Just EXCELLENT ! Went on a Monday evening with my husband. Cosy atmosphere and excellent. For a moment, we felt like we were in France. Highly recommend the crêpe jambon fromage and poulet à la crème. Service was excellent and fast, given it was just the owner doing the servive and cooking. Had a great time !

Shameful attitude and very overpriced - We ordered the wine ‘Pinot Noir Beaune’ and when it came it was not shown to us before the waitress opened it. As it is a 2021 wine so when I tried it I thought it was not yet aired. We waited and tried our best to air it. I then discovered it is not a wine from Beaune. I told the waitress/owner it is just a Burgundy and not from village of Beaune. She immediately replied, “You tried it and you liked it”. In fact when I tried it I said it was not aired enough. She most forcefully thrusted upon us that we ‘enjoyed it’. At that point, I told her I would not have ordered it if it were not from Beaune. She then insisted it was just a “Mis-spelling”! When she further insisted “you enjoyed it”. I said we would have drunk it if we did. We left 1/3 of bottle untouched! My younger son did drink some of it. It is the appalling attitude of both owners (waitress and the cook) to say there is only a mid-spelling and in any case we enjoyed it. We are not trying to get a refund or anything like that. If we cared about the costs we would not eat there as the menu at front of restaurant has no price on it. There was never any apology from either of them for what was a clear misrepresentation. I most certainly did not like or enjoyed the wine. I left my glass of wine on the table when we left. Our mains are £28 (plus 10% service). It was very very overpriced for what we had. The braised duck was rather nice but it is overpriced. Please please do try to avoid risotto. as it is not the correct rice used and poorly prepared. It is simply horrid. We were so very upset about the attitude of these two owners so we left without having dessert. We will never return Snd would not recommend this restaurant to anyone.

I don't give five stars lightly but this place deserved it. Chef run and food made with real expertise. I'm not a wine drinker but this was excellent wine. Ham croquettes starter was excellent. Amazing salsa versa. Suck breast for main, also cooked to perfection. Excellent roast potatoes and chunky bacon knobs. Cheese for dessert. A fine selection, not quite warmed enough but hey, we were the only people dining so it's forgiveable. Was expensive but was worth it. We will return.

Food was mediocre. Service was awful. Server was unbelievably rude. If serving people is such an inconvenience, perhaps the restaurant business is not for you. Edit: Lol at owner response 4 years later. No, I wasn't at "Me Moulin". I was at Le Moulin. Small little spot, was there with a large group for a birthday party. Tables were pushed into a big U shape. Server was middle aged woman, grumpy and abrupt, and sat a latecomer in a tiny chair in a corner. Served him a coke from a can that said not for resale. Yea... The wife and I visited on Valentines 2020.Two points:1) The food is absolutely outstanding. Knock out brilliant. It blew us away. We had the Duck Terrine, Beef with potato’s and veg, and a couple of the deserts. The portions were hearty. The depth of flavour in the beef and vegetables was amazing. Beef... perfectly cooked and melt in the mouth. Carrots... elevated. Roast Potatos... elevated. Amaretto Chocolate Mousse... indulgent and gorgeous. Bottle of Bordeaux... beautiful with the beef. Honestly, can’t recommend enough. It was a CRACKING meal and the Chef is quality.2) This is a small family restaurant. It’s different. Quirky. And not like a restaurant we’d really been to before in the U.K... although it did very much remind us of the places we’d found in France years ago and that’s not a bad thing. So, come with an open mind and enjoy. The food really is worth it and this place is a gem.

Le Moulin is quite honestly the best food you are going to find locally. The chef has a true passion for food which really shows through in the dishes he prepares for the limited number of guests the building allows. This makes for a genuinely intimate dining atmosphere, giving one a feeling you are eating at a friends house. The menu may be considered by some as limited, but quite frankly more is not always better and this is certainly true here .In any event most people will find something to their taste. While not as corporate as some venues you find and it might lack the usual dead eyed waitress asking disinterestedly if you "enjoyed your meal?" the food speaks for itself. I cannot believe the negative reviews and can only suggest those diners might feel more at home at one of the many many other restaurants serving the standard Break Brothers fare.

