Waling round the old naval base we came here to find the temporary exhibition as the visitors centre is shut this season. What is a pub doing shut on a July afternoon?

On a day trip to Hoy, we knew there were few choices of venue for lunch during the week. Just off the ferry, we called in at the Hoy Hotel. Encouraged to find notice of baby changing facilities, we were welcomed by Peter, running the bar and cooking. He produced some lovely food, including mince with clapshot and fish and chips (described by a fellow diner as some of the best he'd eaten in years). There's a selection of traditional dishes; starters of scallops with bacon, and pork & lentil soup; Orkney fudge cheesecake for afters. We left happy and satisfied to tour the island. We'll be back next season. The hotel closes for lunch over the winter.

Good value. Bacon roll had a good helping of bacon. We had a scone, bacon roll, tea and a hot chocolate for under £11.00. Staff member was friendly and helpful.

We called in for lunch on a visit to Kirkwall. Very friendly staff and a good choice of meals, with good sized portions. A little pricey but worth it for the food and pleasant surroundings.

The chefs did everything in their power to make our meals and stay a great time. So great, in fact, we had every dinner there after being out during the days sight-seeing!

My wife and I visited for a light lunch. The cafe was very busy but staff rearranged tables to accommodate us. We ordered carrot and sweet potato soup: really, really tasty.
