Kwans Chinese Restaurant in Scottish Borders

We had a really good meal tonight from Kwans couldn't be better. Really recommend it.

Food was pathetic, worst takeaway I have had.

Lordy lord if anyone from south edinburgh (burdiehouse area) reads this then this is the closest to Linda's as your going to get! I was recommended this place by a mate and she hit the nail in the head the food was out of this world fresh oil veg cooked perfect, their sweet and sour chilli beef was that good you would sell your yer maw for a plate of it everything was 10/10 deffo my go to place now 1 trillion %

Absolute garbage. Hot and sour soup was disgusting, neither hot nor sour just a weird taste. Fried rice curry sauce was boiled rice stuck together in big clumps with a dribble of curry sauce. Satay sauce was awful. Noodles were the only thing just about edible. Worst food I've ever had the misfortune of eating. If you think this passes as good Chinese you clearly have never left the Borders.

Not from the area so relied on reviews to find this place Wasn’t disappointed! Food was of an excellent standard & had clearly been cooked fresh to order Called ahead to place an order staff member was polite ,arrived to collect order twenty minutes later Recommend the Singapore chow mein Curry sauce was also really flavourful with just the right amount heat Salt and chilli chicken was also cooked fresh and tasty,will definitely visit here again when back in the area Very reasonable prices for the quality

Ordered prawn satay Malaysian style with rice and prawn toast. Was absolutely delicious. Will definitely be returning again. Food tasted freshly home made, one of the best Chinese meals we've had.

Absolutely awful. Chinese food at its very worst. And expensive too for mediocrity. The crispy shredded chicken in Peking sauce wasn't crispy or shredded and the very red sauce was gloopy and full of MSG. The duck with spring onions appeared to be boiled with fatty skin and not a spring onion to be seen !! The bulk of the dish was white onions and 6 ptiny pieces of fatty duck. The fried rice was like boiled rice with a bit of a bit of oil chucked in for colour. No egg etc.. One of the worst Chinese meals I've ever tasted. Do NOT go to Kwan's !!!!!

Absolutely shocking service opened at 4.15 rand at 5.30 told food is ready but hasn’t left yet 🤷‍♀️ Told them to cancel order if i doesn’t get here for 6pm !!! Girl on phone very rude I had asked if they could maybe make content with driver via radio phone or Wally talky even she then replied In a sarcastic voice “walky talkies “! We’ll really awesome customer service 6.05 pm so food if it appears is being returned

Had a meal and some of the guys had a meal a couple of nights, curry was really nice well worth the visit if in area, it’s a shame they don’t do a sit in as this would of suited our meal night

Was told hour and a half but food came cold had to microwave everything phoned up and was told it had been to Kelso duns and then cold stream but duns was further than cold and then was told I did say that it was going to be an hour and a half but then got hanged up on will never be back attitude was disgusting never again do not recommend..

Ordered a takeaway at 6:30pm. Was told 1 hour. Went there at 7:30pm then left with a refund and no food at 8:40pm. Shocking service

Ordered a mixed vegetable chow mein, there was pieces of chicken in my dish. I phoned them to let them know and was given an excuse that the box of vegetables and box of chicken sit next to each other and that must be why it had happened. No apology. No obvious concern for the cross contamination that had happened. Poor customer service on the phone. Sub par food. And if they are that lax about cross contamination I would be very concerned about anyone with allergies getting food from there. I will say however, the two young girls that served us when we went in to order were nice and helpful.

Friday I ordered ribs in BBQ sauce and chips. As others have reported chips were very dry and tasteless. Ribs were grey and tasteless, sauce thin watery and tasteless. Probably the worst ribs I've ever had. Thought I'd give it another chance so on Saturday ordered Special chow mein in sauce ( minus the chicken ) It was disappointingly tasteless, hardly any sauce and pieces of beef dry, old and chewy, veg and beansprouts over cooked. On both occasions food took way longer than they said ( Saturday phoned order through an hour before and specifically asked it to be ready by 8.00pm - it was not ) Just because a place is busy and apparently popular doesn't mean it's any good ! In this case either the alternative ( Chinese Red ) is worse, or Kwang's customers will put up with less than average food or both ! As an OAP a Chinese meal is a rare treat for me. Kwangs food certainly isn't that. I for one won't ever be gong back.

Ordered takeaway at 5pm on xmas eve - order arrived at 7.30pm. Our order, based on their facebook menu should have been £32 - we were charged £41. Given our wait, I simply paid and didn’t kick up a fuss. Food was cold and in my meal I picked out 2 long black hairs. Absolute joke.

Can be hit or miss to be honest. Often greasy but can also be lovely. Worth trying for yourself anyway.

Delicious food, ordered and collected in 20 mins, piping hot and tasty, nice friendly girls at reception. We were staying in Kelso for our holiday and loved the food from Kwan's.

