Came for my sons birthday and got the chicken & prawn dish to take away for my mum as the last time she had it she really enjoyed it but it only had 2 prawns in the whole dish but plenty of chicken & as it was chicken & prawn she felt very disappointed

Food was superb, I had the salmon, asparagus and pappardelle from the specials board and it was fantastic, commented on this to the chef and the owner and said it ought to be made a permanent fixture on the menu. What is particularly great about this place is that if there is something you particularly like that you have had before then if you call in advance they will try to accommodate you.

I have attended this restaurant several times and it never fails to deliver excellent food and service. The portions are huge so make sure you go with a big appetite!

Beautiful food in a lovely atmosphere. We have been as groups and for romantic evenings and with friends .Always beautiful staff are super friendly and service is good. Food is good sized portions and very tasty. Can get busy so book beforehand.

Our friends introduced us to La Anchor last night and we were so pleased they did as it is now my favourite place to eat!

We ate here last night (Sun 5th May). Nicely presented restaurant. The staff were very friendly and the prices were reasonable. Four of us ate here and we all enjoyed the food but despite us sharing starters none of us could finish the mains as they were huge. Table after table were taking home food in boxes due to the huge quantities which just seems to be a bit silly and the ones that didn’t take it home the food was thrown away.

What a find!! The food was to die for and the staff were so friendly and attentive! We will definitely be returning x

Visited this little gem twice now and must say it's fantastic,the food is beautiful and portions are huge excellent value for money. The staff can't do enough for you and the owner was lovely,please visit you won't be disappointed but book in advance or you'll struggle to get in it's that popular.

Have visited La Anchor on numerous occasions ( used to live round the corner ) We have, the majority of the time, had a pretty decent meal but the last couple occasions have been rather disappointing which included our meal tonight.

The quiet rural village betrays the popular and busy atmosphere in the la Anchor Italian restaurant. You are greeted with warm smiles by the staff and taken to your table in the modern styled room. The traditional Italian menu doesn't hint at the quality or quantity of the food that will be served. The fresh food takes a little time to arrive which is reassuring, and both the quality and quantity of the food is outstanding. Only the brave would take on three courses!!!!!!!! An excellent experience.

My new favourite place to eat, the food is to die for, the staff are really helpful and friendly and the owner Nick is such a nice guy and he has done wonders with this place.

I have heard plenty of good things about La Anchor from friends yet had never been myself till last night. If it hadn't of been for my friends reviews I wouldn't have known it even existed.

This was our 2nd visit & came on Mother's Day...was ready for the usual mental lunch but again was lovely not too busy as Nick knows how to space his sittings out

Even though they were obviously very busy, the staff were very friendly and efficient, great service. I had calamari for starters, followed by lobster ravioli, both of which were delicious. Great portion sizes and reasonably priced. What's not to like? Thought the complimentary box of chocolates for all the Mums was a lovely touch. Thank you for making my day special. Well worth the 40 minute drive from Leeds.

Yesterday, we were lucky enough to dine here, as a family for Mother’s Day. It was brilliant from start to finish. The staff were so friendly, made sure we were all comfortable and the chef even came around the tables to ensure everyone was ok with the food. The food is brilliantly priced for the quality and portion size - it was delicious! There were 10 of us, so we had a range of foods and most had 3 courses, every single meal was thoroughly enjoyed. The children had pizzas and they were able to make their own and they were taken away to be cooked, lovely touch and the children thoroughly enjoyed. At the end of the meal, the owner of the restaurant, brought all the Mum’s on the table a box of chocolates for Mother’s Day, a great gesture.

We visited La Anchor last Friday evening to celebrate our wedding anniversary.

After visiting our favourite restaurant this afternoon with a large party of 13 we just felt we needed to thank Nick and his wonderful staff for a fabulous meal great service topped off with a very thoughtful gesture of presenting all the mums with a box of chocolates .

Would highly recommend this lovely local family orientated restaurant! The Manager and staff recently helped organise a wonderful celebration for 14 people, including 2 children, for an 80th birthday. The food was superb, great menu and specials board with lots of choice at decent prices. The chefs here know how to cook well! The staff were friendly and attentive and the head chef came to check everything had been to our liking. If you want something in particular just ask in advance and they will do their best to accommodate. Thank you very much for a delightful evening, we’ll certainly be back.

Four of us visited on a midweek evening and it was pretty busy. We were welcomed and seated by the friendly owner. We shared a cheese and garlic bread for starters as we had heard the portions are really big. For mains I had the penne with chicken and prawns. The portion was pretty big with loads of fat prawns and plenty of chicken. The sauce was delicious too. My three friends all had oven cooked pasta dishes which they were very pleased with. Four empty plates later we were too full for dessert. The waitresses were very smiley and friendly throughout and the surroundings were very pleasant.Prices were very reasonable too. Definitely recommended.

