We had an excellent Sunday lunch. The chef and the kitchen staff are excellent. I had very tender roast beef and a huge Yorkshire pudding. The meal was cooked to perfection. Lovely vegetables. The waiters were very attentive and there was a lovely cosy atmosphere. Truly to be recommended.

Good range of food on the menu. Especially like the coffee and small dessert option.

Looking at other reviews our experience may not be typical. 2 of us had the cod and chips which consisted of very thick batter and not much cod. Chips a bit undercooked. The other two in our group enjoyed their food. Lots of young staff around but not very attentive.

We must have driven past the Horse and Groom hundreds of times without giving it a second look, dismissing it as not to our liking, being on the busy A4 road. Friends invited us there and we were very surprised to discover it to be much larger inside with a traditional oak beam ambiance and it was very busy, almost full. Once inside, the busy A4 is quickly forgotten. Also surprising was the excellent quality of the food and great beer. It doesn't appear to be part of a chain and is better for it. It's now on our list for regular visits and can fully recommend it.

My friend and I go there most Mondays for lunch and it’s always so delightful - the food is excellent and reasonably priced for the superb quality - we love it!

Third visit for lunch with friends. Each time an imaginative and different menu. As a vegetarian I often end up with poor choices but here all were tempting and delicious. all food was hot, well presented , and cooked. Helpful professional service.AND NO MUSIC, thank you ...other pubs please note!

Top service from the Canadian girl who we think was the manager but if she wasn't then she should be promoted as the service from her was 10/10 and I don't say that very often.

Beautiful tender and tasty roast beef dinner beside a roaring fire on a winters evening. Walked in with no need to book and warm hospitality. Couldn’t ask for more than that!

It's our local pub and is always busy and friendly. Dog friendly and nice helpful staff. Food is always nice 🙂 Lovely roast dinners. You can relax in there and enjoy family and friend time

Thee best Sunday lunch for miles. Such a lovely way to spend an afternoon with friends. So cosy, Great service and the food and service were excellent. Portions are huge and everything was cooked to perfection. Thank you for a lovely dinner again Horse and Groom.

There was a party of 12 of us toasting the life of a dear colleague who had died. The very helpful young bartender found us a table in a quiet corner of the pub to accommodate us all. We were only having drinks but he also brought a tray of glasses and water. Thank you to him and a great venue.

Lovely meal at this restaurant my wife was very pleased with her vegetarian meal , and my pie and mash was great. Well worth a visit I don't think you will be disappointed. Will return again

Lovely warm welcoming pub. Met friends for pre Christmas dinner. Greeted very nicely by the young male waiting staff member who took our drinks & starters order. The Manager, Colin came over our drinks which were incorrect, and we advised him very politely of this, and said we would have them anyway. He literally stomped off huffing & puffing and was quite dismissive & rude to us. I did speak quietly with him at the bar area and ask that preference is for him not to be so rude. His response was 'well that's what the ticket advised'! anyway we didnt let him spoil our evening, but tbh it did put a little downer on the evening. However the young male waiting staff offered excellent service, the food was also very good and a lovely festive atmosphere. Unfortunately just let down by the very rude manager. Would like to return, and hopefully he will be in a better mood.

First time here for Sunday dinner, wow wow wow! The food was piping hot, I can be very fussy and people may say £22ish for Sunday roast is on the high side but the portions are massive and such good quality. Dog friendly and lovely atmosphere! Also love the hot drink/ little pudding idea which is perfect to end a large meal! Also the broccoli/ blue cheese soup, just exquisite! We will be back :) it felt like a Christmas dinner, that is how good it was!

What a lovely place, very spacious busy restaurant food was very delicious we went for Sunday lunch the beef was Devine, service guys were friendly and helpful and very efficient would recommend you book so as not to be disappointed, will be going back very soon.

