We have had 100s of meals out in France, love French food and were excited to try this place. Unfortunately it was a huge huge Disappointment. We both ordered 'Poulet frites grand mere' This is listed invitingly as roast chicken served with frites, mushroom gravy and salad. It came all plonked on a single plate yes, salad and Gravy on the same plate ! Salad as a result was inedible. The mushroom gravy tasted like it was made from a stock cube thickened with cornflour with a few sliced mushrooms floating around in it. It had no depth of flavour at all. The chicken and frites were nice - if they were served without the gravy (or with better, real gravy in a gravy boat) and the Salad on a side plate it would have gained far better approval. We may have forgiven the meal but for the terrible house wine. In a French restaurant you expect decent house wine - what was served to us was possibly the worst wine we have ever had - it may have been OK when it was opened but that was a long time before it was served to us. It was badly oxidised and we didn't touch a drop after the first sip

My beautiful girlfriend and I visited here for a meal for my birthday. The bar area was very busy, we were a bit early, but the owner of the restaurant said our table was ready. The restaurant area is separated from the bar by a heavy curtain which ensures a quieter eating experience. We asked the waitress for advice regarding a red wine as the Shiraz wasn't available, she offered us a perfect alternative. I had the venison which was cooked to perfection, my girlfriend had duck which she said was perfect too. Living in Buxton we have visited most of the restaurants here and I can honestly say this was the best meal I have had in Buxton. A big thank you to all the staff who were polite, attentive and made my birthday a special day but especially the chef who cooked us such a special meal as they are often the unsung heroes of restaurants.

We both had the Barnsley chop, it takes skill to get a piece of lamb that tough, couldn't get my knife through it, the rest of the meal was horrible too. Tried a couple of cocktails, but they were both a strange brown colour, as if they had a base mix or something. I was so surprised to see such good reviews, the people on the next table had issues too. Perhaps the usual chef was ill!

Sea bass was very bland with no sauce although it was supposed to have a white wine sauce. I politely complained. The owner disagreed with me and told me that it did have a sauce. Despite disagreeing he did go and get a sauce made. The food went cold whilst I waited. The owners response much more than the bland meal is the reason for the one star. He made me feel that it was me who was causing a problem and not the meal that lacked a sauce. The outside view from the restaurant of a green bin was also not great. The inside decor was not a problem to me although the owner decided it was! He stated that I didn’t like the decor or the tables. He is evidently a mind reader! This review is a resubmission. I feel the need to resubmit my review due to the unpleasant and untrue response from the owner. I felt he completely misunderstood the problem. I have deleted my previous review. I usually leave positive reviews. Such a shame! I won’t be returning here.

We decided to try this restaurant on one of our trips to Buxton, and visited midweek.Having missed out on several French holidays due to lockdown we were keen to try an authentic French style brasserie. We had a mixed evening. The staff seemed fairly friendly and competent at first but later the wait got a bit longer, and no one ever enquired if our meals were ok.Some restaurants in France are fiercely protective of their local wine, so I was pleased that their ‘sparkling wine’ was actually my favourite; Prosecco. Our starters of moules could almost have transported us to our normal French seaside destination. The bread portion was a little sparse, and I asked for more. I was a little surprised to later see a charge made for this, but it wasn’t a big deal.My main course was adequate but unremarkable, although the fries were insipid and not crispy. The boeuf bourguignon, however, was so disappointing. This is a standard dish in many French restaurants, and this was the very worst we have tried. I have never before seen the meat in this dish pale in colour, but that is what was served. It looked more like pork or chicken. We cut short our meal without staying to query this as although it was a hot day for staff to be rushing around, we noticed several of them were no longer following COVID guidelines and had masks either under their noses or even under their chins. Whilst one member of staff did seem to be complying, and was actually telling customers that they would be served only at their table , we saw one serve drinks at the counter to an unmasked customer ( actually his mask was in his hand). I realise that Covid precautions are testing, but we ate out evenings before and after this and everywhere else was compliant.

