Love the food I get from Hong Kong tea bar plus at Good prices

Good food but nothing special. The ribs were reheated. The actual restaurant is very messy with a big pile of deliveroo bags and random furniture. A calour gas fire completes the scene. The guy who served us was nice. There are a few tables if you want to done in but it is very much a cafe not a typical dining in Chinese.

Avoid. Ordered online for collection and order was declined due to one part of the order being unavailable. Was still charged for this order and 13 days later..still no refund!! Advised in store it would be 3-5 days so paid again for the order in store without the missing item...absolute scammers, and the food isn’t even good 😡👎🏻

Disappointing, noodles were definitely burnt as I could taste the char that it was cooked on. In addition got given the wrong order

This is just a cafe, no need to get dressed up, it’s appearance it that of a back street cafe that you would expect to order a breakfast from, with its plastic school dinner like tables and vinyl floors unless you know better you might walk past, but the food is amazing at such good value, lunch here can cost you as little as £6.50. Lots of students use this Chinese tea bar to have traditional cooked Chinese food, including students for Chinese origin, because it’s great food.

I have not eaten here for many years . A friend reminded me how good it was. They were not mistaken , first time back for Saturday lunch was fantastic , so good that we returned a fortnight later . The food was fab . The house special with noodles and belly pork with rice , were scrumptious. Hearty flavoursome dishes , full of meat and perfectly cooked vegetables. The portions are huge and actually too large . However the taste just makes you want to keep eating . The chilli oil served as a condiment on the table , packs a mighty punch . Whilst the taste of the food needs no enhancement , the chilli oil makes good dishes even better. This place is a cafe, if you want a refined atmosphere and decor it is not for you . If you want great authentic food then it is for you .

Before the pandemic I was a regular here and rated it highly . After the pandemic I found that it had been taken over by new management. I find that the staff are not as friendly and standards have slipped. The food is generally good but not as nice as it was for some reason The toilets have been out of order for around 2 weeks now and the nearest toilets are in McDonalds which staff encouraged customers to use. It is around a 5 minute walk away which is not convenient. Last time I went in there was a notice saying there would be a slight increase in price. Today it cost me £10 for S&S chicken, fried rice and a can of coke. That is a £2 increase in my usual order which I would not call a “slight” increase. For those who have not eaten here before I would like to point out that the portions are quite small but perfect for lunch. It is no longer value for money in my opinion. I appreciate that they have had higher costs passed on to them but I will not be dining here anymore at their new prices. .

Had an epic feast down here last week, if you’re looking for the best and most authentic Chinese cuisine in Portsmouth this is the place to eat! The duck and pork dishes literally melt in your mouth. Pak Choi with garlic is sooo scrumptious!! Dumplings dipped in chilli oil is beyond tasty. The service in here is polite quick and very friendly. Also one of the owners is a very handsome man.

I’ve been a regular here for years but unfortunately the last few times I’ve visited there’s always been something a bit wrong. The most recent lunch I had here was a lunch menu item, chicken in batter with boiled rice. The chicken was dry and crumbly, yet greasy. Unpleasant. It’s a favourite meal I’ve had before without issues. Last time was a little dry, this time I couldn’t even finish it. Chicken either stale or fried too long. It’s a shame. I’ll give it some time before returning. Some new faces recently so maybe a change in management?

Really good authentic Chinese food!

So disappointing how we really loved this place before but after today’s incident, we don’t think we will ever come back here again. We’ve decided to come down to Portsmouth to visit the restaurant, we had crispy pork belly, beef chop-suey and beef soup which was our normal order but tasted just like water. We were already disappointed with this but the fact that we started vomiting constantly half an hour after leaving the restaurant was just awful! Very unhappy and we’re now suffering from food poisoning.

The Hong Kong Teabar is under new ownership and the experience seems to have improved. At first I noticed changes to the dishes and thought that it was going to be a change for the worse but after going back a few times more I think it's actually better than it was before. The old owners seem to have plenty of issues with environmental health which was always a bit of a downer when the food seemed good. I spoke to the new proprietor soon after he took the business on and he seemed like a decent person. I will be continuing my weekly visit because I love the place. I took my visiting friend there and he used to live in Portsmouth. He said he'd walked past it many times without knowing how good the food was and claimed that his Kung Po Chicken with Singapore noodles was the best chinese food He'd ever eaten.

