Hobsons Patisseries in Stratford-on-Avon

On arriving we asked the waitress for a table for 2 and got told to look up stairs. We just thought we had to ask.. First impression rude. Ordered food and went up stairs then got shouted at for sitting on table of 4. To be honest if we had nt already ordered we would have left. The waitress was very abrupt. Other people sat down and another 2 people were spoken to by the waitress abruptly and they got up and left. 2 people sitting on a 4 seater I get under occupancy but being rude about it is not on. If they have no where to sit what’s the issue you would rather lose custom Obviously this waitress needs training or should nt be dealing front of house . On a good note food was lovely

Bacon sandwich was a massive disappointment. Small bread roll, the cheapest, tasteless greasy streaky bacon. Not worth the money. Informed the waitress who just laughed.

The rudest staff. I’ve been here a few times and never normally had a problem however I’ve always noticed how rude they can be. everytime I’ve been in, there has been complaints on the way the talk to people however today I went in went up to order and the two behind the counter were awful and made the visit embarrassing. Asked for a baguette, man kept saying white or brown bread (the do baguette, wrap or sandwich) so I kept repeating baguette as I thought he’d misheard me and thought I’d asked for a sandwich because of course you’d say white or brown baguette not bread. For them to be laughing and being rude behind the counter was a joke. Instead of explaining they do white or brown baguettes. The worst part is they were rude to the customer in front off me too because she didn’t speak English. Won’t be returning

The food was delicious, the service was quick and punctual.The girl with the tattooed hand was particularly skilful. My friends and I had lunch here😇 My friends said the same, so I can only recommend this restaurant, one of the best in the area! 🥰

Do not order a quality bacon bap, unless you want quality fat. It was disgusting

Great place for afternoon tea and cakes..... Even do proper cream teas.... So much better than Cafe Nero which is a couple of doors down.... Impromptu stop and well worth it.... Super desserts and cakes

I politely asked for a table for 4 people. The waitress pointed in the direction of 2 low sofas & I was told to get a menu & order at the counter. I asked could we sit at a table after as we wanted to eat lunch. She said in an unbelievably rude & aggressive manner.. "just for you, I will tell you, again!!!, get a menu & order at the counter"!! Fortunately her rudeness happened immediately when we went in, resulting in my immediate 'no, she's being rude' & prompt exit, before experiencing any more of her shameful behaviour or provide their business with our money. Genuinely glad to have escaped & walked out & won't ever return. Basil Fawlty, but without the laughs. Plenty of choice of lovely cafes & restaurants elsewhere in Stratford Upon Avon.

Avoid .Absolutely awful, stale cake , two different sorts totally stale left us with upset stomach . Avoid. I will never return here

Twice now I’ve been into this cafe and been treated very rudely by the same member of staff. The first time because there was not any space for us but this information could have been delivered kindly and the second time on a different day we tried to enter at 3pm only to be told it was closed (it closed at 4pm). We just wanted to come for some cake as a belated Mother’s Day but I just don’t think we will come again. It’s a shame as the food is great as are other members of staff.

It's a really nice place to have traditional hot pie. Ordered curry chicken hot pie, fantastic with that sauce. Beautiful unicorn fantasy cake, not so sweet, which is delicious

Not great the leather tub chairs should be fixed or chucked in the skip they are tired and seriously worn down and torn in places. I come to visit with my grandparents and I was shocked at how dirty the place was. No higher rating than 1star star than mc donalds 2 minutes walk down the road. We had chipped saucers with our cappuccino and lattee. After this we decided to go elsewhere where for lunch because of this experience we won't be going back there again

Superb scones! Visited here for lunch with the family. The quiches were. Superb and served with a good quantity of salad. The baguette was lovely and again plentiful salad and crisps. The afternoon tar was excellent value and delicious. The scones were absolutely delicious light tasty and not dry! The toilets were lovely and clean as well as the restaurant. The staff were friendly and the whole ambiance was lovely even though it was extremely busy. Well done.

