food poisoning 3 hours after. Buffet needs supervision on cross contamination from people . Spewed for 3 hours. Then some. Disappointment end to good meal.

Just a fabulous night at a lovely, atmospheric restaurant with the best veggie and vegan food I've ever had.

Excellent food and relaxed atmosphere. It was Italian night when I went, and it was the first time I had been in around 30 years. The main thing I noticed was how the quality of the food has improved. Whilst now vegan and vegetarian , it is a step up from the cheap student fare I remember. I enjoyed both vegan and vegetarian options despite normally making a meat option my normal choice. Service was attentive without the pressure to move on through the courses. I will definitely be visiting Hitchcock's much sooner than than my previous 30 year hiatus, next time I am in Hull.

Outstanding restaurant, never disappoints, their food and customer service is outstanding each time we go. The atmosphere is also out of this world, dim lighting, quirky decorations in an old 1700s building. We had the greek night most recently which was outstanding, whilst everything is vegetarian 90% is vegan which is amazing.

WOW where do I start, it was our first visit to Hitchcock’s and it wasn’t a disappointment. When we booked we were asked if there was anything we didn’t ear or was allergic to, my husband told them I didn’t like peppers. Well to my surprise when we arrived and was seated at our table the chef came across to discuss my dislike to peppers. He then proceeded to tell me he had prepared some of the courses without peppers, he then brought them to our table. All the staff were wonderful and very helpful when we asked about the restaurant and its heritage, as it is a very old building dating back to the 17/18th century. We’ve booked to come again in March to try the Middle Eastern menu so we’ll see you again soon

A vegetarian restaurant in an old quirky building with low level lighting and candles on every table. There's different levels of flooring separated by steps and the help yourself buffet style hot food is flavoursome, fresh and varied. Situated in the old part of town, you're transported back in time before you arrive at the door. A gem of find within the city of Hull.

An amazing experience. Great food (we had a traditional christmas roast) and lovely staff/owners. The inside has a warm and fun atmosphere and overall one of the best vegetarian places we've been.

Pretty much the best vegan/vegetarian restaurant one can visit. I’ve had multiple celebratory meals here and feel so lucky to live locally- it’s so good that I’d be willing to travel a good distance for it. Usually all but maybe one or two things at the buffet are vegan (this is always clearly delineated by staff) and the selection of desserts is otherworldly. Such a unique experience, delicious food, great concept & it’s even bring your own booze! Don’t know how it could get much better. This is pretty much the pinnacle of vegan dining in my opinion. Go.

Second time at this amazing vegetarian restaurant. Always amazing food here and wonderfully welcoming staff. Very unique restaurant as the first person to book gets to choose the food style, it was Italian on this night. So many different dishes to choose from and the cakes are incredible. We went last night (27/4/23)as a group from Holderness Grange Hedon ...it was our first time and was excellent... My partner is gluten free and he was catered for so well and all his food was brought to him and he came home with a doggy bag as there was so much for him... We will definitely be returning especially at Christmas when my son is visiting over the Christmas week... He is a vegetarian and it will be wonderful to take him to a restaurant with so much choice... Especially the puddings... Thankyou so much for a fantastic evening ... The staff cannot do enough for you,. We can't wait to return🙂 Nella and Terry x

I am a committed carnivore I love eating meat, steak, Bacon sausages, black pudding anything. I went to the restaurant with a group of friends to celebrate a vegetarian friend's birthday who wished to dine here. It was absolutely fantastic I loved the food there was so much choice from the buffet. The food was wonderful and I did not miss not having any meat. Sometime steak and chips can be a bit boring. But the food here, the flavours the textures the sheer variety most of it i had never ever had before. It was absolutely brilliant. It was a nice place to eat lovely atmosphere. I would definitely go again.

Best restaurant and meal we’ve ever had! Brilliant concept for a restaurant (all you can eat buffet and whoever books first chooses theme) - chef incredibly talented to be able to cater this. We went for our valentines meal and it was Italian theme. All the food was incredible and so much choice for mains and dessert on buffet. I am Vegan and the options were great- anything that wasn’t vegan the chef even made me vegan portions of these especially for me!! ☺️ Couldn’t recommend more- amazing value for money.

Great vegetarian restraunt serves buffet style meals from all around the world. Must try for even carnivores. Selection of desserts are mmmmmm along with the food. Highly recommend

Highly recommend this lovely restaurant! Our friends booked it an if I’m honest I probably wouldn’t have chosen it… I was so impressed the food was lovely, staff couldn’t have been more friendly and great value for money. Go hungry!

