If you’re in Thurso, make sure you visit Bydand because the food quality and service is excellent. We spent a fantastic two weeks touring around Scotland last summer, visiting many lovely restaurants along the way, but this was our favourite. Thank you for a lovely experience.

Fantastic meal yet again. This is definitely our fav restaurant in Thurso. Pork belly and seabass our favs but tbh, everything is excellent.

This was my second visit to Bydand which was the must visit restaurant from last years trip. It did not disappoint. This restaurant serves high class food at very reasonable cost. I cannot immediately place anywhere else that provides such quality and flavour. The awards this restaurant has gained were richly deserved. From the complimentary amuse buoche to the last morsel the food was top class. Favourably comparable to the best michelin starred meals I have enjoyed across the world.

Excellent: 1st-class ingredients; 1st-class preparation; 1st-class presentation; 1st-class service.

When I find myself travelling solo, I like to visit places which I would want to return to with my family. Bydand certainly ticks that box. The atmosphere is tranquil, the staff quietly professional, and the food is attractively presented and delicious. It is also locally sourced which is a significant benefit. My only dilemma is that it’s an 1100 mile round trip so an impromptu dinner with the wife might need an element of planning. Brian and your crew - thank you for a splendid evening.

Sehr netter Service, klein aber fein! Feine frische Küche! Der Pork Belly sowie das geschmorte Rindfleisch war extraklasse! Das Schoko Toffee auch super! Nur der Risotto war genügend, ich bin auch der Meinung ein Risotto muss immer ein bisschen fliessen und darf nicht in einer gestürzten Form serviert werden! Ansonsten sehr gut!

Really good I loved it and would absolutely come back here if I'm in thurso. The staff is great and the food so fresh, tasty and you can taste the chef put his hearty in it. Also good price for what you have.

Bydand Restaurant lived up to the great reviews. Our party of four were given a lovely table and treated to exemplary service and food. The menu has good variety and we were all spoiled for choice. Every course was beautifully presented, of high quality, and perfectly cooked. The pace of the meal was well judged and the service very attentive, but friendly and welcoming. It is a family run restaurant, using local ingredients and the care, attention and pride is obvious. Well deserving of it's recent national award. Thank you.

The Bydand was one of the best restaurant experiences during our trip to the Scottish Highlands. The meal was excellent, the atmosphere lovely and the host delightfully friendly! We would highly recommend.

We had a lovely dinner. Food was delicious! Service was perfect. Would come back for sure. Highly recommend the honey & lady grey creme brûlée!

A delightful little restaurant, with calming decor and pleasant staff. My husband and I both had the carrot and coriander soup, served with a delicious corn bread. We were then served a palate cleanser which was an elderflower sorbet (sort of like having your dessert before your dinner). For our main course, my husband had the cajun chicken pasta (which he said was delicious) and I had the griilled portobello mushrooms which were phenomenal. I would love to say that we are going back, but we live much too far away. I would recommend it highly to amyone in the area.. you won't regret it! Bonus was the all-inclusive cost of 34GBP per person for the starter, intermediate, and main courses.

Amazing meal and service. 4 of us went for a meal. We all had 3 courses and loved the little taster touches .

What a delightful and refreshing experience. We had been driving all day and staying outside of Thurso and just wanted a nice meal. We were not disappointed. The whole experience was well done, from booking on line to the breadth of the menu. It’s an unimposing looking little hole in the wall but packed with a sophisticated range of goody treats. It was reasonably priced and we got wonderful service.

When you are in Thurso go here for diner. A small family run restaurant that produces good quality meals. And for a very reasonable price! We were absolutely pleasantly surprised.

We really enjoyed our dinner at Bydand. Great choice on the menu and nice touches of aperitifs and palate cleansers. Good location in Thurso. Staff were friendly and well trained.

