Josephs Fish Bar and Cafe in Carmarthenshire

Great place, was recommended in the visitors book at our Airbnb, very friendly welcoming place, the two lads serving were gorgeous in every way. We felt so welcome. The food was excellent, fish was cooked fresh so expect a little wait but it's well worth it. Clean, relaxed and friendly atmosphere, very reasonable price, we come from Oxfordshire so much cheaper than we would ever pay and expect quality. Dog friendly Which ment the friendly locals all paid us attention. Can not fault the guys, the bonus being how charming they are.

Thought we would try Joseph's! Was not dissapointed,really lovely fish and chips! Good price too! As fish was beautiful!

This fish and chip shop has gone right downhill. Ridiculously expensive and the food is of poor quality. If you're lucky you may even get what you've asked for but we didn't. Asked for gravy and got curry, absolutely terrible. The fish has gradually got smaller and smaller while the price rises, tonight we paid £6.30 for a large fish and it was pathetically small. Rissoles which were probably vegetarian, no evidence of meat at all. We won't be back.

We went in for fish and chips. It was interesting to watch the three of them processing the orders. They've really got it sorted. The fish and chips were good too. A cod each and a large chips between us was enough - in a good way.

Called into Joseph's for Rissole & Chips along with a pie and chips. Ram jam full in there. However once again well worth the wait, then park up down the harbour and see the splendid view. Certainly recommend, and certainly will call again

Excellent quality food, lovely friendly service and VERY generous portions! We thoroughly enjoyed our fish & chips from Joseph’s. All fish is cooked to order so crispy batter and piping hot. We ordered 3 large portions of chips for 5 adults and 3 children and had the best part of a whole portion leftover! It is cash only but there’s a cash point practically next door at the co-op

AWFUL FOOD!!!! The sausage was cremated! The fish, well there was nothing there but batter! The chips had clearly been sat under the hot lamp for ages! If you want proper fish and chips…best go to Atlantis round the corner where they cook to order and the portions are decent!

The food was delicious and was decent portion sizes. However, it was very busy so would recommend setting off a bit early or ordering over the phone beforehand. Also it is cash only but there’s a cash machine nearby to grab some out so not a problem.

My husband and I stopped off for some lunchtime chips - they were really tasty, hot, fresh and had a lovely flavour. The lady who served us was really friendly and chatty. Would definitely stop by again if ever in the area.

Went here today. I had a dispute about the price which was quickly resolved. My calculator update is on the frits, but the staff member (and this is the one member I will speak of here) went through it with me, and shortly after I accepted the cost. But - here we go: as a customer entering the place, there was no clear indication where to queue, I had to apply guess work but ended up having another customer telling me of where it begins. The place is small and crammed, so as cutomers were coming in through the doors, I didn't want to be in the way, so I went to the other end where they decided my order was to be taken. This 'staff member', shouted something to me in terms of where I should position myself, which I didn't quite get, and in that time I asked her something, and she looked at the wall obviously disgusted with me and huffed and ignored me completely. This really ticked me off. Then when it came to the pricing and I was trying to fathom the expense that has increased since its take over - we're talking near £10 for a large fish and chips, I went through my calculation with her and the calculation appeared to be right at the time, but as I showed her how I was administering the entry of the price into it, only for her to start gesturing at random customers that her 'head is exploding' due to my query. And she was looking at these strangers like I was the one being diificult, but when she made sure that she was indeed correct, I accepted it in my head, but what I wasn't accepting was her attitude. she was looking at me like I just spat at her, and I could tell that she really hated me, and really had it in as I queried prices. I was picking up food for other people who were paying, I wanted everything to be correct. She had this attitude that everyone is at fault no matter what, and she is never the wrong one (maybe not in this case I agree), but I guarentee you, she was mouthing off at everyone about me after I left, as she was blatently trying to take the p*ss out of me using the other customers as her audience. When I first looked up from the workings from her note pad, I wanted to apologise and explain to her my reasons for querying, but when I saw the way she was looking at me and liked using customers to her advantage to gesture and ridiculing me at every possible opportunity, I just really just wanted to leave, and never go back. I have never been treated this badly before, this person just stared at me like a dog that was about to bite me. I bet she will be telling this story about me and how about she was right about the pricing as an amusing annecdote to her friends and family for ther next 20 years or so. The thing is (and just like her customers, no one will find it ammusing, just unprofessional). What has happened to this place? Look out for this one woman - short, brown-haired in her 50s say. Another thing I noticed in my same visit, there was a couple who walked in, having a bit of a dispute about keys, and as she was packing food, she was glaring at the man in the relationship like he was in the wrong, and obviously looking for him to react to her staring. She had a frown on her like she wanted to kill. This particular staff member, she's a typically, sexist, angry, sadistic bully, but sadly, nothing original, who has got nothing better to do. I felt so unwelcome, uninvited, like I disturbed her wasps nest or something. The woman is vile and obviously feels that people need her more than she needs them, but looking here at the reviews, I am obviously not the only one that has undergone such an unfortunate experience! She really needs to sort it out!! I am not letting her get away with how she treated me in front of others and neither should anyone else. Lucky I am thick skinned enough when it comes to being in the presence of such idiots, but I didn't tell her what I really thought of her as there were kids around, and she already laid the groundwork which enabled people to gain that unbecoming insight in to her. Sickening!