We hadn't booked and they found us a table outside. The drinks and main courses arrived in reasonable time. The food was good but then we seemed to get forgotten. Eventually someone came and asked if we wanted a dessert. Having waited so long we decided to choose quickly and order before they left us again. This we did but then we were also asked to pay before the desserts arrived. When they did a lemon roulade had turned into a lemon meringue tart with no explanation. We got the message and left after finishing our food.

Four of us dined here on a Friday night. We thought the starters were pleasant, if not a little basic, however the restaurant failed to keep this so called standard up for the main. The ‘Poulet Breton’, had by 3 of us, lacked finesse, flavour and the presentation was pretty poor. Served alongside boiled carrots and boiled broccoli was a dry chicken breast in a poor, bland cream sauce with whole prunes thrown on-top. We felt for almost £17, the main course was shameful. I feel awful writing this review during the current climate however this meal was not up to scratch for the price we paid. The atmosphere inside was good and the staff were some-what friendly however we feel incredibly disappointed with the meal having paid over £160. The profit margins for the food here must be extremely high as the standard of food received was awful in comparison to price. The deserts were pretty basic too. Two of our party ordered ‘gaulette’ (a French waffle with hot chocolate sauce). When this arrived it was basically a microwaved store bought waffle with squirty cream. We then asked for ice cream with this as it was bone dry. I would highly recommend this restaurant needs to up their standard of food. When spending over £160, you want the food to be as good or if not better, than what you could cook at home. In this instance, we should have stayed at home or spent the money elsewhere.

Quirky little place I've eaten at before and enjoyed. Notwithstanding the issue of Covid, the dining experience this time wasn't quite good enough. First the plus points. Exceptional and friendly service. The charcuterie, mussels, venison, and confit were very tasty. The Bordeaux red also went down nicely. There are significant issues, however, with presentation and the side dishes of veg. Although pleasant, the mash, roasted potatoes and veg, were poorly presented. Meanwhile the carrots were plain (only boiled) and the broccoli a little sparse. My confit duck, although flavoursome, came with no sauce so my meal consisted off duck and a great mound of mash and boiled carrots. Consequently, it was quite dry. The Beef bourguignon was just slopped onto the plate, along with the mash and a heap of carrots. It felt like good homecooked food, but not befitting of a brasserie or a French restaurant. My Maison cocktail was also practically undrinkable. Too strong, unmixed and with a mass of frozen fruit clumped at the bottom of the glass. I regret leaving a bad review and want the place to do well during this testing time, but feel it needs to up its game.

We ended up here after an aborted trip to a nearby pub, which we had left after we learnt that the food we had ordered 45 minutes earlier was no longer available (& that wasn’t the only issue - but that’s for another review)! This resulted in us arriving 10 minutes before the end of the lunch service. Despite the fact it was very busy, the waitress obviously sensed a degree of desperation in our search for food! She was extremely helpful in ensuring that we were still able to place our order, even though the kitchen was closing, and dealt well with the issues of food allergies too. The menu was distinctly French, and, although it claimed to be reduced in the post lockdown era, it had a good range of dishes available. I can particularly recommend the coq au vin, and the poulet frites grandmere looked good too. I’m certain we had a much nicer meal than we would have had at our first destination, and it was real food rather than the sort of fare many pubs in a chain can produce! I also enjoyed the touch of French-ness given by the Teisseire and other typical glassware! Would love to return.

We ordered the snails and frogs legs to start, the snails were over cooked and had no tast of garlic the legs were Luke warm and again lacking flavour. Mains we ordered two fish dishes one a salmon steak the other cod loin, before arriving the waitress asked who's having the steak and proceeded to place a steak knife down (see picture ) we both laughed then the mains came and soon stopped that, the mains were presented no better than somthing you would expect from Witherspoons, again there was no flavour to either meal. I don't like writing bad reviews normally but this isn't a cheap restraunt the bill for food and a bottle of house wine was just over £80. We enjoyed eating here in the past but we will give it a miss till they start to up there game as they were before and not sit on there laurels.