The food was first class with great flavour combinations in all the dishes we tried. The haggis bon bons and scallop starters were beautifully presented. The shredded beef and ballotine chicken mains were equally impressive without being pretentious. Good portions meant we were full but with all the flavour sensations we wanted to sample a dessert sharing a chocolate delice. Lovely evening, with fantastic food all locally sourced and made from scratch! Friendly, husband/wife run restaurant. No alcohol allowed when we visited due to current restrictions, but didn't detract from the whole experience! Highly recommend 👌

We had an excellent meal here, the lady looking after us was friendly and efficient. It was a bit cold, a bit more heat would have good also playing some music as it did feel a bit deserted (probably due to social distancing) but the food and wine was brilliant. The portion size was a bit inconsistent but it didnt take away from a very good meal. The cheesecake desert was fabulous.

I can't tell you how delighted I was to dine here with my husband a month ago. We travelled the North Coast 500 for his birthday and were in Thurso for two nights. On one of the nights we had dinner in Bydand. The waitress was friendly and helpful and the chef and owner was SUCH A LOVELY MAN! I have a gluten and dairy intolerance and he made me feel very well looked after and cared for. He also gave my husband and I really helpful sight seeing advice. The food was beautifully presented, really delicious and excellent value. I would happily go back the next time we are in Thurso. Highly highly recommend!

If you are intending to dine in Thurso, this is the place. It is a charming, small restaurant in the centre of town. The food is freshly prepared from local ingredients, delicious and well presented. We spoke to the chef and owner after our meal and his passion for his craft was obvious. His philosophy is, cook with the best, fresh locally source produce. My personal favourites were the Scallop starter and Shredded Beef main. Cost for 3 courses with wine was £40 per head. Excellent value.

My husband and I had a lovely meal while doing the north coast 500. The staff are extremely friendly and efficient, we felt very well looked after and all the covid precautions are in place and work well. An added bonus was the fire which kept us lovely and cosy! For the food we went for the smoked salmon and the haggis bon bons to start - good portion size and tasty. For mains we had the salmon and the chicken ballotine - very generous portions but we still managed to finish it all. We even managed deserts - sticky toffee pudding and chocolate hazelnut delice. Again very tasty and finally we were defeated. All in all a really nice meal with very attentive service. I would recommend eating here while passing through Thurso.

Very covid aware, limited choice, but only to be expected at this time. Starter and main for £25. Was disappointed that we couldn't choose between having a starter or dessert. The waitress said she had asked for someone else and the answer was no.We enjoyed the scallops and carrot soup starters, but mains were a bit underwhelming. My beef was delicious, but there was not enough jus. My husband did not enjoy his ballotine of chicken. The plate was dominated by an enormous wedge of savoy cabbage. This neither looked or tasted great and my husband ended up leaving more than half of it.

Absolutely sensational meal. Great small family run place We had the Haggis and Scallops starters and salmon and beef mains...just pure culinary indulgence and enjoyment. Friendly staff and all the food clearly cooked from scratch and sustainable sources. Highly recommended.

Service was excellent but from there it was downhill. £25 for 2 courses, a starter and a main. My wife and I had the ‘hand dived’ scallop starter which was £3 extra. For this we got two scallops. Yes 2 . Are they really being serious I bet they don’t catch people twice with that option. My main course of shredded beef was dry with virtually no red wine jus, and this was accompanied by potato that was a mix of mashed and partly mashed potato which with the lack of a decent quantity of jus was unpleasant to eat. My wife’s salmon dish left her still quite hungry especially after feasting and ‘filling up’ on the 2 scallops for the starter. House wine by the glass was also a very poor quality. The nicest part of the meal was the chocolate dessert. It might look nice on a plate but there is a lot of work to be done to make this a restaurant you would recommend to someone on quality, price and somewhere you would want to go back to.

Comunque piatti ricercati in stile italo-francese. Impiattamento ricercato, abbinamenti perfetti, gusto originale. Tutti perfetto. Complimenti per il locale, lo stile e l'attenzione e la cura ai piatti, introvabili in Scozia.