At last a cafe where you can get tea at tea time. Lovely apple cake and nice cuppa after 4pm. As someone who travels around the UK a lot I have really struggled to find somewhere that isn’t part of a massive, tax dodging chain to get some refreshments later in the day. Hobson’s also allowed me to take my dog inside which is also a massive plus. I’ll definitely return next time I’m in Stratford.

Cream tea misleading, 2 scones but only one cup with the pot of coffee. I was refused a second cup and paid £2.95 for another pot of coffee, just for the cup. Coffee was bitter so I wish I hadn’t bothered. My daughter couldn’t drink it and asked for a refund, which they did allow. Staff were abrupt, borderline rude. Perhaps being situated in a high tourist area, they aren’t concerned with returning customers. The scone was 9/10 though. Only redeeming thing about the place, is the cakes.

We had been wandering around Stratford when we came across this place for a light lunch. The place was buzzing, and we were shown to a table. We ordered a baguette and a cream tea, this was with us in minutes. It was superb. The lunch was simple, but very well executed. The scones for the cream tea were some of the best we’ve had. I would very happily go back here again if we were in Stratford.

Come across this place bu chance and were enticed in by the idea of a cream tea for our Italian family. Firstly we were shown to one table being first in the queue then told to move because someone behind us pushed ahead. Finally seated we waited in the long queue and not impressed with staff behind the counter. Cream tea was nice but some manners from staff would have made it a much more pleasant visit. Instead we left feeling like we would t visit again

Claims to have gluten free options. Doesn’t. Out of the vast menu of sweet and savoury items, all I could have was a chocolate brownie and after I suffered symptoms I suspect even that had been contaminated. The manager was defensive and claimed it was too expensive to have eg gluten free bread in the freezer or put baked potatoes on the menu. As there are plenty of other restaurants and cafes in Stratford, including many small independent ones who do good gluten free options, we won’t be coming here again.

The place was so noisy - staff were clearing the plates behind our table and we couldn’t hear a thing with all the clattering. It felt very frenetic - not the sort of place to come and chill and have a cuppa. Ordered two scones with jam and cream and they came with one small scoop of cream and a tiny jar of jam. When we asked for more they said we would have to pay more. It was spread on so thin you could hardly taste it! Eventually they said we could have enough for the second scone but it felt a bit tight and like we had to beg for it. The cakes on the counter all looked bought in, not homemade. The scone was nice enough but the place just doesn’t have a nice vibe - won’t be back.

The vibe of vintage and ancient fits the historical city quite well. Liked the consistency in design, decoration, and the staff's uniform. We went for cream tea, which my friend chose; I had Irish coffee. Scone were ok, but not soft enough, in my opinion. My coffee was a bit more bitter than I thought for that type of drink. Ordered a slice of cake, which was also quite ok, went well with the drinks. There was a long waiting line. There were tables for groups of 4 and above, rather than 2. So, if 2 people occupy a table of 4, it will reduce the effectiveness of sitting other groups. The service was a bit chaotic; the one took our order was a bit unfriendly, yet we got what we wanted at the end.

Hi we have been dining at Hobson’s for over 20 years. Today we went in and were told we could only go upstairs. I have a bad knee and told the lady who said we had to go upstairs. A lot of downstairs was empty and we said we would go elsewhere. Terrible customer service.

Well where to start. On entering we came across a rude waitress who was snappy and full of attitude. We asked if there was seating and she snapped that we would wait 10 minutes. We said we would wait. Once we were seated and coming to the end of our cake and coffee, the same waitress started to clear our table over me. Told her we hadn't finished. I said I know you need the table but it's rude. She started to shout at me telling me she was just clearing table. I told her not to shout at me. The place was packed, totally humiliating. I spoke to the manager who apologised and said she has had lots of complaints. She was even shouting her mouth off at him. Will not be returning, customer service is non existent.

