Huis in Portsmouth

Having looked at TripAdvisor recommendations Huis came near the top and when we realised it was 5 minutes from where we were staying booked.Glad we did.I struggled with choosing as so much to like and then had to spend even more time looking at the beer choices. Food was excellent:a beef brisket burger with sweet potato rosti and pineapple for less than 9 quid, my son demolished his pork belly, the wife loved her mussels and my daughter thought her halloumi rosti was amazing. Interesting beer choices but both enjoyed the coconut beer and the banana beer.We finished with brownie in a waffle and rolled out the door 2 hours after entering. Great food, great staff. Can't recommend more highly.

Can you give a venue a 6?! What a surprise.... Incredible beer menu, outstanding food and superb service. It literally doesn't get any better. Visit - you'll be thrilled you did.

We visited this amazing restaurant on 24th August. It was one of the best meals I have ever eaten. We ate the Croque Americain, it was gorgeous, one of those meals you don’t want to end. The beers were fabulous as well as was the excellent service and atmosphere. I highly recommend this restaurant. My only complaint is that there isn’t a Huis where I live in Buckinghamshire.

We have frequented Huis for several years, a true gem of Southsea. We shared the french onion soup and 2 of the croquettes. For mains we had one funghi and one l’américain croque. All the food was generously portioned and delicious. Both good and drink are very reasonably priced, and the staff are welcoming and attentive. Couldn’t recommend more.

Have visited many times both just to sample the many beers and to eat. Food and service were divine as usual and now consider this the best place to eat in Southsea now that Montparnasse has closed.

Will absolutely be returning! Husband had the brisket burger - the meat was pull apart perfect and seasoned amazingly. I had the mussels and they were, muah! Chefs kiss!!! Staff was very friendly, and quick service. Can’t say enough good things… visit if you’re in Portsmouth!

Fantastic food, mussels, stew, Croque and meatballs washed down with some pretty strong beer. Definitely come to Huis for dinner, snack, beer or any excuse for drink or food

My boyfriend and I visited during August to commemorate two years since we went on a trip to Belgium. The beers were divine and just as good as when we were in Belgium (also loved the matching glasses to the beer brand) and the food was incredible. I had a baked camembert to start and the homemade garlic butter and onion chutney were to die for! My boyfriend had the special pulled pork buns which he absolutely loved and the smoked cheese sauce just elevated the whole dish. For mains, I had the halloumi rosti which was beautifully presented and the flavours complemented each other perfectly. My boyfriend had classic Moules Frites and said they were just as nice as the ones he had in Belgium, even if he struggled to get through them all! We could not be more pleased and it really made our Portsmouth trip extra special. So good for you to be so accommodating for vegetarians as that is hard to find sometimes! Cannot recommend enough.

Great service, fantastic food and the best of Belgian beer. Lovely atmosphere we had a genuinely brilliant time.

Outstanding food and drinks. I have eaten all over the world and can honestly say Huis is in my top 3 food eateries. Great little place and the staff were very attentive. Can not wait for my next visit.

After living in England for years finally found a place where we can exchange some Flemish/Dutch words and eat great Bitterballen. The service was very friendly and all the meals incredibly generous. The beer selection is very wide too. Highly recommend Huis!

Had dinner here with my Wife this evening. Food was so good I was contemplating divorce so I could marry the chef. The fantastic food was complimented by the great selection of beers and gin. Service was also brilliant.

I have being going to Huis every time I go out in Southsea for a few years now and the beer has always been outstanding with a vast amount of choice. I have been there for food a few times since last year and each time it has been incredible, beautifully presented and tastes out of this world. Service has also been very quick and friendly. Easily my favourite restaurant and I've been recommending it to anyone who will listen! This Saturday I had the duck breast and it was possibly the best duck I have ever had, I would also encourage anyone to get a waffle as they are definitely worth it if you can fit it in!

Wow. What a visit. Their food is top notch - the pork belly is stunning - my wife had the mussels and was very impressed. Good range of base level Belgian beers, and a strong craft mix. Would like to see some big name lambic but that’s picky of me. Quirky venue, nice staff, recommend

We visit HUIS often and were excited to be able to have some food and being along our dog. He has a brilliant time and enjoyed all the attention from staff. We had amazing food (Croque Monsieur is divine) and great beer. So nice to be able to go again :-)

Would have easily been 5 stars but on the day of our visit there was an unfortunate background 'white noise' coming from the fridges which was waiting to be fixed. Came on a Saturday evening, must book as small quaint vibe and very popular! They had a cracking selection of Belgian beers, amazingly quirky glasses and the servers had good taste recommendations. The food was other level and the portion sizes big and hearty without being over-bearing! Can’t wait to visit again!

