Love eating here. We have never been disappointed with the food, wine and service. The atmosphere is informal and cosy. All food is prepared fresh and from scratch. There’s the choice of set menu or a La carte. It’s not expensive given the exceptional quality of food and service. This was our 4th visit as It’s just under 100 mile round trip for us. But certainly won’t be our last 🥰

Ian Brown continues to produce wonderful plates of food. Eight of us met for a celebration dinner, choosing widely from the menu over 3 courses and loving every plateful. You can't fault any aspect of this small restaurant, nice ambience created by an attentive Sheila who makes everyone feel at home. What a pity they are retiring when the business is sold. They will be missed. Enjoy while you still can!

Visited with my partner, he chose from the set menu & I chose from the main menu. Both of our meals were amazing, exceptionally tasty & very good value for money. The main meal was ok but sparse. Also there could have been no more than a tablespoon worth of custard put into a very small white dish. However the reason for this one star review is the disregard for the safety of customers and any lack of reasonable compensation. My fruit crumble was cooked in a solid metal dish and then served directly to me from the oven. I was not informed that the dish would be scalding hot and I subsequently burnt my hand which was very very painful. The waitress did apologise and give me ice to cool it down, but the pain nevertheless spoiled the rest of my lunch (and afternoon). When we asked for the bill, not a penny was taken off as compensation. The issue here is not about the money, but the principle of treating customers with respect after causing such an injury. In retrospect, we should have refused to pay for at least half the meal, but we paid in full and left. We will not be back!

Visited this busy little neighbourhood restaurant for a midweek dinner with family. The menu choices were great. Two of us ate from the set menu while two ate from the regular a la carte menu. The choices on both menus were imaginative and appealing. The food was very well cooked, flavoursome and great value for money. I can certainly recommend the Stovies with Brown Sauce starter and Haddock Thermidor main. One of our family is lactose intolerant and the chef varied a dessert from the set menu to meet his needs. This was much appreciated and typical of the friendly, professional service. We have already booked a return visit.

Midweek birthdays are much less fun than weekend bashes. We visited Ian Brown's cozy little bistro as a bit of a surprise, if low key, birthday bash for the boss and we're glad we did. The set menu, which is available out with the weekend, was compact but had a decent variety. 'Management' opted for the little peppers stuffed with goats cheese. I was delighted with my choice of sweetpotato soup. In a rare moment of unanimity we had the delicious haddock thermidor. This was complemented by an interesting assembly of sauteed vegetables. The fish was not only skillfully cooked but was also beautifully presented. There are 30 odd covers and it was pleasantly busy for a mid week evening. The waiting staff got that balance of friendliness and professionalism just right. I can't understand why we hadn't visit before now, but we will be back.

Starter - excellent haddock tart with plum sauce. Dessert, lovely pannacotta. Main - truly awful braised beef, a small extremely dried-out bit of beef, like leather, I binned most of it (and I don't bin much!). Braised beef should come apart easily. Ian Brown is our local place with a very good reputation but serious thought is needed about what should / shouldn't be offered for reheating at home.

We've been going to Ian Brown's ever since we moved into the area in 2012. The dine-in experience is very special - so cosy, warm and welcoming. Even after just one or two visits, Sheila and all the waiting team (who reassuringly are mainly the same people now as 8 years ago) always remembered our names, faces, favourites etc. But even now, with the delivery service, it's Sheila who delivers it personally, stops for a natter etc. And whether dining in or out, the food is of the most consistently high standard of any restaurant I could mention. It's delicious, it's generous, it's varied. I'm going to stop now as my mouth is watering!

We booked in for Christmas lunch last week 19th December, and it was delightful! The meal started with some fresh bread whilst waiting for the starters. Between the four of us we sampled spiced pear with black pudding bon bons, haggis neeps & tatties, and king prawn thermidor. All were delicious and well presented. Moving on to the main event - I had the shin of beef with crushed horseradish potatoes served with the nicest carrots I've ever had. Dining companions had roast turkey with all the trimmings and roast partridge crown. Everything was great and clean plates all round. After two lovely courses, we felt duty bound to try out the desserts and we weren't disappointed! We were warned the plum tartin would be a twenty minute wait, and it was well worth it. Juicy plums on delicate pasty with creamy vanilla ice cream - delicious. Thumbs up for the other pudding too.No drinking as we were going back work, but would definitely return for an evening meal in the future. The restaurant was quiet on the day we dined, but there was a steady stream of people coming in to book tables and buy vouchers. Below is the spiced pear salad and shin of beef.

Good menu with excellent wine list. Quite small inside and some tables a little cramped if adjacent diners sit too far back from their table! But apart from that the decor is clean modern and bright. Tomato and red pepper soup reported to be excellent. The roast beef was awarded a “best ever” plaudit. I had walnut celery and Brie salad which was delicious. Followed that with chicken and mushroom Brodie which really hit the spot!! Served with the best chips I have ever tasted, no hint of fat or oil and salted with sea salt. This restaurant/ chef uses high quality ingredients and takes care in the cooking, seasoning and presentation.

First time in Ian Browns and first of ll we loved the food it was delicious, the service was good and it was nice to get greeted by the owners wife, something rare these days. We were out celebrating a 20th Anniversary, but unfortunately with such a crammed in table setting we found the volume (atmosphere to some) rise beyond tolerable levels. We were also so close together that we could hear other people shouting to be heard. Overall this spoilt our night and would not be quick to go back.

Cannot believe this place is 1km from our house (lived in the area all my life) and we only went last night for the first time! What can I say that has not already been said? Very tasty food, excellent drink, brilliant service. We would also consider it good value for the high quality all round. Bigger inside that it looks from the outside! Will definitely go again!

Food, wine, ambience and service all good and not too expensive. £16 for 3 course set menu and a good choice of wines by the glass. Friendly service and this restaurant seems to focus on getting it right rather than 'looking good guru food'. We'll be back.

We selected this restaurant having read all the great reviews on TA and were looking forward to dinner here. Firstly, there was the lukewarm welcome. Not unpleasant but slightly uncomfortable. It wasn’t until later when a younger member of staff came on duty and expressed an interest in whether or not we were enjoying the food that we felt at all valued as customers. The food was okay but we expected so much more than ‘okay’. The tables are very close together and as the evening got busier, we were finding it difficult to hear each other speak. We won’t be coming back as it was a disappointing experience overall.

Enjoyed a marvellous pre-Christmas lunch on Sunday at a table for four. Food was tremendous, particularly the beef main although everyone was delighted with their choices for each course. Great value for money.

My friend recommended this place. I went with a friend without a booking. They had a table. Small but very cosy restaurant. Easy to miss from the outside. Menu wasn’t huge which is always a good song. I opted for the sliced fillet steak over Stornaway black pudding starter and my friend had the duck livers. Both of us were delighted. Then I had the chicken with haggis croquettes and my friend a sirloin steak. The chicken was juicy and full of flavour. The steak equally so. We shared baked Alaska for desert. Also glorious. The food really was outstanding.

My first visit was for a family meal after others had raved about the food. I was not disappointed. Nice atmosphere in small surroundings - no more than 40 seats. Varied menu with daily specials that I chose from for appetizer and main (monkfish and venison). Finished off with sticky toffee pudding - wine was well chosen from a fair list and was not over-the-top expensive.
