Jewel in the Crown in Dumfries & Galloway

We had a delivery from here and it was not great. 2 of the 3 main courses were average, with the sauce for one being runny, insipid and glowing yellow, the other being too spicy after being advertised as not. The third main was a glowing red, tasty, but glowing. The move away from artificial colouring has not reached this premises. The side dishes were fine and the delivery in good time. The naans were huge. The papadums and chutney trays were fine. Perhaps we caught them on an off day.

The food was absolutely delicious and the staff were helpful and friendly. Reasonably priced too. Couldn’t fault it. Yum!

Excellent food and service here as usual. We have been coming here for quite a few years and it is the best Indian food restaurant in the area. You won’t get any better. The food is cooked to perfection and if you want it a little hotter- just ask. If you’re unsure what to have - you will always be given good recommendations. We absolutely love it.

Food was amazing. Staff very friendly and welcoming. We only had a main course, which neither of us could finish as we were so full. The quality of the food and taste was the best (and we come from Edinburgh with a wealth of Indian restaurants to choose from). Will definitely be back next time we are in the area.

We have been having our Indian food from jewel in the crown now for several years. Only once we have had something that was not quite right but we are all human and can make mistakes. Overall our food we have had has been absolutely fantastic We have had food from other Indian restaurants around the area but we always go back to here because we know that it will be FANTASTIC. Keep up the great work lads and lassies. You have a customer for life here.....

A party of 6 of booked this restaurant a good 2 weeks earlier, knowing it could be difficult to get somewhere to eat on a Saturday night. We enter at our agreed time, we were ushered to our table, then we waited, and waited and waited. Then a waiter came and asked us if we required drinks, he also took our order (Poppadoms, 2 each, meal to follow). Then we waited and waited and waited, eventually, the starter arrived. Starter done, lets move on to the main meal. You know the scene by know, we waited and waited and waited, and believe it or not, we waited some more. We had been in the building for 1 hour and 25 mins and had our first course, nothing more. As all the take aways were going out, we did contemplate phoning for a take away and asking for it to be delivered to table number #, I am sure it would have been quicker. Loads of people who came in after us, were served before us and some had left the building. Eventually, the meal came. Hurrah, was it worth the wait? No not really, our party of 6 are fortunate to be pretty well travelled and have visited umpteen establishments like this one. But never have we waited this long for what turned out to be a meal of less than average quality. I saw a lot of reviews for this place and thought we would be getting a good night, how wrong could I have been. The owners will probably say, "we were very busy", "the staff were run off their feet". Sorry guys, that isn't my issue. The remedy is, employ more staff, throughout and make sure your "in house" customers are the most important people in your business, because if they "walk", your business will be ruined in no time.

I have had issues with this place before but decided to give them another chance....... what a big mistake that was. On the telephone I asked for 2 main meals, 3 plain nan breads and 1 pilau rice. This place is renowned for leaving things out of orders so I distinctly repeated that I wanted 3 nan breads What we received was shocking......for £24.00 we got what looked like 2 kids meals, really small portions, 2 plain nan breads and a miniscule pilau rice. I mean it this time NEVER AGAIN, complete RIP OFF.

Was on holiday and visited the town and booked dinner here. I cannot find a single fault. The staff were all very polite, kind and attentive without making a nuisance of themselves. I had high hopes for this place and convenient to my home being a 10 minute drive away I placed an order online at 6.20pm and took the 7.00pm option for collection. I arrived at 7 and was told it could be 5 or 10 mins, which was fine as the place didn’t look particularly busy but staff seemed under pressure. I returned 15 mins later and waited another 5 mins before being presented with my meals. I thought it was better to have freshly cooked than sitting for 10 mins .. on arrival at home 10 mins later and unveiling the food provided .. I can only describe my mood as disappointed. Chicken tikka tandoori … swimming in grease chicken chasing that I could only describe as 8 pieces of minute chicken cooked in tomato soup .. you couldn’t even see the chicken in the tray without fishing around in the “sauce” for it . Not worth the money and throws doubt on the 5 star reviews posted .. if you want a decent curry the 20 mile drive to Dumfries from here more than makes up for the disappointment. If the food was worth the wait it would have been fine but this certainly wasn’t. A kebab shop would provide better quality food than this restaurant and would be a fraction of the cost

Is a really fabulous place to eat , heard of it by word of mouth and wasn’t disappointed . Food was amazing and staff were just lovely . Well worth a try and a great place to stop on way to and from Dumfries x

After being closed due to lock down the restaurant was reopened last week. I went for a sit down meal, where the table had to be pre-booked due to safe distancing, with a friend and we both thoroughly enjoyed the experience. With the warm welcome; attentive service and excellent standard of meals this restaurant is highly recommended. This is an excellent example of why we, as a nation, should support our local suppliers and businesses at this unprecedented time. Added to this was a bonus discount of 20%.

