We arrived without reserving a table 13/11/21 no problem, plenty to choose from menu and specials boards. I had the cheesy fish pie - cant recommend enough was so tasty and the fish pieces were large and even had mussels, the cheese sauce was so tasty and the veg that it came with was spot on plenty to eat. My partner had the chicken and ham pie again the chicken and ham were tender and tasty came with chips and peas with a gravy he couldnt fault it. Said was the best pub pie he had ever eaten. Nice surrounds and very clean.

Been to The Kings Head many times previously and was always guaranteed good food. However the most recent visit was very disappointing. Chicken starter was dry and can with some very odd sides. The beef medallions were poor with onions rings drowned in greasy batter and a pitiful single tomato and mushroom. The poor serving staff looked stressed and inexperienced but if this is the standard of food being sent from the kitchen I should think they get a hard time each time they work. All in all…I won’t be rushing back any time soon.

We arrived at the kings head for a family meal about 4.30/5. To start with the service was below average the staff were not interested and did not appear to be enjoying their jobs, we was not asked how our meals were (terrible) and no attempt was made to rectify this when made aware. One of the kids meals we ordered came to the table wrong but was not changed and the main meal ordered by myself was extremely poor and disappointing. I ordered medallions of beef fillet and what arrived was a few scraps of a grey fatty looking meat which begrudgingly I tried and it tasted as bad as it looked, if not worse, needless to say I did not eat any further and picked on a few chips. We sat at the table with our plates in front of us for a while before someone came to take them away, not asking how the meal was and a dessert menu was dumped in front of us. The majority of us still hungry, due to not finishing our awful meals, decided to order a dessert and we wished we had just stopped there. The desserts were dry and needed a mound of ice cream or custard to make them edible. All in all this is the worst experience we have had here after being frequent diners for a long time, we will not be rushing back anytime soon.

Me and a friend went for tea after work around 5.30. Food arrived quick. However, my friends vegetarian burger was awful, so much relish she had to scrape it off the burger. The tofu was like jelly, and the onion ring, over cooked. Not a pleasant experience for the money! Especially as we had travelled out of our way to visit.

We stumbled across this pub after driving round for a while trying to find somewhere that served food after 2pm and we were so glad when found it! The food was so amazing on the first visit that we booked to go back for Sunday lunch as well. Home cooked, excellent tasty food and great choice. The staff are really friendly and attentive and 3 course meal for under £20 is fab! Really enjoyed both of our visits

We visited at lunchtime on Friday and were very pleased we chose here, lovely quaint pub! We were met by a lovely polite host and taken to a lovely table just inside. Drinks were delivered very quickly and our host told us the specials of the day.We decided on the Peppers stuffed with savoury rice and the Brie. Both were very tasty and decent portion sizes. The homemade bread with the brie was an especially nice touch. We both opted for the 10oz sirloin with peppercorn sauce. Great cuts of meat and the sauce was superb, as someone who loves peppercorn sauce this is probably the best I've had over the years. Chunky chips and onion rings were also piping hot and cooked just right. With eyes bigger than bellies we opted for apple crumble with custard and an oreo cheesecake for afters. Portion sizes will not disappoint and we were both very happy with our choices. The cheesecake had oreos running through the middle of it and was really tasty.Service and food was really great and would recommend!

We called in on a motorcycle ride, the garden is spacious with good tables and 2 gazebos. We had the fish platter, this is expensive but we were sharing it between the 2 of us we also shared a portion of chips. The portion was huge even when we split it between the two of us the was more than enough each. The meal included mussels, king prawns, crab, smoked salmon and goujons that was like a mini haddock fillet. All was well presented and service was quick and friendly.

OK - let's start with the good points. There's a really nice, large beer garden with plenty of shade on a summer's day. Lovely place to sit and relax with a drink after a walk in the sun. The beer was fine too! Our afternoon pint in fine surroundings made us want to book an evening meal later in the same week. And so... cut to the evening meal. The staff are lovely. Young waiting staff absolutely rushed off their feet but always kind and polite. However, the food? Just completely mediocre. Our crab salad starter was not seasoned at all - the salad veg were fridge-cold and tasteless. The battered fish main course was raw and cold in the middle. Again, to their absolute credit , it was taken away and replaced without fuss and the cost was taken off the bill. As I said previously, service not a problem. But how hard can it be to get fish and chips right the first time?As for the batter, well... masses of the brown stuff! My blade of beef came with onion rings encased in the stuff - same with the fish. In a place that markets itself as a gastropub I want batter that's light, thin and crispy.Overall - just a mediocre dining experience despite all the good service and kind intentions.

