Beautiful Sunday lunch today, cooked perfectly! I had the mushrooms to start, my husband had the soup, then both had the Beef dinner, absolutely gorgeous! No room left for desserts today for us but saw others and they looked lovely. Thankyou for booking us in last minute due to a cancellation, best dinner around and wonderful service as always! X

We frequently visit the Islwyn inn for Sunday lunch and it’s always the same and always absolutely stunning. I just feel it’s time I write a review. We dined there today and I had the pork and my wife had the beef Sunday lunch. We both agree that nothing comes close to how tasty and generous portion size we get at the Islwyn Inn. Such friendly service and beautiful surroundings. Well done everyone involved.

Can highly recommend this restaurant. We celebrated my husband’s birthday in the private room available at the pub. Wonderful food. Really stylishly presented. The menus are varied and different catering for all tastes. Thank you to owner for his hospitality who opened up in afternoon to allow us to decorate the room. The restaurant is beautifully decorated too. Love the Welsh theme. Thank you again.

Outstanding! Plenty of well groomed, well dressed staff serving really lovely food in a warm and well decorated restaurant. A really pleasant experience, way above any other local restaurant that we have tried.

Went as a party of 8 for retired ladies Christmas party, this was the second year running and the food was yet again amazing, as was the service! Can't fault any of the delicious food and I've been reliving eating it every day since and can't wait to go back...beautiful slow cooked beef was something to die for, compliments indeed to the chef! All the party enjoyed their meals immensely. My only very minor gripe was that we found it chilly this year having been spoilt by a freestanding space heater last year which was so welcoming! But this didn't warrant losing any stars, delightful! Well done and thank you x

Great restaurant, staff, food and ambience. We had a works 'do' there, 26 of us and the food was wonderful, we all ate together and the staff were wonderful, nothing too much trouble. The food was amazing - I had turkey which was succulent and tasty with no fat at all (I'm not a big fan of turkey either, but this was lovely); the traditional Christmas veg were cooked to perfection, tasty and plentiful; both starter and dessert (prawn & salmon cocktail and 3-cheesecake dessert) were gorgeous. I've eaten in 'posh' and expensive restaurants but this is the best I have had anywhere, especially for the price - £30.00 for 3 course Christmas menu, can't fault that at all! It was such a lovely experience, I took my son there on the Sunday as well and we had the usual 3-course Sunday Lunch (£23.00) which again was excellent VFM and totally delicious. I had beef which was reminiscent of Scottish thick flank - no fat at all and beautifully succulent and tasty. Usual veg again cooked to perfection, which my son hoovered up to the point of being full as he hates waste. I was getting full halfway through but had to keep eating, it was so lovely. This is a privately owned restaurant and they do things their way - none of this 'chain' rules for them, thankfully, just pure delight for their customers. The staff on both occasions were lovely, nothing too much trouble and very friendly. I can't wait to go again! If you like a really good Sunday roast, you must try this restaurant, it's the best!

I have just had the most amazing food I have ever tasted (better than the gourmet hotels I've stayed in and the Walnut Tree). Can't wait to go back! Beetroot Wellington was delicious. Veg was fantastic. Desert was equally good. Highly recommend this place.

The Islwyn Inn is a really friendly venue with lovely food and great customer service. I went on a work lunch event and had a great time. The food is high quality and the team worked hard to make sure we had everything we needed. Highly recommended.

The owners very kindly fitted us in as a last minute booking for the Christmas menu launch night. The meals my husband and I had were both faultless and great value for money, and the service was exceptional- we can't wait to come again!

I celebrated my 60th birthday here with family & close friends and the evening was a huge success. Nothing was too much trouble and all members of staff were very attentive & super helpful. The food was outstanding (as usual) and the presentation of each plate of food delightful. All guests were highly complimentary of Rob’s culinary expertise. They also loved the cosy atmosphere of Dexter’s Cwtch where we enjoyed drinks after the meal.