It’s a sorry truth that I’ve never had the opportunity to try Rissoles, but I’ve now had the chance, and they’re smashing. Also, the large cod we had was also glorious, batter was crunchy and tasted fab. The chips were well cooked, lots of big’uns and also some crunchy little ones too. No idea what previous reviewers found to be a problem with the service - smiles and politeness all round. Happy family with full tummies.

Used to serve fabulous fish & chips but last 3 or 4 visits the food has been consistently poor. Seems to have gone downhill the past year or so. Chips pale, soggy & greasy. Same with fish, very oily & sickly.

The food was lovely but the person serving was very rude to a customer, calling him names because he coughed into his mask. I do think she should have been more polite and she should also be wearing a mask or visor when serving food

Health hygiene needs to be addressed here called here on 22/11/19 at around 12 noon staff eating food while preparing food and serving food I am sure if you look at your c c TV you see why neither of the staff washed there hands in between. Sorry will not call here again.

Don't go anywhere else as this is the best. Generous portions, fish cooked to order, free sausages for the dog when there are some left over. There will be queues on the weekend and there is a reason for that as it is so good. Highly recommended.

On August 31st 2019 Joseph's supplied 86 superb portions of fish and chips which were served to people attending a fundraiser at the clubhouse at the Shoreline caravan park . They were absolutely delicious and red hot . Ainsley also supplied ( free of charge ) a pot of mushy peas which were enjoyed by many . The high standard of the food was a highlight of the night . A big thank you to Ainsley and her team , I certainly can recommend the service and the food . There was nothing I disliked . If I organised another event my first call would be to Joseph's .

This place was recommended to us but from personal experience I wouldn't go again. The chips was dry and tasteless and the fish was grey and the batter was bland. Overall very disappointing not worth the money.

Large fish, small fish, large chips. A feast for two. Fish is always freshly prepared and perfectly cooked. A large chips is definitely enough for 2 people. Food is pipping hot. Staff are friendly and chatty. Prefect food for eating down by the nearby harbour.

The best chips I have had in a long time, will definitely come again. I had a kids chips which was fine for me and only £1.40.

I've been coming here for a while on a weekly basis. The staff are always busy no matter what time of day it is and for good reason.

Our search for a pub lunch in Burry Port had not gone well. The Cornish Arms was closed (for good? who knows - there were no signs up); the Pembrey Inn was closed (its weekday opening times not displayed - the telly was on though); and the Ship Aground was playing Diana Ross too loud. So we decided to cut our losses and go for fish and chips. And I'm so glad we did. The staff were friendly and welcoming, the prices were absurdly reasonable, and the fish and chips were as good as one could hope for. Indeed, my cod was perfect - wonderfully fresh in its light crispy batter. It was with difficulty that the staff could be persuaded to accept a tip. Burry Port is very lucky to have them.