Attentive staff and food was beautifully presented. In the salmon and cous cous starter, the cous cous was dry and flavourless. It had a lovely sauce decorating the plate but there wasn't enough of it to counteract the dryness of the cous cous. The scallops starter was lovely, but there was only 2 of them. These had an additional supplement charge but for 2 scallops, it wasn't really worth it. The salmon main dish was lovely but I felt that it didn't really go together. The fillet of salmon was large which was great. The chickpea dahl, shallot and orange carrots were nice but didn't complement each other. The chicken ballotine was really juicy and flavourful. The sticky toffee puddings were average. They didn't feel like they were homemade. The ice cream accompanying them was fantastic though!Average food with good service.

The food was cooked perfectly however I didn't think it all went together. The chickpeas and orange carrots with the salmon were all fantastic just not it the same dish. The same with the starter smoked salmon with couscous. I can't say enough how well all was cooked and how amazing the staff are but thats my one fault.

Great venue , COVID friendly , attentive service and delicious food. So glad we booked a table was fabulous. Great little family business still operating through these tough times so glad to support them whilst enjoying delicious food.

What a wonderful evening we had.....From a covid point of view - They had covered every angle and we felt 100% safe without it being over the top.The warm and freindly greeting yoy get when you arrive you know instantly your in for a nice evening.Menu was excellent... again due to the pandemic the staff explained why they had a limited menu... However it may be limited but for me each of the 5 choices of Starters, Mains or Puddings ticked all the boxes... defo somthing for everyone.The service was quick freindly and very relaxed... The staff took time to speak to their customers and find out about why we were there... it was all so natural.The food arrives... OMG fantastic. Nice portion, well presented and tasted wonderful.I really could not fault this place and if you are in the area you must go.....

Food was excellent, portions slightly on the small side if you’re a bigger eater. Wasn’t too keen on the sides that came with the salmon, but the salmon itself was cooked perfectly.Not much of an atmosphere as no music playing. Lots of COVID precautions in place which was good. Staff were friendly and food came out very fast.

Although a limited menu due to COVID, there was a good range to choose from, the food was very enjoyable. The owners have done a great job to make everyone feel safe whilst not taking way the character of the venue. Highly recommend the place!!

A family run business, Brian, the Chef is inspirational offering a balanced set menu with a limited number of choices for each course - means food is fresh and changes frequently. Whilst self taught he has worked with Michelin chefs, travelled world wide and from our experience produces first class food at prices that are of exceptionally good value.The creme brûlée was amazing. His wife runs front of house and runs a tight ship, she was lovely. If visiting Thurso don’t miss this delightful restaurant.

Staying in Thurso on our trip of the NC500, booked a table here to treat ourselves to a nice meal out and thats just what we got.The presentation of the meals was well thought through and the service was very friendly.The food itself was lovely but the only thing that would have to be said negatively, is that the cajun chicken pasta with creamy white wine and parmesan sauce didnt have as much flavour as it should have plus the pasta was very starchy making it feel gloopy Not worth the £25 unfortunately.But that really is the only thing I could say because everything else was truly lovely.

We reserved a table through the websites reservation service and thank goodness we did. Make sure you book to get a table. Service was impeccable and the layout is so clever. It is a small place but they really make the most of every inch to provide a smooth and effective service. It is relaxed but the Covid measures are impeccable. They obviously work very hard to make it relaxed and safe place for diners. The food was absolutely delicious. We are tourists moving through the area but reserved the table in anticipation of being in Thurso that evening. Simply for a change from eating in the various hotel restaurants we chose to book a restaurant and this was the no 1 restaurant in thurso. The online menu looked delicious and a good price so we booked up. We were delighted. We have eaten some lovely food on our travels but this was a fantastic meal. We were lucky to speak to the chef after dinner who gave me some top tips on cooking scallops - which I had had for my starter and which were amazing! Overall great service, great price, amazing food.

This is a small family run restaurant. They serve thoughtful locally based food and linked wine and beer. We had a lovely meal there and they worked so hard to make everyone covid secure and serve fantastic food.