By far the best pasta I’ve ever had. Five of us ate here and all the dishes were superb,perfectly presented and fresh. The staff could not be any more friendly,helpful and efficient. Just want to say a big thank you once again for another unforgettable meal. It was our son’s 18th birthday and all the family were there - 11 of us! The menu provided so many tempting choices and as our son is a lover of good steaks (cooked rare) he was delighted with an enormous steak, cooked to perfection and it was exceptional.

I had my birthday meal here and we had a group of 19 people. They accomadated us really well and sat us all close together. We pre-ordered all our food via email and the staff were amazing in sorting all of this out for us!

This is an excellent restaurant. The staff are most welcoming, and the food cannot be faulted. The house wines, of course, are Italian, and my husband was dubious. However he had a large glass of white, and I had the rose. Both were really good. The food portions are large and delicious. Can’t wait to go again!

When you first walk into the restaurant everyone is so warm and welcoming. Customer service is 10 out 10 all the staff are very friendly. You are looked after and nothing is too much trouble. I ordered the Lobster Ravioli with Brandy Sauce - it was divine - fresh pasta was used. My friend had the Penne Al Forno. Over the years he has been to many Italian Restaurants and said this meal was the best he had ever tasted. We had white wine with our meal unsure of the brand but very pleasing to the taste bud, and finished off our meal with the Peanut Cheesecake. I won't be leaving the next visit until my next birthday.

I live 10 mins from this restaurant and yet only visited for the first time last night.

Despite booking a table for 8 on a Saturday only a few days before we were all absolutely delighted by the owners amazing customer service . He went out of his way to accommodate us, putting balloons on table and preparing a 80th birthday pudding for mums celebrations. Everything was perfect the food fantastic, portions huge, authentic Italian food at it's best. House wine was fab and the girls waiting on us were lovely. Our grandson age 1 was catered for and made welcome. Pasta to die for ..Steak wow !!!! Great choices of every course ..we all had different food everyone remarked that it was so tasty . Having been once we're back again tonight.....and can't wait to return with more friends... planning another visit again ...Thank you so much

Visited this evening and was great. We’ve been before quite a few times and it’s always good. It was quite busy but service still good and friendly. My husband had the Beef Stroganoff from the Specials board. He loved it. I had a taste and I loved it too. Massive portion so brought 3/4 of it home. Couldn’t manage a dessert at the table from the lovely choices, so brought that home too. Will definitely be going again and would definitely recommend.

We visited LA Anchor on a Friday evening and were very impressed! The restaurant was busy but had a nice cosy atmosphere and the staff were all very attentive. Service was good throughout and the food was great. Extremely good value too considering how good the food was. Will definitely be going back - it's very much located off the beaten track, but it's worth finding!

The food was spectacular and the service was faultless. Completely and utterly worth the 30 minute journey for the best italian around.

I am going to take my own advice and book next time especially on the busy nights. No room for the puddings but they looked amazing!

The food here was amazing. We went on a recommendation and we were not disappointed. We arrived and were offered a drink whilst our table was prepared. There could be a larger selection of brat beers but luckily I liked what was on. We sat down and looked at the menus. There was a large selection and options to add extras.

My in-laws were recommended to try this restaurant by some friends so we visited last night for a birthday meal and we were far from disappointed!! It's a lovely, cosy and intimate environment with warm and attentive staff and an open view into the kitchen (and the desert fridge!) which makes the place smell incredible! We had a mixture of starters; Mozerella sticks, calamari and garlic mushrooms and crusty bread which were thoroughly enjoyed. The main menu consisted of only pizza/calzone and pastas (everything from spaghetti, to ravioli and gnocci!) But as somebody who is watching what they eat.. I turned to the specials menu and had the chicken dish (paciaciola or something along those lines!) and veg whilst my boyfriend had a calzone, father and brother in law had steaks and mother in law had a lasagne-type dish. Oh. My. Lord. Wow!! The steaks were the size of small cows (and that's only the 17oz fillet!), the calzone was packed with meat (picture doesn't do it justice), and my chicken dish was nothing short of the same quality - it was huge! Mother in law had zero complaints about her meal either. My health kick was quickly intercepted at the mention of puddings and I simply couldn't say no to chocolate fudge cake and ice cream.. Again.. Incredible.

Such lovely food, good service and I definitely recommend to everyone. Should give it a try, you will not be disappointed :)

Wow! A friend of mine lives in Howden and they recommended this place... we live in Hull so it was a good drive... but bloody hell it was worth it!!