Heard great things about this place and travelled all the way to try it. But when I did, it was okay. The interior could really do with an upscale. The menu is quite large found it intimidating. Pro tip: Triple roast isn't called Triple roast here

I’ve been a patron oh HKTB for 20 years, it’s incredibly rare that there is a problem with the food. The ownership recently changed over to new owners, I ordered soft belly pork which tastes nothing like the old chefs, it was overly salty and not palatable at all. The pork was soft in some areas and dried out in others. I also ordered 3 black bean dishes which arrived without the rice, I called the restaurant to inform them that our rice is missing, the guy on the phone was beyond useless and incompetent, he tried to argue that we didn’t order rice, I pointed out that the dishes ordered come with rice as indicated on their menu, he did not try to resolve the issue, I asked him to resend the rice and he wouldn’t, I asked for a refund and he said he can’t. The new owners need to learn customer service, my family usually love their black bean dishes but you couldn’t taste any black bean at all, it just tasted like soy sauce and black pepper, there was never any black pepper in this dish before. The service was so poor I informed them that in the 20 years we’ve been patrons of HKTB we will never go back and inform our friends and family about the awful experience, ultimately had to raise an incident with PayPal for a partial refund!!

Don’t know what happened to this place, new owners riding on the coat tails of the brilliant previous owners. £6.80 for half the normal portion and no rice. Uber eats does not say it doesn’t come with rice whereas it came with rice before. Called the restaurant very confused and asked to return the food as the value was incredibly poor for what we had paid, wouldn’t accept return or deal with the situation. Been eating at Hong Kong tea bar for 20 years this is the first time I’ve ever complained about them, the picture is a tea spoon, the container is half the size of before minus the rice that should come with it. Won’t ever be returning there again after the terrible customer service received.

08dec21: I am giving a review for the three delivery orders that I have had in the months of October and November 2021. I really enjoy the meal Beef Brisket with Dry Ho Fun, very flavorful. So yummy! I usually purchase two of this meal each time I order online from Hong Kong Tea Bar in Portsmouth. See photos below. The first time that I had ordered ever from this restaurant, I purchased and tried the Chicken in Honey Sauce, Shrimp Fried Rice, and Beef Brisket with Dry Ho Fun. My delivery arrived very quickly like less than 20 minutes. All of the food was good. But the Beef Brisket stood out to me (what I wrote above). The second and third times that I had ordered, just the two Beef Brisket meals, the delivery took much longer. One of my orders didn't arrive until almost two hours later (I had to call to find out where my order was, this was a Monday or Wednesday), which I had pre-ordered a little bit before the restaurant opened. So I am thinking that the Beef Brisket had to be prepared and cooked, maybe? I would have given 5 stars but the very late meal delivery will have me give 4 and a half for Hong Kong Tea Bar. And I will continue to purchase the Beef Brisket with Dry Ho Fun while I am in Portsmouth attending my MSc degree programme. :)

Had to wait two hours and 30mins for a takeaway that was due for 40mins... I also rang up twice both times told it be with you in a couple of mins but it wasn't. Turned up pretty cold too! Also to add on top of this they have now BANNED me on from ordering from them on Uber Eats. Not that I would of ordered from them again mind, but seeing this has made me put this review on. I expect they would be busy on a weekend but lying and not seeming to care on the phone calls is not right. Food was average for the price anyway.

Ordered a meal at 4.10pm. Food left the restaurant at 4.50pm. I phoned the restaurant 3 times and the food finally arrived stone cold with stodgy rice at 5.50pm! Will not be ordering from here again!

Ive been going here for many years (Since childhood) and I have fond memories! The food range is very good, and if they make a mistake on your order they will take the plate back with no arguments and fix it ASAP. They have always been super friendly and over the past 10 years the biggest issue Ive had has actually been with other ruder customers rather than anything the staff have done.

