We celebrated a birthday at Hunan and it was incredible! Every course was bursting with flavour and there was so much variation in their shared plates. The staff were very friendly and attentive, they even brought out a special dessert for the birthday girl! They made the whole experience so much fun and memorable. If you're looking for a delicious and unique dining experience with lots of wonderful courses, I highly recommend Hunan!

We dined here for a birthday dinner - had the 18 course tasting menu - only knowing that there is no 'menu'. The staff ask for things that you don't eat and allergies. We were blown away by the quality and variety of dishes. The black cod, pork in a bag and chicken soup was exceptional. The staff are friendly, engaging, fun and helpful. Worth the price tag. Come here if you can handle not knowing what may land on your plate next. Not sure if you're veggie/vegan/have major dietary restrictions.

Mixed feelings with this place, there were som great dishes that were definitely a standout: eg. the soups were amazing, the lightly battered fried beans were great, the beef, prawns and cod were great too. However, i didn’t enjoy some dishes like the mussels and the pig ear. While the speciality of this place is to try alot of food for a reasonable price, i did wish they focused on serving 10 great dishes instead of focusing so much on quantity. It almost reminded me of a Chinese wedding banquet. Would recommend this place if you want to try many chinese dishes all at once, they may not all be 10/10, but it’s a good variety.

Did the dinner tasting here and had high expectations. My friend and I are both Chinese / Taiwanese and found the dishes to be extremely lacking (except for a select few fish dishes). We felt as though we were just paying a high price for small portions of mediocre food. Should have been a sign when we walked in and saw a ton of white people which is never a great sign for a Chinese restaurant. You’re better off going to any restaurant in Chinatown. They couldn’t even get a soup dumpling right.

16 starters, 1 main 1 dessert and about 3 hours. All the food was excellent and varied. We opted for the duck pancakes as the main. The dessert wasn’t too my liking but I think I’d feel that way about most Chinese deserts. Service was welcoming. Most of the courses come out more or less back to back. There was a whole we felt we were forgotten about but was made up for with an apology and complimentary glass of champagne. Would definitely recommend Hunan for a Chinese food experience!

An interesting dining experience. 18 small plates of very well cooked mostly classic Chinese dishes that you would find in authentic Chinese restaurants. There is no menu so each dish was a pleasant surprise. The quality of the ingredients is apparent. Except for a couple of dishes like the fried beans and the mussels in black bean sauce you pretty much only get one or two mouthfuls of each dish. The concept is great if there are only a few of you and like variety. They were very good about substituting dishes to accommodate dietary requirements. A couple of dishes like the chicken and the main course of fried rice and steamed sea bass were only above average. The black cod in a reduced vinegar sauce was a highlight. Service was good.

We visited on a Saturday evening. It’s a relatively small venue. The fixed price menu was priced at £95 each, and comprised of 16 starters (often bite sized) plus 1 main and 1 dessert. We were a group of 3 with differing dietary requirements and the restaurant handled this with ease, providing individual substitute dishes where applicable. The food was excellent! A great variety of dishes on offer (including scallops, monkfish, steak, duck, lamb…) and the flavours were consistently good. I liked that there was a bit of spice in most dishes. I also liked the flexibility of the menu, whereby a couple of extra items we asked for were provided free of charge. Service was friendly and the meal was well paced. The bill for the 3 of us came to £556, of which £230 was spent on drinks. This was an excellent meal overall with a differentiated menu concept. I look forward to a repeat visit.

London Food 💯 When people say that London has mediocre food, they’re most often referring to British food, known for their fried, mashed and more bland foods But London itself is a metropolitan city with cuisine reflective of its worldwide influence and influx on many cultures While Indian cuisine is most well-known (and represented from food to tea culture), I also found Thai and Chinese cuisine excellent Hunan is a unique restaurant in which the menu is up to the chef and features upwards of 20 dishes While their name refers to a region of China, the cooking is more reflective of a broader region including Cantonese, Sichuan, and Hunan flavors Each bite was distinguished by high quality ingredients, bold spices and flavors (though nothing is spicy), and stellar wok hei (or heat) 📷 Leave-it-to-us menu £94.80 per person 📍Hunan (London, UK)

Huge number of sympathetically served dishes, each perfectly prepared. Were there too many types of meat and fish and seafood thrown together? This is an experience, not a place to repeatedly visit, but if you have a large appetite and great company this would be the concert version of food. 18 courses - they're not kidding. It's a test of how long you can last. The kitchen ensure there is always food on the table, so unlike a French meal with sizeable breaks between course, this is a 4 hour food extravaganza. I suspect we only survived because we were vegetarian and a lot of the dishes were salad-like and light. The use of the cornflour-based sauce seemed like a repeating pattern but there were some real gems in the meal like a water chestnut preparation, a warm salad wrap, a handmade noodles with soya sprouts and a green aubergine with a mild ginger and chilli seasoning. Had it not been a cold night, we would have walked a few miles after this well-spent evening.

