Hong Kong Express in Isle of Wight

Been going here for over 10 years and it's in great shape right now. Really tasty food that is always served quickly. They had a really good live jazz/classical piano player in tonight (Sunday), which added to the whole experience. Sweet staff who really seem to care. Thoroughly recommend this place.

Ordered 2 egg fried rice. Food was given in plastic containers worth any carrier bag. When asked for bag changed 10p extra time

Would not recommend. I am vegan and explained this when ordering, but they put chicken in the vegetable noodles and egg in the vegetable rice. Luckily I noticed and didn’t eat any but could have been really serious if I had an allergy. Really disappointing.

We ordered the set meal for 2, portions were great, every single dish was delicious, great atmosphere, great customer service. Couldn’t be any better 👏

rude. there was something in my food that shouldn’t off been there. And I called up and complained. The person on the phone told me to rerun the food which I couldn’t do as I don’t drive. I got my friend to collect the food for me. he didn’t care at all. they forget my chips! He accused me of being rastic. Shocking. All I wanted was a refund on my chowmain as there something in it that shouldn’t be in it. Save your money it’s not worth the hassle. Joke

Absolutely the worst Chinese and most expensive takeaway I’ve had , food was dry and tasteless , no sauce in any dish including curry ! Will never get from there again

Had a fab dinner here really tasty really nice quality and nice cold tiger beer. If your in the area they do sit on or takeaway you can’t go wrong and I’m very fussy with my Chinese restaurants :)

Ordered delivery food arrived far to quickly ordered chicken curry,chicken chow mien ,egg fried rice chips and curry sauce . Absolutely disgusting food was cold and some of the chicken was under cooked and very chewy. Phoned to tell them the food was not up to scratch and apparently they have cctv that records them temperature checking 🙄 . Did not want to except that the food not up to standard never will i eat from there again.

Absolute rubbish delivery from HK tonight ! Usual promised delivery within the hour ! Arrived much later and food lukewarm ! Shouldn’t have to rewarm ! Waste of time to fone and contact to complain to Mr Hang Jnr as he doesn’t give a toss !! His Dad does delivery’s in the VW Ups !!

Picked up a takeaway recently Very bland food Batter on The King Prawn balls was crispy outside but horribly doughy inside Basically uneatable Problem with a takeaway by the time you get it home you are not going to drive back and return it !! Will not be returning for sure

Food used to be good value but has become expensive. Delivery charges now add to cost. Food is average but better than some, so it's our favourite for vegetarian options. Best meat dish is Dragon Fire.

The food was cold, I suppose, it might be OK if they would use the plate warmers. The "Crispy Aromatic Duck" was crispy, but no spice at all, and served cold, like the rest of our order. The worst of all was to be cheated of £16.20, as the waitress (a tall woman with the short dark hair) took three £20 notes, walked away, but did not give any change for £43.80 spent. My husband was shocked, he always tips the servers, but not this time, as she has helped herself already. The amount paid in cash (£60) was NOT put on the receipt?! It happened in Newport, on the 17th December 2022, after 15.00 hrs, receipt N°14. It had spoiled our day. We have just returned from France and were looking forward to a good Chinese lunch. Now my husband says he would not set foot in that place ever again. I wonder if they would offer a refund? Might try to ask at the Newport branch. BEWARE OF PAYING CASH THERE, especially by the £20 notes!

Avoid this place at all costs, seaweed looked at least a week old, mushroom satay was drenched in so much oil you could have serviced a truck with it. The prawn starter was a non starter extremely disappointing and to top it off they charged me 10p for the bag they put the awful meal in. Grab a packet of crisps instead. Minus stars here.

Awful establishment, woman behind the counter was miserable and rude to customers. Her and another member of staff refused to serve myself and my group TAP WATER. Place should be shut down.

What an absolute rip off. Paid £10 for a dish that no longer is provided with rice (takeaway) and they didn’t even tell me I need to order rice. Totally dissatisfaction do not go there

Doesn’t look much on entry but the service and food were spot on. Located in the town centre it’s well worth a visit

We have always used Hong Kong and press for our chi ease takeaways but never again. My order was missing 3 rice when delivered and when I called to let them know I was greeted with the most unhelpful rude staff. They hung up on me 3 times. Blamed me for not ordering it which I did it was on my receipt. They did not apologise at all and after being hung up on threes times I eventually got the manager to call me. He was just as unhelpful. Avoid at all costs the food was average but the staff behaviour appalling.