Before you leave this place with a takeaway please check that you have everything as my past 2 orders were missing items, during this lock down i am surprised that the staff are not outside with paint brushes as the overall appearance of this place is just awful, this is the first impression that people get and it is filthy and i will certainly not be returning.

Too bad they are not serving takeaway during lockdown as we really miss their excellent curries.We regularly get a takeaway and the quality and taste and value for money is the best in the area for Indian food.

We have used this takeaway on numerous occasions and have always had an excellent meal. Although my husband tries something different each time I have to have the veggie tikka masala, lemon rice and peshwari nan. This is the best vegetarian Indian meal I've ever had. They use fresh, chunky vegetables in the masala not frozen or packet veg that many others use. The lemon rice is amazing, so tasty and zingy. As per other reviews, the staff are so helpful and welcoming when you visit to eat in or pick up. So pleased to have this restaurant on our doorstep.

Visited the restaurant on burns night evening for a takeaway meal for 3,very pleasant owner and staff, who couldn't do enough for us, as soon as we entered the door we were met by pleasant staff, who quickly guided us to the bar area to take our order, upon arriving back at home we tucked into our meals delicious food everyone had a different meal and thoroughly enjoyed it, and the icing on the cake was complimentary papadums, would recommend if you are in the area to give the place a go, you won't be disappointed, thx again Graham .

We ate here recently, and had a marvellous meal. It was a stormy Monday night at the beginning of January, so we had the place to ourselves. It was fine though, as the music wasn't overpowering, and the waiter didn't feel the need to keep coming to see us. The food was excellent. For starters I had shredded duck in a puri (with a mint dip) and my husband had a deep fried shredded chicken dish (pakora we think). Both were excellent. For mains, I had monkfish, deep fried but in a sauce with onions and peppers. My husband had a beef dish, which wasn't as spicy as the menu suggested, but still very tasty. We each had a huge naan. Definitely large portions all round. Wine (Columbard chardonnay) by the glass was also very good. We'll definitely return.

Had some chicken pakora, a chicken jalfrezi and a chicken madras from here over New Year break. Pakora was disappointing with a lot of batter. There was a lot of oil on top of the madras but the curries were very tasty. We also had a peshawari naan bread as well, which was tasty. A bit of a wait but one of only a handful of takeaways in Castle Douglas. Thank you.

Ordered a takeaway tonight 20/12. Garlic, Chilli Tikka Chicken. The sauce was ok but sweet not spicy, therewasa lot of oil on top.What let it down was the quality of the chicken, It was dry and stringy, some bits didnt taste good. It had not absorbed any of the taste of the curry.Poor effort. This place used to be very good.

We were happy with our meal here, which was on a par with a good takeaway, but not with the best of Indian restaurant meals I've had. Portions were huge, which may please some but the giant onion bhajis were over-facing. The puri of my prawn puri was hard, not fluffy and light, as it should be. The menu is good value, though we felt the chefs specials were over-priced at c.£15 each. Inside and out the restaurant needs at least a lick of paint.

Firstly dont be put off my the shabby exterior. Yes it badly needs re decorating however once inside the building it's much better. Yes its basic but clean! The waiting staff were very attentive and the food.....gets justvsay that I've grown up near Bradford and know what a good curry is. This hit the mark. There were 11 of us in our group and without exception everyone really enjoyed what they ate. We went on a busy Saturday night and service was a bit slow but we were out to enjoy the evening, have a few beers and relax so it wasnt really an issue. The food was plentiful and very tasty. Shabby outside. Plain inside but great food and attentive service. They seem to do a very brisk trade in take aways. If you like Indian food then go there.

As above we went for the monthly Sunday buffet ( last Sunday of every month). Its £11.95 per head and you can’t prebook.
