It used to be excellent. Last two times been terrible. So sad!

On 11.01.2024, Jin Kichi was given a food hygiene rating of 1 ("major improvement necessary"). "Management of food safety" is rated as "Major improvement necessary". Do an online search for "food hygiene ratings" and search by postcode NW3 6UG to see more details for "Jinkichi Ltd".

I dislike writing bad reviews and never bother with them, however I genuinely wasn't happy with the service. I've been here twice, however the second time around wasn't as great as the first time around. The first time I visited, we had no reservations, was treated better, not rushed, food was cooked properly, etc. This was on a busy day also. The second time around, my partner had booked a reservation weeks in advance. We were given great seats. This is where the problem arises: Our food was served to us extremely late, some of the food (chicken skewers) were not cooked properly. Our booking was for 20:00PM, We were also told that we needed to leave the table by 20:40PM (?) Our food arrived to us by 20:25PM-20:30PM leaving us barely any time to eat and making us feel extremely rushed. Our chicken skewers came last minute as we asked for the bill... Something to also keep in mind is the hygiene rating of 1.

The best Japanese restaurant in London

Mentioned as one of Kate Moses favourite places on social media, we booked out a lunch ( it only lasts for 2-ish hours ). The restaurant is small, yet warm and has an authentic feel. The menu is varied and has lots of options for both veggies and meat eaters ( though veggies beware you could be sat next to some meat at the bar.) The sushi was exquisite, as was the tofu. The chicken katsu was the most succulent and delicious version of the meal we had ever had, and is enough for a return visit on its own.

A charming Japanese restaurant with a cosy ambiance. This tiny looking restaurant has two sections – one section for sushi/sashimi, another for grills, plus extra seats downstairs. Food quality is top-notch – Mikan Dai (mandarin red snapper) Sashimi blew my mind! I’ve never experienced such Sashimi even in Japan. I loved it so much so that I orderd it twice 😳And the grill dishes were equally amazing. It is on pricey side but for authentic Japanese food lovers, it's a must-visit.

Been meaning to visit here for a while and we finally came here for my partners birthday. One can find authentic and tasty izakaya food and sake on the menu. Vibe in the restaurant was great it felt like we were back in Japan. Can get very busy but we were lucky enough to get a same day reservation. It’s on the expensive side we it is within our expectation. We will be back for special occasions.

Not a huge amount we can say here, a tiny Japanese restaurant serving fantastic sushi. We went for our family Christmas meal and had a fantastic time. Fairly reasonably priced, considering some of its peers a few miles into town. Highly recommended.

A unique gem in Hampstead. Very versitile manue. Not just sushi. Very high quality food.

The expansion has made it easier to reserve. But we were rushed by the service throughout and most dishes were uninspired, badly prepared either too cold or lukewarm with mediocre ingredients. Sushi was meh. Of course the skewers were still fantastic.

Neighbourhood diner experience at a fine dining price. Our recent experience at Jin Kichi was very average. The waitress was unwelcoming and service was slow. It appeared like we were being a done a favour. Seems this Hampstead old timer is becoming complacent because of the crowds trying to get in.

Been visiting this restaurant for 13 years now and it has never disappointed. It’s my favourite restaurant in London.

Feels as though I was back in Japan. Quality is fantastic even in Tokyo standards. Those of you who know Japanese food, I totally recommend.

Incredibly tasty meal and a very affordable price.

Really good Japanese food. They serve sushi, sashimi, yakitori and soba. Everything we got was flavorful, authentic and amazingly fresh. The hamachi sashimi was really fresh, the spicy tuna roll had really good flavor and the lamb yakitori tasted amazing with a nice smoky char flavor. The tempura soba was also very good with a clean dashi and nice al dente soba noodles. I was visiting the area while on vacation and this was the best restaurant I dined at while in the UK. Service was also friendly and stellar. Highly recommended!!

Amazing wagyu beef! That was the highlight of our night. Tender and well cooked! Sushi portions are on the smaller size compared to other sushi restaurants.

Sat downstairs kinda out of the way, food nothing special, had Katsu chicken came with a little lettuce? No rice.. never heard of that.. the sashimi was small portion?.. really not worth the £180 ... not sure what the hype is about. Maybe coming from Vancouver my expectations were high..

Loved it. Best tempura King prawns I've ever eaten, succulent tasty chicken terriyaki cooked over a grill in front of you and amazing udon noodles with pieces of crispy pork that just took the dish to a new level that I've never experienced before. Can't wait to go back. Staff were so helpful too. Highly recommend for a taste of Japan.