I love Chinese food. I have travelled to China and eaten it there, and also eaten it across the world. The one thing I have to say about the Hong Kong Tea Bar is this. The hot and sour soup I had there was in the top three, maybe top two That I have ever tasted. It really is that good. Cold Coke, very hot (temperature wise) soup, and a main of beef with ginger and pineapple. The soup was hot, it was spicy, it was thick, it was moreish. It was so hot, I managed to eat my main while waiting for it to cool down. The food and service is excellent. Dont be put off by the exterior, this is a cafe not a restaurant, and if you want great food, give it a go. Please try the soup, you will not be sorry. I aim to go back, many times, just for the soup, and maybe some prawn crackers for dipping.

Some of the best Chinese food you will eat in the Portsmouth area & beyond! I always say if the Chinese population recommends the food,as they have, you know the food is very good. Great quality food, plenty of it & the prices are good as well.

Came here recently on a few occasions with a table of six and today table for 2. Ordered pork hot and spicey and both our meals came out pipping hot and tasting great.

So happy to see it still open.Used to eat there often when I used to work in Portsmouth. Always good authentic Chinese food at great prices.Free tea or coffee when eating in too.

Been going regularly for close to 20 years. Still the best

I ordered from here via Uber eats and it was awful. The sent chips that weren’t cooked properly with the watered down curry sauce already poured over them which made them all soggy, I had to bin the lot they were so bad. The sweet and sour wasn’t balance properly and was so sour and left a horrid taste in your mouth. All in all it was awful!

Food isn’t great at all... terribly overpriced. As a 100% HongKongese.... I am sure this is not authentic Hong Kong food...

Ordered from here tonight and it was a total disappointment. The sauces were so watered down that it was impossible to know what they were, everything was flavourless and soaked in greece. Order was quickly delivered and hot though. 🤔

I absolutely adore this place. Their beef fried rice is divine. Their salt and pepper chicken wings? To die for. I've tried other Chinese Restaurants, and none of them come even close to Hong Kong Tea Bar. I hope they never change the chef.

Never been disappointed with any dish. Food is always excellent and generous, makes sure you are really hungry.

First time of ordering, loved it will DEFINITELY order again. My food was so tasty, highly recommend number 172. If I had any complaint, I ordered egg fried rice got plain rice, but not a huge deal hence didn't phone and complain. Staff were great on the phone (polite and helpful) and delivery person also. Highly recommend

My favourite place to eat back at 2003 when i was still a student in Portsmouth. Lots of good memories and good food for sure. Miss the roast duck in satay sauce and the yang chow fried rice! 😊

My friend and I have been a patronizer of this restaurant since we arrived in Portsmouth. However, our experience yesterday with one of the staff made me and my friend think twice in going back in this restaurant. We understand that a mistake can be made in serving the wrong dish. But on our part as the customers, as far as me and my friend can remember, we did order the right food that we wanted. However, the accusatory tone of that staff member when we caught her attention for the wrong food that was served, was too much. She even said that we had done it twice when in fact the last time we went there was around July. She even threatened us about their CCTV. If she could have taken out her airpods while geting our orders, she could have heard that we ordered the dish that we wanted. After that incident, we wondered if we were one of the locals, would she have spoken and treated us that way? 🤔🤭

Just a cafe selling a mixture of Chinese cuisine, but the food is delicious, try the crispy belly pork, or their house noodles with three meat, don’t get dressed and they don’t sell allots all about the food! You can get a fantastic meal for less than £8

Read the reviews and thought that I'd try it ,the duck was nice but the noodles it came with were tasteless and came out a bit to quick for me ,not the beat I've had by a long shot, don't think I will go again when I'm in Portsmouth,,I'll look for an Indian takeaway next time

We were looking forward to visiting the Hong Tong Tea Bar again after lock down, the food was the same, nothing exceptional but the prices wow, why the 45% increase? I know times have been difficult (for us all) but seriously is this the way to get back your old customers? I think not, We won't be eating there again until the prices have dropped to an affordable level, Good luck if people are prepared to pay these prices, we will stick to fish and chips on the sea front.