I can’t thank everyone at the Islwyn Inn enough for the wonderful service and superb Sunday my family received today. We were a large group to accommodate but the staff and food were simply amazing, my appreciation to everyone involved.

Amazing staff so polite even the young girls as you can see some are new. The Sunday lunch was amazing they also do tasting 6 course meals which are also amazing. That was first time Sunday lunch and will definitely go again.

Lovely comfortable atmosphere and friendly staff. They currently have a small menu and we all ordered something different but each dish was nicely presented and we all enjoyed our choices. We especially enjoyed the sharing platter for our starter. Overall good value for money.

Just had a fantastic take away meal. My husband thought we hadn't been charged for the deserts but 2 courses for £10 each!!!Would most certainly pay at least £15 each for this superb food.Never fails to impress and I'm a fussy eater but love, love, love their food.Thank you guys, keep up the good work. :) Xx

We visit this wonderful place as often as possible, it really is a special place. The food is the best food we have eaten out anywhere! Feel completely safe visiting so very sad with the latest restrictions. We will continue to have takeaways in the new year until we are able to visit again. Had the three bird roulade and can't remember having such a tasty meal as this. All of our meals were exceptional and the desserts were just as good. We really can't recommend this place enough.

We have been coming to Islwyn Inn for many years, first time for Sunday lunch. Restaurant is set out well due to covid restrictions. Food is fantastic, Rob the chef makes amazing food. Staff are all friendly and the service is excellant. Cant reccomend this place enough. Looking forward to the next time we can visit.

Enjoyed a fabulous Sunday lunch -as always! All our party including the 2 children enjoyed a beautifully cooked meal. Well presented, well seasoned & plenty of it. As well as the variety of mains we enjoyed the broccoli & Stilton soup, so creamy -delicious.All of our desserts were amazing, cheesecake dripping in caramel & honeycomb in chocolate on the top, chocolate pots served with a side of mint sticks- this place offers value for money with high quality food. I had takeaway beef dinners last Sunday. This is possibly my 6th. I can't compliment the chef enough. The food is faultless. The service is second to none. Highly recommended. Definitely up at number 1 top takeaway Sunday lunches.

We had our wedding reception here two months ago which was amazing and decided to go for Sunday lunch today. Didn't fail, was as tasty and fulfilling as it was on our big day. We have visited the Islwyn Inn several times in the past few years and have never been disappointed, however the tapas night on saturday was absolutely faultless. The inn itself is decorated to a high standard and provides a lovely ambience. The staff are all friendly, polite and can't do enough for you. The food was exceptional, as 'foodies' and lovers of tapas we have been to many restaurants and the islwyn inn's take on tapas cymru was up there with the best we have had. I very rarely leave reviews but couldn't not give the islwyn inn the praise they deserve. We will definitely be back and would recommend this lovely venue to anyone.On a side note, the covid restrictions they had in place made us feel very safe and reassured.Thanks all for a lovely evening.

Visited Friday 25.09.. Fell in love with this place the minute I walked through the door. The ambience was lovely with subtle (good) music on in the background which was a nice touch. Went for the Italian themed evening, Food came out and was amazing every single course!!! (pics added) Portion sizes huge but didn't mean they scrimped on the quality. Service good and bar staff/owners were pleasant to chat to. Trying the Sunday lunch next! Will come back here time and time again this is now my new local favourite. Oh and Watch the malbec way too easy to drink ..

We had beef dinners yesterday, 20th September. I must say it was exceptional. We have had quite a few takeaway meals during lock down. Without a doubt this was the best. I have just ordered for next Sunday. Highly recommended.

Last night we ordered from the Indian Takeaway menu and all I can say is well done Islwyn Inn!!! We had chicken bhuna and all the sides, the food was absolutely bursting with flavour and spices and you would never have thought this wasn’t from an Indian restaurant! I will certainly be ordering again, thank you for a lovely meal!

We’ve had a take away burger from here twice and both times it’s been amazing. There’s always more than enough food and the food is always still piping hot when we get home. The staff are very friendly.Would 100% recommend that anybody tries their takeaways!

