French place with nice ambience, service and food of course. We got the fish. We liked our meals. Desert was an apple tart something like soft flap jack with apple and rubarb.

More details and family-friendly reviews on my blog 'The Frenchie Mummy' and on Instagram @thefrenchiemummy. So Google it and have a look there too. Merci! We stopped by last week as we were in the New Forest and we had a lovely dinner. The service was impeccable and the food really nice. Plus, we also liked the place with all the vintage French touches, go and check out the 2CV!

Our heart sank from the moment we walked in the door and saw the "Allo Allo" truly naff decor and some tables still set with Christmas crackers on the 13th January. We have lived and worked and eat in Paris and Brussels for 14 years so we know what is good and bad about French food and were hopeful that the menu might provide food of a typical Brasserie style. It was not to be. We were seated in the front conservatory and it was cold - my wife had to put her coat on as did another lady. The welcome and service was pleasant enough - but we were provided with unasked advice which was a bit pushy - on the wine - and recommending having a side which was totally unnecessary. I had "Soupe de Homard" - which was weak - you would be better with a tin of Baxters. The rouille was bland and tasteless. My wife had the soup of the day, Leek and Potato which she did not enjoy - but it was still better than mine. These were accompanied by a small mass-produced "baguette" which would NEVER have been served in France. On the main courses, I went for the Confit duck which was dry and way overcooked. Similar issues applied to my wife's seabream. Overall there was nothing in this meal to enjoy and we spent over £100.

I loved the restaurant and the vibes the moment I walked in… Sorry literally did a photo video dump of what I had and experience whilst at the Spa retreat as a small bday treat to myself. Such a beautiful restaurant and lovely staff. If you come in via the hotel entrance it was the most wonderful immersion before the wonderfully delicious food! The Emmental Choix Buns were recommended when I gave them the few amuse bouche that I wanted to try. They were delicious! (If you like and can eat cheese). I then went for the lobster soup which was very flavoursome. Wasn’t sure what I was meant to do with the mayo but as you can see from the photos… I did my usual thing of experimenting… I trusted the mix of flavours presented to me and put them together. I’m a believer that when there’s all sorts on a plate, you should try eating all flavours together to taste or for that course. I was pretty much set on main until I got to the restaurant but I decided to go for (Marle?) their fish option which was perfectly cooked. To finish, I had a yummy liquid dessert which was similar to a Sauternes but even better as it was slightly less sweet. If you stay at Carey’s I highly recommend visiting this restaurant, their spa and other restaurants. The staff throughout the hotel were also lovely and friendly from reception to the lovely staff who prepped our room and the bar staff (even when tenet were busy).

I took a friend to Le Blaireau for lunch today to celebrate her birthday. I have been visiting this wonderful French restaurant in the heart of the New Forest for almost 40 years, since the first week it opened inthe 80s, and during all that time I have never had a bad meal or poor service there. I suspect that few restaurants can boast this. Today I had 'steak au frites' with a side salad with a glass of champagne, and I could have been eating in a cafe on the Champs Elysee. It was delicious, and very French. Their lunch time opening schedule is a bit difficult - they are usually open Mondays, Fridays and Saturdays (not sure about Sunday), but its worth trying to get a reservation - I booked on line. I wholeheartedy recommend it. For good food, and a superb French ambiance it can't be beaten.

We had a pre dinner drink whilst looking at the menu and have to say it definitely was very French both in description and style! My wife went with ‘soufflé au bleu’ (a cheese soufflé) which she quite enjoyed but did say it could have been a bit more cheesy! For me, it was escargots in a garlic butter which, as always, I find to be fine. For the main, we both went with the duck confit which was served with sautéed potatoes in a red wine sauce with a dish of tender stem broccoli served as a side dish. We both enjoyed it but have to say the duck was a bit on the salty side. A decent bottle of a Corbiere blended red helped things along nicely. So, overall, our impression was positive albeit not overtly so.

Had dinner in Le Blaireau while staying in Carey's Manor hotel. The restaurant wasn't busy but everyone seemed to be squeezed in the front conservatory area, I suppose to watch the setting sun but it did feel cramped. We had some garlic bread which was just so-so. The sea bass was excellent although the extra vegetables were overcooked and drowned in butter. The star of the meal was the chocolate fondant, the biggest most delicious one I have had and I have sampled a lot! The gentlemen serving were attentive but there was a problem getting the bill correct. It took three attempts before it was just our food and drink on it. The food is quite expensive for what it is but we would probably eat there again for convenience if staying in the hotel.

