Great pub. Very close to the city walls and parking. . Staff were lovely. Reasonably priced

Bartender Lauren was so attentive and welcoming, deserves a raise. Really enjoyed my time. She’s a lovely girl and the vibes were a 10/10. Definitely recommend.

Recently spent some time in York and happened upon this place. The staff were amazing very friendly and very professional. I'd recommend this place to anyone visiting York 😀

Very dated, tables sticky, food took ages as we were competing with Just Eat. Type 1970's pub. Food ok

Rooms very outdated, but a bed is a bed, I did sleep well, parking is available but limited as is food but wetherspoons is only a 5 minute walk, £12 for 2 pints or £6 at spoons,

Popped in for a quick meal as other pubs in area were full to capacity with christmas parties,its a old victorian pub which needs a refurb to keep up with trends ,me and my partner ordered 2 drinks each i had the Ipa and the smokey burger meal ,food area was taken over by just eat deliveries which took priority over our meals .Had to ask for mayonaise as didnt have brown sauce .

We stopped for 2 nights 11th and 12th April. Bearing in mind it was built in Victorian times, we found the accommodation more than met our needs, immaculately clean, comfortable beds with an en suite bathroom. Ideally located as well, 10-15 walk into the City centre with bus stop located close by if you don't fancy the walk. The pub served a good pint and reminded me of the Grapes in Early Doors (meant as a compliment BTW) and the cooked breakfast was one of the best we've ever experienced. The staff were very welcoming and friendly. We'll be stopping here again on our next visit to York.

We enjoyed a wonderful Italian meal at this very friendly York hotel & restaurant. The prices for both food & wine were very reasonable. The chef, Karem, was very helpful in choosing our courses, which were superbly cooked & presented. We found all the staff very welcoming and attentive and we look forward to returning on our next visit to York.

We woud only stay for two nights, as quite noisy being woken by other guests at three in the morning. It wasn't made clear how we could have breakfast, so we opted to eat out on both ocassions

One of my must go pubs to visit on any trip into York I take is The Lighthorseman Pub which besides offering a warm welcome also has a great range of well kept ales. I love the look of this pub ,a beautiful Grade II listed Victorian era pub retaining many Victorian features and features the only original Victorian serving bar to be found in York,I just love the look of this pub, great decor and furnishings and plenty of seating options spread throughout this multi roomed pub, it also offers accommodation, it's just a great pub to unwind in. My twin brother Stephen and I were here on a Sunday afternoon, in fact we got here at Midday as the pub was just opening up for the day so we were about the first customers of the day so we could really appreciate what a great looking pub this is,greeted warmly by a very pleasant member of staff, after a quick study of the real ales on offer we both opted to have Marstons Brewery " wainwrights golden ale " both these real ales were served in excellent condition, we luckily managed to get a table were we just kicked back,chilled out and took in the great pub we were in. My ale was absolutely delicious, a rich golden ale bursting with taste,very easy to drink,a real ale style I am particularly fond of, my twin brother Stephen also gave me the thumbs up to his real ale. We both really enjoyed our golden ales in here before we moved on and as on every other visit to The Lighthorseman Pub we had a great time. The Lighthorseman Pub is easy to locate along Fulford Road. Opening hours are; Monday to Thursday, Midday till 11.30pm. Friday & Saturday, Midday till 12.30am. Sunday, Midday till 11.30pm. A great pub,one I highly recommend you visit if your in the area.

I visited here last night with my partner! My stay was in room 8, the room with the four poster bed. The room was lovely and clean, only downside about the room is no shampoo and conditioner and bathroom floor could do with a re vamp but the bedroom was lovely! The staff were nice and the breakfast was very good! Perfect place as a 10 min walk to york centre!

Stayed for the weekend Pub and barmaid good room was ok in need of a makeover and some tlc. Had meal in restaurant heard rave reviews what a disappointment the normal chef wasn’t in and we had to ask to have our order taken took an hour to get our mains. I was not impressed with teenagers in and out of the kitchen not hygienic at all. Breakfast was gorgeous and beer was nice could do with a spring clean in room

We stayed across the road from here and thought we would pop in for a pint and a bight to eat. What a hidden gem. The chef is Italian and cooks everything fresh himself. Salvatore, cooks, serves and clears up on his own and the food is excellent. We came back the next night to have another meal. Will definitely go back when I am in York.