Decided to have a takeaway to lift the lickdown blues. Checked out the Islwyn Inn and RESULT. Rob was doing a Mexican themed takeaway, well if this was going to be as good as his Sunday lunch it was a ‘no brainer’ So a quick call and order placed. Arrived to collect, Rob working in his usual relaxed manner, greeted by lovely Nicola and our meal arrives all carefully packed. Get home crack open a bottle of Malbec and tuck in to a delicious meal... happy days. And the dessert is waiting in the fridge for today. Looking forward to it. How he does it for the price beggars belief. Than you Rob and staff see you all soon. Tip ..... get someone else to drive and enjoy a tipple while you wait as long as you aren’t driving of course.

Lovely place, brilliant service and epic food. It was fully booked but they still found us a table which we are very grateful for. Even tho we only had the burger menu the burger was on the next level. Well impressed.... Service was spot on. Highly recommended. Also the cheese cake made me look at life in a different way, it sent me to paradise.... was better than sex They can take my money all day every day. Looking forward to the Sunday roast

Visited the restaurant last week for Burgers in the Bar, they were that nice we decided to have them as a takeaway this week. Great service as always, good setup in the current COVID arrangements, very safe, worth the visit. Sunday lunch is amazing too.

Another excellent Sunday lunch at the Islwyn Inn. This was our second visit since lockdown restrictions eased and have already booked again. Meats are tasty and succulent, vegetables are cooked to perfection and IF you have room, the deserts are plentiful and delicious. Nothing is too much trouble for any of the staff. Having recently sampled the most delicious takeaway Sunday lunch, we decided to treat ourselves to Dexter’s takeaway burgers. They were amazing accompanied with delicious seasoned fries and each burger “nationality” comes with an additional side - my husband had “The Welsh” which came with Glamorgan sausages on the side and I had “The Mexican” with patatas bravas quesadillas as a side. We will happily work our way through the menu! These extra details and the superb flavours make The Islwyn Inn the best restaurant around.

Top of our list for our first meal out after lockdown was the Islwyn Inn and as usual Rob's food was absolutely delicious. Can highly recommend the lamb three ways and can't wait to come back to try the other dishes on the menu. Nichola was absolutely charming and as helpful as ever. After having some fabulous take away Sunday Lunches during lockdown it was nice to be able to sit in Dexters Cwtch to try the burger menu and the selection of gin. The burgers did not disappoint, freshly hand made, with chunky chips in a basket and a variety of sides depending on the burger type. Will definitely be back.Tables were all arranged to observe the social distancing rules, with hand sanitiser on entry and exit.

We had the pleasure of holding our wedding day at the Islwyn Inn. From our very first meeting with Nichola we felt at ease that we had found the right place for our small family affair. The venue is stunning with a beautiful Welsh theme carried through the whole building from room to room.The food was amazing from the soup to dessert, the beef main was the best we have ever eaten anywhere.The staff so attentive and helpfull and nothing at all was too much trouble, will deffinatly visit again to eat or celebrate other family occasions. We have had a few takeaways the past few weeks, and they have been absolutely fabulous. The quality is exactly the same as the usual sit down service! Great value for money too, I think its actually been cheaper than usual!!Really looking forward to the reopening night now on 7th August.. Best food and service in the Blackwood area by a mile :)

A superb Sunday lunch this week. Quality of food was exceptional and gravy absolutely delicious. Beef, pork and turkey were all melt in the mouth. Takeaway service was well organised and very efficient. Staff are really friendly and nothing is too much trouble. Would highly recommend the Islwyn Inn and will definitely be returning.

had a takeaway sunday dinner last week, it was absolutely amazing, the standards and the unique taste of their sunday dinner is exactly the same as it would be sitting down, all of the staff are extremely polite and helpful, and the appropriate social distancing measures and rules are in place to protect everyone. the food was delicious, the soup was perfect, the taste is second to none, the dinner itself was incredible everything was cooked perfectly and tasted beautifully, couldn’t recommend the Islwyn Inn any more, it’s the best place around, highly highly recommended x