We started with Haggis Bon Bons (nice presentation, tasty) and Carrott and Coriander soup.. all goodThen for main Baillotine of Chicken and slow cooked shredded beef. Both dishes were well presented and well judged We passed on desert!This is a really hard working family run restaurant. Friendly service great food and good value. Recommended!

What a great wee Scottish Family run Restaurant!! From the outstanding customer service to the delicious food, the Bydand is a must in Thurso! So glad and pleased to have stumbled across this place. We had the set 2 courses for £25, Orkney Hand Dived Scallops and Haggis Bon Bon for starters, Scottish Seared Salmon and Slow Braised Shredded Beef for mains and decided to go for a sharer dessert - Orkney Cheesecake. Only thing I’m disappointed in is not having enough space in my stomach to try everything on the menu.

We dined in this wonderful restaurant on our last night in Scotland. Think we definitely saved the best until last! From starters to dessert the food was a feast for the eyes & for your taste buds. Everything was cooked to perfection & tasted amazing. The staff were friendly & welcoming. I can’t rate this establishment high enough. We’ve eaten in a lot of restaurants & feel the Bydand should most definitely receive a Michelin star.

Booked into the restaurant for an evening meal and received immediate confirmation and a later reminder. The decor was simple but elegant. Service was prompt and friendly. Food was excellent in appearance and taste! Definitely recommend eating here!

One of the few restaurants in Thurso we could get into during these strange times, but I’m glad we chose this place regardless.Orkney scallops were nice, as were the haggis bon-bons. The salmon was excellent, a really good dish. The food in general was relatively faultless.Ideally they’d have a better beer selection, including a draught option. The service also wasn’t bad but it wasn’t amazing, so can’t quite stretch to 5*. Finally, we noticed odd tables being asked if they’d recently been to Aberdeen (due to the local lockdown), thankfully we hadn’t but we were never asked, so there potentially were people who had been exposed but hadn’t been asked.

We were doing NC500 and stayed in Thurso town for one night,. It was about 5.30 when we arrived to find all shops etc. closed, streets deserted and not many people about at all. We came across Bydand. Read the menu on display outside and decided it looked good. Went in to see if they could take us, and were absolutely delighted to be told yes, they could. The restaurant is very modern, smart, comfortable, and immaculately clean. We were shown to our table and asked to give info for track and trace purposes. All the advice on social distancing, wearing of mask when leaving your table, use of sanitizer and so on, were carried out to the letter. We felt very safe and comfortable. We consulted the menu and ordered. Starters were smoked salmon with couscous and scallops. Mains were spicy chicken pasta and a pulled beef. Does not sound very exciting, but believe me, all the food was to die for. All the dishes were beautifully and artistically presented. The quality of the products used, was excellent. The food was well cooked and the flavours and portion sizes were absolutely perfect. We had a bottle of Italian red wine, think it was called Seascape. It was delicious. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience of eating in the Bydand. So much so, that we decided to stay on and have a few bottles of Northern Lights real ale. This is a family run business, husband, wife and two daughters. We found them to be courteous, helpful, very professional and friendly. We left feeling very contented. We wish them well in these very difficult covid times.

Lovely service and good for a mid day snack. We tried the soup and omelette. Both very tasty. Will visit again, when next in Thurso.

We had, after a cold and damp rugby game, a very lovely dinner - amazing food and a good wine selection. I am glad we booked up front and ensure we got a table. The staff, and the food, was as good as could be expected but we should have been offered water. a tiny, but important, point.