Eaten and enjoyed food here lots of times and always 100% satisfied. Celebrated my husbands 60th birthday at a different venue but had the Hitchcocks crew do our catering. Oh my they didn't disappoint, the theme was Jamaican and it was outstanding. Everything was eaten , we had a all Vegan menu and ourselves and our guests gave it a 10/10. So different from other restaurants. Exceptional good value. Our fare was Tex-Mex. Great choice of mains and fabulous desserts. I was too greedy to leave room for the coffee.

Great to find a truly vegetarian restaurant. Although the evenings are themed, there is a great choice of all that you want to eat main and dessert. It's a quirky restaurant with unusual decoration. We had a thoroughly great evening of Italian food, and went home stuffed. We'll be back to try a different theme next time, even though it's a 45 minute drive from where I live. Addition 19/08/2022: First time back after the lockdowns and it was Lebanese tonight. I was a bit anxious as I'd never it before, I needn't have been as it was very tasty. It was a very nice atmosphere and nothing was too much trouble. Looking forward to our next visit.

Totally querky hidden place at the back of Hulls old town. Really tasty food I loved it and great to have a selection. The place itself wasn't what I expected at all. It's very oldy worldy. But it adds to the character.

Lovely hearty food with great selection from buffet. Theme tonight was Italian and Mediterranean. The interior was very interesting and unique! Highly recommend!

Hitchcocks needs no introduction or explanation really as it’s reputation is quite well known, but I’m blown away every time we come. Before we first came we were apprehensive in case there weren’t many vegan options and everything would end up not suitable for us, but there’s rarely a single item that doesn’t have a vegan option (which is understandable as sometimes vegan alternatives can taste quite different - cheese), and most things end up being vegan anyway. Recently we visited and asked about the Yorkshire puddings and a plate of vegan ones was brought to us specially, there’s really no request that’s too much. The food has always been amazing and that houmous is something else! We’ve brought sceptical non-veggies in the past also and they’ve loved the food too. The staff are friendly and we always leave incredibly full, and hope to continue visiting for years to come!

Love this place always go out of their way to accommodate anyone's needs - The last few times we have been I was cooked things especially for me. Food is always varied and delicious - piece of advice dont just pile everything on your plate at once as the flavours are too nice to just mix together - just go back a few times and try different things. another plus you can take your own alcohol. Highly Recommend x

As a non-vegetarian with a lot of allergies I was initially skeptical about dining here but the Owner and Head Chef on tonight's Vietnamese night exceeded all expectations! Felt well looked after and every dish prepared for me was delicious (so much so I had to take some away because I was so full!) Highly highly recommend.

What can I say? My favourite restaurant in Hull. Over the years Jane and her team have catered for many of my birthday celebrations looking after 20+ guests. The food is always amazing and, as a non-veggie, I have no idea how they make vegetarian food taste so good. Its a wonderful 'eat as much as you like' buffet, with fabulous desserts. If you book earlier enough, you also get to chose the evening's 'food theme.' The team were all being 'covid-safe' which was also reassuring. A firm favourite and wholeheartedly recommended.

Probably my favourite place to eat in the city, excellent food, all you can eat (First person to book gets to pick the theme). Largely Vegan (Which has increased year on year, 100% Veggie and friendly staff. You will leave so full you feel like exploding so definitely get your moneys worth.

This was for a graduation dinner (Congrats !), with Hitchcock’s having a lot of hype surrounding it as it is an exclusive veggie/vegan restaurant in this elusive part of the country. Having performed extensive research on this establishment, and the varying menu varieties on the website, we did not expect to be surprised by our meal out here...as there are numerous pleasant and fewer not so pleasant reviews, a dining experience to polarise. As a concept we are there with them, however you can’t expect to run with a different menu each night and maintain quality in each dish. Our night was Thai night, with some of the dishes hitting the spot, for example the pad thai and the cucumber salad, as well as the corn ball fritters, but some others were in a bath of oil, which seeped into everything else on the plate. We think that the desserts weren’t really necessary or fit any aspect of the cultural menu, and could save the venue some space and money, and most diners are probably full anyway. That being said, LOTS of vegan options. Food aside, the staff were lovely and there is a cheap corkage. The venue itself is a bit dark, the decor is quirky and daft. Hopefully there isn’t too much food waste after the night ends as it is a buffet !

Oh my, what a fantastic meal and experience this was😊 I really don't want to give a great review otherwise I might not get in again BUT our visit was superb from beginning to end. Very safe for nervous diners, the service was first class, one of our party needed gluten free and nothing was too much bother. The food though...the range, the selection, the quality just couldn't be faulted, seriously not one fault apart from we ate too much, then ate some more...then a little bit more😂 Five stars isn't enough, I'd happily give ten stars.