Quirky coffee shop with various rooms, ground floor and first floor, with atmospheric beams. Helpful, friendly and efficient staff. Lovely mulled wine followed by cream tea - I know, too indulgent, but we were on a day trip! Excellent value for money.

We went there today for a group booking , the service was very nice and staff very friendly and helpful . We had booked in advance for 60 people and all our needs were accommodated. The manager looked after us very well and I would highly recommend this place as the food is 10/10. It’s a very unique and traditional patisserie and will definitely come back .

If you want to come to a place with overpriced food, small portions, confusing menu and staff who won’t offer any empathy or alternatives to issues with the food- then you’ve come to the right place! The drinks are lovely, but honestly save your money with everything else. Also; their bacon baguette is not served in an actual baguette and they will fight you over this. A slice of bread is not a baguette, so stop charging £1.50 extra on the basis that it’s a baguette. Whoever writes the menu, please google what a baguette is. Bread rant over.

DO NOT USE THIS ESTABLISHMENT!!!!!!!!! To start with, I'd like to point out that the food was very nice. The problem, and it's a very big problem, Is the staff. If I could give one star, I would. The attitude of staff is appalling. The waitresses are just rude, not able to speak English very well and dismissive. The staff at the counter are plainly inconvenienced by having to serve customers. I was overcharged. An item on the menu was£3.99, I was charged £4.99. When I queried this, I was told that the price had increased. I asked for the £1 back and was met with a three way argument from two members of staff and comments in their own language from the waitresses. I never received the money that I was overcharged, despite promises that I would get it. Stratford-upon-Avon do not need people like you and you give the service industry a bad name.

Giant Hobson's Scone for my mother in law went down a treat!

A friend recommended this place to me. I tried my chance visited here first time, and it was absolutely worth it, the staff were very friendly nice & classic place, the Food was amazing, big portions with a fair price, Will definitely visit more times.

Visited here this afternoon having previously visited many years ago whilst in Stratford. We were really looking forward to it for old times sake, but unfortunately we were met with huge disappointment. We arrived at 2.45pm and having looked at the menu decided to have a plain scone with lemon curd and clotted cream and a fruit scone with strawberry jam, once at the till I was told all the scones were freshly baked that morning and they were already made up and the only option was a fruit scone with strawberry jam, slightly disappointed I accepted what was on offer and we waited for them to arrive. Once they arrived we very unimpressed as the “freshly baked this morning scones” were stale, they were hard, crunchy and extremely dry. Having previously visited Hobsons Patisserie we received warm soft freshly baked scones with fresh clotted cream and lemon curd, yet this cream was not clotted cream either and goes against what is stated on the menu, and it didn’t appear to be jam but more of a strawberry sauce. I complained to a member of staff who took the scones away to be checked by the manager, in the meantime several customers were turned away at 3.10pm using the excuse that they were closing early due to lack of custom which made no sense at all when their opening hours clearly state 9am-4pm. We were approached by the manager who said the scones were infact baked that morning but could not explain why they tasted dry, stale and crunchy, he also refused to give us a refund as apparently he had called the owner of the shop that agreed that no refund be given as it was against their company policy. He then said that the scones could not be given back to us as they had been thrown in the bin as per our instruction, when it was a member of staff that took them from us when we mentioned that they were not fresh. This establishment has clearly had new owners/management since our last visit, and unfortunately we will be taking our custom elsewhere next time we visit Stratford as there are many places to stop for a bite to eat. As I have previously mentioned we had big expectations from Hobsons after a previous visit many years ago, we planned this break a couple of weeks ago and had made a point of including a visit here to be on the agenda. No choice was given in jam selection as per the menu, nor have we been anywhere and received a scone already made up for us, it’s usually down to personal preference how much jam and cream is added. Needless to say we will not be returning as we feel very let down by this experience.

best option to go visit again. Highly recommend the place for anyone visiting Stratford upon Avon. Try the GIANT SCONE.

excellent service and excellent coffee and cake

I’ve been trying to find a place to have a coffee and I see hobsons on the Henley street and we go in . It was nice atmosphere and nice staff receiving as with a table for 4 people. And we had that coffee and a baguette as well and I can say was everything excellent start from the coffee food and the staff . I really enjoyed and I highly recommend the place really nice!!!