Growing up in the area Joseph’s was always been a must, haven’t been there since moving a little away but today had time to kill, so all the family sat in the cafe seating area. The staff were extremely pleasant and friendly and everything cooked fresh, they had your usual fish, chips and rissoles but the cheese and onion rissoles were to die for. Deffo be there

Been coming to Joseph’s for many, many years and have always had superb service in the cafe and takeaway food ( batter is the best I have ever had anywhere and chips best in Burry Port) Such a surprise earlier today when we picked up food for all the family, got them home and the chips were not cooked as well as they usually are and the pies had to be heated as were cold ( we don’t live far from Joseph’s. My only thought is perhaps the fryer was playing up or we were very unlucky time wise as this is really a one off for us from here. See you agin soon, one poor experience won’t put us off coming and the dogs had all the wasted chips and pies etc so were very happy hounds

ended up in Burry Port, with a treat of Rissole & Chips to take away and eat on a bench....bloody seagulls!! Throughly enjoyed what we purchased and certainly would recommend, we waited a while, but the treat was worth it.

Always call here when I want a takeaway chip meal, probably the best in the area, fish is always cooked fresh to order,sit down cafe is also available above the chip shop.

So my partner and I visited the restaurant on bank holiday Monday. We had a fantastic meal each. the staff were super friendly, the place was spotless and the food was excellent. We can't recommend this place any higher if we tried. Even at its busiest time with the queues out the door, no1 was left waiting too long. Thank you Ainsley and the team for a great experience

By far, the worst chip shop i have ever been to. Polish staff member extremely rude along with another woman late 50's. Food was cold, soggy and disgusting. Stay far away from this so called restaurant. Wouldn't get my dogs food from there.

As Laurians seemed to be closing up early on a Saturday night (7:41pm!), thought I'd try Josephs. Got tasty chips and a steak and kidney pie. Will try fish the next time as that is the difficult one it seems at most F+C places. One thing surprised me; server was wearing plastic gloves but was still handling till money. Seemed somewhat illogical. There were 3 behind the counter - One to deal with money please one to handle food - Thank you!....

Decided to try again and this time not only was the food awful, but the Polish staff member was rude. I had cold chips and charcoal chicken. Surely not difficult to get it right. I returned the food as it was inedible.

Visiting my son and his partner who were holidaying, and based at Llanelli., they took us out for the day. We had explored Burry Port, the docks and small town, and as it was an absolutely beautiful late summer's day, we decided to have fish n'chips and eat them outside.

I had read how good Joseph's was and wasn't disappointed. It was quite busy on Monday evening but they move along quickly. I had steak and kidney pie which was the best I've ever had, really full of meat. Loads of chips and mushy peas. My wife didn't have anything so I went again on Thursday.

Joseph's is a chip shop with a cafe which is very popular with the locals and visitors,the food is always of a good standard but most of all it tastes good,I can highly recommend their fish and chips which are REALLY tasty.

Ordered 2 medium cod and chips with curry sauce here on Saturday evening while on a weekend break. It was freezing with a bitterly cold wind so we ate the meal in the car overlooking the harbour as it started to snow in the fading light. It was delicious, just the right size portion, and yummy sauce.

By far the best fish and chips in the area. Great service and good food. Nothing better than getting a tray of chips and going for a walk down to the lighthouse.

Ordered fish and chips to take away and watched as they were freshly cooked for us. Our portions were plentiful and delicious. Beautifully cooked and not at all greasy. Definitely will be calling again.

Travelled from Carmarthen on the train for chippy lunch in Burry Port, we called at Joseph’s, our first visit since it re opened and we weren’t disappointed. The fish cooked to perfection as were the chips. Customer service was totally awesome, nothing was too much trouble. We sat upstairs to eat and the view was as outstanding as the food.

Waited for fish to be cooked,think because we was waiting she did not leave in long enough. when back and put on plate it was soggy and oily and a very thin bit of fish in all the batter. Chips nice though.

