Come to Howies for a family lunch. We were in Scotland for the first time and we wanted to try local dishes. Howies was the perfect choice. The staff was very frriendly and help us with the menu and our options. Because it was a little crowded we waited for 10 to 15 minutes so I would recommend to try and make a reservation. The food was very good and unique. We also had child menu option for our daughter. We recommend this place.

Best meal I have had in a long time and by far the best meal I have had in Scotland! I had the beet appetizer, catch of the day salmon with gnocchi, and topped it off with the sticky toffee pudding. The beets were very tasty and had a unique pairing of spices and tangy sauce with whipped feta. Very tasty! The salmon melted in my mouth and the gnocchi was the perfect match. Very savory and buttery with incredible mushrooms as well. The sticky toffee pudding was unreal. So tasty and delicious. Couldn’t be more happy with my meal and the service was excellent! Fast service and friendly staff and very welcoming atmosphere.

Nice and cozy small restaurant with really good food. I had the risotto with butternut squash. And soup of the day potato and leek soup. Tasted so good! There was a 10% service charge on the bill. I have seen several restaurants do that here in edinburgh.. however I don't like it.

I had a really good lunch with my parents and sisters. I ate haggies and the catch of the day that was salmon. The desserts were incredible. The service from Boglarka was amazing, helping us with to decide what we want to eat and giving us 5 spoons for the dessert although we only ordered two 😁

What a great family friendly restaurant. Every bite of food tasted amazing and was beautifully presented. The haggis starter was really good, the haggis tasted almost creamy and was perfectly seasoned. The Cullen skink was full of flavour. The chicken dish with cauliflower was a really well balanced dish. Desserts were sticky toffee pudding, chocolate creameux and the Howies signature banoffee pie were perfect to finish our meal with. The staff were really friendly and welcoming. Will have to go back to try all the other dishes.

Emily to my rescue. Not long before Christmas I was halfway through a six week trip across the other side of the world from home (Australia), I was on a solo week in between stretches of travelling with company, and I was just having a Time of things. I was tired after a two day bus tour, I was hungry because I’d shopped instead of finding a decent meal when aforementioned tour bus had stopped for lunch hours ago, I was stressed about some impending travel logistics, and I was getting overwhelmed by the combination. I desperately needed to have a sit and something to eat in order to pull myself together and carry on, but it seemed like every restaurant I stuck my head into was full up with no space for even a solo diner. It was a Friday night in mid-December in Edinburgh’s old town, I really shouldn’t have been surprised, but due to my overwhelmed state, brain wasn’t necessarily braining well at the time. Howies was maybe the third or fourth place I’d tried to get a seat for me and my overwhelmedness, and I was pretty close to a meltdown. I tried my best to keep it together but when the lady at the Howies entry kindly but clearly said they were full, as I said “ok thanks” and turned away, I burst into tears, which was preeeeeeetty embarrassing for me. Howies lady, soon to be identified to me as Emily, wasn’t having a bar of that. Before I’d even made it back out the front door, she sat me down on the bench in the entrance, comforted me (with what time she could afford during what was clearly a busy service), and made me feel welcome to take my time pulling myself together right there. In my state, her kindness only kept me crying, but out of gratitude, so a little better than it had been. Just as I was feeling about ready to head back out and carry on trying to find a suitable place to stop and eat, Emily appeared back in the entryway to let me know that a number of Howies staff had hustled together a little solo table for me, if I was still hungry. If I teared up yet again, nobody called attention to it, and I was shown through to my new favourite place in Edinburgh. I honestly don’t have a clear memory now of what the food itself tasted like, but judging by my photos, it can’t possibly have been anything less than delicious. This review is well overdue, as it’s been almost two months since that evening, but a great number of people in my life have since heard all about how Emily turned Edinburgh around for me. I hope she’s an incredibly valued staff member. Please pass on my immense gratitude, as her kindness has stayed with me, and anyone I know heading to Edinburgh is being directed promptly to Howie’s. (Preferably with a booking, just to be safe.)