The food was good but we were told that we could only have a high table near the bar as the restaurant was fully booked, but as we left restaurant I counted over 10 tables free! This was disappointing, as to go out for a meal is a treat and it was just so uncomfortable, my husband had to keep getting up and moving around and unfortunately meant that we didn’t really enjoy the meal.

We are not the easiest party hubby is gluten intolerant and my 91 year old dad has food anxiety. I could not praise our waitress more unfortunately I didn’t get her name but she advised us which meals were available in smaller portions and also suggested dad look at the children’s options. The food was fantastic dad thoroughly enjoyed it and hubby said it was the best gluten free menu he had seen. Thank you to all the staff for the excellent and very polite service we will definitely be back.

Be wary of visiting this pub if you have allergies or food intolerances. I am gluten and dairy free. I was just given the menu (with allergen advice) and left to get on with it. I asked the waiter a few questions about the roast dinner and lamb hotpot ie whether they could be made gluten and dairy free and just told 'no!] I also have a histamine intolerance but don't usually mention this as it is too much to explain, so just choose my food carefully. It is really difficult for me to find anything on a menu. I know I am in good hands when I am told the manager will take my order, or told I'll get the chef to come out and speak to you and let you know the options. Eventually once I had finally ordered, someone did come out of the kitchen and advise that I could have new potatoes and veg without butter with my meal. Why they did not do this before - I don't know??!! HOWEVER, once I had got my food, the new potatoes tasted like they had been reheated several times already. The fish was nice but the fact that it and my vegetables had literally been covered in lemon juice, which unfortunately is high in histamine, made it virtually inedible for me. I have never known any other food outlet cover the fish and veg with lemon. Generally you are given lemon on the side of the plate so you can choose whether you want to add it to your meal or not. I had been looking forward to going out and was really disappointed. On the plus side they did not charge me for my meal but I received no word of apology which is extremely rude. I felt like an inconvenience the whole way through. It is hard having dietary issues anyway but to feel ignored and made to feel like a nuisance by having to keep asking questions was upsetting. I had a really bad reaction to the little food that I had eaten that evening and during the night. We had been planning to come here for Christmas but I will not be returning. On a positive note my husband who has no allergies or food intolerances, really enjoyed his roast dinner and felt that the portion sizes were good.

Not a lot of vegetarian options. Expensive. I had fish and chips but the fish was poor quality and at £17.95, certainly not value for money. With a drink and a dessert, my purse was poorer for £30.00.

This pub has such great character and it's always a pleasure to visit here. I regularly come here for the fish and chips as they consistently serve you delicious food that is tasty, piping hot and fresh. The brownie is superb as well - rich, gooey, and with melting chocolate chunks. Highly recommend

Another great lunch at the horse and groom.Excellent food and service.Don’t normally have a steak burgher but had one today and thoroughly enjoyed it,with chunky chips!My wife and son had the cod and chips with a similar experience.

Excellent Food if you're an adult. Our food was delicious, although it did take quite a while to arrive, the pub didn't seem that busy. All the adult meals were excellent, but my daughters chicken goujons were rock hard & inedible. On another note, make sure you ask if your main course comes with vegetables, ours were not described on the menu as having veg included, so ordered extra portions of buttered veg. We were not told at any stage that our meals had veg included & felt disappointed when our mains came with veg, the extra veg was not needed & was essentially wasted (I hate food waste).

Stunning pub, conveniently located just up the road from two garden centres, I recommend mooching around them and then heading for a refresher or meal at the Horse and Groom. Staff are so polite and efficient, an excellent array of drinks on draught and just a fab atmosphere. Look forward to going back again soon!

I chose the Horse and Groom because it had a great menu with a great choice of gluten free meals and is Coeliac UK approved. What a good choice ! The service was amazing, the menu as exciting as expected and the food itself was excellent! My main course of chicken supreme with tomato risotto and butternut veloute was delicious, our friend said the fish pie was outstanding too. We all really enjoyed the lunch and felt it was one of the best we'd ever had ... and we're not young! I felt completely safe, not having to worry about my gluten free diet as all the staff were knowledgeable about Coeliac disease. Combined with a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, the 5 stars are well deserved.

