I cannot recommend this pub enough, this pub is a proper pub! The food was absolutely amazing everything is freshly cooked to perfection if I must say! The staff are amazing and the whole place I’m general just give off so much cosy vibes, it’s the type of pub you want after a nice walk with the dog, so been dog friendly is a bonus too. We even bought some of the honey on sale. This is a 10/10 you definitely need to visit.

This is a classic, old country pub that you must visit. Although prices for food and drinks are slightly above average, the food quality is impeccable, the service is flawless, and the atmosphere provides a nice escape. Inside it is peaceful with old decor and different rooms to serve the atmosphere you want. For example, there are busy spots in the bar room to socialise, where as other rooms provide little hideouts to relax. The venue is nevertheless very spacious despite its age. Around the front of the bar are hot traditional snacks - pork pies, cheese pasties, etc. The food to order from the kitchen tasted great and was in generous amounts. The chips, which I thought were homemade, were delicious. They had a soft, golden skin and plenty if light and fluffy potato inside. The warm baguette was nice too. I had the mozzarella, garlic butter and roasted vegetables that was a good balance of garlic and cheese with a note of pepper. The vegetables were also cooked to a consistency that was neither too hard nor soft. Everyone else also enjoyed their meals. The staff were very polite, attentive and served us with great efficiency. The outside area captures the sun but there is also an area for shelter that accommodates a fair number of punters. It is difficult to find a car parking spot at busier times, though. I would highly recommend a visit, especially for tourists who want to experience an authentic, old, English country pub.

After reading other reviews I was looking forward to our evening meal here. The guy behind the bar was very friendly and helpful. I asked for menus but was informed us that there was no cooked food in the evenings. Ham & cheese based items being the theme. Daughter chose a standard cheese buttie. “It was okay” I had a pork pie platter. 4 different halves of pork pie. The cheese & pork and pork and the chicken & stuffing were the best I’ve tasted. Disappointed and delighted in equal measure. Perfect if you don’t want a full meal and are staying at the hotel opposite!

Benn here today (28/05/23) for my wife’s birthday. The food is exceptional. I had a beef and onion baguette which was clearly freshly baked. My wife, mum and dad had the Sunday dinners. Not a thing left at end of dinner. Been here once before and the bar snack are amazing too. Staff are very friendly. Can’t fault the place. The parking is a bit limited but that’s life. This is on our top 5 list of places to go in Derbyshire. Plus a good selection of beers.

This is simply one of the best pubs in the country. Great cask beer selection, combined with tasty food set in an unspoilt interior means it's probably my favourite rural pub in the UK. One of those gems where you can sit and relax all day, we absolutely love it.

One of the best pubs I have visited in years, and as a regular pub goer and at 76 that says something. A cross between a look back at a better time a mini museum and possibly the biggest range of drinks anywhere ( well just an exaggeration) A very small bar with labyrinth of rooms all cosy and comfortable. The food---well I am sure many visit for the large range of beers and gins for example, but the food is a must for the visit. Straight forward spot on home cooking featuring the best of British. Warm welcome and good friendly service Parking a touch of a problem but any walk is worthwhile

Called in Easter Sunday lunchtime with a walking group for a drink, snack and rest as it has been a few years since me, personally visited and it was great to see the pub still as vibrant as ever. Staff really friendly and polite and the pub had a great selection of pork pies, sandwiches and other food. I ordered a pork pie and a couple of pints of blackcurrent squash which came to £6.80 (bearing in mind the pie was £2.20) which I thought nothing of until we carried on to Holbrook & The Dead Poets. Ordered squash again, same brand, with water and ice and it was 80p...yes 80 pence. What the hell Holly Bush, not really encouraging for drivers is it, how can you justify those costs in comparison??

Booked a table for a romantic Sunday lunch with hubby, it was the first time we ever visited and were surprised to have to wait so long to be served a drink at the bar and no table service for drinks. The table although nice and the atmosphere lovely, we were rather perturbed to find our table joined another that had a party of 4 join. We have never dined in such close proximity to strangers and found it quite off putting, so perhaps the website should explain this and the fact the parking in chronic shortage for such a rural 'off the beaten track' pub. We got there early and went for a walk as advised but lucky to get a parking space in the same street as the pub. That said the food was okay, my roast beef tough and roast spuds as hard as bullets, but hubby's salad good. The staff were polite professional and friendly and we enjoyed the unique experience of such a historic pub. Although we loved the actual pub we won't be returning until the parking situation resolved, it is especially too much of a risk taking elderly relatives etc there that would require disabled parking etc

I am disappointed to say that the service I received from 2 members of staff here was unacceptable; one of whom claimed to be the manager. I stood waiting to pay a tab at the bar for several minutes and was totally ignored by the girl serving other people and when she had finished serving them, she wandered off. A man then appeared on the bar who was equally as rude to me and did not apologise for the wait or for the fact the girl had walked off. He then bluntly said ‘name’ to me when asking which tab it was for. I rang the pub to complain after I left and the ‘manager’ was totally unconcerned on the phone and clearly did not see any issue whatsoever. They don’t value good customer service. Also way over priced - £7.30 for a pint and a half of ale. Would not recommend.

The Holly Bush Inn is a rustic traditional pub in Makeney/Milford/Belper that is one of the mainstays of any pub crawl between Derby and Belper (Belper has an alarmingly high number of good and great pubs for such a small town). The fairly cluttered layout identifies it as a historic pub, there are several designated areas so it won't get *too* loud even when busy [which it mostly is in the evenings]. Good food, wide variety of real ales and ciders on tap (large rather than particularly distinguished on my visit), good atmosphere. It's a 10 minute walk from the nearest bus station in Milford, a little remote and easy to miss (God bless Google Maps!). Very popular with the locals. There are several good pubs within a short radius (this one, the Strutt-on-Arms & the King Williams IV). Get a zig-zag ticket on the Sixes buses from Derby so you can hop on and off at the various stops of your crawl.