Having been a regular costumer (even enjoying deliveries during lockdown) for a while I can say I love Huis!The staff is really friendly and helpful and the food and beers great! Only sad note, I think they changed the bread used from Croques from a great and tasty sourdough to what tastes like supermarket bread (also super heavy to digest!).A real shame. I'll keep going to Huis but unfortunately I'm giving up on my favourite dish from the menu!

I absolutely love the croques at HUIS. Not only is the menu delicious, but it also has an amazing atmosphere and the staff goes above and beyond to provide guests with a delightful experience. Can't recommend enough!

Wide variety of Belgian beers and other alcoholic drinks. Generous portion of mussels, would definitely recommend sharing them with someone, along side with some small plates. Staff are friendly and efficient.

Such a little gem. Fantastic choice of beers. The food was excellent but big portions. We share the our starters and then a had the special starters as my main. Didn’t make dessert. Would definitely be back when we visit Southsea again.

Very nice chilled out evening and meal. We went for petit modules, onion soup, belly pork and steak washed down with a decent bottle of bubbles didn't go for any of the great sounding deserts as we were full, all were excellent and great value for money. Will definitely be back next time we are in the are.

Me and my wife went to Huis on the 9/7/21 and had a lovely meal. We shared baked camenbert to start which had lovely bread, garlic butter and chutney, this was followed by our mains to which I had the weinersnitchel and my wife had the croque madame. My advice is simple.....go and eat there

We love Belgian beer and always go to Belgian bars/ restaurants when we can. The staff were great. The food was just amazing. The tastiest meal I have had in a very long time. I bought some bottles to take home. We loved our evening in this bar, and will return when we are back in the area. Many thanks.

I choose this place after reading reviews on Trip Advisor!! I was looking for somewhere a bit different and something with good atmosphere!! I’m glad I booked as they were turning people away at 7:00pm! We had the mezze platter to share and then I had red snapper and my husband had weinersnitzel. Both were excellent, big portions and creative! They have lots of Belgium beers available including an alcohol free one!! The 2 guys were attentive and served everyone quickly and efficiently!! It was a really good choice and totally recommend!!

We found a friendly, informal atmosphere at this Belgian bar/restaurant. We very much enjoyed the swordfish in lemon/caper sauce and meatballs with stoemp, which we’d describe as hearty meals, and the large chocolate waffles, but were too full to finish the latter unfortunately. They have a good range of beers to accompany the various dishes, which very much suited my husband, but, not being a beer drinker, I enjoyed the cider.We would certainly go there again on a return visit to Portsmouth.

A small restaurant that offered a warm welcome and large portions. We enjoyed a reasonable moules starter and a fine Belgian onion soup. Followed by a fine beef carbonnade with a westmalle tripel and a generous portion of belly pork accompanied by a not quite so much enjoyed apple beer. The inevitable waffle desert was also generous and crispy. Excellent value and efficient, helpful service.

Absolutely love the food, drinks, experience and customer service! Everyone who works here is friendly, has a smile on their face at all times and knew their beers! Me and my parents visited today for a late Father’s Day and was blown away by the food, barely waited any time for each meal to come out and we had to get goody bag as the food was too good to waste! A quirky looking place this Belgian themed restaurant has a really unique character.We were served by a really attentive, friendly and helpful feller.The portions are a good size. The food is tasty, the beer is cold, and there's a smashing atmosphere.Thirty quid a head for starters, mains and two beers. Reasonable value.

Excellent, tasty food, great wine. Very friendly staff and attentive but discreet service - perfect - and as for the beers.. well, Belgian beer - ‘nuff said (And this is coming from the first Englishman to attain the BSB Diplôme (Belgian Office for the Service of Beer) pass with distinction, when it was first extended to include an English language version course in Belgium in 1997)

What an amazing place! I am a bit of a connoisseur of Belgian beers and ales so when I stumbled upon this place it was an absolute treat. Staff were very lovely and welcoming and seated us straight away. I ordered one of my favourite Belgian beers which is served in a special designated glass which I haven't been able to find anywhere. I asked the member of staff if they knew where I could possibly find such a glass ...He brought me a brand new glass over and just handed it to me. A great gesture. Very kind. Definitely going to be heading back here. Hopefully many many more times. Thank you all at Huis. Keep being great!

