Hook, line and Sinker in Aberdeenshire

Not a good experience, very expensive, even more so given the size of the portions.To top it all, it was disgustingly greasy and pretty much unenjoyable as a result. The grease was literally soaking through all the packaging.Don't think our bodies enjoyed the work to digest such a grease fest either.Had a Fife fish supper on return and it was like night and day on all counts.

Stopped off for fish and chips whilst on holiday here. Both fish and chips were fresh and tasty and would recommend (although as others have mentioned it did seem more expensive than your average chippy)Walked down to the harbour and sat on the cliff to eat them and were entertained by a passing dolphin pod doing aquatic acrobatics.

We enjoyed out fish suppers at this chip shop, but the prices were far from justified. A queuing arrangement was in force outside the shop when we arrived, but it was chaotic and disorganised with customers squeezing past each other to enter and exit and a poor show in these Covid times.Our fish suppers were hot and tasty, but priced at about twice what we would normally expect to pay. We will give this shop a wide berth on our next visit to this coast.

Fish is priced at £6 for a piece... Then they loaded £3 on top for a small portion of poor chips . Fish is ok, but the Fish Supper is not worth it. Ok, they have a captive market and summer is when they'll earn a lot, especially after lockdown losses... But £9 per person, for a mix of 2 adults and 2 kids... The pricing is not transparent. Even nuggets for the kids were overpriced once £3 chips added on.

Staying at the campsite in the cove below. Ordered our fish and chips and collected. Delicious and well worth walking up the hill to get.

Stopped here on way back from Fraserburgh on way to Inverness. Two fish suppers and one kids sausage supper. Sausage has to be the smallest sausage I think I've seen in any supper. Looked like half a sausage to me. Fish? More would you like some fish with your batter. All stuck to paper and the chips ended up laden with the oil from fish.Fish portion was ridiculously thin and small, we are not in a fishing town in Inverness, but have had better fish from even the worst chipper in Inverness. Not somewhere I would be going back to I'm afraid.The fish was served far too hot which meant everything was soggy and sticky from the sweating fish and chips in the paper. For the price they charge I would have expected far more, unfortunately not worth anywhere near what they are charging.

Just amazing! Stayed in Portsoy for two nights, bought the fish & chips, which was getting ordered by lots of folk that went in, it was delicious, the batter was so nice, went to the lovely harbour to eat it, will definitely return when next in Portsoy.

We are on holiday in Sandend and decided to get fish and chips for tea.Read reviews on TripAdvisor and decided on Hook line and sinker.WOW!.Actually the best fish and chips I can remember having. Fish was incredible and chips were fabulous.Best thing was my wife requires gluten free food which all of this was.staff were friendly and helpful.I cant recommend it highly enough.

Visited during weekday. The staff were very welcoming and provided antibacterial gel at entrance. Food was cooked fresh and they were able to accommodate breaded fish rather than batter. Individual who served me even gave a recommendation as to where we could go to eat the food in our car but with sea views given heavy rain.

My wife, my daughter and myself stopped in past for our supper last week and because my daughter is Coeliac we have to ensure that anything she eats is gluten free or she will be ill and sick.This is the 2nd time we've been to Hook. Line and Sinker at Portsoy and they offer GF Chicken fillets or GF Fish (they may offer others) and we ordered the chicken fillets and they were delicious!Not only were the fillets delicious but I have to say their chips were the best I've tasted and will definitely be back. Would definitely recommend visiting, especially if you have to eat gluten free. My heart breaks for my 13 year-old daughter every time I go somewhere and they can't offer something to my daughter, and there are many chippers that don't even offer gluten-free chips, which is simply done by not frying other battered food in the same fryer as the chips, so well done to the owners for making the efffort and making delicious food that my daughter can be like most everyone else.

Open again after the pandemic. Staff were good as always. Efficient and helpful. My fish was fine, but the chips were bland, tasteless. I'm afraid that I was not overly impressed by them.