Whoever outfitted the restaurant did a good research job and it has a genuine brasserie atmosphere and ambience. The menu is limited but fine. They supplied a basket of bread without being asked which I loved. My main of the classic Boeuf Bourgignon was great. Snails to start. Crème Brûlée to finish. The main irritation was that French brasseries vary between being very reasonably priced to being quite expensive. But here it’s all bloody expensive. If you are aiming for the high-end market why create a brasserie? And this hotel doesn’t get wine, with both a poor selection and ridiculously overpriced. But I enjoyed myself very much here and the staff were very pleasant . If they can get away with the prices they ask for at each of their 3 hotel restaurants here good luck, I suppose, but for me they are being a bit greedy.

Absolutely terrible. We just went there and the atmosphere seemed fine and the front of house staff were friendly enough. However when it came to the food, the whole experience was completely ruined by the beef bourguignon, it was the worse cut of meat I have ever even seen let alone consume, it was 20% fat (which is fine), 75% gristle with perhaps 5%of very low quality meat. I honestly don’t think it was suited for eating let alone for the price we paid. We were so disappointed because the reviews seemed good, and we’d gone there as a birthday treat. We are not the type of people who usually complain or don’t leave a generous tip, but in this instance I had to ask the service charge to be removed and out of good nature didn’t want to cause a scene so paid in full. I would not recommend this place to anyone and certainly will never go back. It has left me feeling quite unwell and left a bit of a sour taste on what had been a very pleasant trip before that point.

We’re staying at Carey’s manor for a few nights. Last night we eat at Zen which was fabulous. Tonight we tried le Blaireau. I do not like to give poor reviews, however, unfortunately it was disappointing. It is advertised as a French restaurant; the decor is vaguely French, the menu is not. We had 2 starters, a baked Camembert which was cold and firm in the middle, and leek and potato soup that was bland, thin and appeared boiled to death in a microwave. The main course menu included sirloin steak, burger, battered fish.....nothing French there. The steaks were not so tender, my wife’s medium rare was over cooked. We took a crime brûlée back to our room and that was very good. All in all...disappointed.

It has been a long time since I last visited Le Blaireau because I live 100 miles away but it was just as good when I had lunch there today as it had been before. I love this restaurant for its friendliness, efficiency and exceptional food. We benefited from the government's current "Eat Out to Help Out" scheme: there is a fixed price "Menu Blaireau" normally £20 a head but this was now £10. I had warm goat's cheese on bruchetta with mixed leaves salad; pan-fried fillet of sea bass with tomato, pepper and olive, and potatoes; and creme brulee. It was all absolutely delicious and exquisitely presented. I felt completely at ease with all the Covid safety measures in place. The tables were well spaced, all the staff were wearing masks and our temperatures were taken when we arrived. The staff are very friendly and welcoming. The dated decor is great. There is a 2CV car running into a wall, a French street with a boulangerie, panoramic pictures of Paris and a picture of the French poet Jacques Prevert. I hope it won't be so long until my next visit.

My Mum and I ate here last night and were pleasantly surprised - especially having read some of the reviews on here...On Monday-wednesday they do a three course set menu for £20 which we went for as we were happy with the selection. This was a good price, and then ended up very cheap when we got the £10 reduction from eat out to help out!!Food was tasty, very hot and well presented. I think the quality reflects the price. The service was excellent, friendly and efficient staff. I'd recommend the creme brulee in particular! The building itself might be a little dated decor wise but we found it to be quite a cute cosy Parisian style cafe with a good atmosphere (admittedly it was quite busy). I think if you're expecting this to be a 5* Michelin restaurant you'll be disappointed but if you have realistic expectations for what it actually is, then it's pretty good. Very convenient if you're staying in the hotel too!

I think this was an example of making the wrong menu choice. We had booked Le Blaireau because we were staying in the hotel with my son and his girlfriend. The restaurant has the appearance of a French bistro and we started well with a shared Russian salad and plate of charcuterie, both plates were fine. We then moved onto the main course, all my family were very happy with their choices, I was not. I had chosen the baked cauliflower with harissa ketchup and pomegranate. Maybe having something vegetarian in a French restaurant was the mistake, but the dish was one of the worst things I have eaten in a restaurant for many years. The cauliflower was completely mushy, I cannot imagine that it was baked, I suspect it was boiled within an inch of its life then covered in a cloying sauce with barely a hint of harissa but an overpowering taste of bottled ketchup, the 3-4 pomegranate seeds were sad refugees struggling to make their flavour rise above the wave of processed tomato. I can only conclude that a moment of madness made me chose the dish, I do not know what I was thinking. I mentioned to the waitress that the dish was unsatisfactory and she just acknowledged my statement and nothing more was done. I suspect I just made the wrong choice as the rest of our party were happy with their selections.

We’d spent a week in the New Forest and thought we’d save what we expected to be the best until last. How wrong can you be? A poor menu in choice, even taking into account the pandemic. Slow service too. If you fancy a decent night out for food, I’d swerve this place and choose many other options locally first.