This morning I was served by a lovely lady, Ely, she brought a smile to my face with her lovely service and the cappuccino she made me was fantastic. It was a wonderful experience, thank you Hobsons patisserie for having a barista like Ely!

I've been there with my family from Hungary after seeing their Titkok profile and it came out As we wanted. A good looking guy greeted us at the door and told us where to sit and to order from the counter. The counter worked bestly As itt could, the coffe and the cakes were amazing, and I can Tell the food was made to order which I find excellent. The waiters gently offered to carry our tray which we accepted and we had a nice chat with them. When we were about to leave and we got dressed one of the waiter staff nicely if they can start to clean our table and wished us a very nice day.

Have been going here maybe twice a year! Really lovely! Went this week,sat down and was totally shocked by the attitude of a waitress! So so rude! totally embarrassed as were the rest of the customers sitting around us! Once everyone had picked their jaws off the floor, we walked out! Never to return! Awful

Laughably poor service today. was waiting in line to order, and was next in line. I'd been waiting about 3-4 minutes to be served next. There seems to be a very inefficient system of the staff having to wait for an order to be fully completed before they take the order of the next person. I asked I could order mine while I waiting (there was 4 staff members all watching the coffee being made behind the counter) and I was rudely told that I wasn't stood in the right place for the queue (I was stood right next to the counter, and I'd never been before, and the staff member saw me stood there). I told him I was there before the other people 'in the queue' and he said he'd have to wait to take my order. When I saw another staff member put a coffee on a tray with his finger touching the rim of the cup, I thought that was enough, and walked out. I really dislike the canteen style of taking your own try of drinks to your table, when I'm in a cafe, I like things brought to the table for me, it's a cafe not a school canteen. Plenty of other coffee places nearby, try cafe Nero next door, always a nice coffee in there.

Baguettes and cream teas excellent quality and reasonably priced. Service friendly and efficient. Call here every time we visit the area.

This café gets a lot of custom because of its excellence location, not far from Shakespeare’s birthplace in the centre of Stratford Avon. We visited on a Tuesday when a number of cafés are closed in the town. The staff are a bit disorganised. It would definitely benefit from table service. We did not really enjoy our visit as the coffee was cold and bitter.

Absolutely brilliant, if you want to experience proper old Elizabethan tour you should visit this place, staff were very polite food was delicious money worth it.

Very busy and quite frenetic but this old building (including upstairs) has many corners to find a quiet place to sit. We enjoyed our pies and salad (one spiced vegetable and one steak and potato) and were able to continue our exploration of Stratford suitably refreshed and relaxed.

Visited Stratford many times, first time that we came across this delightful pace! Lots of tempting treats, looking very tasty and very well displayed. Far more variety and best display than any other shop we saw in Stratford. I had a slice of the zesty lime cheesecake as a take away …. Sublime!! Would recommend it. I also had a slice of the Lemond curd sponge: it tasted very ’eggy’ I couldn’t eat it as the egg taste took completely away the flavour of the lemon curd and the enjoyment of the cake. I put it in the bin. I’d suggest a tweak… that something to cut out that egg taste is added to the mixture eg vanilla extract or whatever works as it was disappointing and a loss of my money. But…. I would revisit if ever we take another trip to Stratford. The staff were very friendly and that is a great way to ensure repeat visits along with the general vibe of this charming place. We may eat in next time.