Family of 7 received the absolute worst service you can imagine. Taken order, cue the waiting…another family walks in, taken their order…other family’s drinks start arriving. Where are our drinks? Asks the waiter, still no drinks. Ok, where are the prawn crackers we ordered as starters? Waiter is on it…still no crackers. 2 children starving and getting agitated. Whole family agitated! Over an hour in, the drinks arrive. Then the starters start to arrive…separately…and slowly. 1 starter missing, oops was noted down incorrectly. Next thing you know, the restaurants waiter walks out!!?? Clearly he is under a lot of stress and the restaurant need to address and employ more help as they cannot deal with the simplest orders and the efficient delivery of the orders. Would not return. Service terrible, atmosphere horrible, ran like a sweat shop. Food is not great, almost puked eating the beef. Will not ever return.

I ordered a delivery and my chicken balls tasted like soap and were un edible. I could also hear over the phone what seems to be the boss being extreamly arrogant to his staff.

Decided to try this This Chinese takeaway As our usual place with sut found to be very expensive for the quality and amount of food you get . You will get more chips at McDonald's in a child's happy meal . It States comes with rice witvh never got as they forgot it . Told 30 to 45 minutes delivery time an hour and a 1/2 later received and was cold Very poor quality would not recommend would expect a lot more for how much they charge Definitely avoid this will be better off going to McDonald's or KFC Very poor won't be going back again

Was accused of liying by the waiter after I had found a blue rubber band in my noodles then to be told by the manager that the blue rubber bands are normally from keeping their stock together. Had an apology from the manager but don't appreciate being called a liar. Ryde hongkong.

If you order Ryde on line they will tell you its collectable in Newport. Staff are aggressive and confrontational. I only wanted dinner and got caught in a tourest con.. I was not the only customer complaining about the same issue. Staff are nasty and it's just con to take your money. Iv informed my bank

Because of medical reasons I asked if I could change items on the set menu even if I paid more, they said the chefs were too busy with takeaways to do that and they wished that they did not have restaurant customers, just takeaway. The food however was good but wont be going back as a group due to their attitude to the customers

Being local and having eaten inside previously ( over 2 years ago due to the pandemic) my husband and I decided to go for a sit in meal as a treat. On entering there were no other diners. We got our table and were handed the menu and a biro pen and were told to write our choices. The front of house was being run by two very young teenagers, who were answering the phone, handing out takeaways and looked harassed and like two rabbits caught in the headlights, even though the restaurant was not busy. On scanning the menu I was first of all taken aback at the prices. The mixed hors deuves was now over £7 for one person only. However we decided to order as we had not been out for a Chinese meal for such a long time and it was a treat. I ordered this and one of the Specials as well as a mixed meat curry, one chicken fried rice and a portion of chips. When our starter arrived I could not believe how small it was. It had one prawn toast, one small spring roll, 2 small pieces of chicken satay, 2 mini spare ribs and the seaweed looked more like a garnish than part of the meal. Although it all tasted ok, it was a pitiful amount for the price. The ribs hardly had any meat on them. Previously there would have been two of everything. I know the hospitality industry has suffered due to the pandemic, however this business has still continued to offer a takeaway service through out, and looking at the sit in prices and the amount on our plate made us both feel we were being ripped off. When our main course arrived it was wrong, and they forgot the curry. When I asked the female waiter what was going on she left us while she stood at the till studying the choices on the menu i had written down only 15 minutes previously. I asked them both what was happening to the curry and she told me she would get it sorted in a few minutes, as well as redoing my main course. In the meantime I was expected to have the chips and fried rice left on my table to go cold. I was rather annoyed at this, as I could not see how the order could be wrong as I had written it down for her? The evening in our opinion was ruined so I told the waiter we would pay for our drinks and leave. Not somewhere I will visit again.

The vegan set menus are delicious - you don't have to be vegan to appreciate the mixture of flavours and the bbq skewers are the nearest thing to spare ribs I've had since turning vegetarian over 30 years ago!

Avoid Tuesday nights, quiz night, unless you are happy to listen to the quizmaster use very explicit language - as well as his regular teams... Me and my companion are fine with adult humour, but in its place....and we don't think it's appropriate in a restaurant.... unless it is made known that this is a raucous, bawdy event.... The total lack of consideration for me and I companion was astonished.....I'm sure it would have been the same had I been with my 80 year old mother.....there seemed to be an assumption that this was their night out, and we had to respect that.... I won't return, and it's possibly a shame for them as I was considering asking them to cater for 15-20 guests of mine next month.... At a time of day to suit them, so as not to inconvenience any regulars they might have Their loss......"Chris" (?) maybe show some consideration for other paying customers, who are not in your team's.....