It was a while ago now but we had a customer service experience never to be forgotten. I ordered crispy belly pork with chicken and soft noodles. The food came out and the chicken was full of bones and was bloody. I was less than impressed and took it back to the counter. A sour faced Chinese woman marched over to our table and stood over us shouting. I wasn't having any of it and stood up too. I told her straight that I wasn't going to pay for boney and bloody chicken let alone eat it. She tried to shout me down in front of the whole place but it didn't work. I demanded chicken breast properly cooked and NOW! It came out and she begrudgingly brought it to our table. She then screamed that next time I should say no bone! I think perhaps the Chinese prefer the meal with boned and bloody chicken. I'm not Chinese! Perhaps they need to understand English preferences and I needed to be aware of Chinese preferences. Indeed a clash of cultures. I'd get sacked if I behaved like that towards customers at work.

The food is ok, but surprisingly they don’t serve any traditional Hong Kong or Chinese tea.

A Chinese cafe next to the Painters pub. Ideal for a few beer then a meal. The Tea Bar is excellent and heavily patronised by Chinese which speak for itself.Food is excellent with a good selection. Very fast and friendly service. The home made chilli oil sets off your meal perfectly. It doesn’t serve alcohol and is cash only.

Para simplificar, entré hoy y pedí mi comida y le expliqué que era muy alérgica a las cebollas. Mi comida salió con cebollas adentro. Tomé la comida y se disculparon y regresaron 15 minutos más tarde con lo que llamaron comida fresca, desafortunadamente no pudieron sacar todas las cebollas y encontré más cebollas. Retiré la comida y se disculparon una vez más y regresaron cinco minutos después con lo que llamaron comida recién cocinada, desafortunadamente una vez más no habían sacado todas las cebollas y simplemente habían puesto la comida en un plato fresco. Devolví la comida y le expliqué que el comportamiento era repugnante y que eran muy engañosos y muy egoístas para aquellos que tienen alergias y podrían haberme causado mucho daño. Parecen mirarme como si fuera un extraterrestre. Pedí que me devolvieran el dinero, que era un poco como pedirles que se cortaran los dientes. Dejé el T - bar de Hong Kong e inmediatamente los informé al ayuntamiento de Portsmouth.

Large Singapore rice was pretty decent, lovely lunch meal. It is large indeed and so fulfilling.

Always been a huge fan of HKTB. Been coming here for years and not been let down. Dont let appearances put you off, the food is tasty and well priced. Although i was disappointed to find that they no longer serve duck! Especially as it's still on the menus. Only when you go to order it, you get told it hasn't been available for ages and they point to a tiny hand written sign on the till as if it's you being stupid.

Loved this place since I was 8 years old. It's a friendly small family orientated eatery. Their chinese menu items are to die for!

Good food quick service and reasonable price

Very good food for the price range with extremely large portions. Their signature dishes are Crispy pork belly, Char Sui pork or Beef Brisket.

Esta es una cafetería, no un restaurante, así que no te vistas y cierra temprano a las 8 pm, pero si quieres una cena o almuerzo temprano no puedes equivocarte con esta cafetería que sirve platos muy sabrosos por solo 5. 50 por cabeza, hacen la comida tradicional que los británicos esperan encontrar como pollo y ternera agridulce. En Blackbean, estos platos se sirven con arroz frito con huevo o puedes mirar un libro creado con platos más aventureros. Fideos con salsa especial, Pac Choi y panceta crujiente. No se sirve alcohol, pero hay una variada selección de refrescos.

Este es un restaurante chino donde se sirven diferentes tipos de comida en la cultura china. El ambiente está bien, pero no puedo decir que la comida sea deliciosa, es normal, incluso a mi amigo chino no le gusta este restaurante porque me dijo que no servían con verdadero sabor.

The definition of value for money, had a great lamb, roast pork and though sometimes not available they have a very good duck. And as you see from other comments you do get a good portion for your money.
