think they did. It was London prices in Newport so we left thinking it was a bit shabby.

First visit with 2 colleagues to Celtic Manor. Went for an evening meal. What an utter disappointment. Recommended by the concierge ( lovely chap) to try the Grill Bar. Plenty of tables available but when we requested one with a view was told they didn’t have enough staff to cover them so we would have to sit elsewhere. Had to get our own menus and once we had ordered we waited over half an hour for our food to arrive. The menu is limited, food was okay, service dreadful. At no time did anyone ask if they could get us anything else and even when we paid there was no discussion as to how things had been. Left without bothering to have a dessert or coffees.

Excellent Sunday roast , succulent beef , perfectly cooked veg great service , one of the best roast dinners you can have.

This restaurant is a lovely place to come. I’m someone who is highly allergic to gluten and for them to accommodate to my dietary needs is amazing. They changed a few things around to make sure I could have what I wanted. The burger even comes with a gluten free bun. When it came to dessert they told me what they could do for me. Just had a family dinner at the restaurant. The food was cooked nicely. I was absolutely satisfied with the pasta of the day, truffle ravioli My hubby liked his chicken dish as well. What for the kid’s dish it was perfect as well. The serving was nice and small. The mini sausage hotdogs were almost too cute to eat. Want to mention my new favorite drink. Me and my partner went for lunch today before we had a spa treatment and the food was sadly awful my partner had chicken wings to start that were tasteless , I had a mini hot dog slider that all in fairness was okay .

I had lunch here today and to be honest my expectations were very low because I am vegan. I didn’t even realise they had a vegan menu! But I was very pleasantly surprised when not only was I handed a vegan menu, which had three choices for each course on, but it was also delicious and the staff very welcoming!

Second visit, this time even better than the first and I didn't think that possible. The restaurant is relaxed and friendly, the staff are fabulous especially our waitress Summer who went the extra mile to make our visit extra special and memorable. All of both our very different three courses were exceptional, definitely will return.

I’ve had better quality at frankie and bennies. Really disappointed, had a fillet asked for well done was more than well done on the out side. More like raw inside, the whole 3 coarses was rushed they wanted you in an out . I will not be returning to this restaurant and will certainly not recommend it , 5* most definitely not .

Personally think 3 stars may be generous but the extra point is purely for the chicken and chorizo sliders which were starters and were absolutely delightful. Food is overpriced and basic. Would probably recommend more towards Toby Carvery down the hill.

We have visited The Grill many times, however it appears to be becoming too expensive for pretty average food and service. We asked for minor adjustments to be made to certain items, however this seemed too difficult for the restaurant to provide. As a 5 star hotel it lacks in many areas and we felt that they should be providing an outstanding service for the price paid.

Friendly and professional service. Best steak we've ever had, along with Spiced Prawn Cocktail, BBQ Chicken Wings. The puddings are amazing. Can't wait to return.

Our daughter booked the large room in the grill for my husband’s 50th birthday. Staff were very lovely, dressed very smart. Food was served it was beautiful, presented well and so delicious. Would highly recommend too visit the grill as you will not be disappointed

My wife and I went to The Grill to celebrate her birthday, staying overnight at the Celtic Manor, in the Manor House. We both had the spicy prawn cocktail to start - deliciously different to a "regular" prawn cocktail. We then both had a fillet steak. The steaks were perfectly cooked with a very generous portion of chips and a lovely little salad. We also had a side order of peas and green beans. For dessert we had waffles with banana ice-cream and a sticky toffee pudding. Everything we had was fabulous. We would definitely eat there again!

After golfing Roman Road our party decided to half lunch at the Grill. We sat down at a table not ten feet from two members of staff who were clearly waiters. Instead of coming over to serve us, they stayed where they were to continue folding napkins. The four of us sat at the table for a few minutes and then decided to go up to the bar. The bartender, who looked like he was the only one working, saw us and said he'd be with us in a few minutes. As we sat back down, another member of staff saw us and said he'd be with us in a few minutes. We sat around for another few minutes and no one came to take orders. All the while, the two waiters continued with their napkin folding. We decided that this was ridiculous and walked out. Opted for burgers on the way home. A very poor way to end our golf mini-break. Left us all with a negative view of things and we may not go back.

Ate here after a recent round of golf on the Montgomerie course. I'd describe it more as a bar doing food rather than a restaurant. More of a clubhouse atmosphere than a restaurant. What we ate was quite nice, but served up with all the enthusiasm you'd expect from overworked bar staff. By far the worst place to eat (barring breakfast in the hotel) on the resort.

Really disappointed with the service and food. I had a roast beef dinner. It took me all of 20 minutes to chew through one slice of the beef (did not even attempt the other piece). The vegetables were just OK. Roasted carrots (at least I think they were carrots) were tiny and way over-cooked. My companions chose from the main menu and enjoyed their meals - no way matching value for the price. £9.25 for a glass of white wine. My son asked for water - £4.50 for a bottle. Service was very slow. One waiter was really cheery and helpful (Welsh guy). When I mentioned (at the end of the meal) that I was unable to eat the beef, the waitress was really patronising. However, the cost of my dinner was removed from the bill. It was not my objective to receive this, rather to point out that the meat was of poor quality - I was unable to express this properly. 10% service charge added to the bill. I have to be honest and say that I have had a far superior roast dinner at the Toby Carvery further along the road for £6.99. The saddest thing for me is that I used some of my 50th Birthday vouchers to buy this lunch and it was a real wash-out. I have another £100 of vouchers to spend here and I would be really grateful if anyone could suggest the correct way to use them.

Expectations were diffused when booking the grill after previously paying a fortune at steak on six. However this had to be the best steak of my life. The seasoning and execution was sublime. The environment and staff we fabulous and very attentive. Constantly reading the room and responding. I chose the grill as the budget option and feel slightly overwhelmed by the standard of meal. Although missing my favourite starter in scallops and coming across as the alternative when dinning here, I’ve be left feeling emotional and eager to write a reply whilst still sat at my table feeling very satisfied with the whole experience.

Time to feed the eldest who has started an Atkins/Paleo diet and just eats meat. Perfect place to take him as the steaks were stunning, as was the rest of the meal for me and his normal mother who eat veggies. Quick and efficient service, reasonably priced and good layout to the room, with stunning views across the golf course and the Bristol Channel.

We where staying in the Celtic Manor Resort and the meal at the Grill was included in the package.

Food was superb. Good choice, well cooked, decent sized portions and expertly presented.

Here on business. Food was very nice. Both had the grill burger. Simple and tasty. Chips very nice. Service was excellent. Very quick and friendly. Puddings very nice.

The restaurant has wonderful views over the golf course so that you can watch the golfers finish at the 18th. The staff were friendly and we ordered starters. I had the prawn cocktail which was good but I thought my wife’s chicken wings were excellent. I was impressed with the “house rub” they used and so ordered the baby back ribs. A huge portion of ribs was served and they smelt great, like in the USA. The meat fell off the bones and tasted so good in the bbq sauce they were covered in. I really enjoyed them! My wife had chipotle chicken melt which she said was very tasty. We had deserts which were nice and finished off what was an excellent 3 course meal.

Visited the grill for an early evening meal as a family with two small children (age 4& 6). Our waitress was very friendly and engaging, the kids loved her! The food was delicious, but the portion sizes were so huge (ribs) I struggled to only manage to eat about half! The atmosphere was relaxed, and views over the golf course were lovely. Overall this was perfect for a family meal.

Lovely place the menu is normal grill themed food made from good quality ingredients. Staff were very good, we will always go back to this sort of standard restaurant.
