L'Enclume in South Lakeland

We tried the lunch menu as a treat for my wife’s birthday. Wow is all I can say, everything is thought about and delivered in meticulous detail. We will definitely going back for the full evening dinner experience. By far the best restaurant we’ve been too.

Didn’t stay at L’enclume but should imagine it’s great if the restaurant is anything to go by. Was a few years back now but I remember it well because it was so special. This place is somewhat of a pilgrimage for UK foodies, and if you haven’t been yet, you must! Incredible taster menu lost count of the courses… maybe like 16 or something? Every single one was a delight! The service was unrivalled, organised with military precision, superb professionalism. Scottish guy who dished out the caviar was particularly brilliant! The sommelier was about 12 lol! (Okay maybe 20?) and was incredibly knowledgeable, recommended some nice Bourbons for me. Vibes in there, such a quiet, peaceful dining room, smallish and full but somehow remained intimate. I loved every minute of it. The wine was amazing, they even had cigars, which I was tempted by but smoking a whopping robusto can take more time than we had. Also… I mean, I could go on about the various clever dishes, the rhubarb and beetroot dessert the meaty chicken of the woods course, the seafood macroon… etc… etc… but one of the most memorable was a bread & butter in-between course. Well actually bread and dripping, freshly made that day. Stunning. What a place!

I don’t usually leave reviews, but I had the unparalleled joy of a table last Friday. From the moment our party of four entered we were greeted by a series of welcoming and exceptionally attentive staff. We were seated by the assistant manager, awaiting the theatre- like production that is their dinner service. Everything from the synchronicity of serving the plate to each waiter’s individual knowledge of the 15 course menu was nothing short of exceptional. We went for my daughter’s 18th, and the incredible Tom N helped to assemble the whole kitchen so she could have a photo with them. I don’t think it is fair that L’Enclume is restrained to the confines of a 5* Google review, as they are sublime in every sense of the word.

I first remember hearing about L'enclume and Simon Rogan about a decade ago. At the time I remember him being one of the early English adopters of the then new Scandi style. Noma type locality and seasonality. Lots of pickles, tiny courses, foraging etc. There are still hints of that but eating the 15 courses feels like something much more British and original. A style of its own. A style much imitated itself. In fact, having now eaten there, I've realised many of the courses I've had at much worse restaurants have been pale imitations of some of the courses here. My wife and I had the 15 courses that everyone gets. There are seasonal changes, and most of the ingredients are picked daily from their own farm so repeat visits are recommended. My wife had the matching wines and I had a gewurtztraminer that I asked to pour myself. I won't go into detail, but if this sounds like something you'd like then it was as close to perfect as something in hospitality could possibly be. At one point I was eating a food of a very delicious and British style, looking out at a sunny English garden with a view of a priory church behind and I felt quite proud to be English. Especially with a very impressed French man at the next table. He even seemed impressed by the cheese course that my wife also had. The service is incredible. Friendly, efficient and not at all formal or intimidating. We paid £760 Theoretically, if you went as a couple, had a £60 bottle of wine between you and a couple of £5 coffees with the petit fours you could do it for about £630. Extremely expensive but by the end of a luxurious experience, felt strangely cheap.

The 15 course tasting menu is £250 but wow, it is just incredible - unlike anything you could ever cook at home.

It’s a strange place, l’enclume. The food and paired drinks are unfailingly excellent; the location and establishment are charming; the staff are perpetually open and friendly and clearly dig what they do. But something happens to you in the middle of all that when the food lands at your tastebuds, because at that point the brain chemistry changes and you hear this person inside you who says things which sound mad out of context. “There’s a ghost of haggis in that,” or “If you just have the monkfish and the caramelised Red Baron onion, and leave the mushrooms alone, it tastes like raspberry ripple ice cream.” … been here 5 times now.

Eighth wonder of the world in terms of experience, the history of each plate, its provenance from it's creation, the delivery of its service, was far beyond what I'd expected. Even at the £250 per person its one of those experiences that you are happy to pay for, if like me andyou like your food. The creativity of each dish with the backstory and effort gone into it should be put in little booklets so I can take that history home with me, I want to say I can remember each and every story but I can't I was that overawed with the whole experience.What a fantastic team , fantastic cooks and a big thank you for letting us watch your art as you painted it on the plate. True masters of your profession and the craft you displayed. The servers deliver that passion with the food repeatedly.