Booked a meal for my mum's birthday as we've been here several times. As usual food portions huge and quality was excellent. The owner, chef and waitresses were all really friendly and we will be returning. They also gave mum a lovely dessert to celebrate her birthday. Thank you for making it special

This Italian restaurant is in the village of Hensall about 3 - 4 miles from exit 34 (Eggborough) of the M62.

Best steak in the area! Highly recommended. Love this restaurant. Have been several times now and they never fail on the quality.

Well what can we say! We’ve been eating in this place for a little while and have NEVER been disappointed. So much so that it was our first choice restaurant when planning a family Christmas night out. My dad is a BIG meat eater and having heard about and seen some of the biggest tastiest steaks decided he would ‘go large’. I spoke to the owner and the chef... both are absolute diamonds and so friendly. We had a giggle about the size of what was to come.... OMG it was 87oz. Cooked to perfection and tasted delicious! The other meal were sensational! We will be eating it for a week! Fantastic service and fantastic food! Highly recommended!

This is a lovely restaurant. Had 3 corses and 2 rounds of drinks for under £70 which was excellent value. Staff were all very pleasant and proffesional. The place is very stylish with a good atmospher. Only down side for me was we was seated at the front it felt bit like we wasnt part of the rest of the restaurant and it was quite dark there. I would still highly recomend this place

La Anchor surpassed our expectations on Saturday night. My wife and I and 8 friends met up for a meal at the restaurant, and what a find it was. What can I say, the staff were so accommodating and very pleasant and nothing was to much trouble. The food was excellent a great choice of Italian food and a specials board. The portion sizes are generous but are happy to provide a doggy bag for you. The prices are very reasonable.

My family and I often visit La Anchor and I don’t think we’ve ever left disappointed. The service is always great and the food is out of this world. The portion sizes are more than generous - you will never leave hungry and most likely with a doggy bag. The prices are also very fair, considering the amount of food you actually get. There are always specials listed and it is always so hard to choose from that or the actual menu. My grandad has a copy of the menu and is ticking off everything he’s had and trying to make his way through the whole thing...

La Anchor surpassed our expectations on a Saturday night when the restaurant was really busy. A very experienced team who know how to look after the customer. It was a family meal, we ordered Calamari, dough balls and tomato garlic bread starters. Lobster ravioli, Lasagne, Carbonara and Penne al Forno. All were excellent but huge portions, not a problem as they are more than happy to box up any left overs for you to take home.

I want to be clear that this is a really positive review and that on the whole we had a great experience. One small niggle, if addressed would have made it perfect. I'll explain...

An absolutely wonderful experience from start to finish. the staff were very attentive and polite. We were attended to very quickly, the menu is varied and the food is superb, very well prepared and presented. The portions are large and quite a few people took away doggy bags. (Try the mint Aero cheesecake for desert) but get one to share it`s huge. This place is well worth a visit. I will definitely be back and intend to introduce my friends to this lovely place.

Yesterday was the wedding of my son Jon to Emma. We had a lovely day which was made more special with the wedding meal at La Anchor in evening. We took over the whole restaurant. The venue is beautiful, intimate but with space and the ambience is sublime. I have not had such a warm welcome from a restaurant owner in a very long time as I did from Nick. In fact all the staff were amazing, absolutely nothing was too much trouble for any one. They made every request a pleasure. Now to the food! Where do I start...... it was just perfect. My only complaint was that my tummy just couldn’t eat it all. However for anyone wanting to...... a doggie bag was provided. Guess I’m finishing my rib eye steak today for dinner then. I cannot rate this restaurant enough that seems to do the whole evening justice. So Nick and your whole team....... Thank You. Jon’s mum xx

Never fails to impress with great food cooked in sight. Great for me as a none cheese eater as lots of alternatives such as lobster ravioli or pasta with prawns and chicken in creamy brandy sauce.

First time visit. Due to the previous couple arriving half an hour late, our booked table was still in use when we arrived and the main part of the restaurant was very busy, which wasn't what we wanted for a special occasion. The owner, who lives in the village explained the circumstances, apologised, waited for a few minutes until the other couple had finished their main course and asked them if they would mind having their desserts at another table, which they kindly did. The potentially awkward situation was well managed and while we waited the owner sat and chatted about the food and how the restaurant was run with a simple menu but properly done, cooked to order and made on the premises with fresh ingredients. We had garlic mushrooms, wonderful fresh baked bread, olives and dips for starters with main courses of ravioli and a house speciality, pasta nicola. Everything arrived quickly and was excellent, perfectly cooked, tasty, served piping hot and without any of the excess oil so often found in Mediterranean restaurants . A complimentary dessert also arrived as 'Happy Birthday' played through the sound system. With 3 1/2 pints of premium Moretti lager the bill came to £54 which is superb value for food of this quality in portions so large almost everyone leaves carrying foil containers. The venue is nicely decorated in a simple bistro style with good background music played at exactly the right volume. Every member of staff was friendly, helpful, efficient and seemed happy to be working there (always a good sign). We had a very enjoyable evening and came away with the distinct impression that a lot of thought and effort goes into this restaurant and it shows. Highly recommended but book early because it is understandably always busy and request a window table if you want a quiet atmosphere.