Teníamos reservada mesa. El sitio es un poco pequeño y para mi gusto muy juntas las mesas. Pedimos la típica sopa escocesa, no recuerdo el nombre, haggies, salmón y risotto. La comida bastante bien. La sopa nos gustó mucho, los haggies también. Y el salmón también. El risotto para mi gusto lo más flojo porque estaba pasadísimo. Adjunto la factura y precio con propina y sin propina y pagas lo que quieres. Es un 10% más.

Restaurante donde comer el plato típico Escocés maridado con un buen whisky de la región con muy buen ambiente y a unos precios razonables dada su ubicación en la zona más turística de Edimburgo. El personal muy amables que te explican muy bien los platos y su contenido. Además había una camarera que hablaba Español que se preocupo en que nos sintiéramos mucho más comodos ya que nuestro Inglés es muy básico. Se llena rápido así que hay que ir a primera hora tanto en el servicio de comida como en el de cena.

Una parada obligatoria si vienes a Edimburgo. La comida es casera, pedimos los menús por 22 libras y mi pareja otro un pelín más caro porque incluía el filete de ternera. Nos atendió Tatiana que fue muy amable con nosotros , nos recomendó que pedir. Yo en mi caso pedí la sopa del día que estaba increíble y en días de frío es algo que apetece mucho . De segundo pedí una pechuga de pollo a la brasa con salsa y puré de patatas y coliflores que estaba tremenda!! Mi pareja pidió sopa también y el filete de ternera, ahora os dejo fotos. De postre compartimos uno que era de plátanos con galletas y caramelo muy rica. Además para acompañar la sopa, te ponen un pan con romero casero que hacen ellos. Si que os recomiendo reservar por la web para que no os quedéis sin sitio!

Quisimos ir a un escocés tradicional y encontramos este sitio. Sitio con clase en la Victoria Street. La comida bien pero no espectacular, íbamos con expectativas de sorprendernos y no fue así. Pedimos el menú de mediodía con dos platos (entrante y principal o principal y postre) por 18 libras sin bebida. Lo que más nos gustó fue el postre tradicional Howies, el resto correcto. Buena atención del personal. En general bien.

The waitress (Ms. Mhairi) was rude to us. When we were ordering the food, she displayed impatience, as if we were inconveniencing her. After finishing our meal, she swiftly cleared everything from the table, handed us the receipt, and requested payment, even though we hadn't finished our drinks, giving the impression that she wanted us to leave. I'm unsure if her behavior is rooted in racism or if she simply dislikes her job, especially considering she seems friendly to other white customers. To the waitress, Mhairi: If you hate your job, please quit. If you are racism, waiter is not a job for you.

Sin duda, el lugar ideal para comer/cenar si estás en OldTown en Edimburgo pasando unos días. Es un lugar acogedor, con un servicio genial y la comida más de lo mismo. En nuestro caso pedimos poquita cosa porque se nos juntó un poco la comida y la cena. Tomamos huggis para poder probarlo y patatas como guarnición, ambos estaban perfectos, todo lo que veíamos que salía a las otras mesas tenía una ponta increíble, si volvemos a Edimburgo sin duda volveremos a visitar Howie's. Como matiz, el huggis tienen una versión vegetariana, si no comes carne aquí podrás probar uno de sus platos tipicos pero respetando tu filosofía.

The service is disappointing, the waiters seem to be busy all the time and don't pay attention to the guests. When I want to order food, I often don't get the chance to make eye contact with the waiter. I raised my hand slightly to get their attention, and it took a long time for a waitress to see me. She came over and directly said "Dont wave your hands", which made me feel preachy and uncomfortable. Later, when we tried to order more dishes, it was also this waiter. I had already told her that I wanted to order, but she suddenly started to take away our plates. She seemed only care about her business instead of the guest's feeling and request. We waited for her to clear the plates from our table before she helped me to order. Later, when we asked her to help take away the plates on the table for dessert serving, she even asked my friend to grab the small piece of chicken on the table and put them on the plate. We were all embarrassed, but she kept letting my friend do it. Because it was too embarrassing, my friend did it, but his hands were dirty and he felt uncomfortable. It was not our duty to clean the table and it was weird when the waiter requested us to do it.