This pub I discovered by accident by seeing the sign down the lane, I am so glad I did, I keep coming back for more beers the fires give a really nice atmosphere to the place, the conservatory is also heated so you can sit in a nice warm and bright area. The food looks and smells delicious, but so far I have only sampled the pies at the bar, I am sure I will eventually dine here. It is a nice place to bring your partner to after a country walk, or on a drive during a wet and windy day. Plenty of old-world charm, it has not lost its character in any way.

Sad to say this lovely pub has massively gone downhill in the last two or more years. We discovered it seven years ago and used to go there regularly for Sunday lunch. The food was always excellent. The food came out of the kitchen really quickly - the meat, whatever it was was superb, with fresh and perfectly cooked vegetables and piping hot gravy. Then a couple of years ago we went and despite being the only people in there at 12 noon we had to wait 40 minutes for our meal, which at its best was indifferent and lukewarm. We didn't go back again until today as we were going to visit an open garden nearby and thought we would give it another try. We had booked for 12 noon and arrived and ordered two roast dinners just before 12. We got our food at 12.40 despite there only being one other table occupied in the restaurant. The food came on cold plates and the vegetables were also cold. This didn't surprise me because the waiter came out before with two roast dinners and then disappeared again. For some reason they had gone back to the kitchen and had not been kept warm. The roast potatoes were just lumps of potato without any crispiness at all. My friend had the roast lamb which was two-thirds fat. My roast dinner came with jackfruit instead of meat. I had never tried jackfruit before and now I still don't know what it is like as it was SO salty that is all you could taste. The Yorkshire pudding really needed a steak knife to cut it. People on the table next to us who came in a few minutes after us had to wait longer for their meal and were also very disappointed with it and said they wouldn't come again. Then to cap it all when we came to pay we were told it was 50p extra - this turned out to be for the gluten free element of my friend's meal. We didn't see anything to this effect on the menu and my friend, who eats out regularly, has never ever been charged extra for gluten free food before. It was only when we said she hadn't been able to eat her Yorkshire puddings because they were burned that they took the 50p off.

Nooks and crannies everywhere and even an old fashioned Snug with a working Range fire which they apparently use in the winter. It looks quite small from the front but you will be surprised when you enter the premises. They have a good selection of Real Ales and a chalk board of Guest Ales which continually change. It is full of regulars all prepared to chat. We ended up being last out of the premises having had a most enjoyable discussion with the Owner who has been there for 9 years. Parking can be challenging though but persevere.

To say it was chaotic here was an understatement. It was extremely busy on this Saturday afternoon. This is fair enough as the pub is extremely popular with locals and visitors. It took an eternity to get served and the staff were struggling to cope, with many of the food orders getting mixed up.

We stopped in here on the recommendation of quite a few people we had spoken to during our stay. It was a pleasant visit, the beer was very good and the pies and cheese excellent. Be warned though it gets very busy as it is a very popular place.

We have been here a number of times while staying with friends and love it every time. Their selection of fruity ciders are my favourite. I love the little conservatory area with the little window bar.

I visited the holly bush inn for the first time recently whilst out walking with my Mum and Dad. It is a quirky and characterful 17th century village inn complete with open fires.

Quaint, felt like we stepped back in time, two roaring fires which was cosy, beams, and friendly staff. Quite a climb up the narrow lanes but worth a visit

Gins in profusion as well as other alchoholic beverages but little in way of food - no meals , snacks and pies. Great pub atmosphere with many hooks and crannies and open fires. Very busy arround 5.45pm but relatively quiet at 7.15. Pub for locals as well as visitors. Opportunity to try new drinks before going on to find a meal elsewhere

What a beautiful pub, dog freindly, lovely staff, locals seem freindly to! ..Aside from the vast ales on offer and lager etc.. The pork pies, sandwiches and cheese board available are devine, reasonably priced, fresh and tasty, they do hot food but only wanted a light ish meal.. But they get busy over Fri to Sun.. (booking highly recommended) With Mon to Thurs been a little quieter.. And some themed nights I noticed.. Ie steak and fish were 2 of the ones coming up... It's a 17th century Inn.. With a decor unchanged much.. I found it quaint and homely and loved the open fires in the larger of the 2 rooms.. There's even a little snug!! With a fire in!!.. Would visit again and highly recommend anyone staying at Makeney Hall to walk down to it as its a very short distance from there .

What a gem of a place tucked away in a small vilkage but well worth the effort. Friendly staff who were more than happy to talk about the area. We visited in January, such a warm welcome with real fires blazing in all the little rooms. Food and real ale was delicious.

My husband & I took my elderly father-in-law here for lunch on a Saturday. It was very busy and quite hard to find a table, but we eventually found a suitable place to sit. We had the Sunday roast. The food was fine but not exceptional. The service was slow but I think this is because it was so busy. We would consider going back, but probably on a week day to avoid the crowds.

We called in for a drink on a Sunday night prior to having dinner at our hotel nearby. What a lovely local! I had a pint of their Marston's Pedigree which was beautifully kept. My wife was delighted to find some unusual real ciders and perries, including a pear and chilli one. The staff were friendly and helpful too.

We were staying just down the road in a local hotel so just had a little drink before our dinner. Very quirky little pub with some great ciders to sample and also they looked like they had some amazing pork pies to purchase. Its quite tight inside so we sat in the outdoor space which had some games to play and a kids area. A very nice pub to enjoy time with family and loved ones.