Was really excited to eat here after popping by for drinks and seeing food come out that looked amazing! Starter was ok, prawn cocktail but without any sauce. Main of roast beef that was overdone, the veg seemed a frozen mix, the Yorkshire’s were good and looked homemade, the roast potatoes were an enigma - frozen or been under a lamp for a bit or was it just a choice of cooking fat that wasn’t to my liking? Don’t want to be unfair so hope was just the latter. Everything was a bit under seasoned and dessert likewise in that it lacked sugar for a crumble. Service was absolutely excellent from everyone. Had really wanted it to be great and maybe this was just an off day in parts

Subsequent visits have also proven to be pretty average. At our final visit this evening with our parents, one main needed reheating and all our deserts had to be rejected! I felt I had to write a review to compliment this young, but well motivated workforce on the way this pub is run.We had a meal tonight that was delivered amazingly quickly considering how busy it was and with good grace by attentive young workers, in marked contrast to what we have had in the past elsewhere. The food was fresh and well presented with a menu of reasonable choices, the pub was clean and welcoming, but quite often it is the way you are treated and the service you get especially the attitude if there is a problem, that sorts the men from the boys.In this respect I can heartily recommend this establishment, now of course I realise why it was so busy, even on a Monday evening, other people know it is a great place for a meal out.Well done.

I booked this pub for a meal on a Saturday evening, expecting nothing more than basic ‘pub food’. What a treat to discover genuinely home-made meals, the chunky chips cooked in beef dripping were fantastic, and the home-made pie was delicious. My companion had steak, cooked perfectly. Some of the items have sold out, and service was a little slow, but that is inevitable given that everything is cooked on the premises. I would definitely visit again, very friendly staff and the food was delicious.

Very disappointed with the meals and service that we received tonight. Came to Tealby for a week and read some good reviews so expected to eat at least three times in the week. First visit the fish was lovely the steak and kidney pudding was amazing. The ramblers platter was had by 2 people and there were no complaints there. However the chips were not cooked properly and lots were only half cooked. The service we received from Esme was brilliant. She was polite and attentive. Went for our second today and won’t go again. Brie and cranberry salad was the only meal that was enjoyed. 2 had steak and ale pie with new potatoes and peas and a gammon steak with chips. The new potatoes that were served with the pies were too hard to eat and again the chips were hard and under cooked. Not once did anyone ask if everything was ok with our meal and it felt that it was to much trouble to actually serve us. When a chap came to clear our plates not once were we asked if our meals were ok, I would of thought that as the same thing was left on both plates it would of been mentioned! When we finally got attention of the girl waitress we asked for the bill, we heard her ask and the chap who cleared our plates said he wasn’t her slave. She then asked Ashley who then made out our bill and then asked if everything was ok!!!!!Too late to actually do anything about it.Apology given and said he would speak to the people concerned, didn’t help change my opinion that things would improve.

Decided to visit this place on the second night of our family holiday as it was the highest rated on TripAdvisor in the area. After multiple attempts to phone and book a table either ending up with no answer or an engaged line, I managed to message the pub via Google and secure a booking there. Turned up and waited a while to be seated, and were ignored by multiple members of staff. Ordered two mains and a kids sausage, chips and beans. We asked if the kids meal came included with a dessert as the price was extremely high (£7.95). The lovely waitress said she thought it did which made the price more bearable. Food arrived very quick and the service was great, no complaints there. The meals themselves were nice but no where near the level at which this place is rated. Pretty standard pub food and the adult meal prices are very reasonable. Ordered our daughter two scoops of ice cream for dessert (nothing for us). Upon getting the bill, we were surprised to see the ice cream was additional (£1.90 per scoop, itemised on the bill). We queried this at the bar as we went to pay and were told the dessert was not included in the kids meal price. The lovely waitress who served us spoke up and said she told us she thought it was and the dessert was reduced from the bill. Upon seeing the kids menu again, it is intended to be misleading in it's wording but it is clear that a dessert isn't included. Neither is a drink, so at a cost of £7.95, it is by far one of the most highly priced kids meals I have ever come across. The portion our daughter received wasn't even very big. Overall, we paid £40 (reduced from £44 after the dessert was waived) for two cokes, an orange squash, kids sausage, chips and beans, fish and chips and pie and chips. Definitely not worth it for the quality of food we received and miles away from our expectations due to the positive reviews this place has.