went with my family for the hogmanay 4 course tasting menu, overall amazing. i had the beetroot and goats cheese salad which was an almost perfect starter, just needed a bit more goats cheese. the soup was delicious and i could not fault it. i had the salmon as a main, again delicious but i feel it needed a sauce to complete the dish. finally dessert, i got the chocolate brownie. a bit disappointed as it was cold and would’ve been much nicer warmed up however the caramel cream was absolutely divine. my dad had the haggis, venison and cheeseboard and deemed it one of the best meals he has ever had. would go back any day of the week. service amazing and attentive as well

Our evening at Howie's started with calling to make a reservation. The lady on the phone, Ms. Karen, was polite and clear and in my opinion, very welcoming. I was more than delighted to make the reservation and her tone just made it something to look forward to. We arrived early and waited not more than 5 minutes for our table in a super packed restaurant to be ready. We were entertained by the artistry of the bartender while we were waited. Once seated, we ordered our drinks - he had The Bees Knees and I had the Sour Cherry Negroni. Both were delicious and I enjoyed my drink to the very last drop. For our food, we had the Shetland salmon which was cooked to perfection with a lovely crispy skin. If there was a bit of a feedback, the crispy skin should not have any sauce on it. I had the Casserole of the day which was venison and it was cooked beautifully with a wonderful concentrated flavour that permeated the root vegetables that it came with, even the beetroot. As for dessert, we ordered the Howies famous banoffee pie to go. Overall the experience was marvellous. As a Singaporean, paying a 10% service charge is normal and I was happy to pay that as well as the £1 pound to feed the needy. Keep up the great work.

One of the best restaurants in Edinburgh. Staff are extremely welcoming and kind, food is prepared to perfection and absolutely delicious. It was a very busy night and we had no reservation, people were coming in all the time trying to get a table and the host, Sarah, was so professional and accommodating to everyone with kindness and smile. Our waitress Adava was fun and lovely. Will definitely visit again while in Edinburgh.

Great atmosphere great service and delicious food in general but desserts were a little disappointing, chocolate brownie was rich and delicious but cold and hard like a tray bake and just out the fridge not s warm gooey chocolate brownie, bannofee pie is not the same as it used to be, more like a large cheese cake- very tall, used to be flatter with caramel to die for and chocolate shaved on top- almonds are not the same!coconut pannacotta was in wee jars with varying levels of wobble and being set- my friends was hardly set at all. It was a disappointment- not sure if all howies have same recipes but this is certainly different to the one down from.st Andrews house

We booked a family gathering of 6 people with a time slot of 5.30 to 7.30pm which was acceptable to us. We arrived dead on time. Service was very slow and it took 46mins to get our starters. This continued to be the case and after our main course was finished a rather embarrassed waiter advised us that they couldn't serve us a sweet course as time had run out on our sitting. Food was alright but not exceptional. The waiter was polite and helpful but the impression given was he had been sent to deliver the bad news. Management at Howies need to get their act together and focus on keeping on time and prioritising service. Spoiled a good evening.

Unfortunately this was one of the poorest experiences I have ever had in a restaurant. We were told at the beginning of our meal at 5.30 pm that we had 2 hours to dine. Fine you might think. However firstly we ordered drinks which were slow to arrive and arrived minus one drink. Finally we ordered food, the starters came and were ok. But the main courses ordered at the same time as the starters did not arrive until 7pm. The steak was tough and the beef cheeks not cooked until tender. At 7.30pm they informed us that we had to leave. So no pudding for anyone. One diner had declined a starter in favour of a pudding so was extremely unhappy.. Then the bill arrived, we had paid a deposit but it hadn’t been taken off the bill and the discretionary service charge had been added onto the bill without our agreement. All in all a very very poor experience. The server had been sent to deal with all of this no sign of a manager when we queried the bill. No effort was made by management to make us welcome.

5 stars all around for Howie's. We tried their excellent Cullen Skink (Haddock soup), Haggis, Chicken and Salmon dishes. They really know how to season their vegetables the way I like which is with alot of bacon. Delicious and highly recommended for authentic and flavourful Scottish food.