Having been to the L'Eclume several times before, this is the first for 2024. The staff are excellent as always very attentive but not overly. I can honestly say that this time although I enjoyed most of the food, for me none had the wow factor in me wanting another morsel. I found that serveral tasters were very salty which seems to be the norm it a lot of michelin star restaurants this and last year.We didn't stay in a room this time as I have been very disappointed in the breakfasts since they did away with several dishes like full english.

I've never had a 3* dining experience before and this completely blew me away. Everything was beyond my expectations; depth of flavours, variety of dishes, presentation, service, welcome, knowledge of the food, surroundings, wines and the understated dining environment. The visit to the kitchen was a particular treat which I wasn't expecting. My partner and I spent 4 and a half hours here and every moment was a sensory treat.

I don’t often leave Google reviews but have to make an exception for L’enclume. Expectations of course were sky high, but the meal and service we had here was outstanding in every aspect. Each course was beautifully presented, tasty and challenging. We both took a wine pairing each to compare and contrast, and the sommelier was so informative about each wine, really made the experience more enjoyable. To top off our experience, after the meal we were a bit stranded without a taxi, in miserable Cumbrian weather! Thankfully one of the staff offered to give us a lift back to our hotel. I’ve never ever received an experience like that from a restaurant. L’Enclume really is more than just a meal, it’s an experience you’ll never forget. An absolute must-visit.

Excellent tasting menu, flawless service. Whether you’re new to tasting menus, or working your way through the many Michelin started ones, L’enclume will blow you away. They consider it 17 courses, though do note 3 are snacks, and 1 is a side. Parking at the race course is easy, and a very short and pleasant walk through the village (even in December!) Particular highlights included a seaweed custard, and a frozen cheese. The food was novel and thought was always given to where they were sourcing their ingredients from. We even got a recommendation for a local butcher, which was very welcome! The staff were knowledgeable and happy to answer any and every question we had. The restaurant itself is beautiful, and the place setting was fantastic. The hand forged cutlery was both fitting and sensitive to the history of the building. The only flaw was that the lamb was a bit disappointing. It’s presented to guests as the star of the show, so we were expecting something incredible. In reality, it was actually slightly lacking in flavour and the cuts both me and my husband received were mostly fat. Unfortunately, this is where L’enclume become a victim of their own success. Expectations were high (as is the price tag) so you do expect every dish to be perfect. For us, this didn’t quite hit the mark. Overall though, a brilliant restaurant that I would highly recommend to anyone. The staff take perfect care of you, and nothing is too much trouble.

My husband and I ate at L'Enclume for his 30th birthday. All elements of the meal were exceptional. The amount of courses was very generous when compared to other Michelin star tasting menus, the wine pairing even more so! The staff were pleasant and clearly very knowledgeable. Every course consisted of flavours and food combinations that we had not experienced before - the bone marrow custard was a particular favourite. Even the mint tea that my husband had after the meal was the most elaborate and delicious one we had ever tasted. A staff member giving us a lift back to our B&B as no taxis were operating was the icing on the cake!

What a wonderful experience. My dad and I loved the taster menu. 16 courses of sheer joy to all the senses! The staff were absolutely lovely and the atmosphere was so relaxed. This was a delight.

Myself and wife ate here on our honeymoon and we certainly were not disappointed. Where do I start, this place is out of this world in every sense. The service was outstanding, never missed a beat! To be shown in the kitchen and explained how it’s ran is something I will never forget. Then onto the food, incredible! Every dish brought a whole story to the table which was brilliantly explained by the staff.