Had a fabulous Take away Sunday Lunch today. Food excellent as always. Our favourite mushroom and bacon starters with warm baguette, tender pork with crackling and stuffing, plenty of veg a and more than enough gravy. Disappointed with the recent takeaway we had for a group order as portion control was tight which left us short of gravy on two dinners. We ended up having to boil the kettle for Bisto to step in as an emergency. The accompanying vegetables wasn’t overly generous either which made the dinners look small. Won’t return now until the restaurant reopens.

Always used the restaraunt for years prior to lockdown. Never had a bad meal or service. Soon as I found out about take away dinners I couldn't grab my phone quick enough to book in with very polite staff over the phone. Had a time slot hardly had a chance to sit down the service was clean quick and professional with all the precautions in place due to covid. Food was amazing as per usual.

We’ve had dinner at the Inn quite a few times and usually as a large group. Today was our first time at trying their takeaway service (due to COVID-19) and we weren’t disappointed. The food was just as good - i had my reservations that it wouldn’t ‘travel’ well. I think the clue is that you take your own dinner plates, they plate up the meat and roastie (and Yorkshire if you’re having beef) and you have the side dishes and gravy in separate containers. This means you can dish up fresh when you get home and have your own portions. The food is excellent and it’s very reasonably priced. We also had dessert. Definitely recommend it, without doubt. And it’s best to make early reservations to avoid disappointment

Where do I begin, ***** for a start, Islwyn Inn went above and beyond for our takeaway Mothers Day lunch today. I have been wanting to go here for ages but things kept getting in the way. Well today we had the most beautiful lunch from the Leek and Potato Soup to the Duck and Orange Pate (even providing bread for the soup and crostini and butter for the pate. We then had a very tasty cooked dinner, pan fried chicken and others had beef (so tender), the gravy was amazing and even provided horse radish sauce (simply thought of everything) the desserts looked and tasted absolutely amazing Honeycomb cheesecake or Apple and pear crumble with cream or custard, stunning food we will most certainly be visiting when we are able to in the future Nicola x

Four of us have just returned from Sunday lunch at this recently refurbished, redecorated grand old pub.The decor has altered somewhat since our last visit, for the best it must be said. While it was always comfortable, it is now very stylish, modern and---- comfortable.The welcome from all the staff was warm and friendly, including Rob, the owner/chef.The atmosphere was buzzing with most tables occupied by diners at various stages of their meals, lots of laughter and happy noises surrounded us as we were seated.Now, I have always thought that my mum's cooking could not be beaten, but, this Sunday lunch was as good as any we have ever eaten, anywhere ---- bar none!We can't recommend it highly enough.Be advised though, book early, especially for Sunday lunch.

We arrived as a party of 10 around 7pm as our table was booked for 7.30pm, at 8.15pm we were still waiting to be seated despite the place being near empty.The whole place was very very cold and we noticed the people on the table next to us still had their coats on in the restaurant during the meal so we were obviously not the only ones feeling the chill.The menu presented to us was not the one we were shown on line, there were only about 4 choices, 3 of the 4 were served with pea friccasee whatever that is, there were no healthy, vegetarian or fish options, only meat, very poor selection, most of us went for the burger and chips, the chips were nice, but the burger tasted peppery and the brioche bun was char grilled (burnt, blackened whatever you want to call it) whether you wanted it or not, I'm sure most people don't want burnt food by choice, I certainly didn't, starters didn't arrive on the table until gone 9pm for those who ordered them, again very poor selection, it was gone 10 before dessert arrived, again I was very underwhelmed and throughout the whole evening service was terribly slow, no one came to check on us or asked if the food was OK, food was over priced for what it was and the drinks were also very expensive, all in all I was very unimpressed and wonder how this business is still running, won't be returning truly awful!