Really good food and lovely hosts. Great value and with a wide variety of tasty dishes. Hasn't changed in years reflecting how unique it is. Highly recommended whether vegetarian or not.

We enjoyed yet another wonderful Mexican takeaway last night, and it was absolutely delicious! Every bite was mouth wateringly tasty and I feel such a pig after scoffing two large plates full - but I still managed the deserts 😉 Thanks guys - really looking forward to our next takeaway from you

Delicious food and super original concept , I love trying the specialities from different countries. Most of the food is vegan and all is vegetarian.

The best tasting meal out I have had in quite a while, exceptionally friendly staff, lavish amounts of dishes across the table and a wide selection of cakes and deserts to top it off (if you left room).An excellent place to eat out and an excellent price for what you get.This review was shortly prior to the new lockdown regime, so looking forward to the next opening.

Italian vegetarian night, eat as much as you like. A selection of wines. Ring the door bell on the right and someone will collect you from the first floor. A much larger restaurant than you would imagine. Good for large groups with vegan options. Recommend to book as it opens from 20:00 pm. My photo 6/10 of the barman wiping the glass has hit over 1,000,000 views today 16/08/20 took while on holiday in Hull January 2020 after the Russian Ballet.

Tried the newly introduced takeaway service and so glad we did. Easy to order and collect, disposable packaging (as you’d expect) and still warm when we got home (except the 4 dessert selections of course). Mediterranean menu today and great choice and brilliant value for money.So glad you’re back Jane and team, keep up this brilliant service (until normal service can resume) and we’ll be dining out/in/at home very soon

I ordered a Mexican meal for 4 last weekend and have to say hitchcocks' food is even better than I remembered! Food arrived exactly on time and was delivered in a safe and courteous manner, and wow! What a mountain of food for the money! All of it delicious and more than enough for a family of 4, in fact the leftovers where just as enjoyable the following day for dinner. The deserts were to die for, and again, plenty of choice and generous portions. Can't wait until I can get onto the next takeaway list.

This has to be one of the oldest veggie places in the north. Ive been going here since I found out that there is more to life than the meat and two veg/staple northern diet. I converted many a carnivore into eating 'rabbit food' here. Decor is decadent and well, how a veggie place should look. Must try it

My favourite veggie restaurant has begun a delivery/ collection service due to the lockdown. The fact it sells out within hours says a lot. Very organised and helpful sustem, delivered on the dot by lovely, polite driver. Tasty starter, ample main... will enjoy dessert tomorrow as just too full! Thank you Hitchcocks. Enjoyed spring rolls and samosas with dips, folllowed by thai red curry, noodles, rice, sticky aubergines and sesame salad.The dips and aubergine were especially sublime!

One night was particularly memorable when I was a student in Hull between 1991 and 1994. It was the night when some new friends whom I'd met on a project suggested we go to a new vegetarian restaurant. In the narrow Dickensian streets of Hull's old town we collected at the bottom of a long flight of steps and ascending, knocked on the door and after a brief conversation were admitted to a place that I knew from the first second was very special indeed. A lot of time has passed since that day, but I never forgot that evening and many years later on 1st March 2020 I found myself again in Hull and was delighted to find Hitchcock's was still there. Thankfully - the magic was still there too. The food is still absolutely delicious. We were there on Spanish night - and we savoured every Spanish dish you can think of. Need I say that you don't have to be vegetarian to love it? What an atmosphere. What a place. What amazing people who had the vision to create this place all those years ago. A place that still brings people together to enjoy spending time together over food that makes you feel altogether better. I even met again the chef who had been around at the start all those years ago. Thank you and I hope I'll be back before another 26 years pass by!

We travelled from essex and inverness. We were not disappointed. Fantastic venue, food was wonderful. Staff were very happy to share their food experiences. Our Etheopian banquet was superb. The okra, omg really tasty, well presented and plentiful. A most wonderful evening. Thank you.

Great food, great service, great atmosphere

What can I say about this place. Honestly doesn't give it justice in writing this review but I am compelled to. It is one of those places where one can escape from the hustle and bustle of life outside the walls of this eccentric former nightclub. The extensive vegetarian dishes on display created by Bruce are consistently of high standard. Both Jane and Bruce offer not a service but an experience, an experience that is not often found in this age and one in which will always bring me back to this delightful spot in Hull's Old Town. Keep doing what you are doing. I am no vegan or vegetarian but I am swayed. Maybe once or twice a week! Whole lotta love, C.