A pleasant pub which shows sports. Nice and relaxing for a drink and bite to eat. The menu looked good although we didn't try it.

This pub was close to our hotel and we dropped in after dinner on every night of our short stay. The range and quality of the drink was above average and the staff were friendly and welcoming.

We have occasionally been here as we like the Fulford end of York. it is a very acceptable pub with a good choice of beers. We actually last visited in July 2017

I visited here with my wife in late November 2018 whilst staying at a guest house just across the road. The main bar area is quite small but there is an eating area at the back. The food & beer were good

Called in to The Lighthorseman on the off chance of a roast dinner mid afternoon today and were very pleasantly surprised. Despite slightly tired surroundings, we had a warm welcome from staff and locals. We ordered two large roast beef dinners (which to our amazement were buy one get one half price!) and spaghetti carbonara. All food was delicious and obviously home cooked with fresh veg (all seven of them) accompanying the roasts. Highly recommend, especially the roast dinner!

No puedo recomendar el restaurante lo suficiente. Comí aquí con dos amigos, todos teníamos lo mismo de la junta de especialidades, que sonaba delicioso, y así fue. Un cremoso linguini con gambas y calabacín. Uno de mis amigos no come mariscos, por lo que el chef Salvo le dio una serie de sugerencias sobre cómo podría modificarlo y dijo que la opción que eligió fue realmente buena. El mío era delicioso y el tamaño de la porción era generoso, una excelente relación calidad-precio. Definitivamente volveré a comer allí pronto, espero que haya tiramisú en el menú. . . obtener el savoiardi en chicos!

Excellent food - actually some of the best Italian food I’ve ever had. Amazing cook! The only confusing thing was that the bar remained unattended at times and you had to wait for someone to turn up to get a drink.

This is a pub we have been to on a few occasions on previous holidays to York ,it's a pub I always look forward to going to as it's a splendid looking pub and serves great beers.

Pub is well located if you are staying on Fulford road. Menu is varied and the risotto was lovely. Staff very friendly and welcoming as we're locals that were there too.

Stayed in York for 2 nights, the pub was 2 mins from b&b.; Found the staff very helpful and friendly especially when ordering the meal. The chef was very friendly and happy. Can definitely recommend the calzone, it was amazing and freshly cooked, the sauce on top was yum. Will definitely visit again.

I can highly recommend the Penne Arrabiata. Its the best I've ever tasted! We stayed at the hotel for 3 nights and went back for a meal after a day at the races. The breakfast was really good and we liked the look of the menu so decide to have our evening meal there. I love penne arrabiata and was looking forward to it all day. I was not disappointed. As far as pub grub goes this is the best!

Pedí un Mixed Grill, que en 2008 - plena - fashion gastrónomo llegó en la tabla de cortar. No tome más de 45 minutos en llegar. La carne estaba buena, pero llego con alubias en un recipiente poco? Ahora no me malinterpreten, me gustan las alubias. Pero no pretenda que son encontrados a la parrilla, y no dejan probar y otro alimento básico gentrify. RIP huevos revueltos sobre una tostada.

Had a very pleasant stay at the Lighthorseman. Was greeted by friendly staff, the room was lovely and clean with a TV as well.

Chicken burger was huge the other half enjoyed the bacon burger so much food for a reasonable price .

Stopped off for a drink as it was across the road from our guesthouse, was welcoming, very clean and tidy.

We stayed just up the road from the Lighthorseman and called in a couple of times. We found it to be what I would call a proper pub with friendly locals, barstaff and reasonable prices. Sorry can`t comment on accommodation or food but if you`re looking for a good pub you won`t be disappointed in the Lighthorseman.

Called in here on way to a gig at The Barbican. Bar was packed as there was a "live" FA cup semi final on TV. Had an excellent meal, well cooked and very reasonable. Chef himself served food to table. Would definitely return, Thank you

Teníamos 4 comidas en el día en que llegó a Nueva York, que eran un éxito universal, mejor de hecho más que la gran comida de cumpleaños 'al día siguiente. Found the lighthorseman whilst staying in york, popped in for something to eat and truely worth it enjoyed three evening meals there .enthusiastic chef who would explain and advise on menu and new his job , couldn't fault meals we had definitely recommend. Will be calling in again when this way.nice pint also and friendly.thankyou .