PROS: - Food was incredible, not crazy expensive, and you will definitely be FULL - Staff and service were fantastic! Servers were knowledgeable and friendly - Overall vibe of the restaurant was perfect, a great place for a special occasion CONS: - We were offered two glasses of champagne as an anniversary celebration drink… that we then had to pay for… - The duck main was okay, unfortunately not to the same standard as the other courses - Service charge is 15% due to the number of courses and knowledge required from staff (as per Hunan’s response below), which makes sense but diners should be made aware of!

I have been to this restaurant several times the last 12 years and my experience was always great! They have a unique concept of a taster menu for all. However as of my experience tonight, I was very disappointed, pretty much all the food was below average and it seems like there have been some internal changes with the kitchen staff, as the food was incomparable to my previous visits. Whilst some portions of the dinner set meal were great, I unfortunately felt disappointed by the majority of the courses. Most courses are relatively boring, similar to a typical British Chinese restaurant. We had 18 courses, and where able to choose between two choices for the main course. Duck or Fish. Unfortunately we decided for the Duck which was similar to a Tesco Beijing Duck. Dry and overcooked. The Soup Dumpling had no soup and the skin was tough. The service felt rushed and unprofessional. While we were on our main course the staff decided to hang out close to us, chat and clean up the cutlery. It felt like the staff was just waiting for us to leave even though we arrived at the advised times and on a set meal. We will not visit again.

Great food, bad service The food was great, you also get to try lots of different dishes. But the service wasn’t that good, it was quite disappointing actually. It was fine until we were meant to be getting our main. The starters came pretty quickly, you get the next dish quickly after you finish. But the waitress seemed to have forgotten to put in the kitchen order for our main. We were the first ones there and had our starters before the other guests arrived, and were ahead of them but then once starters were done they all got asked about their mains and by the time they were almost finished eating their mains (they had a different waiter), the waitress then remembered to ask us about our main choices (you can either get duck or sea bass or pay extra for lobster), then after probably an hour our mains were brought out, I then noticed another table had noodles with their seabass, the waitress brought out my sea bass and then remembered about the side dish that’s meant to come with it and said “oh you didn’t want any rice or noodles with yours right”?? No she forgot to ask! Was I meant to just have sea bass on its own for my main? The more senior guy in a suit (maybe the manager) wasn’t good either, we asked for a second drink which got charged to our bill but was never brought to us, it wasn’t even busy at the time we asked him, he put it on the system then was just chilling by the bar, he seemed to have forgotten about it. This isn’t the type of service you’d expect to have when you go to a Michelin star restaurant (not sure if it still is but it was back in the day). Overall the food was good but service was extremely disappointing, ended up wasting so much time waiting for our main because the waitress just forgot to put in the order in the kitchen and forgot to ask which dish I wanted. The only staff that was actually decent was the Asian waiter, the other staff didn’t seem friendly or welcoming at all and all seemed to lack experience. Point still stands great food.

The menu changes weekly and is designed to the diners taste and dietary preferences so there is always something to eat for someone. The course begjns with 12 courses of starters- everything from seafood, meat, game is served. The 13th course is the main course- when I dined I had an option of either Sea Bass or Crispy Duck. We had the Sea Bass. It was served alongside the house noodles & house fried rice- both of which are sublime. Noodles are hand pulled and fresh. The 14th course was dessert- toffeed apple and banana with ice cream. The food was spot on, and service was personal and very efficient. I came here with some friends to celebrate a birthday. Our guest of honor chose this place and we were excited to enjoy an incredible feast. The premise of this restaurant is that the chef decides what you eat, whipping up an 18-course meal. They were very accommodating of a gluten allergy and a shellfish allergy at our table, without making those of us without allergies miss out on anything. Most dishes were fine, but nothing was memorable or special. Even the crab and lobster main courses were subpar. I picked mostly shell out of some soggy not-so-crispy noodles. The clams were very fresh and delicious, but I found most of the meat dishes (venison, lamb, pork in a bag) to be gristly, greasy, and fried and/or coated in starchy sauce to disguise the subpar quality. The pace of the multi-course meal was way off. Those with allergies were inundated with 4-5 plates of food all at once, which was overwhelming and crowded the table. Meanwhile, those of us without allergies were left waiting awkwardly long periods for the next small dish to come (there were 16 or 17 small dishes to arrive before the main course). We were sat at a long table, and one of the waitresses had a tendency to throw plates and silverware at us, so they clunked on the table. She sloppily poured wine, getting splashing it all over the table and down the glass. She also shouted what the ingredients of each dish were, which we could barely hear because the music was blaring too loudly. Then she would pace furiously back and forth next to our table, waiting for us to finish our plates so she could clear them. She was probably a nice person but she seemed stressed out and unfortunately she made for a not relaxing dining environment. I wouldn’t recommend this over any other Chinese restaurant. I found the multiple small plates to be a hinderance. There were just too many courses - they filled us up completely before the main had arrived, and they felt a bit repetitive. They’d do better to cut the menu down a bit. And for the love of god turn down the music and stop shouting at your customers.