Always five star. Exceptional ingredients, beautifully prepared

The quality of sushi is excellent , the grilled fish was missing a sauce (supposed to be black cod Miso certainly not Roca equivalent). Prices are not cheap ... And quantity rather small. We were asked to leave at short notice only after 1.5hours ... We pushed back so we can have some rather forgettable deserts. Bottom line : for sushi it is still one of the best for the rest you have better options.

Some of the best Japanese food I've had anywhere in the world and reasonably priced too. Wonderful service and great atmosphere. A real joy to eat here. Can't wait till the next time.

Good food, but not sure if I want to come here again. I felt extremely rushed to leave and wasn't able to relax. Additionally, the staff was rude to other staff members, which made me uncomfortable as a customer.

Jin Kichi is a gem! Chanced upon it when we were walking around Hampstead and so glad we booked for lunch the following day. It’s such an authentic joint with an extensive menu. Great prices for their lunch sets. We ordered quite a bit. The sashimi was exquisitely presented. The yakitori set lunch hits the spot with the warm rice served. Daughter says the salmon onigiri is one the best she’s had. Staff were very kind and very attentive. Space reminds us of dining in a Tokyo. It’s a special little place.

The grilled skewers are amazing! must try- ox tongue, chicken wings, chicken gizzards. The grilled prawn and salmon jaw are also super tasty. Love the salmon onigiri as well, everything is just superb. 5 stars food, service, and ambiance- an authentic Japanese izakaya experience.

Amazing Japanese restaurant ! I would recommend 100%…it’s very clean, the food is amazing especially the sushi if you are a sushi lover. Feels very authentic and the service is good. Make sure to reserve otherwise it’s difficult to have a walk-in seat

Great Izakaya style Japanese restaurant. Menu is varied, includes sushi, tempura, yakitori, mains. Also has a nice sake selection. Highly recommend the yakitori (grilled skewers).

Amazing restaurant, lovely team who really care about your experience and the food they serve.

I visited with my Japanese wife and 7 year old daughter. We were seated immediately - I had made a reservation for 6.45. The restaurant's request was that we leave by 8pm. Service was crisp, fast and accurate, controlled by the female head waiter. Food was delicious. We had sushi, aubergine, many skewers, natto roll, sake, and more. Ultimate comment: my Japanese foodie wife said we should go back and take friends. Praise indeed. We didn't leave the table until 8.25. The restaurant was fine with this. Also, there was a lovely friendly and relaxed atmosphere in the basement space that we shared with a boisterous extended family enjoying a birthday celebration, who we chatted to.

Jin Kichi used to be one of my favourite Japanese restaurants in London and I had been here for more than five times for different occasions. Sadly I have to give it three stars this time because of the dining experience. The wait for the grilled items was simply too long. My visit was on a Saturday night so I was only allowed 1.5 hours to dine, which was clearly stated in the reservation system and I was supposed to leave at 19:30. However, I waited for one hour for the grilled food and it didn’t arrive until 19:35. During the wait, a waitress asked me to place the last order - but my first order wasn’t even arrived at that time. The skewers arrived so late and the waitress was apologetic (not her fault of course), and although no one hurried my group to leave, we managed to finish the food in 10 minutes as we felt the time pressure. We all came here for the grilled items, but it’s such a shame that we were in mad rush to finish them in the end. My previous visits at Jin Kichi had always been pleasant. I appreciate their grilled food is freshly prepared so I always expect some wait, but an-hour wait for 10 skewers was not reasonable. The sushi was also just so-so. I’m not sure if I’d visit again. To me I’m more inclined towards an izakaya-style dining experience, which I could take my time to enjoy the food, beverage, lively atmosphere and warm hospitality. Perhaps this restaurant is getting too busy and popular, and I don’t feel the same anymore.

Unassuming place that feels a little like Japan. A lot of the customers appear to be Japanese and it's no surprise why. The place is known for its skewers (usually served in izakayas), however the rest of it was also wonderfully tasty. My absolute favourite was the nabeyaki udon, which looks simple but was absolutely stunning, a must-try. Amazing little gem and can't wait to visit again. Service was excellent.

Interesting place. I wasnt a big fan of the broth (ramen) as it seemed not very rich but everything else was nice. I would recommend.