Since moving to York this place has become somewhat of a local to us. Perfect for calling in for a couple of drinks after work or to watch the football on a weekend. Most of the bar staff are very friendly and accommodating! We tried the food for the first time after the new chef spoke to us about the exciting new menu he has created. I opted for the burger with cheese and onion rings and certainly did not regret it! The burger meat itself was enormous and you can tell by the taste it was fantastic quality meat. The onion rings where almost as big as the tyres on my car, homemade and deliciously crunchy and the BBQ sauce on the side was to die for! We have since eaten again at the Lighthorseman and will be doing so again shortly! Fantastic value for money.

Mi pareja y yo a tomarnos una copa y una cena. Pedí el estante lleno de costillas, era fantástico - la carne se cayó justo en los huesos. Mi novia pidió la hamburguesa de pollo que ella disfrutamos igual de mucho. Está claro que el chef se enorgullece de su cocina aquí como toda la comida es casera y deliciosa, y él es muy amable, feliz y charlar a pesar de estar ocupados. Las camareras eran igual de amable. Sin duda llamada aquí la próxima vez que estemos en Nueva York.

Went here in October with husband .we loved this place .It was very clean and the staff were brilliant .They have just started doing English food in the restaurant and we ate there one night it was very nice and very tasty .we would defo go back again

Stopped here for drink a couple of nights during our stay as it was just down the road from guesthouse we were staying in. Few locals in and seems to have a good menu for meals. TV fro sport as we watched the football.

Visited after seeing a show, welcoming man at the bar and had prosecco in ( unlike a supposed cocktail bar down the road) those who have seen 'early doors' think ken's place but cleaner! Would recommended a visit if in that part of york

We came here for our 20th anniversary dinner and had an amazing meal! ! The food was wonderful and the service excellent. The chef was lovely and able to accommodate our requests to amend the menu choices. All in all a lovely way to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Thank you x

Visited for a quick meal on a rainy summer night. Local pub with buzzing and welcoming dog-friendly people. Food was very good. All prepared fresh and it was delicious. Had the grilled chops with potatoes done in an excellent white wine sauce. Will return. Thanks guys!!

The food here is very good,cooked by an Italian chef.3 of us had the butterfly chicken (gorgeous ) our fellow diners had the mixed grill,risotto and the pork loin,all said thir meals were great.The service was also very godd would highly recommend.

I stayed here for one night as I was going to see a band in York. It cost less than £50 for a twin room and less than £50 for a double. The atmosphere was pleasant and the staff were friendly. The rooms were light, airy and clean. Our rooms were at the front overlooking the main road but noise wasn't an issue on a Tuesday night. There is a free car park to the rear. This is a good location for the city centre, only a 15/ 20 minute walk along the picturesque river. Lost one point due to a few niggles such as no bath mat, not a very strong shower, no air con and was a very warm evening but that said these are items you would expect to pay more for. I would definitely recommend.

Went here as they had a beer garden so we were able to take our dog in with us. Firstly the table was dirty and on asking the waitress for it to be cleaned she came back with a cloth and handed it to my husband to clean it himself!! I ordered the scampi in tempura batter and that is not what I was served. What came was bog standard reformed cheap frozen scampi in breadcrumbs with chips that had been re-cooked and greasy. My husbands burger was fine but chips not much better. I ate about 3 bits and left the rest. Only when it was obvious that we had finished did the waitress come back. We explained that the menu discription was not the same as the food I was served. She said she would speak to the chef, who then came out and was extremely rude. We said that it was breadcrumbs not tempura batter and he had the cheek to claim that the batter was under the breadcrumbs! What kind of chef thinks that? Or did he just think that we were too stupid to know the difference? And apparently he doesn't need to list on the menu what is in his food! He refused to take any money off the bill. We then complained to the bar staff to be told that they take nothing to do with the restaurant. The chef came back through and started ranting again but agreed to take half the price of the scampi off the bill. Disgusted with the way I was spoken to and would not recommend this place to anyone.