The worst restaurant experience of my life. The food was nice, but the woman handling front of house was incredibly rude and abrasive which, frankly, ruined the whole evening. Unless you like paying for the privilege of being abused, I would steer *well* clear - there are plenty of other nice restaurants in the area, where they seem to have grasped the concept of being polite to their customers. Added after original review: I think the owner has made my point more eloquently than I could possibly hope to 😆 (see below)

It was a rare date night for the husband and myself, so we wanted somewhere special. It was all going so well, right up to the point where we paid the bill, then the owner went off on a political rant, but more of that later. The food was superb, hubby started with the roasted red pepper dish and I opted for the mushroom ravioli, terrific start. For the main course, I had the seabass and hubby went for the duck. It was exquisite, the presentation, the taste. Just amazing. I finished off with an English/Continental cheeseboard and bingo a Fab night! Just time for a cheeky bev at The Swan. Bill paid, ready to head off, then the proprietor began his evidently bottled up tirade of how he was happy the UK were out of Europe, how proud he was voting Leave in a village full of Remain campaigners, blah, blah, blah. Then after hearing my husband's accent, he then got stuck into the US election, making some very unsavoury comments about one candidate in particular. At this point my husband drew the line. We'd had enough, having politely listened to his rant, it was time to go. The guy completely overstepped the mark. All we wanted was a quiet, romantic night out, not to be lectured at on the state of the world. I'm sure there are some out there who find the quirkiness enduring, but anyone who needs a platform for inflammatory comments should be at Speaker's Corner, not in customer service!

We went for a valentines meal and the experience was like something out of fawlty towers - horrendous service from the rudest people I've ever met, almost laughable it was so atrocious, and incredibly overpriced! Do not visit!!We arrived at 7pm and ordered promptly. As a vegetarian I had called in advance, as there was nothing on the menu, so I just asked them to make me anything vegetarian as I wasn't fussy. Our starters did not arrive until 8pm - by which time the lady on the table next to us had actually fallen asleep she had been waiting so long! Our starters were fine - although my partner's starter was supposed to be 'pasta fagioli' and was in fact a sort of vegetable stew with no pasta in it and mine was a salad. Considering there was only 4 people in the restaurant I have no idea how it took the chef an hour to make this. Carrying on, whilst waiting for our main course (which took another hour to arrive!), the waitress was incredibly rude to a man seated next to us, who had asked for the music to be turned down as he was struggling to make conversation with his wife due to the loud music. The waitress said 'well I've asked the other guests and they like the music so its staying on' - which was laughable, as he could clearly see she hadn't asked anyone! He asked again ten minutes later, and she was very patronizing - turned it down slightly, and then in an over-exagerated loud voice asked 'is that okay for you sir?' is if he were deaf! When our food arrived, my pasta was covered in parmesan, which any chef would know is not vegetarian as it has rennet in it. As we had been waiting so long I just scraped it off and ate it, however I informed the waitress at the end just so she could inform the chef. She then said 'well the sauce has cream in it?' and I explained politely its not to do with dairy, I'm not a vegan, parmesan is well known for having rennet in it. She claimed the chef didn't know what that was, and if I wanted a vegan meal I should go to a Vegan restaurant - utterly rude and blatantly showed her ignorance. My partners meal was also unimpressive to say the least. We asked for the bill as we had been waiting so long, and said that we wouldn't be having pudding so please could they remove this from the set meal. The waitress took £5 off for dessert after leaving us waiting 20 minutes for our bill (after suggesting we had done so to be cheap!). In the end they charged us £80 for two courses and 1 drink each. When I went up to pay, (which was by the chef, and owner, I assumed), they started discussing how ridiculous it was that some people come in and 'have the audicity to order fish when they claim they are a vegetarian' (which I felt was bad customer service considering she has no idea of my opinions on the matter) and that I should 'try a vegan restaurant in london' . Considering almost every restaurant caters for vegetarians I can only assume they are ignorant to the fact its a very common dietary requirement. When I contacted them regarding the poor service and asking for a partial refund (Considering we paid £40 a head for a salad and pasta!) they ignored my request.