I've really enjoyed eating here - great food, charming waiter, but the manager "James" spoilt everything last night, with his peculiar, unhelpful attitude. Portions are generous here - I've been there twice in the last month, and both times I asked for left-overs to be packaged up for me and my guest to take home. Last night I asked the same - and the waiter gave us a single, small container....we were told we had to do it ourselves.....we needed another two containers, plus cutlery, to fill them up..... despite asking if it could be done for us, whilst we finished our drinks, we were told that "James" had told our waiter (again, a totally charming young man) that "that's not the way we do it here". I felt so sorry for our waiter, he recognised me, knew I'd had food packaged up to take home.... What gets me is the attitude of "James".....total refusal for a simple request. My guest was dumbfounded.... he'd never experienced that, and eats out regularly at fine restaurants in the course of his profession. On Saturday night, around 9pm, there were five people eating there.... A restaurant a hundred yards away was practically full.....and almost always is. "James" needs to rethink his customer service. It was an embarrassing experience....it might seem a small issue, but it's the obstructive attitude of "James"......and the comment "it's not the way we do it here". Well James, it has been. And you need to learn that you need customers. Customers have the choice to go elsewhere. And I'm going to exercise that choice.

Excellent food and service at a reasonable price

Went in for the £8 festival breakfast. Toast and bacon were burnt. Beans were cold. Sausage was low quality. Another table asked for brown sauce to be told there was none as they don't normally serve breakfast. For nearly £10 with a drink feel very disappointed.

I’m surprised at some of the reviews here - every time we visit Hong Kong Express in Newport we enjoy it! This was my first time visiting since becoming vegan - I had the yellow bean tofu and my partner had the Szechuan duck. It was the best tofu I have ever had - we will definitely be back!

Egg fried rice is what you expect but.... Very small portion.... Chow main is cooked with number 2 noodles (ie thin noodles) but was still cooked ok, not soggy. Curry sauce was ok but was missing something and could have been slightly hotter. A lot Better than most. The Hong Kong special was meant to be chillie garlic. You can just taste the garlic slightly but no chilli heat to it.. bit very nice though. . Nice and crispy veg in all the above not under cooked. Meat I would score 9 out of 10. That's a good score for me!. Probably one of the nicest meat from a Chinese takeaway I've had around the UK. So well done there's Hong Kong house! The beef is very good. I would definitely order again. The only reason I gave 4 stars is it could have been better curry sauce and a little less SMG in the fried rice and bigger portion. See you again soon

Very good covid arrangements. Spacious dining area with plenty of space between tables. Staff masked. Plenty of sanitiser. This was first meal out a few weeks ago, since first lockdown. Been back twice since as comfortable in the surroundings. Food is good and quickly served. Friendly welcome. Happy to recommend. M.A.R.

I ordered one mixed meat and king prawns oyster sauce with vegetables and one chicken chow mein. the delivery was fast, but absolutely no taste in the dishes especially for the chicken chow mein :(

Just had a delivery from this place.. absolutely disgusting.. so much oil in the food.. the curry didnt taste like a curry.. all has gone in the bin...all turned up in microwavable containers so not sure if it had defently been cooked to order

Food is good but can be a little bland - that said it tastes like they use less MSG than other places which is good if, like me, you can struggle to sleep after MSG. Takeaway food was always prepared quickly and the staff were friendly. Eating in and, particularly drinking there, can work out expensive though.

I had a takeaway from them about 2 years ago and I haven’t ordered from them since. It seems by the comments, it may not of improved much!

Ordered a takeaway online which was easy to do and delivered in good time. Unfortunately the food was terrible. Started with a pancake roll which was the best thing we had and very tasty. Singapore chow main was tasteless as was the egg fried rice. Crispy fried beef was chewy, salt and pepper chips were tasty but sent in a plastic tub so we're soggy and a tiny portion for twice the price of other restaurants. The chicken balls were by far the worst part of the meal. Greasy yet dry, and so over cooked the chicken inside was crusty. The meal was expensive and not big portions. Also disappointed not to receive any prawn crackers after spending £30!

Appaling customer service. Imagine ordering from the place for years and having just placed another large order meant for New Year's evening. Their website didn't let us specify the time of delivery, so we called immediately to let them know that we would like to order for 8 PM rather than 2 PM. Honk Kong Express have REFUSED to change the delivery time, apparently they have already began cooking it - all within minutes of placing an order. Clearly that cannot be true and just very unfair on a loyal customer who is not to blame for their website issues. Never before have come across anything like this when it comes to takeaways and will unfortunately never order from here again.

Waited a hour for my food when it come it was cold and some how overcooked at the same time last time eating here

We just walked in hoping to get a table as many places were booked full on the Saturday night. We were not disappointed with the food at all and the young wait staff were very friendly and helpful/.

