Small but loads to see, family friendly and great thing to do when it is raining

One of the Edinburgh's must visit places of all time. Exquisite details showcasing history, times with advanced touch. Each and every figurine is impressive enough to drop your jaw. Lots of things to learn from. Rare to real animals are presented..

Very interesting museum! From what I can see, it is great for kids. I loved how there were a lot of interactive portions, even if I didn’t use them, it was nice. A wide variety of subjects in one place, which is nice. The views from the balcony are amazing!

Amazing and immense museum that hosts an array of exhibitions related to science, technology, fauna and much more. It's wonderful to explore its many rooms and marvel at how complex and beautiful our world is. Admission is free and it's perfect for adults and children alike. A must when in Edinburgh!

Been a few times now and the place is so vast that I've yet to see all of it! Beautiful architecture as well and it's free. I would avoid going during weekends and school holidays as it gets quite busy.

This must be my new favourite museum. It's free and it has a little bit of everything. It's enjoyable both if you want to spend your entire day there to read everything carefully and learn a bunch of new things, but also if you only have a few hours and want to look at all the pretty and interesting things quickly.

Excellent museum! We were enchanted by so many curiosities. There is a cafe on the 3rd floor with a delicious slice of chocolate cake. No need to pay.

Free entry, good for taking the kids

The museum and the structure are really amazing but if you’re planing on seeing everything than it will take some time because there are many different rooms on different floors and after a while you might get tired. Apart from that everything was great and it was definitely a nice morning at the museum.

Beautiful museum, completely free and very well located

There is so much to see. You definitely need a couple of hrs to go round ,plenty accessible Toliets and areas to have pack lunch as well as a cafe and restaurant. It's free entry to the museum, but there are lots of ways to leave small donations to support the museum.

Great muesum with free entry. You could spend the whole day in here. It is great for solo trips, trips with friends or a family day out. After hour events are very well organised and planned. Would recommend the ceilidh.

Visited for the science festival today in the early quiet time. My boys ages 16 and 8 had a great time. This is a brilliant venue and excellent museum to visit, you can be entertained in here for hours.

Plan your visit (or split it into more days), or be ready to spend a full day in here and still miss some parts: the place is very big.

Save yourself travelling to London - this museum has steam train and rockets, like the Science Museum, London; Fashion display like the V&A; and natural history .. .just like the Natural History Museum. I only spent one and a half hours here. . and found myself taking a video of Dolly The Sheep. Brilliant place to take kids or adults, rain or shine.

This museum is an excellent way to spend some of your time in Edinburgh. There is so much to see, one visit is not enough! The museum caters well for children, in terms of facilities and things to keep them occupied. We particularly love the natural history rooms, the fashion displays, and the section on science and technology. The cafes are not cheap but the food is good, I can recommend the scones. You can also take your own food. The gift shop is expensive but well stocked if you want a memento of your visit. And it is free to visit with donations welcomed but not mandatory. Overall, I would highly recommend a visit.

What a fantastic museum. You can spend hours inside, learning about history, cultures, animals, transport and so on. There is so much to see and a lot of activities for the little ones. On street parking is available but very expensive. Entrance is free which is amazing. A must if you are visiting Edinburgh. Family friendly. Restroom and Restaurant available on site.

A museum full of different rooms and each one of them different that transport you throughout history and different parts of the world, the building itself is beautiful, it is very worth the joy of visiting it on your trip to Edinburgh, on top of that it is free entrance.

Nice building that contains very curious and beautiful exhibitions of all kinds, it is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and it is free. Highly recommended even with children where they have many activities to do

Spectacular and especially recommended for children and restless minds. Don't expect paintings or works of art, but technology, its evolution, that you can touch and experience. All in a beautiful building.

The best place for adults and kids

Free admission. Large museum with several collections, very eclectic. It has 7 floors and a roof terrace with a view of the city. Lots of activities for kids, a good place for rainy weather but lots of people.

So much to see with lots for people with different interests. We went for the natural history. Didn't have time for the Scottish history because we wanted to see the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibit. I would've loved to go back the next day for different sections instead of wasting time and money on Edi Castle.

Could of spent loads longer in there as we've missed out loads of exhibitions. Will definitely be back to see more

A place of wonder!! So many interesting and astonishing exhibits. Definitely something for everyone to enjoy, the range of exhibits is huge and well presented.

Impressive and Informative, Free. An amazing experience at this museum which brings the right mix of history and nature. Some specimens well preserved and displayed along with the history of kings to the world wars, well explained. It needs atleast 3-4 hours to cover it well if not all. Was there during the weekdays with continuous rains, still the place was so crowded. Overall a must visit spot at Edinburgh

This place is incredible! It's absolutely huge so you'd probably need a couple of days to go through it all. Everyone will find their own, and the entry is free!