2 excellent fish suppers , chips were nice and dry as was the fish , not to much grease , staff were efficient and pleasant , order took about 20 minutes but it was at a peak time and very busy

stopped here on our way home. husband had 1/2 battered chicken and I has battered chicken fillets. Husband would of liked a few more chips...I seemed to have loads more than him. Chips were fantastic and both chicken dishes were good. Would return.

Big, chunky and crisp on the outside! Most delicious chips I’ve tasted from a chip shop. Such a great selection of carry out foods too, from battered fish or pizza to macaroni or sausages. Really impressed and total stuffed. Home tomorrow to salad and baked potato...mind you, they do baked potatoes too

Ordered our supper as we drove through Aberdeenshire and picked it up 15 minutes later. Good service, all clean/tidy, enjoyable supper. Unfortunately fish suppers are very expensive nowadays.

Had takeaway fish and chips which is all cooked to order. Taste was great and couldn’t fault it. Noticed an interesting pizza on the menu - Cullen skink flavour. Perhaps another time if there again

Another great holiday,for the family of 14. Food was excellent as always, so why go somewhere else?. Waitress zoey. And Henry looked after us all well. Nothing too much trouble.Outside pool warm. Like being in a pool in Spain. Everyone wants to come back again. Next year. Thank you to all the staff for making it a great experience again.

We have now visited here every time we come to Portsoy. It has a vast menu good service and lovely fish and chips!!! Well worth a visit!

Very bad. Me and my mother have been going here since 2016. We only decided to go because it was beside the sea. We went in October 2018, and the service, Sitting on a chair for 1/2 an hour, and after that half hour, they gave us the chips from the bottom of the thing. They were disgusting. We only went again because my mother liked the fish. Take my advice and go to the sewers next time.

Expensive for what you get. £20 for two basic fish suppers. Some chips were burnt but solid and others were raw, pale and hard to bite and the rest were smushy. Pretty big difference for a standard portion of chips from a chipper on a sea front. Fish batter was nice though Would recommend visiting Portsoy for the ice cream not the chipper.

Take away fish and chips for me, hubby had chips and macaroni pie. Fish lovely, chips fine, hubby enjoyed macaroni pie and chips. More expensive than other places, and not sure of price breakdown for items as when we discussed it prices on menu did not reflect the charge. Friendly staff. Would eat here again.

Extremely poor service. Lacking even the basics. Ghastly food. Overpriced. Suggest you starve rather than eating in Hook Line and Sinker.

Had a fantastic lunch at the Hook Line and Sinker. I has the special seafood platter which was fab! Staff were very attentive and helpful will defo recommend to others and will be back

£5.50 for half the traditional size fish shop fish. Havi g seen firat hand the Haddock landed locally, I suspect the owner slices in two the catch he buys. Not value for money. Other chipshops are available....

Got a takeaway from here with my girlfriend and it was horrible really bad and the sad thing was that we was eating it on the go so couldn’t go back to complain and the person behind the counter was rude tbh so won’t be goin back next time am passing

After driving all day to get to Cullen we just wanted some fish and chips and to enjoy the sunset. We happened across Hook, line and sinker and were not disappointed. The fish was cooked fresh for us and the chips were lovely - proper chip shop chips!

Stopped at the Hook Line and Sinker chip shop in Portsoy, it’s the May Day holiday weekend, beautiful day here but sadly the food let it down. I have attached a photo of most of my ‘chips’. Disgusting!

Called in here yesterday (1st May) after finding my hotel didn't do evening meals anymore.

Clean friendly chippy serves the best battered fish that I've tasted in years - amazing, and the chips were really good, too! I'll be back!

Not much to say was an ok meal chips were a bit crunchy for my liking, when my friend asked for a haddock supper the lady said do you mean fish and do you want chips, so clearly didn't understand my friend who speaks with a clear Scottish voice.