I am not sure what a proper seafront chippy is but this should define the term. Not too busy when we arrived but got very busy quite quickly. Fish and chips for me and the good lady were freshly cooked and very nice, we didn't use the cafe as we had the mutt with us and he was soaking wet. There was a tray of sausages on the counter for dogs so he left happy too.

I wanted to surprise my wife and get some fish and chips from the newly reopened Josephs, my problem was access, I couldn't get in as the attempt at ramps was (if it wasn't a rebuild) laughable, I couldn't get my wheelchair through the door. I asked a customer who was inside if they could ask how I could get in.........I couldn't so the woman behind the counter shouted "what do you want" I replied "to get out of the rain and order some fish and chips" a few minutes passed and another customer brought me my food and told me how much it was, I gave him the money and he got me change. The fish was lovely the chips were average, the experience was hard to swallow. Fast forward a few weeks and myself and my wife were out and fancied fish and chips again so this time my wife went in (I wasn't going through that again) when she went in there was a man infront of her so she stood behind him, only to be joined by another lady behind her, the woman behind the counter shouts (in a rather gruff voice) "can you lot queue over here" pointing at the other end of the counter, in my wifes words she felt like a naughty schoolgirl. The food at Josephs is above average but the customer service decidedly below par. Would I go there again? I don't think so.

It was a while since we had had fish and chips so we were really looking forward to having some .We had been to this fish shop prior to the fire and so we were really pleased it had been refurbished and was frying again❗The menu had a good selection of fish ,pies rissoles ,cheesy chips ,chip butties and baked potatoes.They also serve breakfasts too as they have a small seated area at the back you can choose to eat in if you wish. We had breaded plaice and medium cod with regular chips they were freshly cooked and thoroughly delicious .The chip portions were very generous so if you have a limited capacity you can order a kids portion. We will definitely go back there again on our next visit to the area and recommend you try it too you won't regret it ‼

Visited this chip shop for the first time recently (was unaware of it before) and had some very good fish & chips, best I have had in Burry Port. What more can I say? We'll be back!

Always go to Josephs Fish and Chips Bar for chips as it's the best in Burry Port, Carmarthenshire, Wales and I could even say in the world. The chips are proper chippy style and the fish is lovely. The Popcorn chicken is the best and if your lucky you may get an extra one or two. If your getting big orders then go before you want it and give in and they will really appreciate it. Staff are very friendly and helpful. Prices are average and fair.

These chips were absolutely amazing. They were crispy on the outside and so fluffy in the middle they practically melted in your mouth!

Joseph's Fish Bat was destroyed by an accidental Fire, but has now re-opened. The premises has been completely refurbished and is bright, clean and airy. The upstairs has been transformed with picture windows which provide a good view of the town centre floral displays and the harbour. This upstairs facility will open shortly, providing customers with a clean and comfortable facility, enhanced by the view.

Absolutely fantastic service, friendly staff and delicious food. Prepared food for 30 children and 5 adults during our school trip, nothing too much trouble. Great value for money, thanks girls

My first stop after driving from London - brilliant fish & chips!! Crispy batter - good sized and cooked chips. Friendly staff and spotless premises.

I called in to this shop on July 1st which was carnival day in Burry Port. It was also opening day after the fire that devastated the family. Both owner were working as well as other family members helping out and at least another 4 members of staff. People were queuing all around the shop!(it had obviously been sorely missed for 7 months!). Someone had bought the owner a pint of beer from the Cornish which had caused everyone a lot of amusement! The atmosphere was great in the shop as everyone was so happy to be back in business! My food, popcorn chicken and chips was beautiful! and I actually didn't wait too long considering the size of the queue. The only bad point I can say is the really badly behaved children who were in front of me. But that's not the fault of the shop! And after reading Jane's(above comments) I'm guessing they were hers! Overall a great experience!

Well found my self travelling thro and after looking on trip advisor for some were to eat see your reviews looked quite good thought I would try and see food was ok but the young girl with dark hair was more intrested in her phone than serving customers and when I asked to add something to my order she rolled her eyes at the request thinking I dint see what she was doing food was good customer service not so good

Great service and great food. I ordered a child's portion of chips as I find this is more than enough for me. They were fine with this (a rarity as some places do not like this). I will definitely call here again.