This one is tough to review. The wonton soup is fragrant and delicious, the battered chicken with sweet and sour sauce is crispy, juicy and succulent and well seasoned, the prawns in satay sauce were gorgeous and all dishes seem to come with a healthybalanceofveggies. The beef in Blackbean sauce was OK but we think let the side down (either that or the prawn crackers) as several of us had loose bowels after consumption. Highly Recommend the chef reduces the menu choices massively and focuses on authentic Chinese dishes ensuring fresh ingredients in a clean kitchen are always used. The cooking is too good to be undermined like this.

We Ordered our meal and l was told it would be 25 mins, I arrived at 6.40 to collect, and didn’t leave with the meal until 7.35. I asked twice what the hold up was and was met with a vague explanation of waiting on something cooking. When our name was eventually called there wasn’t even an apology, customer service was non existent, absolute disgrace !!

Food is fabulous, large servings, staff very friendly and welcoming.

Strange times, COVID restrictions in place remember. I phoned at 1833hrs (there's a fb page but no online ordering) and asked for beef curry fried rice, special curry boiled rice and rice & chips with sweet and sour sauce so nothing weird. The chap told me 40 minutes but I realised when walking round it was cash only (£20.12) and I only had contactless or a card so returned for the folding stuff putting me comfortably over the 40 minutes. On arrival the shop was pretty packed, with a more or less orderly queue of bodies outside except for a throng at the door. I went straight in to collect my food and when at the counter alas!...not ready, but they kindly relieved me of the money and sent me outside to the cold, dark and drizzly night. The next 20 minutes dragged by before being called forward to collect my food at the still throngy door. Some had brought vehicles and sat listening to Radio 3 Live from the Met with demisters and engines running on a narrow street with people occasionally spilling onto the roadway-as the weather worsens so will this aspect of carry out food while-you-wait. The food is still tasty, I especially like the cut and texture of the onions, all correct, no complaints. Just need more planning the next time. Or the server to be realistic with a pick up time. Maybe they only start cooking once you've paid and are definitely there, but you'd never get them to tell you this anyway, my conjecture only.

For takeaway Chinese food this was good. Collection times were long on Saturday night but it was noticeable that very few locals opted to go over the road to the rival takeaway instead. The duck was very tasty.

Arrived in Kelso area for a long weekend and had recommendation from local hotel. The food was delivered in the stated time frame and still red hot. All dishes were excellent and we enjoyed them all. The cost for two starters, two mains and two sides was reasonable and included delivery and free prawn crackers. If we ever visit the area again we would definitely use them again.

Had food for 8 delivered tonight £90 in total,One of whom has coeliac and is gluten free.Two peoples food entirely missing.When we called they promised to send it.1 hour later still no food.Rang and appalling attitude, .not even an offer of a refund.Diabolical. Seriously consider whether this is the service you want.

Well I use this Chinese all the time and was very disappointed tonight had deep fried chilli beef which is shredded I tasted nothing no beef and sauce was very runny and too many onions in dish went in bin

Food good pity it wasn't what I ordered

Tried various chinese restaurants in the area, and so far this is the best. Been a few times and the food is consistently good.

Have been here since under new management and the food has been amazing but sadly let down by the crispy chicken in peking sause , it was sweet and sour definitely not peking .

If we are ever in this area and they are opne we alwasy get our takeawy from here. It is simply the best in the whol of the Borders area.

£25 odd on a take away to come for the rice to be dry with no sauce even though it was supposed to be mixed in. Go to China red far better. Salt and chilli chips are rubbish too last time I’m going there

Ordered a take away last night from Kwan’s, and on placing the order at 7.30pm I was told it was likely to take up to an hour to driver due then being very busy. As it was Border Union Show weekend this was completely understandable and we were happy to wait, especially as they had informed us.An hour and a half later I rang to check on progress, and was advised that my order was ready and just leaving with the delivery driver.35 minutes later, no sign and no contact from Kwan’s - now 2 hrs after placing the order. Phoned to cancel, explained why and all they had to say was “ok, yeah we are busy”.Absolutely no care or consideration for customer service - imagine what the food must be like if they care that little...

Takeaway last night. Food was not to our taste. We have been before but we thought maybe we made poor choices. The food is like most small town Chinese restaurants, floating in sauce. We are picky, and I know many people go there and are fine with this, but I really wish they could up their game.

Got the salt and chilli squid and the special chow mein. Special chow mein was very tasty, and the squid was good, perhaps a tiny bit overcooked (little bit chewy). Would definitely eat here again. Could be 5 stars, maybe I just got unlucky with the squid this time as the chow mein was so good. I got collection, so cannot confirm if the food would arrive cold (or not) as others have complained about.

Good quality - good prices - nothing outstanding - nothing out of ordinary for this chinese take away restaurant. Well worth a try when you are visiting Kelso.

There was a party of 14 of us and we all threw it away as it was, well not good. They would not take a card payment and over charged us by £18 + pence and we would steer well wide of this place,sorry, I hate to leave a poor review but you had nothing to add a positive.