Recently voted "Best Restaurant in the World". This is a bit subjective and difficult to process the concept but well deserved. The food is exquisite. The 15 course tasting menu was sublime, no dodgy or bum courses. everything was just perfect. The flavours were magnificent and the combinations were so clever and well beyond me how they came up with these ideas. I guess that's why they are so good. The staff too were amazing. Cheerful and engaging, welcoming and good for a bit of conversation and banter. I did not love all the wined on the wine flight and would honestly suggest sticking to the cheaper of these. No glass of wine was too large for sure and I did not leave the restaurant with anything like an alcohol buzz. I was only put off the taster flight by the inclusion of cider in it. Otherwise the wines were good, but not exceptional. Possibly better value to have a good white and a good red either by glass or by bottle. Overall a wonderful birthday with friends, though despite the unquestionably exquisite quality of the food, a meal that comes in at £400 per head cannot be considered excellent value for money!

Firstly I want to say I have been to multiple 1 and 2 star restaurants in the past, I mention this so you are aware my review has the appropriate context. I wanted to love this so much, I was looking forward to it for months, reading and re-reading the reviews, perhaps nothing could have met my expectations, but we (6 of us) all ending up feeling it was a bit of a damp squib. Don’t get me wrong, nothing here was badly cooked, much of it was incredibly cooked with some really beautiful flavour combinations. My two key issues are texture and the minuscule amount of protein. If there is 150g of protein across the whole 15 courses I’d be surprised, that’s just not enough protein for the price point, which is £250 pp for the tasting menu. As to texture, they’re a lot of creamy things in bowls, without an appropriate counterpoint, by course 6 I was just hoping for something I needed to chew. That’s not to say that there were not several courses where we were blown away by, there absolute was , but there were also courses where we didn’t finish, I did not expect that in a 3 star restaurant. The restaurant itself is beautiful, as is the cutlery and glassware. The sommelier was incredibly engaging, knowledgeable and professional. The other service was variable, All the servers like to chat, which is nice, but it was a bit much over a 4 hour meal, one in particular was a bit too familiar with his jokes…not something I’ve experienced in high end restaurants before and definitely not something I expected in a 3 star restaurant. The bill for six of us was a smidge under £3k. That’s a lot of money and if I’m being really honest I didn’t think it was worth it, you can eat at least as well as this for half the price, you are definitely paying for the stars. Which is ok, if it lives up to the hype, this time, for me,it sadly didn’t.

The food of course is amazing. I am a plain eater and my favourite dishes were things I wouldn’t usually entertain at all. My partner is pescatarian and lactose intolerant so the chef could have served a vegan menu but instead tailored each dish to our needs. Each course is an experience but the staff make it all very lovely. They are welcoming and down to earth, super efficient and still able to chat and banter whilst not missing a beat. It’s hard to know where to start but dinner at L’Enclume is a very special experience and we savoured every moment of it. I think it must be the modern equivalent of a Tudor Court Feast! At first, the portions seem so small that you feel you’ll be hungry at the end but by about two thirds of the way through you start to fill up until you roll out at the end! Especially if you’ve taken advantage of the delicious wines! Every mouthful is exciting and often surprising. I’m still surprised that might favourite course was the one including sweetbreads, who knew? It’s just mind blowing how this food is conceived and executed. The restaurant itself is beautiful and wonderfully minimal and the presentation and service is impeccable. I loved the fact that it was so beautifully paced and everyone’s food hit the table at the same moment. It’s those little things that make it a cut above the rest. The staff are obviously proud to work there, as they should be. The sommelier was sensible and really knew his stuff which is not always a given even in top restaurants. Absolutely magical, if you can afford it, it’s worth every penny.

Wow what an experience sitting at the chefs table watching him put together each course and being able to ask him questions about what he was doing. The food was amazing and the wine that had been chosen to compliment each dish was wonderful. Our room we stayed in was perfect and we had a delightful breakfast. Beautiful food. Brilliant service team. Everything was seamless and well run. They were efficient but there wasn't a sense of being rushed. There is no need to dress up. Casual is fine. Even if you wear your trainers, no one would bat an eyelid. Well maybe some of the patrons would but you won't get that from the staff. My favourites were the duroc pig (#2) and corra linn (#3). Try their tea selection. It is fantastic. I loved the description and explanation for each course. Plating wasnt pompous as well. The sweetbread in the white sack was adorable. Husband didn't realise they were solid containers. Kudos to the staff who have to clean all the dishes and cutlery. I loved the cutlery provided for each course and how they pay attention by removing any crumbs on the table. The food? Just sit back and enjoy the explosion flavour bombs as you take a bite of each course. Some of courses are best eaten all in one go.