WE looked at the menu from outside the restaurant and I was looking for Lemon Sole on the menu. I did not see any but went in to book a table for that evening. I asked about Lemon Sole and the young lady said "let me call the owner he is in the basement" I said not to fuss but she said no problem A few minutes later the owner came up and I was talking about Lemon Sole being my favourite fish, and as we lived in Australia it was not available. Without a moments notice he called his supplier to ask if there was any Lemon Sole on todays` catch, there was so he ordered two fish for me.We arrived and had a beautiful starter and then the Lemon Sole was cooked to perfection. We also had a glorious dessert. The owner came and chatted with us telling us how he prepares ALL his ingredients himself. I have never had such and wonderful meal and to have the owner/Chef go to this bother for me was beyond Good ServiceSo if anyone is going to or passing Thurso in Scotland please stop in to this amazing restaurant and experience food like never before. You wll not be disappointed

A small group of us visited Bydand for our Christmas night out and we all agreed the food was out of this world! Staff were friendly and made sure we had everything we needed. The chef even popped up at the end of our meal to check everything has been to our liking. We will most definitely be back!

Went to Bydand Restaurant last night (Friday 06/12/19) for a meal with work colleagues for a fairwell dinner for my boss, there were 14 of us and from the minute we arrived the staff were very pleasant and made sure we were happy with everything, everyone enjoyed their meal tremendously, all of the food was exceptional and there were no complaints. we will definitely return.

Very enjoyable meal efficiently served and very good value. I was quite surprised to find this level quality in such a relatively small city. I would definitely visit again were I to be back I the area.

One of the best meals I have had in Scotland for years. This includes some top restaurants in Edinburgh and Glasgow. This is a special family run restaurant and I could not recommended it enough.

Came in for lunch, the restaurant was not busy and only 1 member of staff visible.

Had two visits here to eat and both times the food and service were exceptional. The food is fresh , locally sourced & very tasty . A great choice of food at varying prices but all good value . So many things to recommend, I could have tried everything on the menu but the duck & the beef cheeks were delicious. The deserts are made freshly by the chef & it makes all the difference. They are just lovely . The waitress was very nice and good and the chef owner came out and had a chat . Lovely people

A group of us had dinner here while on a tour of Scotland. The local salmon was the best I have ever had. The chicken Bydand dish was also a real favorite. Great choice for desserts. Everyone loved his/her meal and the warm atmosphere at Bydand. Chef/owner Brian came out to greet us after the meal. It was a memorable night. We made reservations ahead of time and very glad we did.

Absolutely sensational food-had the carrot & coriander soup time start, my partner had steamed haddock and I had the beef cheek. Everything was cooked to perfection, tasted sublime and the service prompt. Highly recommended!

Ten of us had a business dinner, superb choice of dishes, prime ingredients sourced locally. Full marks given by our Canadian (& one American!) visitors. Exceptional value and great ambience, front of house Angela looked after us all, Brian cooked finding time to greet us all afterwards. Highly recommended

We (a couple) stayed over in Thurso for a night and had booked our evening meal at a seafront restaurant. Then the place had to keep closed for the evening so we called for an 'emergency booking' at Bydand. Our Shetland Scallop starters were the best we've ever tasted an our main: Seabass also kept to highest standards. Along with a good bottle of wine and nice staff this made it a great experience!

Staff were friendly and welcomed us although they were busy. We had to wait for our food order to be taken but were quite happy as we had been told this and relaxed over drinks.

We were just walking around Thurso when we came across Bydand, what a discovery!!

I and my family were told to come back to the restaurant at 7:30pm, due to there being to many tables reserved. Therefore not accepting walk ins. We waited and hour and 10 minutes waiting for our food, no apology. It took them until when we payed for the food for them to say “ sorry we had a party upstairs, our waitresses told everyone that there would be a long wait “. Funny enough, the waitresses didn’t tell us. And didn’t acknowledge the wait at all. I said” We never heard that”, (referring to her saying the waitresses told us about the party). She just shrugged and said that they could take the garlic bread of the bill, worth 2.50. Absolutely ridiculous to act in such a manner, and to not acknowledge. What not recommend this 3 grade service. Horrible

Absolutely delicious Portobello mushrooms with goats cheese and leeks, plus a rocket pear and walnut salad. And good Orkney beer to set it all off. Great service, a friendly fire burning altogether a super atmosphere - thank you Byand!