Lovely decor, the bedroom was nice and cosy. The bed itself was incredibly comfortable and the staff were so polite. Me and my partner had a pint and some food before we went out. We had the Mexicano burger with chips and onion rings and it was delicious! I am a big fan of burgers and that definitely satisfied my needs. Close to the river Ouse too so you can have a nice romantic walk in the evening.

The hotel caters for the basics of bed and hot shower (though not as powerful as I had hoped)It is in close proximity of the designer outlet (bus no. 7 takes you straight there in) and to the rail way station (same bus). Had I known this I could have avoided the half hour walkLovely staff and great service

We were staying across the street at the York Priory and popped in here one evening. It was a weeknight, so not too busy - there were maybe 8-10 other people in there besides us - and it was just nice and relaxing, which is what we were looking for. I was lazy and my husband did all the ordering for us, and he said the bartender was nice enough, if not maybe a little flighty, and given that we drank straight scotch and whisky, the drinks were just fine. It was decorated as you might imagine a small British tavern would be, with lots of cool old (original) features and streamers of English flags. I think they had a TV on mute broadcasting the Euro Cup. It was just a super chill place to sit and have a couple of drinks. We liked it very much.

Stopped by here twice for dinner. First time watched a big football match with the locals, felt very good. Food was excellent and very good choice of ales. While they have a dinning area in the back I just ate (and drank) in the bar area and enjoyed it greatly.

We called into the pub on a Saturday evening whilst visiting York. After the hustle & bustle of the Christmas markets it was nice to find somewhere to relax. We were happy to eat in the bar but a table came free in the restaurant so we ate there instead, The food was fantastic, 'proper' Italian, good sized portions & reasonably priced. The staff were all exceptionally nice both in the bar & the restaurant. The chef came out to check our meals were okay, a nice touch. Definitely recommend & will come again when next in the area.

This was a very relaxing place with excellent food served in a quaint old fashioner restaurant/room (Don't be put off by the looks of the eating area, the chef is so enthusiastic and knowledgeable.

We were staying across the road at Saxon house BB and eating and drinking here was very convenient. They have a great chef and really enjoyed his meals especially the pizzas. Good service even if they had trouble with my Kiwi accent!! If you are in the area would definitely recommend.

We had a drink here during the afternoon and then returned for dinner later. Enjoyed the atmosphere and the friendly staff. We had steak and beef stroganoff, both were very good. My husband wanted to buy a particular glass to take home and they gave it to him for a donation to the charity box. Would recommend the Lighthorseman.

We stayed here for one night in early July and it was in a great location, only a short walk to York City Centre.We popped in the day before we were due to stay(as we were due to check out of another hotel and into this one) to ask when we could check in and we were told that 10am would be ok.We turned up the next day at 10 to find the place all locked up. We left the car and headed into York for the day and came back at around 3.30. It was still all locked up so we hovered around for a bit until another guest kindly let us in and we then waited for the staff to let us into our room when they appeared at 4.The room was quiet small but comfortable enough for a nights stay. The bathroom however was disappointing. It wasn't very clean and the toilet smelt awful as if there was some kind of sewage problem going on. We had to keep the door closed at all times to avoid the smell.When you flushed the toilet it didn't flush entirely and left toilet paper in the bowl which after time started building up. The flush when pulled, made a very loud groaning noise which lasted for at least a few minutes.Despite the room being over a pub, it wasn't too loud. The walls were thin so we could hear other guests in their rooms and the windows were not double glazed so we could hear people outside in the beer garden but with earplugs it was fine.Overall, it was a great location but we wouldn't stay again.

My husband and I enjoyed the food at the Lighthorseman so much we ate there both nights we were in York. The food was cooked by a very friendly Italian chef who catered for my wheat and dairy intolerances with no fuss at all. All the dishes we ate were extremely nice and reasonably priced. His friendly daughter looked after U.S. and we enjoyed listening to the light heartened banter between father and daughter in the kitchen. The atmosphere in the small dining room was very friendly. At last we had found somewhere where the chips were crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside!

A warm friendly welcome and a good atmosphere in the bar. Amazing food in the restaurant, the most gorgeous steak and very friendly waiters.

If you are a sports fan this is the place for you. Local Twaites beers plus lots of other choices makes this a very good place to watch sports.