We both ordered the garlic mushroom starter, which was fine, other than the bread that came with them which had obviously just been defrosted and was still cold in the middle. For our main courses I chose the fish, which was okay. My husband ordered the Barnsley chop, which was cold when he cut into it. When we complained we were told they always serve lamb pink, which is how we do it at home, but there’s a difference between pink and cold. We ordered a bottle of house red, which wasn’t the best. Picked them out with cocktail sticks which did the trick. Poured the garlic sauce over the bread. For the main course I had pork medallions in a sauce which was equally as nice.We had a couple of bottles of red wine to go with it, which at about £20 a bottle was not unreasonable. In true French fashion we ordered brandies at the end of the meal to accompany our coffee. Unfortunately the restaurant was only able to find two balloon glasses so the rest of us had them served in utility glasses. A small point, I know, but never mind. When asked if we wanted anything else with our starters we asked for some bread. Really surprised to see it appear on the bill. In France you always get some bread! Otherwise OK but not exceptional.

A party of 10 (8 adults and 2children) ate here for lunch to celebrate our daughter‘a birthday on 1 November. We could not have chosen a better location, menu had something to suit everyone, the atmosphere was just right. Owner totally unfazed by a 2 year old and a five year old wanting to explore the restaurant. The food and wine were excellent and authentic, totally clean plates from all the adults, children not so but realistically this was due to portion size not quality. 2 year old Grandson loved his boeuf bourguignon and even enjoyed some of my snails. One of the party was unhappy with his steak, this was replaced with no quibble and the replacement was perfect. The party without exception all agreed to return both individually and collectively, which is testament to the owner, chef and staff. Daughter said it was her best birthday ever, till her big one next year!

We recognised from the menu that this restaurant was the same model as the Café Rouge chain so ate on a Sunday evening. The staff were friendly and helpful, and keen to explain the menu.Pleasant decor, including a gallimaufry of French memorabilia on the walls. The boudin noir (listed on the menu as boudain noire) was good, and the steak was well presented. All in for four with drinks was £105, which came in at what I had estimated. Pleasant atmosphere.

My husband and I have just enjoyed a first-rate meal of classic French food from an extensive menu, with excellent, well-priced wine to accompany our food. The service was both efficient and friendly, with personal attention from monsieur le patron. A very lucky find! À bientôt, j'espère!

It was such a surprise to find a proper French restaurant in Buxton. We enjoyed savoury tarte tatin (with brie and caramelised onion) and very filling tartiflette.

We chose this restaurant for a meal on a two day reunion event in Buxton. We pre-ordered in advance from the £25 per head group menu. They also do £15 and £20 menus. The event could not have gone better, we were welcomed warmly and the food was delicious and served efficiently by the proprietor and his staff. A lovely atmosphere which everyone in our group thoroughly enjoyed.

Menu is full of great French dishes - really difficult to choose. We had excellent starters and mains - too full for dessert. Lovely bottle of wine to go with it. Despite there being a large party in the service was exemplary. Highly recommended

So very disappointing. Great location but that was it. The specials were ordinary. The wine did not help and the main courses we had would not be served in any bistro of France. Sorry... but this is just not good enough.

It’s been a good while since I had been to a french restaurant so we booked this instead of the usual bar meals, etc. The food was lovely, apparently the frogs legs were good but I didn’t try them. I had poulet Breton and hubby had steak which was massive and cooked how he wanted it. Our friends enjoyed their meals but were told that the veg would be carrots, broccoli and beans and they only got beans but they had run out of a few things so they probably had run out of this. The atmosphere is good but as a reviewer previously had said, some were really loud. The only downside of this restaurant is that the ceilings are low so they can’t have air conditioning and it was so hot, even with all doors open. I would recommend anyone to try this restaurant.

When booking we stated that we were visiting for an anniversary meal and would like a well placed table. Upon arrival it was clear that the best tables were taken but we were invited to choose from the remainder. No other special treatment was proffered. We both thoroughly enjoyed our starters and desert but the main courses (pork and venison) were slightly disappointing.