A fantastic exhibition, very versatile and also exciting for children, as it contains a lot of interactive elements and can be easily accessed even without knowledge of English. And all of this without paying an entrance fee! There is the £5 donation, which is requested (but optional), a welcome gesture.

Always a wonderful learning experience in the museum. There is something of interest for everyone regardless of age. You can spend a lot of time with the visit. Take a drink and a little snack. There is a cafe and a gift shop.

We didn’t have time to see the whole museum, but what we did see was great. Our 7-year old loved it. Great for a rainy day to keep the kids (and parents) amused.

This amazing museum is still free to enter though obviously a donation is recommended. Map provided, plenty of helpful staff, picnic stops where you can eat your own food as well as at leadt 3 cafés /restaurants. Loads to see and do for kids and adults. A must for Edinburgh IMO.

It is an excellent museum that is not generally on the visit list of tourists who travel to Edinburgh. I saw the part corresponding to the history of Scotland and the Science and Nature Collections, but there is clothing and many more It is free and very comfortable to explore. Plus the original building is beautiful inside!

This is a truly amazing place. It's HUGE, so big, you could happily spend two days here and still not see everything. It's family friendly, prams and wheelchairs can access. There are lifts for those with mobility issues and plenty of stairs for those who don't. There are lots of interactive consoles for both adult and children. Whether you're into the natural world, history, technology, the arts or space there's something here for you. It has a small cafe on an upper floor and an area on the ground floor for those who've brought a packed lunch. One thing I would say is a possible lack of toilets. When I was there, it was a holiday, very wet outside and the place was heaving with folks. Queues for the loos were significant. That aside, it's still an absolute must see. Entry is free although you're encouraged to leave a donation. Some exhibits may require payment for aticket such as the Wildlife Photographer of the year 2024, which I thoroughly recommend going to.

Visited on a very busy wet school holiday. Plenty to see and loads of space.

This is a museum where you can spend hours and hours inside, the multitude of rooms it has will transport you through the history of the world. Its entrance is free and there are lockers to leave your suitcases, it also has a cafeteria although being quite central you will have no problems taking a break for lunch.

Can't get disabled parking, cars beeping, motorists swearing if you slow down to turn. Absolute nightmare not worth the grief. People are so rude. Only nice people were the tourists. Absolute shambles. Parking permits only? Where does it tell you that before you come to Edinburgh? Shameful!

It is worth it! Reserve at least 2 hours for this tour.

Such a great museum! It's free to visit and you will definitely need a few hours to see everything! It's set in a beautiful building on a few floors.There are two entrances, two gift shops and a cafe. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The exhibitions are very diverse - you can see and learn a lot about Scottish history, science, and natural history. You can see different artefacts, learn about Scotish history, explore rooms with monerals and animals, play interactive games, and there is something for everyone. Great place for kids and adults.

A great day out! Took my young son here and he had a grand time. Exhibits are suitable for both children and adults, and cover a huge range of areas, from animals, science & technology to History, to art, design and fashion. Lots of interactive things for wee ones to enjoy and good cafe, toilets and general accessibility for people with kids or who are less mobile.

This is one of the best museums that I have visited lately that incorporates history, culture, arts, fashion and biology! And the best part? It’s completely free! My 16-year-old son and I split our visit into two separate afternoons because we didn’t have enough time to see and experience the entire place in just one day. Some locals that we met at the airport in Edinburgh had recommended that we visit. I am so thankful that we did. This is a great place for ages 8 to 88, and the café serves delicious food, as well!

Great place. But a bit of a all in one, which was not great. In general Good exhibition though. Early man, enviorment and king exhibition which where more concentrated were better than the rest.

This place is huge - it has 4 floors full of interesting things! A wide mixture of things can be found here, including deep sea critters to ancient Gods. It's definitely worth a visit, but make sure you plan a good day's worth out as there is so much to see. It also has fun interactive elements for people of all ages.

Very nice, interesting museum. Admission is free, but you have to pay for changing special exhibitions - very fair!

After the Covid hiatus great to get back inside the museum again. I was amazed how much variety and sheer content there was. Nice cafe located at level 3 too. But lifts are too small to cope with the buggy traffic when the museum is busy.

I've been there hundreds of times, and I love it every time. It's so easy to get lost and just have fun wandering around, and you can easily make a whole day out of it!

Huge place with so much to see. Lots of interactive exhibits to keep the kids entertained too. Definitely worth getting to the roof terrace if the weather is good. The views are amazing. Big queues for the restaurant.