Table ready on time, pleasant atmosphere and food very tasty. Amount of vegetables provided was somewhat sparse for 6 of us. Also, we weren't asked if we required things which would have enhanced our meals. Eg, horseradish with the beef,cranberry sauce with the Turkey and apple sauce with the pork.We also asked for a coffee which never arrived.

Would highly recommend. Food was fabulous had the chicken and the pork. Service was friendly. Relaxed atmosphere. Would definitely visit again.

Thoroughly enjoyed Burns night. 4 courses all beautifully cooked & seasoned. Never tried Haggis - it was amazing! Especially with Thyme gravy! Angus beef rump melted in your mouth. Cranachan trifle was a light refreshing desert. Good size portions & well worth £25 per head. Attention to detail at this evening was exceptional. Tartan table runner, Burns “Address to a Haggis” poem on a scroll served with the Haggis, Scottish flags etc. The meal started about 7:40 & we finished about 10:15, a relaxed evening & good timing between courses. Service was outstanding- the girls led by Nichola got all the meals out like clockwork. Would thoroughly recommend going to one of their themed evenings. Thank you we had a lovely evening.

From start to finish it was perfect. Alex the barman was very friendly and very efficient. The waitress took us table very polite. Helped me with my walker. Loads of room unlike some restaurants cramped in. Loads of choices starters, mains and puddings all fantastic. All first class.

Came for my mother's birthday very nice place staff were very friendly. We had Sunday lunch which was very good and plenty of it, dessert was lovely very reasonably priced I think about £3pp difference from toby carvery and worth every penny

Having previously enjoyed a delicious Burns Dinner themed-evening, we decided to return to celebrate my birthday. It didn’t disappoint - superb food with first-class attention to detail in taste and presentation. Great selection of gins, wines and beers. A lovely relaxing atmosphere with excellent service. So happy this little gem is right on our doorstep!

Never eat too much local to me but this place was beautiful Small menu which I love and the food was cooked perfect. Nothing to complain about just ticked all the boxes

Our family lunch at the Islwyn Inn was just what we’d hoped it would be. 11 of us (6 adults, 5 children ranging in age from 10 to 4) were in the Breconshire Room, which was the perfect size for our party. We were away from the main diners which meant that we were more relaxed and not concerned about the younger ones irritating other customers. Added to that the lovely food and the great, friendly service from the staff and it all made for a very enjoyable experience. Thanks so much - we will be back!

Visited here Sunday 23/06/19. Thee was 6 of us two friends from Guildford 1st time visit. Service was excellent the food exquisite as usual Rob and the team smash it every time. Must mention Alex doing a sterling job on the bar in Dexter's Cwtch. 5* every visit. Sunday lunch is a must. You'll not be disappointed. Booking recommended.

My husband and I went here last week, we had a lovely welcome and felt relaxed as soon as we walked in. The food was amazing and the staff were really friendly particularly Alex and Nicola. Had evening meal on friday. Fantastic, top quality food. Excellent and friendly service. Best meals we ever had.

Visited for first time Saturday 31st March for a birthday celebration and had a table for 2. On arrival, 4 people were waiting at bar/ reception area whilst “ mine host” was chatting to ,I assume a regular, and completely ignored the 4 people ( and us now) for a good 5 minutes. When he came to serve, there was no friendliness in his attitude and my first impression of the islwyn Inn was not a good one. We were told to sit in bar area and menus were brought to us with the info.that the salmon was not available. We were then showed into the restaurant and shoehorned into a very dark corner on the “ stage” in close proximity to a party of approx 10 who , naturally,were quite noisy. It was so dark at the table that I had to ask for a candle for the table. The food was brought and plonked on table without us being asked if we needed any sauces etc. So I had to call waitress to request some water and sauces. By this time the room had filled with several other parties and the noise now was such that we could hardly hear ourselves speak so we ate and left. As said in the title, the food was excellent but the staff and “mine host” would benefit from learning a few tips on dealing with customers. Certainly not a place to go for a quiet celebratory meal.

