Hornblowers in Aberdeenshire

We have used this chippy many times and normally the food is fantastic. Sadly, this was not the case tonight. The fish was either recooked, overcooked or the fat needs changed! The fish was solid and most of it not edible. This is an award winning chippy and as a local want it to stay like that, however, if they continue to serve customers terrible fish, it won’t be long before people stop going.

Great little place over the chip shop on the harbour pier with big windows looking out over the harbour. Offers burgers, hot dogs and pizzas as well as a selection of fish. Everything was fresh and well cooked. The pizza was particularly good. They offer a range of portion sizes for the fish dishes- small, regular and jumbo. The staff were lovely. Street parking nearby. Can book a table on their website. Access by stairs round the side of the chip shop. Don't plan a romantic walk on the harbour wall afterwards- it's a working harbour and smells very fishy.

lovely spot at the harbour, fresh fish and shellfish available to eat in the restaurant or to takeaway from this place. Pizza and other dishes available. we had haddock and also battered king prawns. Oh try the onion rings!

We tried the mobile van in Laurencekirk, the fish was meant to be medium and it was the tiny, the chicken fillets tasted horrible and the batter was all soggy, the chips were hard and dry, definitely not worth paying nearly £40, we will not be using the mobile chip van again.

We were disappointed after this having such good reviews! The haddock wasn't that fresh, white pudding was stories. Smoked sausage was the only thing that was nice.

Visited today 3 rd June for a Take away to enjoy with family . 3 Fish suppers 2 single fish 1 red pudding 1 portion mushy peas total cost £47.00. This was poor value for money. The fish was far from being fresh - dirty grey colour - the chips were dry and old tasting. Disappointing meal . 7 people behind the counter yet it still took over 10 minutes to provide the food. Considering today’s economic climate eating out is a treat, this was an expensive disappointment. Will not be returning even though we reside locally.

Not sure why this place scores so highly. Expensive, mediocre fish and chips were not pleasant. Not worth the drive out to try them

We both had jumbo haddock and chips. The haddock was very moist and the batter very crispy. In fact the fish was as near perfect as possible. The portion sizes are very generous. I'd have happily shared chips but hubster not so keen on the idea! Service incredibly quick considering it was about 6pm on Saturday and there were plenty people in the queue. We also had curry sauce and mushy peas. Both were in huge cartons. I would give 5 stars if there was some choice about portion size as I would have been happy with a half portion of chips and mushy peas.

Gourdon is a gem of a village . Great walks and stunning seaside location. I recommend the walk from Inverbervie to gourdon ,a drink in the newly refurbished pub and book a window seat in the fish bar which sells a lot more besides..The meal was superb from a varied menu and service was impeccable. Euan looked after us in aprofessional manner and the place was crowded with happy punters Our friend loved it and will recommend it to her mates . We strongly recommend it to you!!!!

Stopped by here whilst in the area after it was recommended to us. Didn't eat in, but rather got it to go from the chip shop portion of the restaurant. Fish was tender and and flavourful with a crispy battered exterior, you can tell how fresh it is. Chips were cooked perfectly, crisp on the outside, fluffy on the inside. Highly recommend if in the area - worth the drive if you're not.

I hope the nasty staff feel really good about themselves after getting caught out making fun of my mother in law. She was nothing but kind to you thanking you profusely for your service and meal. Then my partner walks past and hears three of you mocking her? I don't have to make excuses for her because she did not a thing wrong but she is a stroke survivor which still affects her thought processes and daily life. If she likes to go out of her way to personally thank people, what's wrong with that? I'd advise anyone who is remotely different to steer clear of this restaurant. They'll be lovely to your face but laugh at you behind your back.

A fantastic location with view to the sea, spotlessly clean, great food and the staff are really friendly.

We bought an itison on deal for the quayside, two courses for two, costing £25. Every bit worth the money. I had calamari and my wife had breaded mushrooms to start, both sizeable portions and tasted great. We then both had the battered haddock, again, huge portions and tasted fantastic. View over the harbour was amazing and the staff were very friendly. We walked seven miles before our lunch from Gourdon to Johnshaven and back which put us in the mood for seafood. Would definitely recommend and we will be back that’s for sure.

Visited today with a friend. Had a lovely 2 course meal, portions were generous, was lucky to get a table overlooking harbour. Staff friendly highly recommend.