I understood it could only take a maximum of 12 covers. However we were 8 people in our party. There was a party of 11 celebrating a birthday seated parallel with us, and a table for 2 behind, totalling 21 people.Service was poor, and movement between tables impossible. One starter choice was poor, a ham and leek tart was dry and tasteless. Several of us had venison steaks, they were all disappointingly over cooked and I had specifically asked for rare to medium rare but it was medium to well done. I am staggered to see arguably the best restaurant in Wheathampstead languishing in such a lowly position. As others have said you either get this restaurant or you do not. The food here is all about quality not quantity. It is one of the few places I can eat three courses and not feel uncomfortably bloated. It is all about the food – it is all carefully chosen and prepared so that it is full of natural flavours and not overloaded with seasoning and spices. The negative comments really bemuse me and I can only think they come from people who either did not read the menu properly or should have gone to a “Hungry Horse”! BTW the restaurant now takes cards. There is little more to say. If you truly love truly food you will love this place!

Having said that, we've had great food in the past and on the whole it is good. There was a lot of us on this occasion so maybe they're just not suited to catering large amounts. We booked this restaurant in advance as we have lived in Wheathampstead for over thirteen years but never stepped foot in Le Moulin. When we arrived it was pitch black and no one was in. We waited for around fifteen minutes before I rang the restaurant. The man on the line said there was traffic and he was running late so we waited for another ten minutes. He briefly apologised and unlocked the door leading us to an unset table and said he had come from a catering job at a wedding. We didn't see it as an excuse. We ordered and then his mum (the waitress) arrived. She went off through a door. It was almost like we were in a house. He invited my daughter in to watch him cook and once the food was served we began to relax. All eventually ended well- definitely a different night out!

We had a last minute choice of restaurant because of an impromptu situation with friends. None of us had tried this restaurant before and we were all up for it. It's a tiny restaurant and I would guess that the absolute maximum would be 15/20 covers. In the end we were it! The service was friendly and the food was very good indeed. You can watch the chef cook everything as the kitchen is adjacent to the dining area. You have to understand that it's not a conventional restaurant but make no mistake the atmosphere is lovely and the food excellent. We will definitely return.

We have eaten here a few times over the years and hadn't believed the bad reviews but this time it happened to us! We booked a table for 4 several weeks earlier and rang again on the day to check what time we had booked for. However on arrival we were shown to a table for 5, we queried this and had a strange conversation with the waitress who insisted our name was Darrell (it isn't). After about half an hour another group arrived, the famous Darrell (actually called Doyle), at which point the waitress suddenly insisted we should leave! We had started the wine and chosen what to eat, however the waitress refused to accept we had booked and we were evicted! At no stage was an apology offered and the clear implication was that we were lying about our booking. Luckily our friends saw the funny side and we managed to get a table at Kippings where we had a lovely evening. Needless to say we will never visit Le Moulin again!

Once again superb food with a good and interesting choice. The flavours shone through with every mouthful.. My wife had sea bream full of taste and perfect texture, I had sirloin which had been hung to get a superb depth of taste. Vegetables fresh and delicious.Lovely cosy friendly atmosphere. We just love it.

We went here for special party and had the whole restaurant to ourselves which was lovely. It was good to be able to enjoy our parties company without listening to others. The food and wine were really good and the menu was quite varied.Being small you must book for a table, but this makes for an intimate very enjoyable dinner

We didn't know you could just book a table, we thought you had to take the whole place. So we booked a table for 2. It is small but he atmosphere is so welcoming and cosy. The timing of the chef and level of getting involved with you is perfect. It was like having your own private chef. The food was so full of flavour, both the meat and the vegetables. A real treat. Our only regret - that we hadn't been before. Our biggest delight - knowing we can go again!

Husband booked the local resturant for a surprise Valentines evening meal. Upon arrival we were told there was no booking... The manager, a very rude and arrogant man told my husband there is no booking and he would never book a table at 7pm, not even an apology or any remorse! We had heard some bad reviews of this resturant about their service but my husband thought he would support the local community as the food was meant to be nice. Im sorry to say i will not be returning. The food may be nice but i wouldnt spend gd money on bad service! They need a brush up on customer service skills. Such a shame for a place so local. We had a lovely meal at The Wicked Lady instead and have reccomended our neighbours or we reccomend anyone coming to Wheathampstead to try The Wicked Lady or Olivios instead, better service and a pleasent atmosphere.

We have had intimate dinners for 2 and celebration lunches for 20 in this small atmospheric restaurant. The food is always fresh, seasonal and imaginative, cooked by the talented chef/ owner. We have taken many friends here who then return having enjoyed the food so much. If you want excellent food and don't expect to have someone standing at the door to meet and greet you then this is the place for you. The restaurant is tucked away along the river in the old mill in Wheathampstead.and I recommend booking for lunch or dinner. This is a really interesting excellent dining experience.