We stopped here for fish and chips when we visited Portsoy for the boat festival and we're glad we did!Both opted for battered fish and chips (shared a chips) the battered fish is huge! And delicious! There was a wee wait once we'd ordered but the shop was very busy so this was understandable. The staff were lovely and the food was really great! Can definitely recommend!

We ordered fish and scampi with chips. Battered fish was soggy and soaking in oil, scampi were full of water, chips were soggy. Most of the food ended in the bin and I was quite unwell afterwards. We had fish & chips there last year and it wasn't special, but at least it was edible. Never again

Fish supper was tasty, good fish and good amount. Chips were nice. Big choice including baked potatoes, pizza, wraps.

We went there this week after not having been for many many years. The chips were the highlight; crispy on the outside and soft in the middle. The pies are excellent but the batter used on fish and sausages etc is a little too oily but can't really complain. Great little chippy.

Disappointing fish suppers. The breaded fish was terrible. The only chip shop that I've ever used that sprays on the vinegar...just silly! There was more vinegar vapour up my nose than on my fish supper! Please use traditional vinegar bottles.

These have to be some of the best Fish and chips in the area... always fried to order and using local fresh fish... well worth stopping off for!

Being a frequent visitor to Portsoy I feel I need to warn future visitors to the chip shop of what to expect on a visit here. I walked in with my hubby around 6.30 on Sunday evening, shop wasn't exceptionally busy to be greeted with a young female member of staff shouting has everyone placed their order? Again she proceeded to shout this, and at this point the guy who was in front of me looked at me? The same female then shouted at me whilst snapping her fingers Have you places your order? Hadn't even had time to look at the menu to decide what I wanted!!!! Never in my life have I had a counter assistant shout or snap their fingers at me, so needless to say I ordered nothing and walked out after informing the owner he needs to teach his staff some manners and he had lost my business. Fellow visitors my advice would be to either avoid the place or make sure you know exactly what you want before you even step foot over the threshold as the service will leave a nasty taste in your mouth and that's before you've even had anything to eat.

Eaten here several times and will continue to do so. During my visits the staff members serving have never been the friendliest but the food makes up for it. Delicious fish suppers always. Pizza is delish also.

Visited this plaice (hey oh!) for a quick tea on Saturday. Nice service and the food wasn't too bad. Bit greasy but it's a chippy - Expected! Reasonable priced.

Unplanned visit to Portsoy. Stayed longer than we thought so popped in here for our normal Fish Supper. Enjoyable and we did not regret it.

Had smoked haddock with cheese sauce and chips to carry out. Delicious,large helping,unusual to be offered haddock in cheese sauce at a carry out. Served in a plastic lidded container. Have been back twice in one week .

Nice fish and chip shop offering fresh fish and local potatoes fast and friendly service just the right thing after a day sight seeing.

Had a takeaway from here last Tuesday, 3 Fish Suppers and 1 White pudding Supper, it only took about 10minutes from ordering to receiving our food (all cooked fresh to order). Batter on the fish was lovely and light, fish was beautiful and flaky. White pudding was very tasty. Finally the chips were perfect. Thank you for restoring my faith in chippy's. Good ones still do exist.

We popped in to this place to order a quick take away for our two children. My order was taken quickly, I then proceeded to wait and wait and wait and wait, while people who ordered after me, left with their orders. I noticed a small pizza box placed on the counter (i was waiting for a small pizza and small fish and chips) one of the girls looked in the box and asked the other girl where the tomato and cheese pizza was, she argued she had done it, so I am assume the order was mucked up, so another pizza was made, I wasn't made aware of this so I continued to wait and wait, another pizza appeared on the counter, no one looked near it and there it sat until I finally got up and asked what the hell was going on?? Sure enough it was what I was waiting on and I finally got my order, not a very quick take away when I think I waited about 40 mins, I would have been quicker buying a pizza from the co op and cooking it myself! Won't be back!