A owner more interested in profit than given customers that had come out for a nice relaxed meal and a chat service . I’ve been to football matches that have been quieter a large table of lads that was swearing and being very loud and two children under 10 on the next table with there parents wasn’t very impressed either. I did ask the waitress and expressed my disappointment and nothing seemed to happen but the owner was happy to keep pouring beer and £4.80 a pint . We will not be visiting here again

Went to 'La Anchor Bar & Restaurant' for the first time last night! I was not disappointed - I had the Pasta Nicola which was full of flavour and the portion size will leave few going hungry! The dessert I had was equally as delicious!

Amazing staff, amazing food, great portions, amazing atmosphere. It’s faultless. Great to go as big families or small couples. Good choice of drinks too for the size of it.

My eightieth birthday was coming and we had to decide where to hold the party for relatives and other guests. My wife and I are Yorkshire born but living near Southport. As many of our family members live in Yorkshire we decided to arrange the party there. On the recommendation of my daughter we settled on La Anchor in Hensall and we were certainly not disappointed.

We were looking for a pub for a last minute family meal however the pub we found had closed down so as we parked up looking for places to eat we found La Anchor.

Me and my partner wanted to try somewhere new for our 10 year anniversary meal and this restaurant really did give us a night to remember, i cant recommend it enough. The portions are really generous and the food quality, flavours and presentation are . We both had the prawns off the specials board and there were so many of them i would say around 15 king prawns each. I had the pasta Nicola for main with steak and spinach it was delicious my partner had a chicken breast, king breast and chorizo dish from the specials board which he said was amazing. We were so full we had no room for dessert which did look really nice in the desert cabinet. You can also request a dish at booking if they dont have it on the menu and they will make it specially for you. We have booked to go back .

Have been several times and for me this is the best restaurant around. Warm and Freindly staff, the owner goes out of his way to accommodate you. The food is deliciously superb, and the Lobster ravioli is fantastic . I would happily recommend this place without a doubt, good value for your money and great service.

Always cooked fresh and will always get steak in if they know you definitely want it. Nice atmosphere. Everyone we have taken with us have loved it and will return. Can't wait for my next visit.

Have visited this place many times, after being introduced to it on my friends birthday a couple of years ago, I have taken loads of my own family and other friends on various occasions.Food is to die for the taste of everything is amazing. Visited this evening and had a drink sat out in the sun- could very easily have been abroad! Efficient service from Melissa and a great meal from start to finish (thanks Tony).Prawns in garlic and chilli sauce were amazing and pasta with chicken and spinach was best I've tasted. My partner had the ravioli and said it was very tasty! We get small portions and as you can see from the photo they are still very generous.House red wine reasonably priced and good flavour. We are very lucky to have this on our doorstep!

I had seen La anchor rated at some time as first on trip.I drove past it some time ago and thought it only a pub.Tried it this Sunday and was amazed, yes really.There is so much effort put into the food.This is a special place.It is not pricey at all and the food is on the mark.I would recommend you try this restaurant out.

Decided to try this restaurant after being told how good it was.On our arrival we were greeted by the owner who took us to the bar and asked us to order our drinks whilst our table was being prepared. We didn't have to wait long and we were shown to our table.Our waitress arrived shortly and told us the specials for the evening and gave us our menu. I was a little disappointed at the menu which was a little limited, no steaks or seafood selection but mayority of Italian food what you would expect from and Italian restaurant. I really was hoping for a lovely piece of fillet steak after seeing other diners review on here, so when our waitress arrived to take our order I asked if there was fillet available, she said she needed to ask the chef so she went into the kitchen. Thankfully when she returned after a couple of minutes she said there was fillet available. We ordered our starters and mains and when they came they were a very generous portion, my garlic mushrooms were delicious and the sauce beautiful and my hubby had bruschetta, which he said was very tastyOur mains came a good 10/15mins later which was good because we were very full from our starters and they were huge!! We asked what size our fillets were and we were told 30oz, needless to say I only managed 1/4 but I'm not a big eater, it was cooked to perfection and my sauce (red wine) went beautifully with it ( other sauces were offered) as well as the steak it came with a selection of seasonal veg or chips/salad.I asked to take my steak home and the happily took it away and gave me it back in a takeaway carton. My husband finished all his and said it was the best steak he'd had for a long time. After our main we were offered a choice of desserts or tea/coffeeThe dessert menu had a good selection to choose from and my husband decided to go for the chocolate fudge cake but had to go for the cream because they had run out of vanilla ice cream but he said it was very rich & choclaty and delicious.This is a lovely little restaurant in a quiet little village and would definitely recommend and will be going again