Absolutely fabulous place in the heart of Stratford. It was packed around lunch time but we found a space to squeeze in. YOu order at the counter, they work like lightning to get your order which you take to a table. We had the cream tea which was fantastic and so reasonable after places like Bettys where you pay 30 quid. This was 7 quid and just what you need. Warm, atmospheric place with wonderful staff. Can't recommend it highly enough.

Stopped for a impromptu snack on our day in Stratford. We stopped as the window display of cakes was amazing, the Giant scone really looked delicious. We were welcomed by a staff member and seated quickly. The counter staff were polite, courteous and very efficient, cutting through a busy line with little waiting. We placed our order and it was quickly prepared, the food was incredible. The Giant scone lived up to our eyes expectation and was so filling, you wont need anything else! The restaurant was very busy and clean and tidy. The restaurant is also dog friendly which is a plus for owners. Overall I would highly recommend Hobsons Patisseries for either a brief snack or a lunch menu that has a wide variety of reasonably priced meals.

Pot of tea missing from order, was quickly provided. Two scones but only a small pot of cream and very small jam enough for one scone, although very yummy was disappointed with scrimpiness of order presented to me. Was it value for money, maybe but would have paid a bit more for a proper afternoon scone and tea. Manager needs to rethink what he is supplying to improve customer satisfaction, its not always best to have a cheap and cheerful menu. Really rated at best 5/10.

After reading the comments I'm still not sure why we went, old times sake ??? It used to be our go to place, after today never again. It was complete mayhem behind the counter, so many people shouting and pushing and getting nothing done. I shoukd have walked out then, however I didn't. The scones were dry, a decent amount of jam and cream might have helped. The tea was so weak I drank it black, and decaf coffee cold, due to being ready long before it was my turn to order food. A waste of time and money.

We were a party of 9 who ordered the giant scones with tea… the new owner was very attentive and the staff looked after us extremely well! We had a small room upstairs room to ourselves which was brilliant. They even provided us with cake boxes for us to take our leftovers home as the scones were huge!! 🤗

Popular and busy tearoom with a delicious range of cakes and afternoon tea options. We popped in for coffee & cake and were seated upstairs, which has steep stairs. Sadly they they'd run out of scones by 3pm but would definitely go back.

We visited for a drink I ordered 2 ice cream milkshakes at £3 each and a green tea. The milkshake didn't have any ice cream in it and milkshake was from a Aldi premade chilled carton which cost about £1:10 for a litre , they give me about 500 ml per glass with the green tea I asked for tea bag to be left out of the teapot because the person does not like strong tea and it wasn't left out and I think it was Aldi tea bag

As other reviews have said the cakes are delicious and price reasonable, coffee was not so nice. However, staff behind the till extremely rude. When approaching the counter they were too busy talking to each other (happy to wait but at least acknowledge your customer when serving them), and then when being served I was looked upon as though it was an inconvenience. When taking my order the gentleman serving (tall/bald) had zero manners, barked at me constantly until had order and pushed card machine at me without so much as a please or thank you. Felt very unwelcome, and will stick to our usual cafe in future where customer service is a priority!

Came in for afternoon tea and was excited to try clotted cream with scones. The tea was good. The clotted cream however was still a bit frozen and tasted like whatever was in their freezer. It was freezer burnt as well. It was disgusting. The scone was dry. And I could tell the sponge cake had also come from the freezer. It had the same freezer burnt cream in it, same not so fresh taste. It was all really gross. Definitely disappointing.

Nice place to have tea and coffee.

On arrival we were told more seats upstairs without the manager even checking if any were free. We ordered 2 cream teas. The scones were dry and a minimum amount of jam and cream came with them.( No choice of what jam despite menu offering a choice. ) As we ate, the manager continued to send people upstairs despite there being no more room available. On leaving I asked where the toilets were and the manager was rude in his reply as though I hadn't spent money in his establishment. We wont be returning. Manners cost nothing and customer service is key in the food industry. Such a shame as this place has real potential.