Mixed feeling. Very reasonable price, £65 per head, for a quality prefixed menu lunch. But, it is not a top flight Chinese restaurant. A top flight restaurant would use better ingredients. It seems to me the restaurant has dozens of dishes and recycles them over time. The first course soup dish is the best one. The rest of the course is decent. I’ve to say wines are very reasonably priced, or even cheap. 2011 Ornellaia is 290£. Anywhere else would be more than 400£.

Very disappointing experience. In fact it was so disappointing that both my partner and I could not wait for the dinner service to end - we did not leave half way because we were hoping for the next courses to redeem the disappointment or at least prove us wrong in some way that this restaurant leaves up to its reputation. I must point out that both my partner and I are regular dinners out and about at establishments at varying levels and we both appreciate and understand what should be expected accordingly. The extended set menu sounded fun and something that would appeal to me because I get to try out most dishes is small portions - I have to say that most starters and main course were not freshly prepared and mostly reheated. The order of the dishes was not carefully planned and in my opinion it came in odd timings with varying and lengthy intervals in between servings. There were 18 dishes and the 2 / 3 sauces were ‘recycled’ in between dishes. At some point all fish dishes with sauce just start tasting the same… most fish and meat dishes were just slightly over cooked and not a dish has stood out. The food presentation was acceptable, nothing remotely entertaining to the eyes - at least the plates were consistently matching. The service was not good. The waiters were not attentive at all, we had to call out for water reorders, which is something you would at least expect from a restaurant with this price range. The waiters had no finesse, they would barge in whenever they were ready to serve the next dish interrupting out conversations without any manners. My partner and I are very comfortable with chopsticks, but not once we were asked if we needed cutlery. I understand this is Chinese cuisine, but it cannot be expected that everyone is comfortable with chopsticks so the courtesy of offering cutlery needs to happen. The restaurant is set in a lovely part of London and the ground floor town house decor is trying to resemble a finer, cleaner and quieter version of a similar Chinese restaurant found in a western Chinatown. I appreciate the intention but the ambience has once again ruined by the staff. Narrow space as expected but the staff clearly had no awareness of the way they should conduct themselves, at the end of the night they were just conglomerated in the narrow passage and chatting away. Overall, this was not a good experience - not for the money paid and even if it was half the price I would still think it is not worth it and will not recommend it to anyone. There are many better places in London for Chinese cuisine at a much higher standard and without the price tag.

You will be sitting for a long meal so make sure you give yourself plenty of time. We sat at 12:40 for lunch and didn’t leave until 3:15 PM. Great if you have the time to relax. The lunch is 12 courses but honestly they gave us 20 courses! We felt very full afterwards even though they were all small sharing plates. As for the food itself, there were some clear favorites from the table (the intro soup, the fried green beans and the fried cod) but some of the dishes with meat including the beef was lacking in flavor and the lamb was over cooked. The duck course was a bit dry as well. The dessert of red bean pastry and matcha ice cream was just right and not too sweet, I liked my banana fritter with ice cream. All in all, got more courses than we had expected and some very notable dishes but just enough subpar dishes (mostly the red meat dishes) to drag it down to four stars. Also service was nice but a bit inexperienced.

Lovely place, fantastic service, lots of laughs and the food is the best we ever had - including Beijing, Shenzen, Hong Kong. This is a must visit for anyone lucky enough

Overall, the quality does not feel substantially better than the average Asian restaurant. However, the asking price suggests a high-end restaurant. Very bad value for money. It felt like a ripe off.

J'avais lu un bon commentaire dans un blog œnophilique. En fait, la carte des vins est classée en dépit du bon sens et comprend de nombreux items en réalité épuisés. Pour la nourriture, est est correcte (et surtout copieuse), sans plus.

I have known Micheal Peng and his family for over 30 years. The food is impeccable. Michael's father redesigned Chinese food that when tasted is second to none. It is a joy to write this review. Take care of yourself Styf and look after the family and business your talents are never taken for granted.👍

We went for the 18 course dinner. Cost about 80 pounds pp (+40 pounds pp for the drinks). The food was delicious, but the plates came in and out in quite some rush pushing us to eat really fast. We were stuffed like Christmas turkeys by the time we got to the main and had to take it in a doggy bag. Would recommend but wouldn't praise too high given the price.