I was in a group of Senior Citizen ladies who went for lunch today, Monday 25th September. We had the most delicious plateful of fish and chips I have ever had. The batter was deliciously light and crispy and the fish beautifully moist and tender. The chips were cooked to perfection too and came with mushy peas and tartare sauce. It was piping hot and very enjoyable. For dessert I chose sticky toffee pudding and ice cream which was equally delicious and I finished with a lovely cappuccino and a light handmade shortbread biscuit. The staff were all lovely and very keen to please. Many thanks! I shall definitely be taking my husband there within the next few weeks. Looking forward to seeing you all again!

Stopped here on the way back from Heathrow after a weekend break. Craving good old English food, I opted for a fish pie and side of veg. Food and service were excellent. A gem of a place, so welcoming. Definitely coming back!

Had a fantastic Sunday Roast Jan 2022. Update Sep 2023. Still great .. consistency is key . Offered 'pink' roast beef for myself and more welldone for my wife.. Could not fault the food and service .. Great value from this 'small' group of pub restraints.

Best pork roast we have had in 9 years living in England. Food was excellent, good prices, inside aesthetic very cool. Staff were really friendly but most of all, really helpful. We will absolutely be back.

Lovely pub on A4. Great for catch up with friends, and very obviously dog friendly. Service excellent, catered for a friend with food sensitivities well, and didn't rush us, which was appreciated. Will be going again.

Went for Sunday Lunch with three generations of family. Although very busy, the service was faultless and the food equally so. Probably a little pricier than some other pubs, but you get what you pay for and this experience was far superior to many Sunday pub lunches.

Booked for an early evening meal, greeted nicely by a team member. Seated in conservatory area, very pleasant, the young lady who served us was attentive but not overly. Starters and mains, both excellent dishes. We tried, ox cheeks, Scallops, followed by feather of beef and fish pie. Overall a very nice experience and would recommend 👌

We had an early table for 4. The service was very good. All staff were very friendly. The Antipasto starter plate was very small and poor value at £9.95. The fish pie was tasty but had obviously been left under a hot lamp for too long as there was a skin on the sauce. The garden peas had dried out a little. I was very British about it and did not send it back. The fish and chips was very good although a bit pricy at £17.95p. The fish pie was tasty and filling. All in all just an ok from us for the price and not rushing back.

Had lunch today. Beautiful English country pub. Lovely weather as a bonus. All we wanted was a light bite to eat. Even basic sandwiches were £10+ so decided to go for & steak burger & my partner a Caesar salad. My burger & chips was pretty much just that (I was expecting some salad but nothing) with an £18 price tag! The Caesar salad had 2 small slices of chicken & a very small amount of not much else! That was nearly £16! I know that costs have gone up but a salad & burger & chips with half a lager & a Diet Coke that came to £36 was a bit much! The staff were friendly apart from the one behind the bar who made me feel I was being rushed to order! Sorry, we won’t be back in a hurry.

We went here last night. It was fairly busy with plenty of staff who were all very friendly. Being gluten free I often struggle to find enough different choices but not here. I picked the fish pie with salmon, smoked haddock, cod and king prawns with mashed potatoes on top. Served with petit pois and a delicious sauce. My partner choose the chicken, ham and leak pie which he really enjoyed. For dessert I had the crime brûlée with gluten free shortcake biscuits. My partner had the cherry pie. The meal was definitely worth the price. With a larger shandy and a glass of wine we throughly enjoyed our meal. It is somewhere we would return to even though it is not so local to us, For others needing a gluten free meal it is a an obvious choice.

Disappointing lunch, as the pub is lovely. Waited over an hour for our food (salad and sandwich). Not worth what we paid.