We were walking around Tealby and had heard of The Kings Head, so decided to call in. We sat outside, lots of people there enjoying their food and drinks. We were just having drinks, as having a meal at night. The food was well presented and looked really good - all the people who were eating and that was most of them, were saying how good the food was. It was a bit of a wait to get served at the bar, but it was a busy and very hot day. I've given it full marks as I think The Kings Head deserved it. If there is ever an issue with food that we have ordered, I would always talk to the server or the manager - I have never put a 1 star... it can destroy the reputation of a business. Always a bit suspect when someone has only ever written one review and it is a one star

We recently visited for an early dinner and kept it simple, a few drinks and a meal. We did not eat here before but had heard good stories. It appeared busy this sunny afternoon. We were welcomed friendly and led to our table (booked). We were handed over the menu and the dishes appeared nice, but I immediately noticed a clear price difference between meat and non-meat. I assumed it should be for the quality (Filet Steak). So we ordered a few dishes, Fish & Chips, Gammon, Hunters Chicken and 2 Fillet Steaks. Everything but the Fillet Steaks appears of good quality. The Fillet steak clearly was not a 'filet' as expected. It was very well prepared, but it contained fat, through it and around. Not a nice 'clean' piece of meat. It looked and tasted more like an entrecote. The onion rings were fried to long, as no onion was remaining, just a crusty ring.My compliment for the fries, this were nice. The desserts as well.I found the fries kind of expensive, though.I expected a fine quality, seeing the reword of 2020 and the prices. This entrecote costed £26.The staff was friendly.

Sat under the large gazebo, great as it was very sunny and hot. The three staff we saw were very busy and service was a little slow in parts, which gave us more time to chat and make room for the deserts. The choice and quality was excellent. Chicken curry and stilton burgers. Chunky, rustic look to the meals and didn’t scrimp on the portions. The chocolate orange cheesecake got a double thumbs up from the teenager and the mango and apple crumble was spot on with neither the crumble nor custard over sweetened. Will definitely visit agin when back in the area. Thank you to all the team

Came here last year and loved it so much we decided to return. A mistake, I had 3 drinks tipped over me and my food by the waitress, I was soaked, she apologised and it was an accident but it ruined our visit. I had to ask for the food to be replaced, I was just offered some more peas, I pointed out the drink was all over my food at which point they did offer to replace, I should not have had to ask. We waited ages for our initial drinks to come. When they did come my drink, which I thought was Strongbow apple cider was dark fruits, they offered to replace but we had already waited ages. Waitress did not seem to know what cider or lager they had on draft or what wines they had, a drinks menu would’ve been a good option. We were told we would get a round on the house, because of the drink incident but when the bill came we had been charged for them plus an extra meal (almost £23 overcharge). We asked for the dessert menu but this never materialised. It wasn’t particularly busy so couldn’t really understand what the holdup was. The food was nice but not worth the repeat visit - shame so much has changed since our last visit in October 2020.

Went for Sunday Lunch, busy for the time we wanted - so we were asked if we would accept the 'Backbar' - cant be that bad right? 3 courses selected, the soup and main course were good, although the vegetables provided were raw and the roast potato (yes only one) was awful and left to be returned to the kitchen with the veg. The Eton Mess for dessert was sour, unappetising and looked and tasted rather a mess, with not a strawberry in sight. I could have put up with most things but what really irritated me was the lack of service-I am a patient chap, but it came to the point that I had to go to the bar and ask for the main plates to be cleared . I t appeared that if you are in the 'backbar' you are forgotten about. So if you are asked to accept the 'backbar' DON'T!!!!!. Rather go some where else or don't go at all. The one way system uses one door with a narrow passageway for entry and exit and therefore is not a one way system.

Excellent covid management, one way system, hand sanitisers and tables well spaced, staff wearing face masks and provided table service from a screened bar. However, beers were awful, tasted like pipes weren’t clean as had beers from different pumps, soft drinks flat and whilst the service was very swift and efficient, the food was overpriced and average at best. £13 for a greasy salad with cold bacon and £4.80 for a grim pint in freezing cold and deadly surroundings wasn’t what we expected. Staff asked if all was ok, when we fed back it wasn’t well received and no interest was taken at all. Don’t ask if you don’t want to know! Drove some distance on a recommendation, wasn’t worth the trip and wouldn’t go back again.

I have just had a lovely lunch with my son at this charming country pub. My son had a rump steak cooked exactly how he ordered (medium rare). My homemade steak pie was great with a lovely crispy case which was packed with lean tender steak and homemade chips on the side.2 empty plates later he opted for the chocolate brownies and ice cream. A lovely thick warm brownie soon disappeared with the ice cream.Friendly efficient staff and the food make this somewhere to visit for a lovely meal in beautiful surroundings.

Despite a walk along the Viking Way, I wasn't feeling particularly hungry when I got to Tealby, and I was tempted to have the soup. What an error that would have been: I would have missed out on the best pie I've ever eaten. The pastry was firm enough to hold it together without the need for a pie-dish, crusty enough to have a pleasant crunch to it, and yet crumbly enough to melt in the mouth; the steak was substantial yet tender; and the sauce was pungent and flavourful without being too rich. The pub is in the heart of a lovely village, with plenty of space in the beer garden, and the prices are reasonable. After a couple of pints, I could quite happily have stayed there for ever.