Visited 4 times when we were on holiday in the caravan, lovely crunchy batter on the fish, real chicken fillets in batter were best I have ever had, lovely fresh not frozen chips.

Stayed in the village and had fish and chips (haddock haddock or haddock) good job i really enjoy haddock. We had a fish supper thursday evening and the fish was incredibly fresh (taste the sea), light crispy batter and lovely chips all freshly cooked for us. It was so good we went back the following night and sat at the harbour eating fish and chips- and it was as good the second night as the first . Staff really friendly and helpful as well and definitely a return visit when we return to this area

After receiving a rave review about how good this place is for fish and chips from a local person. I was eager to try it out as I had been travelling around Scotland for days with an Irish friend on her first visit to Scotland. We decided to share a haddock and chips although we weren't hungry I was determined to have her try this culinary delight.Standing there with the locals waiting on freshly cooked fish was very promising only to find out that I had been served the one piece of fish that had been sitting in the hot box that looked dried up and hadn't been fully covered in batter which really they should have tossed in the bin. But no they kept it to serve on some unsuspecting tourist 'Moi' shrivelled and dried up I flung it in the bin for them and then promptly returned to tell them what I thought. I have no doubt all the locals enjoyed theirs but what an embarrassment to Scotland. Keep your dried up fish to yourselves in future instead of passing it on to unsuspecting tourists.

Brilliant Fish and Chips. In an area with a number of very good Fish and Chip shops this one stands out. Chips lovely,fish perfect and good service. Visit you will not be disappointed.

We holiday in Portsoy every year, and typically visit Hook Line and Sinker 3 or 4 times in our two weeks. Always delicious, freshly prepared food. Lovely fish, a great selection of pies/puddings, and my older daughter loves their deep pan pizzas. My usual is a haggis supper ('supper' in Scotland meaning 'with chips'). I look forward to it even as we're driving up from London. :)Very friendly staff, too. Altogether the perfect fish and chip shop.

Went in for a fish supper after a long day touring the surrounding villages - looked good, pity it didn't taste as good as it looked - fish was fresh just not as fresh as I'd have thought given the location. Polystyrene box was filled with grease by the end - not very encouraging for a return visit.

Very speedy service here but as I've read on other reviews & must agree, the staff are quite unfriendly & felt it was a real hassle to have to deal with us! On the bright side the fish & chips were tasty & we enjoyed eating them down by the harbour looking out to sea.

Was recommended this place by friends but did not live up to my expectations. Staff could maybe smile a bit more and not looked a tad grumpy. The fish itself was fresh and tasty but we didnt like the batter. A bit greasy and crispy and not that tasty. Chips werent great either and you could taste an oiliness in them. I guess we have been spoiled by eating at the Bay Chipper in Stonehaven where the batter there is perfection and chips excellent. Not inedible but the first chipper I have leftovers.

'the best chips in the north east' said one of the locals, and they were right - it's a great chippy and the fish was really fresh.

This is a small chip shop on the Main Street in Portsoy. It can seem busy at times as the waiting area is quite small. There are chairs provided but the service is fairly quick and the wait shouldn't be too long. We had a Fish Supper and a Single Fish (haddock) which came to £11. The portions were adequate, we split the chips, and the fish was well cooked with dry, crispy batter. The chips were a little on the limp side, but we had a 10 minute walk before we ate so can't complain. A curious thing was that if you wanted a breaded fish, as opposed to a battered fish it actually works out slightly cheaper although that is a bit more work to produce and is usually dearer.

Very good good and service especially the mince pies. Prices are also very reasonable. Would recommend this chip shop if on holiday in portsoy like we were or just passing through.

We partake 2/3 times per month my sons chicken fillets are rated best in Scotland by him. Our usual fish and chips are hard to beat although sometimes the chips could be done a bit longer to my taste. However the place is well run and staffed and the prices are at least competitive. Excellent carry out.

