Jolly Fryer in Ashfield

Ordered in afternoon for delivery at 6.15pm. Received email ensuring someone would be at home! Phoned repeatedly and eventually received meal at 7pm. Having been to the trouble to fill in online info and paying, consider this totally unacceptable and not even had an acknowledgement from them!

First time we have used the jolly friar chippy and found the service and food excellent, it was delivered on time and hot also excellent communication will definitely use again and highly recommend.

I went a few weeks ago So I ordered on the app for collection for pick up at 6:30 and got there 6.25, it was quite busy so didn’t mind waiting abit longer as we’ve been before and throughly enjoy the fish and chips and always piping hot, however on this occasion it got to 6:45 I was still waiting didn’t mind until people were coming up in the que for collection ordered over the phone at 6:45/6:50 and getting it before people that ordered on the app for a earlier time. In total I waited just under a hour, wasn’t happy, the food was still bang on, however they need to sort out there ordering system because waiting an hour outside in the cold is ridiculous. I would recommend eating here, however I wouldn’t recommend ordering on the app or on a Saturday night

Don't live in the area but have visited on two occasions this year and cannot fault the quality of the food. By far the best fish and chips in Nottinghamshire that I've tasted. The staff were so warm and welcoming, they seem to really enjoy what they do and this is reflected in the excellent customer service. I ordered the gluten free haddock and chips on both of my visits and it was superb. It's one thing offering gluten free options but it's another offering options which mirror the quality and taste of 'regular' items on the menu, however The Jolly Fryer have more than succeeded here.

Over the years tried different chip shops but always come back to this one,omg where do I start..The aptmosphere has always been so welcoming,nothing is never too much!!The food has always been top quality and the fish (whale)fills the plate and more,their kebabs are so tasty and filling.Decided to treat the family tonight to our favourite meals,already can't wait to tuck in. Theo and the members of his team really are amazing..Thank you for being so consistent over the years not only with the customer service (top quality)but also the food..

I’ve come from South Wales to visit family in Mansfield, I also work away from home most weeks and eat take away food most weekdays. I’m 63 years old and this is the best fish and chips I’ve ever had! I will definitely be coming back on our next visit! Do you deliver to Whales Thanks Theo it was absolutely beautiful

Great fish & chips and what a fantastic set up with the click & collect system, so easy to use and ready in 15 mins on a Saturday at 6, brilliant. Only down side was I sadly could not eat it all as the fish was massive but my son was happy to finish mine as well as his own.

You pay online, book your time slot and give your name on arrival. It really is smooth from start to finish. I am coeliac and picky about where I go, but Theo (and team) know their stuff and goes above and beyond.

My husband and I buy our evening meal every so often and our meals have been good. Until yesterday when we order of roe and fritter and steak and kidney pie and fritter. Normally our meal is still hot when we get home (2 minute drive) but yesterday the meal was cold.

As a Coeliac it is very difficult to get good gluten free takeaways that are close by. I found the Jolly Fryer and I am so glad I did. From the moment we walked in we were welcomed by Theo who could not have been more helpful whilst ordering my Gluten Free options.The staff were all very pleasant and even checked if my gluten free food was ok to be put in the same bag as the normal food.The food was fantastic. I absolutely could not fault it!!! Crispy batter, tasty fresh chips and not a neon coloured mushy pea in sight!! My husband had the fried chicken and described it as 'something special'. It may have been our first visit, but it will not be our last!!!

We as a family have visited Jolly Fryer several times over the last 6 months, we are a picky family and have up until now not found a chippy that meets all our needs, But Theo the owner of Jolly fryer goes the extra mile, nothing is to much trouble everything is cooked to perfection, you will go a long way to find any better chippy in our area prices are fantastic and the food is amazing

chips not bad , friendly service but the kebabs are awful! Yes they are big but the doner meat it like plastic, don't know what all the fuss is about.

Poor quality dry fish, served by a staff who are too busy being shouty about fish that they call “whales” that are smaller than many other fish shops... Go elsewhere; average food here that can be bettered elsewhere.

Ok, so i have just finished my "Jolly special" (which consists of mini fish, small sausage, chips and your choice of either peas, beans, curry or gravy [i had beans], when i say finished, i don`t mean, as in eaten it all, i mean finished to the point that i could not eat anymore.How on earth this place receives such rave reviews is beyond me. I had very high expectations while travelling from Mansfield to try the fayre at the jolly fryer and the word "disappointing" is an understatement. The fish and chips were no better than any other chippy in the local and surrounding area, in fact in most cases, not as good..The chap that runs this establishment is extremely polite and civil and i feel he uses this to his advantage to aid Tripadvisor reviews. If someone sells you average, or below average fish n chips, but he`s extremely civil and polite and even a bit "quirky", you can soon go from a two star rating, to a four star rating.My initial thoughts for a Tripadvisor review was a 1, but based on the above, ive given a generous 2

This is our local chippy and is very good. Fish cooked fresh and prices reasonable. They do a wrap with all three different meats and salad which is lovely.