What can I say about Huis, it never disappoints! Hands down the best place to go in Portsmouth for food and fantastic beer. I think it’s fair we have become regulars and it’s become a permanent fixture in our diaries. The food is amazing particularly the specials and the veggie options. The service is great and as for the beer just wow, the number of options is astounding, appealing to every palate.I can thoroughly recommend it won’t disappoint!!

Had lunch here on Friday with a friend. The service and atmosphere was great. The food was excellent and good value. Very nice place will definitely try and get back there. Amazing selection of Beers which sadly couldn't try as we were both driving.

Visited this place because they have a huge selection of Belgian beers of which I am a huge fan. We had the onion soup and croquettes for starter, which were really nice. For mains, we both had the meatballs. One of them in the creamy mushroom sauce and one in the Italian style sauce, served with stoemp. Our meals really were delicious. Simple but extremely tasty. Many of the dishes are cooked in beer, so the food is really rich, but I like that. The bread as a side dish is more than enough for 2 people, so don't make the same mistake we did and order 2 portions!Service was friendly and professional. Definitely recommended, especially if you like Belgian beer and hearty food.

From the website we thought Huis might be quite formal, so as we were visiting with our 4 year old we booked in early (5pm). As it happens it's very relaxed and informal so we didn't need to worry. We loved everything about this place... friendly staff, great vibe and decor, absolutely huge selection of beers, and the food was truly incredible. The beef casserole style dish was probably the tastiest I have ever eaten, and the pork belly main course was also incredibly tasty and such a huge portion that I unfortunately had no way of squeezing in a dessert. Cannot recommend those dishes highly enough, couldn't fault either of them. Will definitely return!

We chose Huis for our first meal "inside" after lockdown and what a great choice it proved to be. Excellent Covid-precautions, well-spaced tables and food and beer to die for! Our friendly waitress was knowledgeable about all the food and beers available. We were a small family group with differing dietary requirements and the vegetarians were as happy with their food choices as the meat-eaters - the asparagus dish was just delicious. As for the waffles - they are just sublime! We are so pleased that Huis is back and on great form!

Amazing food and great selection of beers. So good to be here again, a buzzing but well spaced environment with good Covid protocols in place. The Belly Pork and Weiner Schnitzel were bothering delicious and the beer pairings were really well thought out. So happy this place survived Lockdown.

Absolutely incredible selection of beer! The staff were friendly and helped us pick out a number of tasty and new selections to try. But more than just the beer, the food was delicious, the ambience was wonderful, and we left full, happy, and satisfied after a great evening. Would highly recommend.

Another chance to visit Huis and it was still wonderful. Knowledgeable and friendly staff, with Belgian Beer themed menu items and Belgian dishes. Every one was tasty and delicious - it’s impossible to leave hungry.

My friend suggested here and I thought, I don't even know what Belgian food is - what I learnt is it is fantastic. The menu has an extensive beer list, and many of the mains have recommended beer pairings. We weren't sure which beer we wanted so we were given samples. The burger although sounding like such a strange taste mix on the menu, is absolutely worth the gamble. I can't wait to come back and try everything on the menu! Service was great too and it all felt COVID-safe

Fantastic first meal out on 17/5/21. The food was really good as you can expect, great selection of beers and fantastic service from the staff who worked really hard to make sure that everyone was safe and full of of great food and beer!

Just when lockdown was all getting a bit much a fantastic takeaway from HUIS cheered us all up. Fantastic quality food (oh my those meatballs) and great service. We always enjoy the food when we visit and it was great to see the same high standards in takeaway. Can’t recommend enough. You get a discount if you order direct from their website.

Huis is without a doubt mine and my wife's favourite restaurant in Portsmouth. The food is not cheap in any sense of the word but reasonably priced, and, more importantly, made with care, attention and maybe a little bit of love.Even in lockdown, home delivery, while not giving quite the same experience, is still amazing. The attention to detail and superb customer service make this the premier place to get good quality food in Portsmouth. Outstanding.

A favourite establishment pre-COVID and the restrictions imposed by this are well implemented and it feels safe.The menu consists regular dishes which are generally traditional Belgian fare which is hearty and filling; there is also a regularly changing specials board which offers imaginative and well-presented dishes. Both menus are very tasty.The beer range is fantastic, both on tap and bottled and the menu has tasting notes to aid selection; as with the food there are changing guest beers too.It's not cheap but for the quality I think it's pretty good value.