When I enquired as to how long an order would take I was told "It would depend on the next available slot" When I asked for clarification I was advised that "orders were only on line so I would have to check" I said I didn't have access to the internet and the reply was, with a shrug of his shoulders, "sorry about that!" We had visited 2 weeks earlier and ordering although slow wasn't a problem. We support local businesses but this one appears to be in a position to turn customers away! Poor show owners/management and you really need to train your staff in customer service. However, we went to the Anchor Hotel in Johnshaven who supplied us with a delicious takeaway with friendly first class service.

Online order for 5.45pm , several people seemed to have same time slot, I waited till 6.10pm then I asked did they have my order, some confusion re this then told it was siting on counter. Almost ready,When I got home with food for 8 for family birthday, food was not very hot, I was disappointed. Staff at pick up window seemed overwhelmed as so busy.

Arrived here with my disabled wife last Sunday (19 July, 2020,) and asked for a couple of minutes to study the menu board. Young assistant took my order, three crab cakes with chips no salad, jumbo haddock and chips, no salad and two diet lemonades. He came back and asked what I had ordered, so I repeated the order. He then returned to the hatch and gave me a bill for £34 odds. When I asked for a breakdown he told me I had ordered three suppers!(!) When I said I had never used the word. "Suppers," he insisted I had. Another man came forward and I repeated the conversation.He said that they had run out of crab cakes and offered to give us fish cakes and haddock but by that time I had had enough. Asked for a refund and left. Such a pity that someone not conversant with ordering and knowing what was available was listened to and supported. Poor customer relations.

I have been here before post lockdown and it was the best fish supper I have ever had, this visit not so much, ordered on the website as instructed, was given a 45 minute later slot to pick up, fish had clearly been cooked way earlier and left sitting as it was completely dried out, staff seemed to be harassed, had to ask for salt and vinegar. Just not great guys, so disappointed and a waste of money!

We visited post lock down for a takeaway after staying at a nearby self catering lodge. When ordering we were given a slot over a hour and half after ordering but we understood they are busy and decided to order anyways. We showed up 5 minutes prior to our allocated time (to not be in the way) and joined a queue of about 3/4 in front and 4 then joined behind us. The service was slow and not efficient in anyway. We expected given that there are time slots it would have been more organised. We waited 10 mins passed our allocated time, when one of the guys stated that it was for preorders only and asked everyone for their names. Only then did he realise our food had been sitting out ready for the last 10-20 mins? Who knows as we arrived at our slot 5 mins before our time and had been waiting 15 mins. No apology was given. I asked if they had any sauces and I was told they only do salt and vinegar packets. (not sure how true this is as I'm sure a woman was given tomato sauce just before us).When we went back to our self catering I had ordered a sausage supper and my partner a fish. I expected better of my dinner and felt my local takeaway was just as good (and gives you another sausage for the price). Maybe I expected more given that this takeaway had won awards but it was just an average dinner.

We tried to visit a week ago but we’re told they would only accept orders via the app. So, with on 3 g available, we very slowly download app only to find there was a 1.5 hr wait, so we left. And had our fish supper in Montrose. Thinking this place is so busy it must be good we ordered via the app and had a 40 min wait, which was perfect for us to prepare and drive there. The meal was good without being excellent. My wife preferred here battered addict she had last week in Montrose and my Scampi and Chips were as good as the one I had In Montrose. So good but not stand out good

We had visitors so decided to go here for fish suppers. Phoned order in and was informed order would be ready at 18.50 hrs. We arrived to pick up said order at 18.50 and gave the name order was placed under and paid . As we were still waiting at 7.10 we enquired at counter no real answer given. Eventually got our order at 7.15 with excuse that as it was busy orders had been getting mixed up.. possibly more training needed. Also fish had been sitting in warmer for about 5mins so not piping hot.Generally not happy with service but i will go back

Visited last Friday...a cold wet stormy day.....expected restaurant to be quiet.....but no.Excellent meal of calamari and salad starter , then breaded haddock and sweet potato fries.....no room for bread butter or pickled egg .......or a sweet....There is a little fish and chip shop at the Melbourne port ferry terminal for Tasmania that does a great calamari.....but the Gourdon one will be hard to beat over here.