We went here for lunch having been recommended and had high hopes. The restaurant is like a french bistro, but a run down one. The furnishings were tired with many of the double glazing panes having broken down, misted up spoiling the view which with flimsy drab curtains creating a tired feel. Not shabby chic. The food was average but the prices were not. I have had some great vegetarian starters but mine was a so what dish. I sent the chicken back as it was undercooked with blood still in it - I have had salmonella once and did not want it again. Cheese was the best part. The terrace outside was better but even then why do they have to have large Kellogg’s cardboard boxes in front of the windows again giving a could not care less feel.Really was surprised and disappointed given the hotels rating.Would rather have gone to my local pub.

This was my first meal out since lockdown. The food and wine were great, and the outdoor seating area was lovely. The random decor inside was so weird, it was quite comical. There were wooden cut outs of Victorian people interspersed throughout the restaurant. It did not add anything to the ambiance and I have no idea what they were thinking putting them there. The waitress who took us to our table chastised me quite rudely for taking my face mask off before I had sat down at the table (I took it off as I went outside, thinking that was okay). Given that it was my first meal out since lockdown, I don’t know what the rules are and am happy to learn - but the waitress was quite rude about it. Not the best start to the evening! Thankfully, we had a different server for every interaction we had throughout the evening and the rest of the staff were friendly and nice - especially the man (the manager, I think). We had a lovely evening and the food and drink would make me come back again. Just prepare yourself for the decor!

We stayed at Careys and elected to eat here as it was very warm and there were tables outside. We had 2 lovely tables under the vines and each night we had amazing service from Richard and his colleagues. Think he was taken aback by the school French phrases we came out with, the next night we had a lovely monkey picture by our tables. The food for each days dinner was good, very filling and nicely presented, the salmon special was really delicious and so tender. When we are back at Careys we will definitely be eating here again.

The Café Rouge of Brockenhurst, average at best. Try the other places at Carey's Manor instead, or The Huntsman down the road

This was our 2nd visit, the first time I rated it 5* but this time it felt like the standard of the food had really slipped. The crab starter was mainly lettuce and avocado, with hardly any crab! The tarte tatin (which was exceptional last time) was burnt around the edges. However, the lamb was very good. The restaurant is rather expensive (£100 for two people, with no alcohol) and the food was unfortunately disappointing on this occasion.

Le Blaireau Bistro is attached to the Carey’s Manor Hotel. We had dinner there while staying at the hotel on a spa break. Good friendly, efficient service, nice decoration and the food was delicious too.

We were meant to be Popping in to Carey's Manor today for coffee and a light bite but ended up having lunch in Le Blaireau after strolling through the wrong door and seeing the irresistible menu. The mains were so delicious we decided to have dessert too. The catch of the day was tasty with plenty of vegetables. I cannot fault the service and welcoming atmosphere. Staff are just wonderful. Will definitely visit again when in the new forest or Brockenhurst area again. Worth every penny. Thank you!

We dined as part of the SenSpa evening indulgence package. The set menu still had a great selection, we had the goat cheese bruschetta and scallops for starter, duck confit for main and creme brûlée for dessert. We both had a large glass of house wine included, when I asked for red we had a choice or Malbec, Merlot, Pinot noir etc which was great! The staff were very friendly and attentive. We would definitely return!! Overall the food was delicious, quality ingredients, good portion sizes, excellent flavours and hot plates which is a big plus nowadays! The only negative comment I have to make is the decor, the cut outs of life size diners is odd and just not needed.

We were staying at the hotel and ate here for my birthday. Very authentic french vibe, lovely menu. I had lobster bisque which was very filling and a beef Bourguignon which I loved. So tasty and tender. Herby mash was divine. Husband had confit duck and a starter with scallops in delicate puff pastry with a pink peppercorn sauce. We had a light gamay wine, lovely. It was busy so if you come, do book ahead. The ambience is very french...wall tiles staff, uniform etc, but oddly they have huge painted life sized wood cutouts of french people in Victorian. Costume placed near some tables, most peculiar . I would simply ditch them and the place would look totally different! Otherwise a lovely dinner.

Whilst staying at Carey's Manor, we booked a table at this on-site restaurant. The decor was quirky but not particularly welcoming. Our main courses were really good and this saved a rating of terrible. We ordered desserts and I chose the warm rum baba and when I took the first bite it was cold!!! I brought this to the attention of one of the staff who said it would be replaced. A plate was then served, which I was advised had been freshly prepared, but it was the original dish which had been microwaved!!! Disgraceful! I refused to eat it and was offered an alternative. I chose the tarte tatin and the only edible part of it was the ice cream. I once again brought this to the attention of the staff and was advised that I would not be charged for my dessert. We expected the desserts to be freshly prepared but they obviously were not and for such a high class establishment we found this totally unacceptable.Regarding the service, we were never sure who we would see next as they seemed to take it in turn to serve tables. At no time during the main meal were we asked if everything was okay.We would definitely not return to this restaurant.