I was looking forward to dining at Jin Kichi to try a more authentic approach than what most central London places have to offer. Great first impressions! The interior and atmosphere really took us back to Japan. Humble furnishings, but so true to form of a simple and cosy izakaya. We sat at the grill counter, it was amazing! Some Kushiyaki skewers were a bit underwhelming, but still an enjoyable accompaniment to the sake and beer, which we had loads of ) The menu is huge, perhaps too big for my liking. I’d drop the noodles and the bowls and focus on grilled foods and sushi (which were executed perfectly btw). All in all - very enjoyable, a nice local spot. Would recommend, especially if you’re in that area.

Tried this place out with a friend last night and it's instantly become one of my top 5 Japanese restaurants in town! We had made a reservation prior and were glad we did because it was packed at 7pm on a Thursday. I was greeted very nicely by one of the staff members which then led me to the table and was met by another immediately who gave me the menu. It's got an extensive menu with a range of food - sashimi and sushi, skewers, rice and udon dishes, deep fried dishes and small plates as starters. My friend is vegetarian so we decided to order separately and we shared the yakinasu (grilled aubergine with bonito flakes). I went with the salmon sashimi (5 pieces) and mixed tempura. To be honest, I was surprised to see the new prices as the menu they have attached in their website online had older/ lower prices so I had to change my mind on the spot and go for just salmon sashimi (£18) instead of the mixed set (£23 for 9 pieces) because it's so expensive. The mixed tempura though, on the other hand was actually very reasonably priced (£13 for 3 prawns and a mix of vegetables). Nonetheless, the sashimi were extremely fresh and rich and creamy so I could understand why it was pricey but still this is where they lost a star because this is certainly not a place for affordable or cheap eats. My friend went for vegetarian sushi, mushroom and asparagus skewers and seaweed salad which she all enjoyed. All in all, we really enjoyed our time here and we didn't get kicked out after our reservation time ended. Would love to come back and try other things next time but it will have to be around pay day!

Of Japanese restaurants, this is definitely one of the better ones. Just like other Japanese restaurants, be prepared to pay for quality rather than quantity. And make sure your wallet is thick enough. With 4 people, we spent well over 100 pounds. I personally wouldn’t come back just for the food, because even though it was good, it didn’t make a lasting impression. And the environment was so-so. They did remodeled so now the downstairs is more spacious with semi-private booths, but you can definitely hear others. And the service was fine. Overall this place is fine, no problems but isn’t exactly the best Japanese place you will find.

I could not be more disappointed with Jin Kicki. We had a reservation and they cancelled our reservation and you cant get through to them on the phone... If the food is great the Service and Hospitality is terrible

Woww, the food, the taste and quality was just top notch. We tried few of the skewers (mushrooms, asparagus, and shishito peppers). The black cod was out of this world, crispy on the outside, tender on the inside. And the classic tempura prawns and veggies were fresh and tasty. Def a gem and suggest to try…

Old customer put off by treatment I received, won't be coming back

If you want top Japanese cuisine and service, Jin Kichi is the place. The food is absolutely delicious, the sushi are the best that I’ve ever eaten, the grilled salmon is so soft, tender and juicy. The chicken katsu is the best. All meat are perfectly grilled. The service is impeccable, we had the privilege to be served by Ryan, who really cares about the clients and giving the best possible service. All his colleagues are equally committed. Finally difficult to find a more authentic setting, with the wooden tables and places around the grill. Overall a brilliant experience! Thank you Ryan!

Excellent fresh and authentic Japanese food. Service has also been consistently good. But be warned, they are very busy so make sure you book and they closed on Mondays! At least the restaurant is now bigger.

Great menu, the best Japanese food that I’ve ever tasted. Service was quick, if a bit rushed at times, but never to the point of impoliteness. The venue is cramped, which is something that I dislike, but the food and service more than make up for it.

We came here for a quick lunch and were impressed by the dishes. The staff were friendly and sat us down at the bar, even though the place was a bit narrow it didn’t bother us. The noodle soup 🍲 was tasty and you can taste the nice dashi stock with the udon noodles. We also had a mixed grilled meat plate which was nice as well. Overall great experience. If you like Japanese food you will appreciate this place.

