Hungry Bear in Isle of Wight

Such a lovely place. The food was incredible, and the service was amazing. I wanted the pork belly special, but I was informed that they were sold out, but then was offered an alternative pork belly made by the chef just for me. It was super flavorful, cooked perfectly. I cannot recommend this place enough.

The food for four people was so good it was off the chart!!

We had a lovely Sunday roast at The Crown and Bear. Went for the half a chicken option and ended up with chicken breast, and the roast potatoes were a little soggy, hence the 4 stars. That said, I would go again.

Amazing lunch at the Hungry Bear. Had the sharing platter for 3 bears and was a feast. Meat, veg, potatoes, Yorkshire and gravy couldn't fault at all. One of the best roasts we have had in a long time. A really welcoming and friendly place. We will deffo be back!!

Had a lovely meal with the family; the food was outstanding and only outshone by the wonderful and attentive service we received. The portions are huge, well cooked, hot to the table. We had individual roasts but also saw the mouth watering platters passing by our table. It's all about the roasts and guest service.

What a fantastic Sunday roast. We'll cooked meats and plenty of vegetables and gravy. Our first visit today but will definitely come again. Great service and good value too.

We were so excited to try a roast here after seeing the pictures and reviews only to be absolutely let down the food was absolutely awful nothing was fresh apart from the veg and beef, pork chops 🫣 weren't even cooked properly roast potatoes were under cooked or frozen just like the rest of the food. The gravy was like water and on top of that placed all over the food before coming out of the kitchen which shouldn't be done as like Mt partner some people can not stand it so his food was absolutely even before he got to try it. Safe to say it was a huge let down and we won't be coming back

Visited this excellent restaurant twice - the best roast dinner I have had since I was last here two years ago. BIG BIG portions and everything excellently cooked. No visit to the IOW is complete without a visit to the Bear. Does really good puddings too - not that I had room for one. Important note - now in BRADING not as shown in some old guide books. It is not too far from the lovely old church and next to that is the municipal car park.

We booked Wednesday evening 20th September for a meal to The Hungry Bear that I had seen online before we arrived for our week's holiday on The IOW. It was going to be the highlight meal of the week. So we dolled ourselves up. Even though it was very heavy drifting rain and wind blowing a like hurricane, we travelled 25 mins to it. Had to park in a car park and pay, 2 mins walk away from the restaurant. In that time, we were blown to bits and our clothes were soaked. Got to the restaurant, and there was a closed notice on the door, which said the porkies did not arrive with a smiling emoji. They might find it funny but i can assure you, we certainly did not. When I booked over the phone, they asked me for my mobile number. So why the hell didn't they ring me to inform us it was closed? The worst bit was that we then had to find somewhere else for dinner. It's not easy in a storm, and you usually have to book everywhere. We did get in somewhere, but the car park for that was flooded, and to cap it all, that is what ruined our shoes. I am fuming. We don't believe in letting anyone down by not turning up even in such dreadful weather conditions, so I believe they should have let us know, when they decided to close the restaurant. 🤬🤬🤬 xxx

I came here two years ago and loved the food so had to visit again. They now have a more structured menu (two years ago they had some daily specials) but I did not need to venture away from the roast which is what they are famous for. It was still as good as it was a couple of years ago. Staff were friendly and accommodated my needs.

We had two delicious roasts tonight, food is tasty and healthy, enjoyed the nut roast, polite and caring service, the restaurant is beautifully decorated and clean, thank you chef for serving us dinner even if you were fully booked! We were like two hungry bears! 😉

Best place on the island for a Sunday lunch or dinner. Also child friendly with super nice staff. Good. Had the trio of meats beef was my favourite.

Absolutely brilliant a full homemade roast midweek (and sunday) booking essential. Full of flavour and a full plate. What's not to like. Good quality food cooked a traditional way with plenty of roast potatoes, parsnip, carrots with a huge substantial Yorkshire pudding (not filled with air so no chance of your yorkshire flying off your plate!) Just the sort of roast my mum and nan would cook full of flavour and lots of rich gravy! A real treat for me as I'm the one cooking the roast at home. Nice friendly atmosphere. Obviously all places have slip ups and I did notice the table next to me were waiting a long while for their meals but we had no problem. The owner even has a roast delivery option on the island. Handy for locals and holiday makers self catering without transport. It's not always easy to get a roast dinner in holiday season so look no further Hungry Bear Brading is a must. Wish we had a Hungry Bear local too.

Nice restaurant , contemporary and modern, albeit tables close together. For roast meals, very good, but for children the alternatives are few and too rich to enjoy ( the worse macaroni cheese were we confirmed by our 12 year old - who left most of the serving). Dogs, allowed in , but why not sit in separate area, the couple next to us were invaded by a hound whose owners deemed it acceptable fir there pooch to keep going under the other guests table of sitting up begging. We were fortunate to leave just before the issue got heated. Roast good, not good for children and beware you may have a dog n very close proximity

The atmosphere was extremely welcoming and we were made to feel so welcome it was like we were regulars. The staff were so friendly and attentive and the quality of the food and drink was exceptional as well as extremely good value for money . Our waitress was so attentive and I highly recommend her as she genuinely cared about ensuring we were looked after and had a great deal of pride in doing her job well and I can’t not praise her enough (unfortunately I did not get her name our booking was in the name of Jeanette table for 2 @ 18:00 6/9/23). I will be recommending you to absolutely everyone and will be including a recommendation in our information pack in our rental property.

Thus 5 star review is given begrudgingly as I don't want everyone to find out about this gem! Everything from ambience, service, portion sie and taste was amazing. We will definitely return.

First time eating here and it was awesome definitely going back.

Visited with my Brother for Sunday lunch. The overall experience was excellent. The food was fantastic and we both said it was probably the best roast dinner we had ever had. We had the sharing platter and it was delicious. Most of the diners seemed to be having the same and looked as happy as we were. The staff were very welcoming and the ambiance great.

We used to love the Hungry Bear but sadly we didn’t enjoy our meal there this evening. Perhaps the change to a ‘roast house’ just isn’t for us. We didn’t order any roasts (it was a warm late summer evening so no-one felt like one). Our teenage children thought the ribs tasted like churros (perhaps too much cinnamon?), the steak we ordered rare was medium/well done (although tasty) and the crumble was inedible (bizarrely it tasted like gravy - I think the cream might have been on the turn). The waffles were a hit though. The staff were very sweet but over attentive (we were asked about 10 times if our meal was ok). Please bring the old Hungry Bear back! It used to be a cosy and reliable eaterie.

It was ok…we were expecting more based on the reviews. Be warned first that the only parking is up the hill in a separate car park - cash only!! We don’t carry cash normally, but luckily did that day. As a Roast House, I was hoping the Hungry Bear had proper roast chicken: crunchy skin, juicy leg meat on the bone with wings etc - was just a standard skinned chicken breast like anywhere which was a huge let down for the adults. The roast potatoes were very overcooked but we ate them through hunger. A little overpriced in all, but that’s what we always say when it’s not brilliant. As a local islander, we just won’t visit again. Shame.

Googled for a birthday meal while on the isle of white. What a great find. The food was excellent and the staff so welcoming. Was no rush to leave the restaurant. Would return again definitely.