1. Re-visited today 9/8/23... a year later... if anything it has got worse!.. Sharing Camembert was nice for two, but so little bread to the amount of cheese! we had to ask for more, which took ages...especially as it was difficult to get the staffs eye, eventually we had to go to bar and ask. The mains were OK, Chicken burger is a thin piece of overcooked chicken in a huge bun with chips... I was glad I ordered some Veg... Mix up with order and we got mash (still powdered mash) and not chips, Some staff (the young man) was helpful, but the young lady who originally served us was a bit off and rather sullen. Staff not attentive too busy chatting and laughing behind bar. We had to go and search for ketchup. Not a good experience there are far better pubs out there. The night before we went to the crown at Playhatch..which is wonderful, staff are great, food to die for. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ 2..visited on 10th June.. Was disappointed with menu and choices... its felt as if its trying to be something its not. Food was processed and bland powdered mash!.. Pie was mostly crust.. and it came with an odd selection of buttered veg including sun dried tomatoes and very stale and yellow brocolil. Waitress needs a lesson on work attire.!! The mini shorts were just toooo short .. fine on the beach maybe .. but at work!! Wont go back.

Potentially a nice pub, spoiled by poor, inattentive staff, it's impossible to catch their eye. they gather at back of bar chatting and laughing. It needs more bread with sharing camembert. Lovely restaurant ,delicious food. Staff friendly . Had the spicy beef salad which was tasty. The sharing cheese board was great we couldn't eat it all! Recommended.

Great food and loots of different spirits, with good beers. Great for Sunday lunch with the family or a weekday meal with friends. Very popular on Sundays so might be best to book ahead.

The young lady who served us was brilliant, very attentive to our requests and got the order perfect. The food was delicious, especially the chocolate and cherry tart! Good options for our 3 vegetarians too. Just one small piece of feedback on the veggie curry which could do with a bit more sauce to rice ratio. Very dog friendly too with a water bowl already placed at our table ahead of arrival. Thanks for a lovely evening!

Excellent food. We tried lamb legs and beetroot falafels with great succes. A special note for the extremely friendly ans smiling staff.

Visiting family in the area for a couple of days, Went here for a meal. The food was excellent, so we went back for the second night to, and weren't disappointed.

Brilliant staff, nothing was too much trouble, welcoming and efficient! Fitted 9 of us in at extremely short notice as the previous restaurant was horrendous so we upped and left and phoned the horse and groom for a reservation. Great value and lovely meal! Will...

The majority of dishes on the menu contained garlic which is great if you like it or do not have an allergy. The staff however were very obliging in their search to find the few unaffected dishes.

An excellent restaurant. Had a very good lunch and can recommend it. No particular downside. Prices were similar to other pubs and would recommend it. Will i return? Yes!

Brilliant evening on 22 June. Love the new additions to the menu too in particular the Padron peppers and the watermelon salad. Food was delicious (as always) both in taste and look, but have to say our evening was really made so lovely by the young man (Joe I believe) who was an absolute pleasure to be looked after by. This was a lunchtime out with old friends, who had recommended this venue. The staff were helpful and friendly, without being overly intrusive. Our drinks were brought to us and placed on our table with care. Whilst we were chatting, totally unprompted, one of the staff members moved a fan so that it was pointing in our direction. They clearly had recognised that we were feeling the heat, and the cool breeze certainly helped. This was a very nice touch, which we all greatly appreciated. There was an excellent choice of starters, mains, and puddings on the menu. We all decided to have main meals and puddings. These were served in good time, and we were all impressed with the presentation and quality of the food. All in all, it was a very good experience. Hadn't been there before, but we will certainly go again.

I came yesterday for lunch had fish and chips it was delicious crispy batter and chips also soo nice plus staff is very friendly service was also fast . Came back today to try the Sunday roast , delicious roast beef and pork , fresh and tasty good size portion the same pleasant experience . I will come back here a for sure !!!