We Went today by chance, the weather was on our side because I knew we wouldn't be able to get a table inside,we were fortunate to find a table in the garden. We sat outside and the ambience was just perfect as was the meal and the service! I know how difficult the 'Eat Out scheme' has been for the catering/restaurant/public houses. The kings Head just shines and proves what an amazing place it is. I've had a perfect afternoon in a perfect place. Thank you everyone and thank you as always Thomas and staff.

I have visited The King's Head at Tealby twice over the last two weeks to partake of the government scheme. I was pleasantly surprised by the setting of this pub as it is gorgeous. We had a table inside on the first visit and felt very safe and well cared for. They are well aware of the social distancing rules and abide by them. The food was delicious and there is a good variety of good pub food. We sat at a table outside on the second visit and was equally impressed. We will definitely be visiting again.

We had a lovely meal here, the food was excellent. However, the August discount applied to the bill was incorrect. We were given £5 discount each on a bill of £80. We queried this and was told that was the discount offered. Unfortunately you were wrong! No doubt you will be claiming all of the discount, so that makes me think, are you trying to deliberately short change customers, in order to boost profits? I think you need to re-read the Governments’s guidelines on this, so other customers don’t miss out.

Booked a table for 4 and was allowed to bring our dog in the tap side, the food was very nice we had 2 burger meals, rump steak and the fish platter. The only criticism was service was a little slow as we had the ask a few times for the desert menu and the ketchup etc, some of the locals didn’t seem to be keeping to the one way system which was annoying as I bumped into someone coming out of the ladies toilet. Would recommend the food as it was excellent and above standard for pub grub

Those having beef full of gristle, turkey cold, fish over cooked and smothered with a sauce to disguise it. . 3. Any comments were met with a shrug by disinterested staff 4. The upstairs is decorated with pictures of mod bands and the obligatorily blue and red circles on the ceiling. The bar has a large mirror which gives the illusion of a larger space. We were seated and waited on by 2 very attentive servers. Drinks water for the table everything. The tables were already set and the place had a nice feel. Have had 3 lunches here in the past, all have been excellent. Today’s was served just warm. A “roast chicken dinner with all the trimmings” sounded good, but was just a chicken breast, a ball of stuffing, a small piece of roast potato, a bit of mashed potato, a cold Yorkshire pudding and a bowl of veg which were mainly carrots.Others had roast pork, beef etc all similar temperature and with same potato etc. They were very busy, maybe just over stretched themselves today. Pudding was fine. Shared our experience with the bar man when we left, he apologised but didn’t seem to know why the food was not as good as usual. Service was good.

First of all we arrived Monday lunchtime and it was a lovely bright day, we were excited to eat here as we had heard some great things. My Mum was a little cold so we decided to eat inside and walked into an empty restaurant area only to be told the tables were all reserved (it was 12.20pm). OK... so we were then shuffled into a back room which i presume is an overflow area. This area is dark, damp and full of flies. Anyway that isn't the worst of it. I decided to order the 10oz Ribeye steak, at £23 you are expecting this to be a magnificent meal, forget it. The steak came out and it could have been no more than 6oz at best, it was a terrible cut of meat as well. My mum commented that maybe it was the leftover steak from the weekend, way way below what you would expect at any pub, never mind one with such a good reputation.

Went for lunch yesterday 6/6 with my wife and her friend. The ladies had the roast beef which they said was really nice. I drew the short straw and had the poached haddock. Yes , it was very tasty and that is where it ends. The portion was the smallest I have ever seen It looked like half a fillet cut in half again. It reminded me of a dish in a 5* hotel not in a village pub. For what was being charged for it a hell of a profit was being made.

2 Brie, 1 mushroom fricasee, 1 potted pork for starters - all delicious. 2 steaks well cooked, chips good but way over the top portion size with onion rings, brioche and butter on the side. King prawn linguine was tasty but with too much sauce made it too rich. Please please please can you get the bar to serve a decent vodka tonic in a decent glass with ice and lemon or lime . Not acceptable to serve it in a boring small straight glass with no ice or lemon - not the first time this has happened during current restrictions so don't want to get up and get this corrected. Treat it like trendy gin!!!Staff need to make sure masks are over their noses.

This is exactly what you'd hope for from a traditional village pub, good beer, great food and friendly service. From the moment we arrived we were made to feel welcome to the moment we left (having probably slightly outstayed our welcome by chatting away with near empty glasses) at no point did we feel rushed, and will certainly be returning. The menu is varied offering fantastic value for money. As a table of four, we had four different mains, and three different deserts and all left happy. A job well done.