We arrived 5 minutes early at 5-25 for our booked table. The booking was found and we were then asked at the bar if we would like a drink. Having duly ordered and received we were then told somebody would come and show us to our table but we were left standing for at least 5 minutes, not a good start! However the food was excellent, the service quick and efficient and the bill modest for the 3 courses and drinks. This is a popular restaurant in an unlikely spot but it does need to make sure guests feel wanted and welcome.

Nick the owner and his team bend over backwards to ensure you have a great night. We were there celebrating our anniversary, and as we arrived we were congratulated. Seated to our table with fizz, fine wine, great food and a promise that there is no way you will leave hungry, the portions are amazing! Topped off with lovely Italian limoncello on the house and a smile from a friendly helpful waitress ...... Perfect evening! Thank you!

I have visited many restaurant over the years but this will take some beating. A hidden gem in a quiet village but packed with atmosphere from the welcoming owners and staff. Our party consisted of a 5 week old baby through to my 80 year old nanna whose birthday we were celebrating and nothing was too much trouble from setting the table with balloons through to bringing out the cake. But what can I say about the food. I have been left speechless. DELICIOUS (and yes I am shouting) MOUTHWATERING, FILLING, COOKED TO PERFECTION and I could go on. You will see from my pictures that portion size is not an issue. I ordered fillet steak (as did another 2 in my party) and I got 6 of them all perfectly cooked to my liking. The cook came out and spoke to us and the owners spent time with us at the end of our meal which all added to the welcoming feel. Now price, I could not believe our bill and this is in a good way. For what we had, I expected having to get a bank loan. How surprised was I. Fantastic value for money. Let's just say I will definitely be visiting this place again. I cannot recommend it enough and worth the journey.

Tried to book on a Monday for my wife's birthday - but - sadly closed [ except for bank holidays]. So went on the Tuesday, for a very early booking meal [ 5.45pm] as we were looking after my grandson the next day [ from 06.30am]. Arrived at appointed time - purchased a "long drink" at the bar, [ at reasonabl;e prices - peroni on draught. Then shown to our table to review the menu.My wife did not want a starter - she's a "sweet girl", but i selected the mushrooms served in garlic, and a sauce. Massive portion of mushrooms, the sauce was a little thin, [ the only part of the meal to follow] my preference would have been a little thicker - but that's all.Ordered Pizza Americana to share, + onion salad. Extremely tasty, plentiful, & enjoyable.Two massive sweets from a good selection & choice.Overall costs about £37.00 which was i think good value overall.The place is very nice, you can see the kitchens and see the two chefs working [ on our night], good serving staff [ though a little inexperinced], small but comprehensive blackboard menu with meats & fish, though menu predominantly "Italian" as you would expect. Good generous portions that i could see from our service & other diners meals. Thoroughly enjoyed the experince & will certainly return in future months.It's reputation is well deserved !!

What a gem of a place! Looks like a pub from the outside, but very much bar/bistro inside. Good choice of starters and mains - mostly pasta and pizza. Our food was utterly delicious and I was very sad not to be able to finish my dish of tagliatelle con pollo e spinache. The puds looked amazing, but we couldn't manage one after a starter and main each. We asked if they would do take-away puds and it was no problem - so there's a slice of carrot cake and a portion of tiramisu in the fridge waiting until we're ready for it. The house wine was really good too. Not cheap - our bill for two courses, a salad to share and two small glasses of wine came to £54. But it was worth every penny! Thank you.PS - they will do half portions of the mains on request! Great idea. Wish I'd remembered to ask when we ordered. I'd have been able to manage a pud then :-)

Visited with a small party last week. La Anchor is one of Yorkshire's big surprises. Food was excellent and promptly served. Staff were friendly and the final bill did not break the bank. Word of warning - unless you are REALLY hungry skip the starter course which comes in main course size portions! But recommend arriving hungry and enjoy it all.We will definitely re-visit.A real draught beer at the bar would be the icing on the cake.