Terrible experience - our booked spot was given to somebody else - the service was incredibly slow, the portions small, we were mostly hungry waiting for food which came sporadically with the rice first then an hour later other dishes - our experience was not a good one

Food: As a Japanese myself I would firstly point out that it was very expensive for something that was not enough. Meaning the portion sizes were Tiny. I'd even say nearly Micro. I don't mind the idea of selling something per piece/stick/skewer. But they were so small that i felt disappointed. I came to have Yakitori and I was served a kids meal in a sort of way. And to really like go all the way we even ordered Soba on top to feel full because we were hungry. The problem wasn't the flavour it was the size of the dish Vs what it costs! Drinks : we ordered the Oolong highball, and Ume sour again disappointing. They put maybe a 30ml of the base alcohol in a big 750ml glass... Mixed with Oolong or Soda... So you can imagine what it might have been like. For something that costs 12-13 pounds... I would say nope...I'd rather make this at home. Service: was spot on, as I would expect it to be in Japan so no points lost there. Overall: we paid about 260 pounds for a dinnerfor 4 people who were still hungry by the time we got home. I wouldn't say the food was bad but tiny Would I go there again : Maybe not.... I'd look for other Japanese options in London...

One of the few truly authentic Japanese restaurants in London. Highly recommend! Really love the skewers and the sashimi / nigiri is very fresh.

Incredible food, incredible staff and atmosphere

Excellent food, some of the best I've had at Japanese restaurants, with a very wide selection of prices (from sushi rolls and skewers at £3-4 to large fish or meat dishes at £25+) and types of items (small plates, sushi, grilled dishes, etc.). The drinks prices, however, are very steep (£50 or so minimum for bottles of wine or sake; the only cheaper option for alcohol is beer); something to be aware of.

I genuinely love this place and would warmly recommend it to anyone. The quality of the food is fantastic and in particular the sushi is some of the best I have ever had. We thoroughly enjoyed sitting by the sushi counter watching the expert chefs prepare it with such care and dedication. The menu is very varied but all things I have tried were delicious and impeccably prepared. The service can be a little jumbled at times but nothing to seriously complain about. We'll certainly be back.

Great meal, the nigiri was lovely. Miso soup was great, so was the udon noodle soup. Grilled dishes took long to come out. But overall had a great time. Make sure to book in advance.

A must go place if you fancy a treat , Price for above dishes +4 Gin and Tonic drinks + service fees = £139.00 Overall great quality of food , recommend this place for a special occasion meal.

Excellent food, authentic service. We've been in Japan before, and this place felt just like that.

Restaurant is somewhat local to us, we are East Finchley while Jin Kichi is Hampstead. I wanted to try this place after learning about it through a review in the FT. We booked a few weeks in advance. On arrival the vibe is very authentic izakaya. We ordered a round of sashimi and sushi followed by the yaki grill selection. The reviews complaining about burnt food probably don't actually like grilled food and should opt for other menu items. Food was fresh, high quality, perfectly presented and tasted delicious. Service was attentive and considerate and the environment was busy and vibrant while allowing intimate conversation and dining.

I can’t rate high enough for this hidden gem in London. Both the food and drinks menu are extensive. The food here are authentic which I like, not the modified version or fusion Japanese. Seatings are very small, but it brings you exactly the feeling of how a yakitori place or sushi restaurant in Japan is. We tried all kinds of stuff: appetisers, sushi, rolls, yakitori and grilled fish. All were awesome. I couldn’t believe I found such a high quality authentic Japanese restaurant in London.

On the ground floor is where it's at; the view, the smell, and the heat for the grill makes for a great atmosphere. I have been a few times and try to sample as many "odd" dishes as possible; the grilled quails eggs and the nattō sushi rolls being a big hit. One of my favourite restaurants in London.

I recently had the pleasure of dining at Jin Kichi in Hampstead and I must say it was a delightful experience. The authenticity of the Japanese cuisine at Jin Kichi is truly outstanding. Their menu offers a wide range of options and each dish is expertly prepared, showcasing the flavors and techniques of traditional Japanese cooking. One of the highlights of my visit was sitting at the robata bar, where I could witness the skilled chef grilling and preparing the food right before my eyes. It added an extra layer of excitement to the dining experience and allowed me to appreciate the artistry behind each dish.

Definitely one of the best Japanese restaurant in London. The chef and staff are mostly Japanese, with really hundred of authentic Japanese dishes to select. Sashimi and sushi is really nice, with very fresh seafood.

It is a good place to date. The Japanese noodle is really good. All of food is awesome.

Highly recommended small Japanese eatery. Fresh Shaari I, melt in the mouth belly pork, grilled fish platter, and the works. Everything is delicious.

Really good food and experience. The food was authentic and reminded me of Japan, especially the yakitori. The staff was very mindful and considerate. The atmosphere was very nice and relaxing too.

Lovely skewers of meat and veg in the beautiful Hampstead. The sushi was also delicious. Only giving it a 4 star because all the popular skewers were sold out by the time we had dinner there (9:30pm) so I advise getting an early dinner booking so you get all the options. Other than that, the place is solid and the service was top tier.