There was only one chap working on the night we attended, and he was doing all the orders and all the cooking. He took this in his stride, and the food was the most delicious I have ever eaten. Nothing was overcooked, nothing was overpowering and even my other half who hates garlic bread admitted he likes the one done in this pub. It's excellent food at a very good price. A hidden gem in the city.

The staff and the patrons were very friendly. There were renovations on the outside but the interior atmosphere was very friendly both with staff and local customers who made you welcome. Great place and close to York centre.

We were staying in the Lighthorseman for a few nights and based on some of the reviews we decided to try the restaurant part of the pub. It was a beautiful evening so we took advantage of being able to sit outside in the beer garden and eat from there. They do a special from Monday to Thursday where all pasta and pizza dished are only £5 each. I had a calzone pizza covered in bolognaise sauce and my wife had gnocchi with a rich bolognaise and marscapone sauce. Both the dished were absolutely excellent and put to shame some of the other more expensive Italian restaurants we frequent and that the price we paid an absolute bargain. The only thing that lets it down is the location as even the beer garden does not have a lot of ambience (a very minor issue)

Spent a couple of nights here mid week. Friendly staff on arrival, the room was ideal, some would say a bit small but for the time you spend in a room (sleeping) it was fine.The breakfast was excellent, proper pork sausage, thick bacon, not pumped full of water and exceptional black pudding.Only a chilled riverside stroll away from the centre of york.Will definitely use again.

The staff were lovely and the food was great. We ate here two nights while staying in the hotel. The first night we had the chicken grill which was amazing, this is definitely the dish to try! We both loved it and cleaned our plates. They make very good chips here, nice and crispy! The second night we had the beef burger, which was good, but nothing spectacular. Again though, perfect chips! Both meals were very reasonably priced. We would absolutely eat here again.

The food was good but we made a mistake by eating in the charmless and bare restaurant.There was loud radio and even louder conversation from the kitchen.It felt as if we were extras to a staff social night. Despite the decent food no effort is made to create an atmosphere would not recommend or return.

We popped in on the evening of the 13.02.14 for a couple of drinks. It's a standard pub inside, averagely decorated etc, the food however was brilliant. We had a Chicken grill which had been cooked perfectly and was very tasty. The spanish MTV channel on the TV was a tad odd though :)

ottimo ristorante nei locali di noto pub di stile vittoriano. ottima cucina italiana preparata dagli chief Salvo e Simone che presentano piatti genovesi, bolognesi, romani tipici italiani. Ottimi vini. Ottima accoglienza, sicuramente un bel ritrovo. Menù vario e ben curato. Col tempo buono si serve anche nel giardino, molto accogliente.

The first night we had a pub type meal, and the next night we had the Sunday lunch which came with lots of veg and a good helping of meat, excellent quality as some pubs have jumped on the band wsgon for Sunday lunches and are just run of the mill but not this one, well done, will be back next time we are in York.

The lighthorseman recently changed hands in march and is now being run by Dan and Racheal Murphy. Salvo and Simone are the chefs in the carbonara restaurant. Salvo has been a chef in various Italian restaurants for over thirty years and brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the kitchen. They serve a mixture of Italian dishes as well as some traditional English dishes the streak and ale pie us tremendous. The food is locally sourced and cooked to order. Meals are served Monday to Thursday from five till nine thirty and twelve till nine thirty Friday and Saturday. Sunday lunch is served from twelve till seven and is cooked to order.

We ate here on 2 of our 4 nights in York. We were staying in one of the B&Bs opposite and popped in on our way back one afternoon for a coffee/glass of wine and sat out in beer garden in the rare British sunshine. We asked to look at the menu and were told that there is a 'happy hour' between 5 and 7 when most of the pizzas and pasta are just £5. Decided to give it a go and I can honestly say, hand on heart, best pizza we ever had!! We decided to go back a couple of days later and had a main meal. We both had chicken but cooked differently and again we were well impressed - and what a huge portion!Not sure where the bad reviews come from as the staff/owners were all friendly and helpful. The guys who run the restaurant are great - the chef will come and chat about the menu.For pub grub its an absolute winner - well done guys!

Only got chance to eat here once during our stay. Lovely Italian based menu, excellent value for money, huge portions, well cooked and v tasty. Excellent, friendly service. Shall def eat here again next time we're visiting.