Food arrived in jedburgh barely even warm-maybe need to invest in something to keep it hotter during transit...also maybe wise to invest in something to keep things upright as my husband ended up with all his sauce in the bag and none in his tub took a photo if you would like it...thankfully there were no holes in the bag so he opted for using it from the bag regardless how much the bag had been handled etc The food was nice but not worth the money to turn up barley warm especially

Desde mi favorito chino cerrado en Kelso (solía trabajar también allí), tuve que buscar una alternativa que me entrega en Jedburgh. Elegí Kwans porque había comido desde allí antes y me impresionó. La comida es sabrosa, como siempre. Me encantan los fideos gruesos. Ha sido entre propietarios desde que empezamos a ordenar, pero la comida siempre ha probado la misma y eso es lo que me mantiene de ordenar. Sólo las cajas de cambios, pero eso no hace diferencia de sabores, etc. El personal es educado y servicial. Sólo he olvidado las fichas una vez, pero no nos importó porque estábamos todos compartiendo así que no puedes perder. La comida Viernes era increíble. El estilo dulce y agria de cerdo cantones es realmente bonito. No es el cerdo con pasta pesada plana correosos estaba acostumbrado en nuestro local en Jedburgh. En realidad adecuado de cerdo marinado con cubos una pasta ligera y la salsa era perfecto. Que con los fideos hace una comida increíble. Lo recomiendo a todo el mundo.

We have enjoyed a number of excellent Chinese Takeaway meals from Kwans. Wide selection, quickly cooked, excellent portion sizes and very tasty.

just ordered sirloin steak and banana fritter cost £10 40 expeted to get chips with it but no chips very small piece of steak we will never go there again never been to a chiness before without getting chips with the steak always had too many chips must be scrooge that was cooking tonight finished cooking our own wouldn,t pay £1.80 so disappointed

First class food never had a bad meal.

What a disappointment ! Just had a take away. Chicken and pineapple - almost all pineapple in a sickly sweet sauce with a few pieces of unrecognisable glibery chicken. Next was the chilli shredded beef , a dish swimming in a different flavoured sauce with shreds of batter. Didn't detect any beef. This is not proper Chinese food. Have some pride in what you are dishing out.

Yo y mi hijo estaban severamente enfermo toda la noche del miércoles con intoxicación el pollo frito con arroz. Debe haber sido cosas antiguas que fue re-climatizada. Nunca he estado tan enfermo! También estoy en las primeras etapas del embarazo, así que tuve que visitar a mi médico para asegurarse de que mi bebé estaba bien.

Very fresh chicken and noodles!

Ordered a take away for a lone traveller, great flavour to the meal, well priced n quickly cooked. All dished up in useful reusable plastic dishes.

Día de las madres, decidimos ir chino. Solía ir Kwan. No sabíamos aún en Kelso pero cambiaron las instalaciones. langostinos dulces y amargos ordenados king, rollitos de primavera y langostino de con cajú. Las gambas en dulce y amargo parecía ser enorme ... hasta que poco en ellos. Lo que era enorme era la pasta que rodean la gamba nórdica. Más pasta de gambas pero sabroso. Los rollitos de primavera tenía muy poco dentro de ellos. La gamba nórdica y anacardo plato tenía una salsa verdoso. No tenía un aspecto atractivo pero sabor era aceptable. Nuevo chino en la misma carretera. Tienes que estamos ansiosos por ver que es mejor. Prueba uno nuevo al lado.

We had an order delivered to our home, the delivery was exceptional the food was still hot and edible right away. The meals were absolutely lovely, with the exception of the Spare Ribs which were not falling off the bone and very dry.

Decided to give this place a try one night for takeout. Quick service, tasty dishes. Worth a try. Enjoyable Chinese, would maybe try the restaurant if in the area again.

A great meal with fabulous service what more could you want. Perhaps a little pricey but hey what isnt in Kelso?

A beautiful restaurant set back from the road, down a wee lane. Excellent decor, relaxed atmosphere, good food.

For what it cost the food wasn't good value for money. 1) Chicken fried rice was dry. Worst fried rice I've had. No egg in it. 2) 2 of us had lemon chicken with fried rice and the chicken barely tasted of lemon and, again, the rice was dry. 3) 4th person had sweet and sour Cantonese chicken with fried rice. Best dish of all but the chicken was dry as was the fried rice. We can definitely say this was the worst Chinese meal we've had and the hill was £60.50. Truly not worth it.

We called a large order in on Sunday. The bill came to £77. We then called back less than a minute later to add an additional dish to our order. When our food arrived the driver too over £80 from us but had not delivered the additional dish. We called back 3 or 4 times and was told that the driver would be sent back up with the missing food. This never happened. One of our party went hungry as he was a vegetarian and none of the other dishes were meat free. Appauling service. They were quick enough to take our money though.

Called in this evening, charming young man served us, polite and helpful. Lemon chicken and black bean and beef were delicious. We bought for two and it served three.Very quick . Will defiantly return next time I am in area. Good price too.

i was delighted to find that the Kwans were moving back in. The painters have been busy and everything is now gleaming once again. Food delicious, had black bean and chicken chow mien, both cooked to perfection. Really busy but organised. Worth the wait.