Popped in this chippy on our arrival to Portsoy it was recommended to us by friends who had visited there before and we were not disappointed we both had fish and chips freshly cooked while you waited staff very friendly and the food was gorgeous the batter on the fish was to die for as were the chips and I'm not a huge chip lover but I ate all of these it was £12 I think for both suppers but they were huge and worth every penny well done hook line and sinker we will return

Phoned in order - advised 10 mins - arrived to pick up order - poor first impression - staff member wasn't paying attention - had to repeat myself three times, that my order had been phoned in - waited another 10 to 15 mins for the order. Main parts of the meals were of good standard, but it was clear the chips had either not been chipped properly or had been thrown into the fryer and not shaken as they were largely stuck together and in parts not fully cooked.

We had the haddock and chips. It was OK but we have had better. I think the problem here is that they try to supply everthing. Apart from fish suppers you can get pies, sausages, pizza, sandwidches and, and, and. The quality suffers from the enormous choice. Personaly, I would prefer a chippie that concentrates on the core products i.e. fish and chips, a couple of pie sorts and a couple of sausage sorts.

As you may expect from a scottish fishing community the fish and chips are the best obviously they do all the other stuff but the fish truly worth the visit, been many times

We hadden beiden vis in kaassaus besteld. Het was zoeken naar de vis, kaassaus was er in overvloed. Niet helemaal wat we ervan verwachtten. In de weken erna dan ook geen fish & chips meer gegeten.

The Hook Line and Sinker in Portsoy is a complete stinker. The staff are rude, the food is appalling and it smells.To top it all, the chipper has a habit of blocking off the main road with a swing sign making parking outside quite hazardous. This was our second visit. In June 2013 we gave it a one star on the basis that perhaps the staff were having a bad day. The fish was sloppy and the chips were greasy. An oil change was in order surely and it couldn’t get much worse!It is now even worse.This weekend we were treated to drippy oil laden food and rude staff yet again.This carry out is a disgrace to Portsoy.

Lovely and clean chippie with bubbly staff. Felt very welcome even when viewing the menu before ordering with helpful tips from staff. It said PEA fritters so the wife had to get one. Not too god was the result but what did she expect. Fish supper was absolutely delicious and the wife had half mine as too much for me. Will definitely go back as it's spotless and friendly staff make you welcome and nothing too much trouble.

As I live in Portsoy I have been going to this fish & chip shop sporadically for 30 years and I have never been disappointed with anything I have purchased. The shop is spotlessly clean and the staff are generally friendly and attentive and there is very seldom a longish wait to get served. The food is of a good quality and I can honestly say Eddie and Linda have more then kept up the high standards of previous owners. I would definitely recommend...

Been comming here for 20 years, despite change of ownership during this time, always been 1st class, all fish freshly cooked to order, spot on. Def recommend, our family and friends when visiting us in north east over past years allways ask :can we go back to that amazing fish shop!

What a choice of menu and everything made fresh when you order. The steak pies are delicious and just enough chips. The staff are very friendly and helpful and you are served quickly.

This take away is very clean, service efficient, with a smile. The menu was vast. Food cooked as you wait, always looked busy, patronised by locals and visitors. Situated in the middle of village.

Coming from England to the northern wastes is a long trip but to see friends it's worth it - especially those in Portsoy as it means a trip to this wonderful chip shop at least once during the week (ok, at least twice!)Fantastic fish and chips for the whole family - but you must try the smoked sausages! it does pizzas etc too, but the "smokies" are what I go for!

I visit the Hook Line and Sinker very often when visiting family and I think it is a great fish and chip shop. The haddock is really nice and the white pudding supper is as good as it gets. I don't understand an earlier review about it being overpriced as I think it is good value for money.

Haddocks sourced from Peterhead fish market UK premier whitefish port only 40mls away. Pleasant and polite staff, the Grier owner a bit of a character.. Lovely fish supper, fantastic quality and value...as "Arnie" says I'll be back.... Yum.