Last night myself and seven friends all went to this amazing restaurant. The building is quirky as it is very old and in a historic part of the city. On booking, my husband informed the lady that I had an allergy to Capsicum and Jalapeno peppers which proved not to be a problem for them. In fact I received the best personal service from Bruce the chef that I have ever had in any restaurant. He made me a special dip to have with my starter and then walked round the buffet with me to advise and make sure that I had nothing that would make me ill. All the food was delicious and very well presented and with lots of choice. All the staff were very friendly and efficient. You can take your own wine too, (even though there is a bar) with just £1 corkage per bottle. We will definitely be going back again and cannot recommend this restaurant highly enough. A great team, well done all of you.

Had my second visit to Hitchcocks last week and we decided to bring some friends from Scarborough as we felt they’d appreciate the diversity and quirkiness of the restaurant. It was a real hit! Everyone loved it. Our first visit was Italian themed and our second - Indian. I must say I wasn’t buzzed about the idea of Indian as it feels quite generic these days, but boy was I wrong - best Indian cuisine I’ve had in a long time! Looking forward to it again now. Everything about Hitchcocks is cool. Down to the building, the quirky decor, the candles on the tables, the feeling of being somewhere hidden away. I love being able to show non-veggies how delicious vegetarian/vegan food is. It’s very much a restaurant for everyone - non-exclusive and non-judgmental. The cakes at the end are delicious and generous, and I think they serve up really nice coffee. Great atmosphere, the staff are really friendly and welcoming. I think I spoke to the owner - very nice chap and after it’s long run in Hull seems genuinely happy to be there. And it’s such good value for moneyThis place is real a find. I’m kicking myself that I’ve lived in Hull eight years and only just discovered it. Determined to try every themed night going. :D

I had some friends visiting from London, we’re all vegetarian/vegan and wanted to show off Hull to them, so where better to go than Hitchcocks and they did not disappoint!! I’d rang up to book a table but with it been Christmas they were full but later that day I received a call back saying she’d got a table for the 6 of us! Yay!! We went on Indian night. Delicious samosas with green pepper chutney for starters then so many absolutely delicious curries, mainly vegan which was perfect! So so tasty!!!! And then the deserts!!! So much choice!!! Brilliant food, lovely staff!!! My friends were hugely impressed and a bit jealous that we have hitchcocks here and they don’t have you in London!!! Thank you for a fabulous night!

Went on a Spanish night and the food was amazing! Might be my new favourite restaurant.

Nice concept, very busy, upbeat atmosphere and friendly service in an interesting and historic building. Was it worth £22 a head? On the night we went it was a Spanish menu. Unfortunately, the food was "quantity over quality" , all potatoes overcooked, fries soggy, the buffet felt carb orientated. The logistics around queuing need addressing and the ladies toilet was blocked and dirty. The puddings, although well made and plentiful, were over facing in quantity of choice. The whole place felt shabby and not well maintained. So, if you're feeling very hungry and aren't bothered about the quality, it may be worth the money. Personally, i think it's a great idea but needs to smarten up and improve the quality, less can be more.

As someone who's been meat free pretty much all my life and then Vegan post 20 Hitchcock's is a godsend; tasty food and one which switches up the food based on the first person to order. With an all you can eat system which includes deserts it's impossible to leave without eating so much you feel like you're going to explode and yet after probably 50+ visits I'll do it every time.

Very filling, great service and brilliant wide range of options for people who aren't meat lovers, I am a meat lover but I have gained a fellow liking to there wide range of veagan/ vegetarian options available. I would recommend this for a nice date with your girl when ur about 4 months in. And the bathroom decor is incredible.

Whilst staying in Hull I wanted to find a restaurant which catered for vegans and a gluten free diet. I also have a rice intolerance and when I rang to book the owner and manager went out of their way to cater for me. It's simply brilliant. You have starters served on the table and then go up for a large variety of vegetarian dishes on a buffet (all labelled in terms of whether vegan) and the chef informed me which dishes included gluten. After being thoroughly stuffed, we then went up for puddings and then had coffees. The food was delicious and the service was friendly and informative. Absolutely excellent and recommend to all. Thanks for a lovely evening!

An institution. The type of passion project that's rare to find. Hitchcock's dining experience is unconventional but delightful. Eat here and find yourself entirely charmed and won over by warmth, character and personality. Owned by the same couple for over 20 years, this remains a firm favourite. Long may it prosper!