Excellent if you want to try authentic yet sophisticated Chinese food. The device was exceptionally friendly even though we were not the easiest guest considering our change requests for the menu. We went for lunch, try to book a table at the window, it’s nicer and more bright than in the back.

The restaurant promises a “unique and memorable meal” and they deliver. Think I had 18 courses all told - some of the courses were bite size, and thank god for that because I wouldn’t have been able to eat any more. Overall an enjoyable experience, but the food is fairly average in my opinion. Only 3 of the 18 courses really stood out to me as having a nice flavour but then there wasn’t enough of it. Tons of the courses weren’t anything special in my opinion and instead acted as fillers. £90 per person for average food is not something I’d really want to do again. Wouldn’t really recommend. Think there are way way nicer Chineses where you can just choose dishes for yourself that you like for 1/5th the price.

Such a great experience for my anniversary. I’m usually skeptical of tasting menus because I never get that full but this one is well worth the money. The small plates are beautifully done and the main course at the end makes sure you are full! It’s like a chinese banquet for two, the format of a tasting menu is actually very well suited for chinese food. Authentic flavors too. They gave us two free flutes of champagne and at the end of the night they had an extra crab dish so we got that too for free! The dessert courses are amazing as well. The staff were super nice and very diverse. I highly recommend coming here :)

A very nice small place with a many many things to try. Keep in mind that the style of the restaurant is there is no a le carte, you just tell them what type of food do you like and what kind of allergies that you might have. After that the food will swarm you! Amazing.

One of the best dining experiences I’ve had in London. Quality and fresh food, amazing and attentive service, intrigue and excitement behind the unknown menu. Had the vegetarian menu and was very satisfied. These pictures are from a visit a while ago so hopefully don’t ruin any surprises. Anyway, the dishes just kept coming out so there are many more to be surprised by. We were stuffed by the end.

An amazing restaurant. The service was faultless - warm, genuine and good fun. The food was amazing too; it’s hard to pick a favourite as the dishes come quickly and are all deserving in their own right but it has to be the crab, which (incredibly) the team insisted we had on the house after ordering a different main. I’ll be thinking about that for days! One of the best restaurant experiences we’ve had in a long time.

***UPDATE*** We did take Hunan up on their offer of return..and we are so very happy we did! Our experience was completely different, the food was lovely and the environment so much better at the back of the restaurant than the front! Instead of the food being greasy and rushed our plates were small, delicate and delicious! The whole evening was an experience like no other and of course the wine menu was just fabulous. Richard is also a fabulous restaurant manager, one Hunan should be proud of. A truly different restaurant to the one we initially visited. We would recommend Hunan for a special occasion to our friends. To the Manager/Owner at Hunan, We have emailed this directly to the restaurant over a week ago with no response. We recently visited Hunan to celebrate our anniversary, although our experience was not what we had expected. When we arrived we were greeted with good hospitality and taken to our table ready for a great Chinese based dining experience. The wine menu held an extensive list of well priced, good quality wines. The venue is small and intimate which suits it, although the toilets are very run down and need some TLC. We were aware of the high price point on the restaurant so expected food to match. What let our experience down was the quality of food in general. The food was a lot of grease and oil on most of the dishes and everything felt a little sickening. We know the restaurant dosn't like waste however we wasted a lot of our food. It was like a bottle of sweet chilli had been used without hesitation. The blackened cod is an exception to this; it was great. Overall however, the food didn't really live up to the standards you would expect for a £285 meal - it was clearly quantity over quality. My girlfriend and I left Hunan, happy with our evening together and a lovely bottle of wine, but disappointed with the food/price ratio and the quality of food. We just felt full of greasy low quality food. Later in the evening my girlfriend did not feel and unfortunately through the night suffered from severe vomiting throughout the night - we believe highly likely this was from the food at Hunan; mussels, lobster, pork, cod; greasy food etc. We have never written anything like this before and understand it is not what a restaurant wants to be told, but we believe we need to share our experience. As aforementioned, our review is mainly dervived from the very high price in comparison to our experience and my girlfriend being very unwell and in a horrible way which I wish on no one. We would be very grateful if Hunan could review our experience with care.

Their food may suit European taste.. honestly doubt one will find many oriental customers there...totally confused what they want to achieve...a high class restaurant? they are not...good oriental food experience? No way. Waiters and waitresses did not feel to have any training..not in the same level compared with those Michelin * restaurants..it's not just serving and clearing dishes from table..e.g. no idea the composition of dishes serving..we had 20 petit dishes, stomach was full but missing quality and delicacy..for the price paid.I would be really spoilt for choice!! Perhaps entering with too high expectations after reading Google reviews and recommendations from English friends, but came out lost and disappointed.
