You just feel like a nuisance when you go in. No welcome feeling, just takes your money and no service, just a grim face scowling at you as you hand over a good sum of cash for a few drinks. The local cemetery had a better vibe than this. Incredible really.

Popped in here for a pint and some lunch. Nice cosy feel, lovely to find a pub unspoilt by modern "renovation" and still retaining it's original features. Looks like they have lots on with a free bangers and mash night, a Thai night, and a quiz night. The menu wasn't very extensive - cod or chicken goujons of some kind or other and chips, and I think squid rings, but it was fine and did the job! Will definitely be going back as soon as possible.

We came here with friends after visiting Hatfield House. It is a wonderful old, traditional pub with no pretences. The landlady and staff are very welcoming and helpful. They have a good, and apparently ever changing number of draft beers, and a good selection of quality pub food which is reasonably priced. If we lived near here, this would definitely be our "local".

Most of the pub is carpeted, but a corner around the fireplace has been left as it would have been before the interior was refurbished. There are attractively contoured grey flagstones. There is a lovely old high-backed settle. Just look at the arm nearest the fireplace, polished and worn down over the years by the arms of countless drinkers. Around the wood stove are collected some of the knick-knacks that would have adorned the pub walls in days gone by--huge brass platters, decorative fire tools, etc--and there is an old milk churn too. A wonky brown wooden beam runs across the top of the fireplace, and above that is displayed a skew-whiff modern clock and some framed prints of Hatfield scenes. The pub is welcoming to large country dogs, and I saw one of them given a sausage as a treat. The locals obviously know each other extremely well, and the atmosphere is cheerful and friendly. Publicans of other pubs also visit, which is a good sign. Best pub in Hertfordshire? I seriously doubt that, but I am still researching.

This place harks back to days of old - in a good way. Unpretentious, cosy bolthole nestled in an old row of houses in a beautiful part of Hatfield. Attracts a lot of locals with its free sausage and mash Tuesdays and Chilli con carne Saturdays (so long as you buy a drink). The atmosphere is pretty relaxed and welcoming and especially nice on a cold winters night when they get the fire going.

We visited with friends on a weekday lunchtime and ordered two chilli with rice, a ham egg and chips, and a ploughmans. The chilli's were minuscule and served with a few nachos in dessert bowls, really no more than children's portions. The ham egg and chips was served on just one thin slice of supermarket packet ham, and the ploughmans was also disappointing. We should really have sent them all back and we willl not be returning.

Went to this pub on a Wednesday lunchtime when the pub tables were half full but the pub was generally empty. Ordered two hot filled baguettes but had to wait 45 minutes for the food to finally arrive. At no point were we told it would be such a long wait or did we receive any apologies for the wait. When food arrived there was a good sized portion of reasonable quality.

16th Century pub in Old Hatfied with; overhead beams, front door you have to duck under to get in from the outside street, inglenook fireplace and a range of "real ales" that seems to change weekly. If you come back from a hectic day in London, just emerge from Hatfield Station, across the road down the side of the Hatfield House Lodge and you have found sanctuary. Not tarted up like so many Hatfield pubs, but unchanged over centuries with real atmosphere. Very good basic English cooking, friendly atmosphere, locals that transverse the spectrum of mankind, from gamekeepers with dogs to the guy who does the readings in the local church. The beer is excellent, but the Guinness expensive.

You want picture postcard classic British pub? You are a yank or a Canadian? Then this gem- that's right, GEM- is right up your street. It simply put it is the best pub in Hatfield bar none. Making a pub great is a simple game made difficult by un-simple people- give us good ales, quality service and banter, and home-from-home comforts and we'll spend our hard earned cash till the cows come home. Can't fault this place. Biggest regret is moving away from St Ethelredas Drive to Chester? Missing this pub. There. I've said it. Time to divorce 'erm indoors and come back home.

On first entering the premises I was greeted with an open and friendly Atmosphere, originally I intended to just pop in for a refreshing beverage and wait for my train which was delayed ( when are they not ).My first impressions were that it was a clean traditional British pub, with a wide array of Real Ales and a good selection of lagers. The pub was bustling with a ecleptic range of people, from executives to local labourers. I was served by a barmaid who was both friendly and easy to talk to, that by chance introduced me to a mixed group of gentleman amongst them was a local Councillor, Nurse, London executive and a Marine who wants to become a midwife?? These all seemed to be from different walks of life but share a love in this Public House.Theses gentleman informed me that the sausage and mash on a Tuesday is worth travelling for and apparently so is the barmaid who works on Saturdays. Unfortunately I had to leave early due to my train, but I would recommend this pub and believe this is what a true British pub is known for:Good Ale, Good people and reportedly good Sausage and Mash!

Whatever the season, the Horse and Groom is always a welcome place to go to. In winter, there is a roaring fire and it's the best place to warm up after a walk around Hatfield Park. In summer, you can sit outside. They have regular beer festivals where my boyfriend gets to try, on average, 12 different beers. And the odd cider too! We particularly love the Horse and Groom on Tuesdays and Saturdays but I'm not going to share why! It's a loved traditional pub offering a friendly and welcoming atmosphere for all ages and dogs!

This 400 ear old inn is the best pub in Hatfield. Very near Hatfield House, it is popular with tourists and locals alike. It is a traditional pub without jukebox, fruit machines etc.It does have a TV but is only used for big sporting events. In winter it boasts a nice roaring open fire. Food is served lunchtimes between 12-2pm, although basic snacks are available outside these hours. Be warned the portions are large! All home cooked. The pub stocks the usual beers + about 4 guest ales. Evening meals are not available, but for those looking for a bargain go on Tuesday night for free sausage and mash with each drink bought, and the same deal on a Saturday evening gives you free chilli and rice. The pub does not have a car park, but you can park on the road outside for 2 hours free. There is also a free municipal car park behind the pub. A great pub, I use it regularly!