Came across this restaurant by accident whilst walking round Thurso with my husband and son. Friendly staff, good choice of food, excellent value for money. Between us we had lamb, sea bass and salmon - all cooked to perfection. Puddings were great too and we shall certainly be back to sample the Orkney fudge cheesecake! This is quite a small restaurant so it is advisable to book in advance.

The manager apologised for the wait we may have as it was unusually busy. The general atmosphere was pleasant so we could sit and chat in comfort. No problem with the requested 'gluten-free roll'. The meal was very good. The price was right!

Writing review with context this is a small town so should not expect too much. Nice ambiance but rather average food. Red wine by glass limited to one very weak choice. Came to the place due to TA reviews. Overall not that impressed but OK. Therefore considering context a 4 review

My wife and I serendipitously came across this restaurant while taking a side trip to Thurso. What a gem. Beautiful Haddock and Chips. Very Fresh. Amazing Short Ribs. The staff was courteous. We would definitely go back and recommend it to all of our friends.

We had the pleasure of dining here in may a group of us on a road trip from ireland. The food was excellent. The staff were extremely friendly and the owner gave us some great advice on what roads to take. If your looking for a relaxing and comfortable place to eat. Stop here. Very good value for money and you wont be hungry leaving.

My husband and I found this restaurant while walking around Thurso. It is right on the main road and what a find. We had excellent service and the food was excellent. The menu was small but diverse. You could tell that our meals were freshly prepared and good ingredients. The fitout of the restaurant was clean and modern. We had a wonderful dinner - thank you.

Looking for a change from the hotel so headed to Bydand service was fast and efficient, the menu pleasingly short as meals are cooked fresh. The welcome was warm by Scottish standards and the food ok. The place was busy so large groups would definitely need to book. I opted for the locally landed sea bass simple but well cooked.

Incredible food and wonderful service. We were a very big family group (17 people, from different countries, from grandchildren to grandparents) and Brian, his wife and their team were extremely patient and accomodating. Everything we had was delicious. As everything is cooked to order, Brian even sent us the menu that afternoon so that we could reserve items for our dinner later just in case things run out. If you are in the Northeast of Scotland, 100% worth a visit! In my opinion, this should be a staple of the NC500 and the Visit Scotland Tourism Board.

We were surprised this place was top of trip advisor having eaten there. The food was simple and quite good but we have eaten much better on the north coast 500. Cullen skink wasn't very good, macaroni cheese pasta was overcooked and needed a topping although the beef was very well cooked

My wife and I ate here on 3 consecutive evenings as we were so impressed after the first encounter. Friendly accommodating staff, fresh food beautifully cooked and reasonably priced including the wine list. A highlight in Thurso!

We arrived very late - just before closing - and didn’t feel rushed at all. We had great fresh scallops, really good steamed haddock and good vegetarian options - portobello mushrooms with goat cheese.

Locally sourced, good quality, well prepared food at reasonable prices. We didn't have a reservation, and they were able to accommodate us at 630 pm on a Tuesday. It's a small place though, so booking advised.

Klein, fein, nettes Service-Personal, Essen gut angerichtet, Vegetarische Optionen vorhanden die auch gut schmecken, haben zwei Nächte in Thurso verbracht und sind nach dem ersten Abendessen gleich noch ein zweites Mal am nächsten Tag hingegangen.

We had a brilliant lunch here. The food was excellent with fast and friendly service. Very family friendly our kids loved the children's menu. Great selection of light bites aswell as main meals. Will definitely be back!

Excellent food, service, and price. this place is amazing was recommended to us as we were waiting for our car to be MOT went in for a coffee/tea and ended up having a Scottish breakfast and a haggis balls with whiskey cream sauce starter, and two pots of tea. The atmosphere and decoration is fabulous.

We had dinner here last night as a group of friends. The atmosphere was great, the lady who served us was very friendly and informative about places to visit on our trip around the NC500. The food was great I had the cheeks which were amazing. All the deserts were top notch as well. Overall a great meal. Well worth a visit.