This must be one of the best chippies that I have been to. The place is spotlessly clean and the staff are always very welcoming. Their food is excellent and they serve a large fish known as a "whale" The prices are also very good . The place is highly recommended

Always greeted with a massive “hello my friend” and serves the biggest “whale and chips” in town. Would happily wait in the long que for such a treat :)

Simply the best. Nothing can beat the service, the food and the great welcome. Look for the tell tale signs of a fantastic fish and chip shop that caters for all tastes, the que says it all. Fish steamed, baked fried with or without batter, you just gave to ask.

Went for food for me and my Gran, had to wait a while, but worth every bit of the wait. Mixed kebab was huge, 2, maybe 3 meals worth!

I live right in the middle of the Jolly Fryer and Ocean Blue and the two of them are the best chippies for miles around. Theo at Jolly Fryer is an absolute legend and treats everyone who walks through the door like a friend. The rest of the staff are great too and the service is always efficient.

One of the most cleanest chipbshops I've ever been into.. The owner was very polite as were the staff.. And the most yummyest gluten free fish and chips made to order. Seperate fryer for gf. And a chip only fryer.. With no xc issues.

If found hair in my food so didn't eat it, my husband also woken up with Belly pains, and the new lady is so rude to u all the time not just the ones I will not be going back there at all.

Just had to throw away a portion of haddock as stunk to high heaven and was slimy never again. The chips were poor and nothing Jolly about the staff

Found out have loads gluten free options gf fish sausage fish curry gravy etc staff really knowledgable . Big portions and importantly tasted great . Highly recommended !

I came here for the first time as they do gluten free fish and chips omg amazing, the portions are huge and its great value for money, the staff are so friendly, we will definitely be coming here from now on. Thankyou to theo and staff.

The fish is lovely and seems fresh, but a very thin layer of batter so the batter goes soggy quick unless your eating instantly, I like my batter crunchy/crispy :).

We were greated by the very welcoming and friendly ‘Jolly Fryer’ which was a nice touch! The fish and chips was amongst one of the best we’ve had and we’ve had a lot of fish and chips lol! Really good naan kebabs and home made chips, honestly the best I’ve had in UK! Next time I want to try fish&chips.; Place is clean and the ventilation is good and you don’t smell like a fish when you walk out.

I REALLY don't know why this place gets good reviews.

Called in passing having not been in for a while and waited and waited. People walk in and get orders already done as the staff are to busy with telephone orders and still the queue grows. If you want Tele orders join Just eat!!!! Finally placed my order after repeating it to the young girl THREE times and still she put a mixed tray kebab in a pitta Really!!!!!! Got home and the meat was barely warm and potentially hazardous at low temps like that won't darken it's doors again

Recently had dinner from jolly fryer and I honestly have to say it was the single best experience I’ve had in my 19 years in Nottingham, the staff are super friendly and the food is fantastic!! Great portion size and brilliant value for money! Definitely best place in Nottinghamshire!! Recommend 100% 5* ❤️

Had heard good reviews and I was certainly not disappointed. From the minute I walked in and was met by the friendly staff and the charismatic owner, to the minute I left with the best fish and chips I’d had in a long time. Lovely white non greasy chips and fantastic fresh cod with the lightest crispiest batter. Would highly recommend.

Best gluten free chip shop. Never been so happy when I fount out they did gluten free and even more happy when the curry sauce come out just taste like Chinese curry amazing!! Always look forward to having a gluten free battered sausage there so nice. Wish I could come all the time! Love it x

This place is by far the best chippy I have ever been too. The fish and chips are always fresh and full of flavour. The kebabs are to die for. The staff are friendly and approachable and the owner always talks to you.

Great chippy one of the best you could get really. We travel to this chippy going past plenty on the way just to get food here. Happiest guy behind the counter. The queues can be long but that’s only because everyone wants to eat here!

Nothing more than outstanding , yes you have a bit of a wait , but that is due tk the places popularity, and in all honesty it’s Work the every second .

The food itself is just ok to me.not bad and not amazing.chips were nice,fish was abit dry and curry was abit thin.

Visited this place on our stay over from Barnsley. The staff were fantastic and all very freindly, the fish and chips were of a substantial portion and tasted exceptional. Would advise anyone to try this place and can highly recommend

On my second visit to this place myself and my wife enjoyed sharing the mixed meat and naan with chips and salad. Thoroughly enjoyable food, served quickly, chips and meat were piping hot. Plenty enough to share between two. The meat was hot, soft and juicy, absolutley no complaints 5/5 will visit again, if I ever feel hungry again! :)

Don't get the hype, the recent couple of reviews I've just read about the owner, the wait time and staff is about right, so don't see the need to repeat myself. Hi and try it yourself but not really sure why they win awards. Also, a normal large fish ( not the whale) is smaller than other chip shops and is about the same price.

