A really cozy & interesting place to eat, looking at all the old items found in the building. It was a nice change from all the fish & chip shops. Staff were lovely and service super quick. The portion sizes were generous & tasted so nice! Would definitely recommend, I would visit again in the future!

To say this cafe specialises in and only serves pies and mash, it was extremely disappointing. I don’t often post reviews, but feel this one is necessary. Chicken and leek pie was extremely lacking in chicken - as in 2 pieces, the main ingredients were salt (far too much of) and leeks, in sauce. Steak and kidney pie - which was listed in the menu as being slow cooked, was minced beef and if kidney was present, it could not be tasted. Mash (the only accompaniment option), was lumpy. Needless to say won’t be returning!

We called in this little gem of a cafe for lunch Read so many good reviews about it.Was not disappointed It was all we expected it to be.My husband had the steak and kidney and l had the steak and ale pie, both with mash mushy peas and gravy.Excellent portion size. Also had the jam roll poly with custard and could have fed half of Whitby with it.The lovely chap who served us kindly offered to box half of it up for us as it was too good to leave 😋 Very polite staff, would highly recommend 😀

Nice pie shop. No frills. Service could be a little better. We'd been sat for a while and when eventually we were approached to be served we were told there were no garden peas. We really should have been told thst from the off, not ten minutes after arrival. A second customer came in and was sat waiting to be served for 15 minutes. In fairness the waiter did tell her he'd forgotten about her. But given there were only three of us in there, it really wasn't great service. I'd still go back though, this was an off day.

I really loved this little place, and the food was delicious. There were two vegan options for pie which is great, however, I was then told that the mash was not vegan. I was gutted, this seems such an easy fix. I was told that I could phone in advance if I was visiting again and they would have vegan mash available. Again, great but why not just make the mash vegan?

The waiter was friendly and polite and seemed to really enjoy his job. The food was amazing, vegan mushroom and ale pie was delicious. Steak and ale pie, I was told was outstanding. The roasted veg and chickpea also very highly rated, all with peas and mash and lovely gravy. A real gem and alternative to fish and chips. Definitely worth a visit.

A great place to eat, small but cosy. The young lad that served us was absolutely brilliant ,if I could have given him more stars it would have been 10/10. My partner and I are both vegan, and knowing that they had vegan options, thought it would be perfect for a hot Sunday lunch on a cold day. The pie (wild mushroom and ale) was sublime, richly filled and pastry perfection. However, I just can't get my head round why they cannot put vegan mash with their vegan pies? You are only able to order pie and peas. If you are capable of making a vegan pie taste so delicious, then making vegan mash should be a walk in the park ? I get you must make a batch of regular mash, but surely some could be taken from that batch and finished with plant based butter and cream,as their are some excellent substitutes for butter and cream now. It did disappoint,it's a pie and mash cafe ? You can't have one without the other ,even though we had no choice today.

Having been to Humble Pie N Mash recently, I can honestly say that the charm and standards of the first visit were still evident. The food is comforting, especially on a rainy day. It is like going back in time to the 40's. The server was attentive, but not in your face. He took our order the literally 5 to 10 minutes later, the hot steaming food arrived. If you love pie mash and peas (mushy or garden) and traditional puddings, this is the place. Food was delicious and served piping hot, which is a refreshing change from other places. Loved the 1940 vibe with Vera Lyn playing in the background. Shame the service let the place down, no greeting as entered the door no directions as to where to sit. Perhaps this was a one-off, but I didn't feel very welcome. Otherwise, great food.

Wanted to try this last year but it was closed, made a point of visiting again this year while it was open. It’s a gorgeous little place with lots of 40’s memorabilia and artefacts to take you back to the good old days! I had the steak & ale pie and my husband had the chicken & bacon pie, both were absolutely delicious, definitely homemade as stated as was the mashed potato and mushy peas! We also had the jam roly poly & custard (to share as it was a large portion!) again this was delicious and took me back to childhood memories of my favourite suet school puddings! It is only small inside but a very busy little place with one table leaving and another group waiting to be seated. My only thought was I would have liked my food to have been a bit warmer, it was just about warm enough for me to not mention it but may not be for others, again only a small issue. Service was brilliant, we did have to wait, but understandably, as it was busy with only 1 staff member but we were well looked after and wouldn’t hesitate to return!

We've eaten here on a few occasions and the food is good quality. Always get there early to make sure that they can accomodate our large dog. Ate there last Saturday and not sure if there has been a change of owner - the mash was lumpier than my personal preference, but it was still nice. However they serve Vegan pies, vegan gravy but don't do vegan mash - someone asked if they did and just got a blunt no - no offer to reduce the price for pie and peas only. Come on Humble Pie - surely you can do Vegan mash or even offer boiled potatoes for people.

The atmosphere is very cozy, with soft music from the 20s to 40s of the last century. The guest room is small and simply furnished but clean. The building dates back to the 17th century Century and has been lovingly restored. If you want something other than seafood or fish at an attractive price then this place is an interesting option.

A tale of two halves .....the great selection of ours, all served with mash and peas, are delicious, and with a wide choice of flavours. We also had the Jan rocky poly, but we're disappointed with the lack of jam. The restaurant is in a historic building, and alot is made of the traceable history of it, but it's simultaneously let down due to have small and cramped nature of the self same building, giving a claustrophobic feeling. This may be the same cause as to why a single server is running around doing everything in the food area, and he does it well, but does mean you feel like your waiting constantly whijr he gets to you. While it's popularity speaks for itself, for me personally I will definitely order found for collection next time I'm in Whitby, but don't see me sitting in again

I enjoyed the place, I've been twice. I love the atmosphere and the music plus vintage decor is something out of a time machine! The one aspect that lets this place fail is its lack of choice for vegan/veggie eaters. I know pie isn't normally a staple for vegan or veggie eaters, but with only two options amongst the 9 available feels a tad poor. Not only that, only one option was available at the time when I attended. To go along with this, I visited with my family who all had mash, which, I couldn't have because they must have made it with an ingredient that isn't for the vegan diet. All of my family were appalled as mine was brought without it, as they, like myself, would have thought the mash be made ready to be eaten by any customer. Final notes: Great pies Great atmosphere Add at least one more vegan pie option Make that mash vegan friendly, or make a separate lot for us veggie/vegans, and you'll have plenty of customers flocking for it!