Very thoughtful service. Glen Lyon venison haunch is really good and worth a try. Sticky Toffee pudding is good. The Casserole of the day and traditional haggis are normal. Little noisy environment.

Went here on a Saturday afternoon without a reservation (they were fully booked online) but managed to get a table. Their 3 course lunch menu is a great value for money and must have been the best meal I had during my 4 day stay in Edinburgh. Would highly recommend for people on a budget but wanting a great meal. They also have an equally good value 2 course early dinner menu and I regret that I was not able to eat here again. Will definitely come back the next time I'm in Edinburgh.

It was our best experience of food in Edimburgh. The food was fantastic and the service too. The waitress brought a paper to my daughter's drawing and it calmed her a lot, becoming our experience of eating so much better. Thanks a lot, guys!

Best of both worlds - the small fonts and erroneous charges of a big corporation, and the nonexistent CRM system of a small family-run business (as they so claimed). 30 min late for my 12:15pm reservation, yes my fault (Harry Potter tour went longer than schedule), and got charged GBP 10. Fine. But let’s think about it, I eventually still did come to honour the reservation, the restaurant has vacant tables the whole time (see pic), and I returned the table back to them 45 min before my original reservation end time. If you were indeed a charming small family-run business as you claimed, wouldn’t the courteous thing to do be that you allow the GBP 10 be applied against the bill? No. They gave me the cold hard corporate look and empathised it was my fault. Oh well. Since you insist on dumping all the blame on me, I think really the right thing for you to do is to text me, email me, call me, badger me, before you take any charge! If you failed to do that, the next courteous thing is to apply that charge against my bill. If you failed to do that too, the next level is to show some empathy rather than playing the “small family run business” card asking me to feel empathy towards you when I am the one who is out 10 bucks. Lastly, for what it’s worth, yesterday I had another reservation somewhere else. The restaurant was able to text me ahead of the time letting me know my table was ready ahead of schedule, and I told them my whereabouts (at national gallery) and then ended up arriving early for my reservation at their suggestion. Upon entering the restaurant, the reception greeted me with a head tilt and bubbly “how was the national gallery!?” Now that is a real small family run business, with its charm and all. Takeaway for readers: This charge started Sept 2023. You need to read the last sentence of your reservation email, and arrive within 15 minutes of your reservation.

Gutes Restaurant, um schottische Küche zu probieren. Neben den Klassikern gibt es Steaks aus den Highlands, welche wie bestellt haben. Diese haben sehr gut geschmeckt. Der Beilagensalat, die French Fries und die Sauce schmeckten auch sehr gut.

Across our hotel and have had a couple of meals here. Their take on Haggis pretty good. They have a vegan option of it too. Also, their Banoffee is pretty good. Make a reservation because they get busy. We pretty much walk in but it can be either rushed or a little bit of a wait.

Je ne dis pas que j’ai vécue une mauvaise expérience. Mais je trouve que ce restaurant est très sur-côté ! La nourriture est bonne mais sans être incroyable. Les prix sont élevés pour cette qualité. Le gros point noir est le service : - vous venez 10 minutes avant l’heure de votre réservation et on vous fait attendre jusqu’à 10 minutes après l’heure de réservation - une toute petite table pour deux juste à côté de la cuisine et des serveurs, on ne s’entendait pas parler - la chaise était contre un gros pilier porteur, bloquant ainsi le bras droit et rendant très désagréable le repas - et surtout, c’est vraiment fast and furious, à peine arrivé vous devez choisir très vite votre repas et on se sent pressé de finir très vite car le but est que vous libériez rapidement la table La déco est vraiment pas folle. Pour un restaurant qui vend une image un peu exclusive, c’est dommage ! Point positif : les serveurs sont sympas

I never leave reviews, but simply had to following our recent, unplanned visit here. Staff where friendly and knowledgable, the surrounding are modest complimented by a warm welcome and good atmosphere. Food - the best seafood we have ever had. We ordered the Mussels, Surf & Turf & linguine. Portions were huge! Topped off with the house white, it was a fab meal. Will defo visit again on our next trip.