Felt amazingly covid safe and were instantly transported to Belgium with light back-lit beer bottles lining the walls and Tin Tin graphics playing on the ceiling. We both chose the beef carbonate with stoemp which was melt on the mouth wintry goodness and piled into a Xmas special waffle with Xmas pub cookec INSIDE the waffle, cinnamon ice cream, a whiskey toffee sauce, topped with a crumbled mince pie, and like we needed it - some clotted cream! We peeled ourselves off the ceiling after the sugar rush and downed a couple of Jagermeisters. With our Xmas virginity in tatters, we made our way home, two very happy well fed happy bunnies. A visit to Huis is always welcoming, consistently excellent food and great fun. 5 stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Been here so many times, but the beer selection is always evolving and always amazing and the food is perfect everytime. Highly recommended.

Brilliant beer, brilliant music and atmosphere and the best pork belly I have ever had. I also had a waffle and nearly died from being so full but worth it! That’s it!!

Visited Huis for a hearty, yummy, flavoursome dinner accompanied by a couple of tasty trendy beers and we got just that :) rolled out afterwards with totally full bellies. Although it was hard to choose what to have from the menu, I eventually decided on the Champignon Meatballs which had so many tasty mushrooms in and the sauce was delish. My boyfriend had the turkey burger, a special that evening, which he also thoroughly enjoyed. Deffo recommend!

5* food, perfect winter warmers, great portion size. My noel burger was devine, so tasty, turkey was still moist and stuffing was lovely. Husbands pork belly was huge, the sauce was out of this world. Thank you for a lovely lunch. Beer selection is superb. Just what we needed after lockdown 2.0, and a lovely way to celebrate hubby's birthday. Can't wait to visit again.

Good atmosphere and service, fabulous choice of beers, excellent main courses of croque monsier and Christmas themed burger. Waffles for desert, I felt mine could have been hotter but my wife felt hers was just the right temperature - you can’t please everyone!

Vivian was our Waitress and she was excellent...making all the COVID rules clear and seamless. Everyone in our party enjoyed their food...moules, crouque, and schnitzel. Friendly relaxed atmosphere.

We went here for dinner, they didn’t have much choices for vegetarians, but the dish I got was absolutely excellent. I took the beer recommended to go with the dish, which was also delicious. Make sure you have room for dessert, because their waffles with different toppings are to die for.

Came here with my family and had a lovely evening. Enjoyed a range of the beers on offer, one of the favourites being the Huis Blonde. We all enjoyed amazing portions of some truly delicious comfort food - I had the Roblochon meatballs which were unlike any I’d ever tasted, super good. We then, against our stomachs’ better judgment, ordered a round of waffles. No wonder this place is #1, fantastic atmosphere with food I’ll remember for a while. Thanks Huis!

Superb Belgian comfort food. Slow cooked Beef in Beer, and Belgian waffles. An enormous selection of beers and lovely friendly staff.

Visited for an evening meal in October 2020. I was very impressed last time and was keen to return. The staff are excellent and very friendly. The food is super and there is a great beer selection. I cannot recommend this place enough. It is a real stand out.

My wife and I regularly visit Huis for lunch and we are yet to be disappointed. The waiter always greeted us cheerfully and remembers your previous visits which is a nice touch, he also has grast knowledge of the beers including the history of glasses used. We more often than not have a croquet, I have the L'Americain or Monsieur, and my wife the Fungi or Quarte Fromage. We have never left hungry, the chips are amazing and even the dressing on the salad is a delight. Huis has a wide range of beers or all shapes and sizes, our particular favourite is the Banana Mongozo and a cold glass of Frulli Strawberry, the coffee is also of quality. We have ventured into the burger world and it was most satisfying. Our plan is to visit in the evening to sample a 'main' meal. Huis, je doet België trots, Kuifje zou onder de indruk zijn

Mi marido tenía la hamburguesa que se describió como pechuga cocida a fuego lento en cerveza; lamentablemente fue duro y no sabía muy bien, muy masticable - ¡feo! Los mejillones al estilo tailandés estaban calientes y abundantes, pero no se habían limpiado adecuadamente, una experiencia horrible y pedregosa, nunca he tenido esto en Soprano y a mitad de precio. Encontramos la sidra embotellada y la cerveza de trigo muy aburridas y por todo esto fue 56. 00 - simplemente no es una buena relación calidad-precio. El restaurante era muy básico, casi en mal estado, pero para ser justos, el camarero era agradable, aunque tuvimos una larga espera para el plato principal, la comida más decepcionante durante años. . . no volverá tristemente.

The flavours were so spot on and complimentary on the liegéoise meatballs and stoemp. Incredible food and speedy service, if I had to choose a final meal it would be that.