If you are a foodie you will get it, if you go out clutching your internet discount voucher with the intention of getting something for nothing from restaurants then you probably won't. The chef is classically trained and passionate about his food, this really shows in his cooking (especially his sauces). We have eaten here many times and would class ourselves as regulars - we have never had a bad meal, most have been superb. Lastly ignore the previous ignorant comments about attitude, try talking to the chef and waitress they are fascinating people.

We went here a few months ago on the spur of the moment and had a fantastic evening. We were really surprised and saddened to read the poor reviews of this lovely little restaurant. I'm not sure if people were expecting far too much, especially those that complained about the lack of choice on the menu - the menu is posted in the window, the restaurant itself is tiny and has 4 tables, it's an intimate dining experience so of course don't expect to have a list as long as your arm for a menu!We found the chef and his wife who served us very friendly and welcoming. The food was lovely, and nice to have a different dining experience rather than the chains that flood this area.

Great little local restaurant. Reminds you of one of those you stumble across traveling through Spain or France. Only a few tables in a small dining room but don't be intimidated. You see Jeremy, the proprietor cooking the kitchen. The food is top restaurant quality,Point to note - only credit cards or cash.

I don’t like giving a bad review to a local business, but my wife and I had a very unpleasant experience at this restaurant. Like a previous reviewer we had a £30 voucher (from Jack Radio). We each had a main course, cheese course and wine. The waitress, when asked, had no idea what the house wine was and had to find out. The main course was ok, but the portions very small. The waitress forgot to bring the vegetable dishes we had ordered and when prompted only brought one (when we had nearly finished the main). The cheese course took ages to arrive and was both poorly presented and the biscuits stale. When we had paid our bill and we mentioned the poor service to the waitress she seemed to change and became very aggressive. She suggested that “if we paid with a voucher what could we expect” and that “we should have had a starter”. The implication was that we were given smaller portions because we had a voucher. The whole episode was very upsetting and we will not be returning.

We have been a couple of times now and are going again soon with other friends and both times have had a lovely evening. If you like a restaurant where the food is great, you can chat to the chef/manager first hand about what he particularly recommends on the day and where ingredients have come from etc, its perfect. Its not been busy when we've been there, which i just dont understand. The food is equally as good, if not better, than elsewhere in the village for a similar price and you are not jostled and hassled by waiters trying to get you to vacate your table as soon as possible. Yes, its cash only, so you have to remember that, but even if you dont, theres a cash point 15m away. Dont let that spoil your evening.

Last weekend,my wife,I and two friends (all of pensionable age) took advantage of a Daily Mail 2 for 1 voucher offer. We had a very pleasant meal, served by a friendly lady who it would seem was part of the management. All went well until we asked for the bill, which we were aware had to be cash. It was given to us by a gentleman who had been acting as chef, barman. We pointed out to him that a mistake had been made as we were being charged for 4 meals at full price and not as the voucher said should be 2 for 1. He would have none of it saying he was correct and had been charging that way since the offer began in February. We showed him a print out of their web page but still he insisted he was right. At this point the LADY appeared who had been all sweetness and lite literally screaming at us that she had had a feeling about us and we had come here to ROB her. That what we were doing was theft and she was calling the police, to which we we said we would be delighted if she would. She tried but somehow she cold not seem to get through! She had completely lost it at this stage and refused to listen to anything we had to say or look at the paper work we had but continued to be very abusive. We decided to pay the bill and leave but not before deducting the service charge to which the man said " You got served didn't you? It didn't serve itself !! We left. Needless to say the Daily Mail was informed about the incident and UPHELD. our complaint who kindly took it upon themselves to reimburse us.