Unfortunately this time round was a very rude experience. Ordered food over the phone took about 5 minutes all together. Was called annoying by a member of staff because I missed a couple details... because it wasn’t straight forward and took a couple minutes then usual... but again I think you Should take your time and take as long as you need with a customer not called them and the situation annoying, I may have taken this the wrong way but I was very shocked about this, considering I work in hospitality but each to their own.. he was very well spoken but again, shame towards the end. Delivery was very fast..? Witch is good, good food as always very good apart from being talked down to on the phone 👍🏼

Inattentive staff, rude manager, and food was overpriced for portions received. Least authentic and some of the worst “Chinese” food we’ve ever had. Our party of two ordered a “vegetable curry.” Instead, we received a plate of flavorless, stale, steamed vegetables topping poorly-cooked plain white rice, with a sauce that can only be described as a heaping mess of vegetable oil and supermarket yellow curry powder. The rest of the meal was equally unappetizing and ill-prepared. Cannot, in good conscience, recommend for anyone to dine at this location.

Arrive early for our reservations on a very busy night with a large number of guests. We was accommodate very quickly despite being busy. Very nice staff and very fast service. Food was great and super tasty and we was served very fast even it was busy. Portions was very large for each dish everyone orders and super tasty. Looking forward to coming back.

Chicken chop suey, very taxty Good service

Arrived and was told to sit anywhere we wanted. We waited 25minutes just to get any service. Took drinks order and left again. Returned after 30minutes with our drinks. Then we had to ask the staff if we can order our food. Took order and starter arrived. Tried to get more drinks and took another 25minutes to get anyone’s attention. Staff standing behind the counter on their phones constantly or fiddling with old receipts. Another group of 4 had come in and were waiting 40minutes and left as no service. Ordered the same drinks and got different drinks. Main arrived and we had no cutlery or plates to eat them. Whilst waiting all food went cold. Went Upto the counter to ask for plates and cutlery and told to wait as he is very busy (again looking at his phone). My partner then asked again and the waiter complained saying we already had plates and cutlery. Finally brought some over but food was cold. We ordered the buffet for £20pp. Then got the bill and was charged £90 for 2 adults and some drinks. Spoke to someone in the kitchen who amended the bill. Just appalling service. Very young staff and no manners. They had 5 tables of customers but they didn’t care and only cared about takeaways. No manager there at all. Won’t be returning. 2 tables walked out whilst we were there.

Try this... Book a table, arrive early, seat yourself, wait 15 minutes be be offered a menu or a drink, wait a further 30 minutes to order your food, then have the waitress give it to the couple that arrived fully 45 minutes after you did. I've never been so insulted in all my life. I cant comment on the food as I never got it. I gave up and went to the chip shop instead. If I could give it a 0/5 I would,

I have to be honest i feel its going down hill :- ( they need to cook the food properly instead of rushing it out the door ..my pawns were not cooked properly infact not cooked . After paying and looking forward to my dinner after a tough day i recieve terrible food .

We are visiting Isle of Wight for first time and we've decided to pop in and eat here. The staff is very friendly and the food very tasty. Definetely worth a visit.

Visited last week and the young waitress had amazing service and so polite! However, the manager made the experience unpleasant, but would definitely come back only due to the waitress, lovely food and environment!

Had dinner with my son in the middle of the week. Lots of items from the menu missing charged for drinks we didn’t have. Ignored by waiting staff. Very disappointing experience and will never return.

Friendly staff and good value for money food

Absolutely appalling. Was told by a member of staff and 'security' that no one was permitted to go to the toilet after 12, yet they were still selling alcohol over the counter???? The bouncer told me to wee outside, so urinating in the entrance is fine, but use of the toilets is forbidden after midnight! Told them I would no longer order food if u couldn't use the facilities, was left in desperation for the toilet. Absolutely appalling staff with no regard for human needs or emotions. Will not spend a penny there again, no pun intended.

Great meal and always of consistent quality. We have the veggie set menu which is always delicious and filling. Great value for money.

When it arrived it came in cheap poor quality plastic boxes. Food was cold and tasted absolutely vile , my crispy chicken was as soggy as a sponge without any crispness at all. Overall the worst Chinese of my life and a disgrace to Chinese food.

I visited on a weekday evening for dinner and ordered the vegetarian spring rolls (good) and the seasonal vegetables with rice (excellent! Vegetables still with a bit of crunch in a light, tasty sauce) and would recommend this to others. The green tea was proper loose leaf in a teapot and the food was tasty, generous portions and very reasonably priced. The staff were friendly, the restaurant warm and clean. Definitely worth a visit if you're in Newport. I believe that dim sum are on the evening menu but didn't try it when I was there.