The cooking here is as good as anything on offer in Buxton - a pretty good rendition of a host of French classics with fair prices (mains between £14 and £17). I had the Bavette (French cut steak) which, while not being a particularly generous serving, was flavoursome and richly sauced. The wine selection is good, with a few reasonable quality options at a fair price. Service is good, and there is a very relaxed feel about the place.

Superb meal here en famille. Between the six of us we sampled steak, poulet breton, parmentier, agneau and the salmon. Everyone was delighted with the meal. We were enjoying the food so much that we each had a dessert and they were equally delicious. The food here is of high quality and the service is polite and unobtrusive. Highly recommend.

We stayed in Buxton for two nights this week and ate in this delightful restaurant on both evenings even though there were several other places to eat in town. The staff were very pleasant, welcoming and helpful both during booking and during the meals. The restaurant and bar area were quite busy even though it was mid-week and the restaurant had a lovely ambience. The menu and the drinks were authentically French and I enjoyed a kir royale apéritif each evening which contained just the right quantity of crème de cassis. The excellent choices for both starters and mains, on both the main menu and daily specials, made it very difficult for us to choose. Everything we ate on each evening was delicious - charcuterie, asparagus au gratin, French onion soup, coq au vin, lamb shank, boeuf bourguignon. Portions were generous and accompanying vegetables were good. To drink with our meals we chose the house red Merlot which was reasonably priced and very palatable. I wish this restaurant was closer to where we live!

We were the only table in the restaurant on the evening we visited but were assured that this is not usual. The food was good. The portions were very generous and the price average to type. I would recommend the Red Onion and Brie Tarte Tatin. The service was excellent considering we were the only customers they didn’t rush us and allowed plenty of time between courses.

Fancy authentic French food in an informal setting - then look no further. Right in the centre of Buxton close to the Opera House, Crescent, Pump Room, Devonshire Dome etc. A pleasant brasserie style restaurant, not too formal, but not too lively either, with a bar next door.

The restaurant is not fine dining or pretending to be anything it is not.If you are looking for traditional French food that would have made unadventurous Brits squirm in bygone years, this is the place for you! Snails ,frogs leg,.garlic and onion soup and a delightful owner creating a slightly eccentric Allo' Allo' experience. The old moped outside was a good conversation piece,A little bit of Edith Piaf or Maurice Chevallier would have topped this retro evening off though.

We visited for lunch on a typically cold Buxton June day. We were impressed with the authentic French offerings (yes, it is horse on the specials board we were assured), and the food was good - our party had a wide selection from the menu (not horse) and each of us was happy with our choice - the boeuf bourguignon had particularly high ratings. Service was attentive and helpful. However, we think that more thought should have been paid to the comfort of the diners - the place was decidedly chilly so it didn't feel very welcoming; and every time the door opened there was a blast of that cold Buxton air. It is this that drags down the rating, I'm afraid.

We decided to try here as the kids had always wanted to try Frogs legs, we booked a table for 4 which they just managed to squeeze us in. We sat down and my son asked if anybody here was actually French as he is learning it at school, the French man then replied to him in French and he was so excited. We had a selection of real French starters snails, frogs legs and smoked eels, me and my wife loved them and the kids tried them and liked most of them, they even gave them a empty snail shell as a souvenir. We enjoyed all our food and the service was great aswell.

We visited on a Monday evening. We ordered a house red, and the only choice was a Malbec, which was rough and acidic, unexpected in a French restaurant. The starter of 6 snails was similarly disappointing because the garlic butter was watery and lifeless. The main course of Poulet Frites Grandmere was mixed - the meat and the mushroom gravy were good but the chips tasted and smelt of over-used oil. There was also a salad on the plate - I’d normally expect a vegetable or two with gravy, not a salad. Service was pleasant and attentive. Overall, a disappointing visit and we’d be reluctant to go back - looking at the other reviews, perhaps we were just unlucky.