The restaurant was busyish so the atmosphere was good, the interior of the restaurant gives it quite an authentic Japanese feel. Upon sitting down we looked through their (extensive) menu and ordered a few beers whilst deciding on what to eat. Our waiter (a young man probably between 18-22) asked repeatedly if we had decided what we wanted to order, I mean like, 3/4 times in 10 minutes, it made us both feel pretty awkward and rushed, to be honest. Anyway, we ordered some Sushi, Salmon Teriyaki, Chicken Katsu a chicken skewer, and some Padron peppers. The waiter made a weird point about whether it should all come together or separately and we just said well the Sushi first the rest together. The food came (minus the sushi) which was honestly slightly above average and took half an hour to come, which was ironic as we were super rushed to order. Anyway 15 mins after pretty much finishing what they had brought I asked to cancel the Sushi as it was clearly not coming or being made. Our waiter was really rude about it quite obnoxious and insolent like 'its coming god' clearly doesn't know how to speak to customers. Whatever life is too short. I asked for the bill, asked for the service charge to be taken off, to which he responded by literally laughed in our faces not asking how he could have done better, and made some smarmy comment under his breath. He was probs at uni and didn't really care about the job or maybe it was his parent's restaurant and thought sod it I can act how I want. Anyway, it was a shame as we probably would have gone back and I probably wouldn't be writing this review, but you know I hope the manager of Jin Kichi reads this and does something about it. I won't be returning and will definitely not recommend it to anyone in the area. A shame really.

We booked and when we arrived two hours later they said we didn't have a reservation, even though the 3 of us all heard them confirm on the phone.

We ordered some skewers, sushi and tempura. Sushi and tempura were ok but skewers burned. Overall the quantity are small compared with the price and quality. Lamb was really hard but pork ok. We had the chance to order only once because the kitchen was closing and some orders arrived really late. Maybe they need a bigger fireplace to cover all the orders in time. The waiters were really kind but the service slow.

Came here for lunch. We have been before and enjoyed it previously. The prawn tempura lunch was really good. A good sized portion too. Wife had the chirashi mixed seafood bowl which she thoroughly enjoyed. We ordered the red miso aubergine which was simply delicious, highly recommended getting that one. We also ordered some grilled meat skewers which were all very delicious, albeit very expensive for what they are, hence the four stars. Overall, I highly recommend visiting Jin Kichi, especially for their lunch deals.

Jon Kichi has officially been added to my top 5 Japanese restaurants. The quality of the sushi and yakitori is incredible, and the staff were good with our 2 kids in terms of accommodations. It can get very busy so I would recommend making reservations. We were lucky as we showed up without a reservation right at opening time and got a table for an hour, but it filled up almost immediately at opening time.

Little jewel in the heart of Hampstead. So lucky to have this restaurant in my neighborhood. Food is outstandingly delicious, all of it. Service is professional and friendly. Keep in mind to book this place in advance, never saw free table there.

Amazing food!!! Strongly recommend sushi🤩

The restaurant was very busy even on a weekday lunch time. We ordered mix sashimi, mix tempura and mixed skewers to share for 2 persons. Food was delectable. The service was exceptional, they were very attentive and quick to serve. Thank you very much for letting me charge my phone at the counter after 10.30pm and helped me to make a phone call, so that I could get home. Domo arigatogozaimasu! I am grateful.

Quite pricey but always great food guaranteed Highly recommend fish jaw and skewers

Super bad experience, we wait for more than an hour for the food.

Best meal I’ve had in a while. Perfect neighborhood restaurant, with reasonable prices, great service, and absolutely excellent food. Really varied menu but the kitchen is firing on all cylinders - we loved the sushi, yakitori, AND tonkatsu that we ordered. Would highly recommend and can’t wait to return!

This gets 5 stars as it is unmistakably authentic Japanese food. Everything is top notch and quality is second to none. Menu is extensive with plenty of vegan & veg options including miso aubergine and sautéed mixed mushrooms which were both incredible. Be prepared to book in advance as the place is always packed with good reason. Staff are friendly, but always rushed off their feet and things could be organised better. Every time we have been there things have been forgotten, missed or order taken down wrong. Hope this improves!

I was really looking forward to eating here but had to leave after 20 mins of sitting and being completely and entirely ignored (not even a ‘sorry we’re busy’). It also appeared as if different guests received very different treatment. Today I learned that customer service really matters to an eating experience!