Having arranged a charity fish supper evening, couldn't fault the support and service received from Josephs Fish Bar. Ordered around 90 meals which were superbly packed and ready for collection as promised. Within around 10 minutes all meals were served to the waiting public still hot and very tasty. No complaints only compliments received about the food and the evening in general. Thank you to Ainsley and the staff at Josephs Fish Bar for all their hard work

Having just been at a local pub, I asked the barman what time Barrie's Fish and Chip Shop across the road opened. To which he replied, "Dunno as it's been shut for over a year". Not a useful response nor what I was expecting. Mind you I was even more shocked just now to read reviews on Barrie's Chippie that he is still open but he himself had retired. Oh well, this catalogue of conversation led us to try Joseph's Fish Bar and Cafe, which my half-asleep barman assured me was "the best chippie in town!".The girl serving was very welcoming and friendly but not one for idle chitchat. I ordered 2 small cod, a large chips and small mushy peas. I asked her to ensure that the chips were cooked a bit longer as we like crispy chips and have recently been released by the plague of the new potato that do not fry that well.This she attempted to do but the result was less than crisp and little more than anaemic. The fish was nice and white, flakey and the batter fairly crisp but I have had better. While we were waiting for our order, my wife chatted to a local old boy. who reflects the people of this place. They are all warm, friendly and more than happy to spend a little of their day with you. I found myself perusing the sweetie offerings on the counter on sale for 50p each. I was a bit taken aback to read on the side of the Crunchie Bar "Multipack Bar - Not For Resale". Let us hope that the local Trading Standards Officer doesn't read Trip Advisor......

Read reviews saying how good they were but when I asked for a pea fritter from their menu I was told they couldn't do them as the peas were too fresh!!! Needless to say I took my custom elsewhere....

We were camped at Pembrey Country Park as a group of 5 families, (19 of us in total), & the fish & chip, sausage & chip suppers are a ritual part of our weekend. Sophie & the staff at "Josephs" couldn't have been more helpful or obliging with our "Order x19" & we were "happy well fed campers," so for us a flawless experience once again. Lovely people, excellent value & great service - we'll be back! Go on treat yourself.....

I ordered for six families and then collected an hour later. The staff in the Fish Bar were so helpful and made ordering and collecting so much a real treat. The food was excellent and I am now a convertee to Rissoles as long as they taste this good! Thanks for a lovely meal and we will definitely visit again

Just had rissole and chips with gravy and it was delicious...haven't had chippy food for a while since Barry's had been taken over and l have to say this chippy is very much worth a visit..

We took the long queue as a good sign but on reflection it was down to the inefficiency of the staff, 3 girls behind the counter but only 2 actually doing anything. The food was actually pretty good and not too expensive, but we'd waited so long we would've eaten an old boot.

Very Disappoined.I ordered Cod and chips and sausage and chips.The fish looked more like Plaice than Cod as it was so thin,batter was over cooked hence the fish was dry,tail end of fish was in edible.The 3 girls serving well what can I say but Appaling they were more concerned about where one of them was going to have her new piercing done than serving the customers the person Infront of me said thank you and good bye 3 times with no response from any of the 3 girls and muttered good luck with the piercing under his breath as he left.

Visited with my husband - we almost didn't bother as we hate queueing and there was a queue out of the door and along the road. Someone in the queue told us we wouldn't be disappointed and it was worth the wait...... well...... they were right! We both had large cod and chips with mushy peas. Everything was freshly cooked while we waited, the portions were huge and the cod was moist and perfectly cooked. It was a beautiful evening and we sat and ate our food overlooking the harbour. Perfect! In fact, we're going back tomorrow.

Very disappointed , I ordered fish and chips, sausage and chips and cheesy chips, the fish was more batter than fish and very dry.The container the cheesy chips were in had melted on one side. I felt quite embarrassed when we opened the food.