Without doubt the best outlet in Kirkby-Ashfield, arguably the best in Nottinghamshire. The proprietor always welcoming and staff so very friendly whenever you visit. Always so busy and customers visit from far afield. On a personal basis, has a good selection of 'Gluten-Free' foods.

Iv been a local person for many years , we don’t go to takeaways very often , but when we fancy chips this is the plaice to go , the crispyist batter in the whole of the district and the friendliest staff in the area , Theo is an absolute diamond and you couldn’t ask for a nicer guy , try his garlic nan kebabs there amazing , Theo will always remember your face and is like a brother from another mother

Just returned from Dorset and it’s the first time ever we have been to the seaside and not had fish’n’chips... Sounds corny, but nothing compares to the Jolly Fryer and his Whale and Chips! Just ordered and can’t wait to eat! Lovely! 😋

Just moved in to the area and this is our second visit too the Jolly fryer and looks like a permanent Friday night tea. Absolutely cracking great welcoming staff, foods great all cooked fresh and very tasty the standard of cleaning is great to see, colour coded utensils and boards no wonder you got 5star rating well done x

We don’t live nearby by any means but the detour is well worth it every time. Not being a fan of batter, Theo grilled me a haddock with some fresh lemon and it was fantastic. I am very fussy with fish and chips but recently committed to going to the Jolly Fryer. What a chip shop this is. Fantastic friendly staff, absolutely immaculate and sparkling clean. The food is the tip of the iceberg though. Theo made me a fish knowing I wasn’t a fan but my word it was amazing. We live a few miles from the Jolly Fryer but this will be the place we have fish and chips from now. I’m so glad that I took the challenge. I want disappointed in any way. More amazed of the way this chip shop is run. You should be very proud Theo. Definitely the best chip shop in the surrounding area if not one of the best in the country.

Well having read so many great reviews I thought I gotta try this chippy. I went Sat pm for me family. 1st impressions there was a massive queue 20 people plus but 4 serving so I thought must be good.

The food is great, spotlessly clean and tidy. There can sometimes be a wait for your food but this time can be mitigated with some friendly banter with the proprietor.

... when you dont want to chat and you just want the food, the casual chit-chat is NOT what you need ... takes an age to serve too

Called in here after reading all the reviews to get fish and chips for my family over from canada wish we hadnt chips tasted like they were from the night before and the fish yuck battter so soggy was awful never again

Sent my son in this afternoon to get us fish chips and peas whilst I waited as we saw the shop was empty and the fryer was playing on his phone to pass his time from the looks of it. Well wow ! It took him 16 minutes to cook us our fish whilst the shop was empty ! Wouldn't mind if there were any customers . When he eventually returns to the car and I open the bag .... not impressed at ALL . Our so called regular chips are more like a small what you normally get from other chip shops , the fish is soggy and the chips are sat in a polystyrene tray with oil floating at the bottom. The fish and chips are so greasy. On top of this I need to question what oil you fry in as it left an after taste ( chewing gum to get rid of the taste ) . I'm sorry to say all this but we threw away 3/4 of the meal as really was poor. Saturated in grease , really bad after taste , bad packaging and staff need to learn how to wrap up and maybe the fryer needs to be sent on a frying course ... bad bad bad. £7.20 wasted. Over priced for the size you get and that even we would over see if the quality was there but poor, even 2 hours after that taste is there ! Will not be coming back here with my money

Highly recommend the Chicken Kebab in Naan. Huge portion size. Very very good value. Tastes amazing, excellent quality meat and salad. Very friendly owner and staff.

This is an excellent fish & chip shop, I couldn't decide what to have from the menu so ended up going Theo's recommendation for the mixed meat naan. What can I say, excellent choice would definetly recommend this to other, be warned this is not a small dish though.

What can you say, perfection personified in delight. Fresh food with cracking service. As always, I heartily recommend the best fish and chip shop in the locality of Kirkby. Not once have I ever had bad food from this place. Neither have I had bad service - consistency is key. Price wise, excellent value for money. This place is well worth a visit. I recommend the colloquial whale - a piece tender wonderment. You will never get a fish fresher or better anywhere else. Visit, open, enjoy...

This is a lovely chippy with good food and staff,the problem is all the shouting from Theo, will someone tell him not everyone likes being referred to.as DAD or MUM, we use seafresh at Sutton in Ashfield because of him.

Called today the 30th of September all the way from Sheffield, that's right a 64 mile round trip! We're always happy to travel for quality and let me tell you that's exactly what you get, the cod is absolutely delicious, chunky white cod flakes in the most amazing crispy light tasty batter it simply melts in the mouth! And the chips are simply devine they are cooked to absolute perfection. Theo the owner and his team make you feel so special and you are welcomed as if you were family, I like that touch, you feel as if your custom is valued and wanted and that's so hard to find these days. To anyone reading my review thinking of making a visit, go for it! Having moved away 18 months ago I found myself in the area and had to visit especially as I hadn't seen the refit which is beautiful modern and clean. I wasn't disappointed with the food with either. I pleasant experience