Just got home from a brill evening at this excellent pub restaurant. The meals for the four people were spot on and the atmosphere was exceptional. The chap running the bar wouldn’t do enough to ensure our night was great. All in all if you want a great meal in a friendly environment then you won’t do better

A very welcoming bar/restaurant. The menu wasn't extensive but the food was freshly cooked and delicious. The lady that served us was so friendly and made us feel very welcome. If we were staying in the area again we would go back.

First time I had been here. Three of us had Steak-it was absolutely superb-the best I have had in many years. Will be back again.

I feel very lucky to have this amazing place on my doorstep .. I love the decor, the quirky little touches, the staff and service is warm and welcoming and the food is awesome ... I eat slowly here because I want to enjoy every mouthful ... four of us visited, we had a combination of starters, mains and five desserts amongst the four of us :-) My boeuf bourguignon was so tender, everything was perfect .. my friends had the salmon and mussels and used this dessert spoons not to leave the dreamy creamy sauce, I’d have tasted it given the chance :-) ... the honeycomb cheesecake is to die for ! Order it please !

When people talk about 'hidden gems' its not until you find one that you begin to understand what that means. The Islwyn Inn most definately falls into that category. The building is beautiful and characterfull and the owners have clearly tried to retain its Welsh Valley history as a former school house, hall, and miners building. However, the contemporary elements mixed with the typically Welsh paraphernalia create a relaxed informal ambience both in the bar and in the dining room. So, with such pleasant surroundings in which to dine, lets turn to the food. One word. Fantastic! Not fancy or pretentious. Just great simple food cooked really well and presented beautifully. The menu is not extensive and it doesn't need to be because what's on offer is done well. I had a rib eye steak with diane sauce which was served with green beans, sauted onions and chips. The steak was tender and moist and cooked perfectly to my taste and I could cut through it like butter. Salmon and muscles and slow coooked beef borginion were the other dishes within our party all of which were cooked well and enjoyed. The cooked camembert starter was also fantastic and just enough. The deserts were gorgeous too. Lemon roulade, caramel cheesecake and raspberry trifle were sampled and all enjoyed immensely. Everything we ordered was presented well. Portions were of a good size and the flavours of everything we ate were mouthwateringly delightful. It also has to be said that besides the great food, the ambiance and the reasonable prices, the staff were also lovely too. We were made to feel welcome and staff were pleasant, warm and attentive giving us time to order and eat and no rush through courses. All in all we had a great experience and would certainly recommend The Islwyn Inn for an intimate evening for couples, a meal with friends or larger groups all of whom.can be accommodated in the large spacious dining room. All in all, a great place to dine. Go try it!

Heard about The Islwyn Inn for a while but never visited. First time today for Sunday Lunch and certainly won't be the last.

Visited last night for one of their themed meal nights, Six nation dinner. It was a 6 course menu & the food was excellent, well worth the money! We all really enjoyed it! Will definitely be returning.

We visited on Saturday evening and had a meal from the Bistro menu. The medallions of pork in a dijonaise sauce and the lamb cassoulet were both gorgeous. Both came with dauphinoise potatoes - a personal favourite! The waitress and barman were welcoming and friendly and there were a range of Welsh beers and a cider on draught. A lovely meal and we'll definitely be back!

A well deserved five stars for this wonderful restaurant (Sunday lunch you have to book sometimes weeks ahead), bar and tapas bar. I have never had a bad meal, the staff are lovely and the international evenings are a treat in the lovely village of Wyllie.

We picked the islwyn inn as a venue for our wedding reception after having some 5 star meals in the restaurant again Rob and Nicola and Alex pulled out all the stops to make this a momentous special day. Highly recommended and can't thank them enough

We were at a private party to celebrate a wedding and wow how amazing it was, the Christmas decorations were fabulous, the food out of this world and the staff couldn’t do enough for us, they were so accommodating and welcoming. Can’t wait to go back!