I was lucky enough to dine at L'Enclume on the 31st October - my boyfriend (now Fiancé!) proposed to me during the day and surprised me with the dinner I never thought I'd be lucky enough to experience. I had the best evening and meal of my life, and I'm so excited to share how incredible it was in this review. As soon as we arrived, the staff were fantastic - knowing we were getting engaged that day, they subtly checked the ring was on (in case I'd said no!) and escorted us to our table. Once we were seated, we treated to a glass of pink fizz - such a lovely gesture to start the meal (thank you again!). My other half requested a vegetarian menu, and during booking, a member of staff apparently asked him if there were any cheeses to avoid, which was really appreciated! This was immediately communicated to us when we were seated too, which really showed the attention to detail. The food was nothing less than exquisite - I think I said that every dish was the best thing I'd ever eaten (it honestly was). My personal favourites were the Seaweed Custard (I'm still dreaming of this dish), the cheesy potato soup (this was mouth-watering) and of course, the Anvil - just wow. I've never been to a 3 Michelin star restaurant until now, and it exceed my expectations. I always assumed I'd feel out of place or undeserving of this experience, but the casual vibes and airy interior made me feel so comfortable and content throughout the meal. A big part of that was the staff - each and every one of them was knowledgeable, good-humoured and personable - you could really see how much they enjoyed working at this amazing restaurant. Thank you for this incredible experience!

overall very average in my opinion. Yes the food is presented in a very nice way and with theatre as each guest has a waiter serve simultaneously which makes you feel a bit overcrowded 15 course tasting menu is the only thing on offer and each course is literally a single small bite each time. Some ok flavours but nothing to set it apart. Members of our party agreed that seasoning was an issue.... Only 1 course involved any meat which was flavourless pork. Bearing in mind Cartmel is surrounded by cattle,sheep ,game etc I'd expect a little more to be included. . A single small scallop was cut in half to cover 2 courses. Find it hard to understand how they can warrant the cost for all those courses that add up to no more than an average sized starter in other restaurants. Very disappointing and Would not return.

Words just can’t explain how amazing l’enclune was. Best meal ever, innovative, impeccable service. Wow and wow again. Expensive, but worth every penny!

Set menu of 11 courses, although amuse bouche is also counted in 11. Every dish was excellent, as it should be in 3 star restaurant. Wine list was on iPad, which usability is not optimal. I was asking a Jura white, which wouldn’t be heavily oaked. We got a good wine (135 £) which I considered heavily oaked. Not full points for sommelier then. Service was relaxed and first class.

L’enclume is in the middle of the charming village of Cartmel. We parked on the racecourse which seems to be the main car park of the village. Less than 5 minutes and we are at the restaurant. L’enclume is an experience. The menu is on the table but you can choose to keep it in the envelope and each course is a surprise. Attention to detail is amazing. Every course has bespoke cutlery and each dish is perfectly placed on the dish or plate. The breadth of the menu focuses on fresh and local. The offering from the farm is a stunning use of the freshest vegetables and flowers. The snacks are a superb punch of flavour to open the meal. The Scallop and monkish are beautiful and the deserts range from the freshness of the tunworth cheese ice cream to the signature Anvil caramel. Cheese is optional and there is a range of a dozen cheese on a trolley which is wheeled to you. There is a wide range of drinks from wines to aperitifs and soft drinks. We had a ‘soft drink flight’ which included a range of teas and cordials. Perfectly matched with the food and delicately flavoured. Don’t hesitate for a special 3 hours experience

Our first 3 Michelin star experience and well worth every penny. The restaurant is cosy with original features and the staff are very attentive. The food was fantastic. We had the select wine pairing which was definitely worth doing - had the nicest sake I’ve had. We stayed for 2 nights in a lovely comfortable room just next to Rogan and Co, comfortable bed, nice and quiet, and easy parking at the racecourse.

From the food to the service, the cutlery and place settings this is an exceptional experience. You certainly pay for it but it is worth the money for the whole experience. The food is superb and every one of the 15 different dishes was excellent....