Our Valentines Dinner spoilt at the end by being treated very badly by both Manager and his staff. At the time of booking I was told we could pay by cheque as no Credit Cards accepted. It also clearly states on website that cheques are acceptable with card. Whilst writing out cheque the lady came up to me and told me very abruptly that no cheques accepted in a very rude manner. I called the Manager/Chef to explain and again in a very abrasive manner refused to initially accept my cheque as he didn't know me!An argument prevailed and I told him a cheque or nothing and left a cheque.Needless to say despite ringing him the next day he offered no apology and told me the last two couples who left after us paid by cheque!!mOur night out was totally spoilt! This is no way to treat customers and we definitely won't be going back

As soon as we got home from visiting this place we got straight onto tripadvisor to see if anyone else had come across "the waitress" the Answer is yes !All I can say is that we agree with all if the comments about her terrible attitude, she more or less evicted a couple because they did not have cash despite being told when booking they could use a cheque, her response was " I can't take a cheque as I don't know you" when they walked she then had an argument with the chef about it. The toilet was in a bad place and we were frowned at when we did not want a dessert as we wanted to get out ASAP.Shame as the food is quite good but overpriced.

We had a super meal at Le Moulin - the atmosphere are night is lovely and the food is delicious. My husband has specific dietary requirements and the chef always advises whether something is Richasrd friendly or not...he always remembers what he dislikes. We have eaten there amny times before too with other friends and he caters for all diets imaginable - so long as you give him a litle notice. It is a small family run restaurant and that adds to the charm, I believe. The food is some of the tastyest food I've ever eaten, the freshly cooked pear tarte tatin with special vanilla ice cream (home-made, I believe) is to die for.

Although I try and review restaurants I have eaten in the last week or two it is about three months since I last visited here. We tend to come here three or four times a year. The food is fantastic – cooked from fresh ingredients that I believe are sourced daily. Last time I had sea bass and my partner went for lamb. Both were excellent. Although at first glance some people may think the mains expensive the price is inclusive of potatoes and seasonal vegetables – not an additional £5 - £6 like some places. For dessert we had a pear tart with vanilla ice cream – absolutely delicious! With the meal we had a bottle of Pinot Grigio – again excellent and like the food chosen with care. We will definitely fit in another visit before Christmas. There have been a number of comments about the waitress here. This puzzles us as we have always found her quite polite. The only time I have seen her starting to show annoyance was when a customer complained that he had not got what he had ordered. He had! The problem was that he had read only the first few words of the menu item. Ignore the negative comments and enjoy some of the best food available in Hertfordshire.Highly recommended!

Food was pleasant enough, but a bit overpriced, and more importantly (and consistent with the comments above) the service was poor. The woman who was acting as the sole member of front of house staff didn't seem to know what any of the dishes on the menu were, and just referred every question we asked back to the chef. She then completely forgot to bring the glass of wine I had asked for, and when I reminded her, she didn't even seem to remember that I had ordered it.The icing on the cake was when the bill came - she informed us that she'd included a voucher entitling us to 25% off our next visit. At this point I mentioned that we also had a voucher to use for tonight's visit, entitling us to £30 off the bill (the voucher had been purchased online by my wife). The woman seemed quite put out by this and loudly exclaimed "oh no - you should have mentioned this when you booked". I told her that I was fairly sure my wife *had* mentioned it when she booked (my wife was in the bathroom at this point, and was as such unable to contribute). The woman simply replied "Well she didn't". She then said "Well, if you're going to use a voucher then I'll have to take the bill away again, as we're going to charge you for the bread" (we had eaten one slice of complementary bread each while waiting for our starters - we had not ordered any extra bread). I got halfway through my next sentence when the woman just turned around and walked off with the voucher. At this point I was feeling fairly bemused - this all seemed quite unnecessary and over the top. When my wife returned, the woman came back to the table and proceeded to question my wife loudly about when she had booked the table, again stating categorically that she had not mentioned the voucher as 'her partner would have written it down'. She then brought out the chef (her partner) and again challenged my wife. The chef, however, quickly accepted that he may well have forgotten to write it down and did vaguely remember talking to my wife on the phone. The waitress' attitude then suddenly changed, and she said "Oh, well, in that case it's okay. He gets forgetful when he's left here on his own". I was now feeling pretty p-ed off, especially as she now seemed quite content that the situation had been resolved. To cap it all, when the bill reappeared (this time with two slices of bread added), the '25% off' voucher for our next visit was no longer present. This whole experience left a sour taste in our mouths and we won't be going back. A shame, because the chef makes nice food, and seemed like a nice guy - all for nothing thanks to the attitude of the front of house staff. I (generally) really like small independent restaurants, and would seek them out in preference to an establishment which was part of a chain, but rudeness is rudeness and there's no excuse for it. Character is great - poor service isn't.
