We have visited this local pub for many years but not for a while for obvious reasonsWent for lunch today & ordered some squid & some tempura prawns. The squid was fine with a good spicy sauce but the prawns……well they were not tempura but a very thick batter & more like shrimp than prawn! Really poor qualityAnyway we mentioned our disappointment to the waitress who said she would talk to the manager……result nothing nada Not interested in our complaint. So no problem……plenty of other options but if they continue to serve poor quality food and ignore customers they will not survive very long

Came for dinner with another couple, and then we met friends for drinks afterwards.Loved the food. It is so good to see a menu which wasn't just the same old 'pub grub', but wasn't pretentious either. Even our vegetarian was happy! Personally went with the suggestion of the Roasted Chicken Supreme, and it was most excellent. Extremely well priced for the quality and amounts of what we were served.Staff were friendly and good fun, lots of conversation which made for a good atmosphere, and they knew their stuff when it came to the drinks they were serving.Final word - great pub, great staff, great food. Can't wait to come back.

We come here for a meal after being recommended by a family friend and what a find this was! A beautiful old English country pub in a little village. The flowers make the place stand out and look very welcoming and the staff as soon as we walked through the door couldn’t do enough for us. It was a Friday evening and there was a few tables eating and the staff were very knowledgeable about the menu. I opted for the crispy squid and my partner had the the pate. Both beautifully presented and tasty. For the mains I had the chick pea curry and for him he had lamb shank. Meat was very tender and fell off the bone. A very hearty classic dish but done to perfection. The curry was full of flavour and had a good kick to it. I had space for the flaming creme brûlée and wow!! Never have I had a brûlée still alight when it arrived to the table. Had a real wow factor to it. Good selection of wines. We will definitely be back. Worth every penny!

Even after reading recent reviews we decided to give it a chance as previous reviews were very good and decided to give them a chance - big mistake!!We arrived and were greeted by a young girl who showed us to our table, there were only 2 other people in the pub who weren't eating, we were given our menus and ordered our drinks, when the drinks arrived we asked what the specials were and it was Soup nothing else!! The menu itself wasn't really great but we ordered, I had the Roasted Chicken Supreme, Fondant Potato, Leek Terrine, Braised Gem Lettuce, Bread Sauce, Roast Chicken Sauce and my friend had the Pan Fried Seabass, Bed Of Seafood Linguine, Parsley. After around 50 minutes the food arrived, the Seafood Linguine was served in a tiny bowl with Pasta Ribbons not Linguine, we then asked for a plate for it rather than the tiny bowl, once the plate arrived the Pasta was transferred onto the plate and was swimming in pasta water where it hadn't been drained properly, the dish itself was tasteless and poorly presented. The Chicken Supreme was also a huge disappointment, it was delivered to the table minus the Roast Chicken Sauce which we had to ask for, the fondant potato was rock hard, the leek terrine was uncooked, it was a huge disappointment. We then called over the Manager and aired our disappointment with the food which we didn't eat and told him we had no intention of paying for, also told him that the young girl who served us clearly wasn't cut out to work in hospitality, as she had absolutley zero interest in serving us. We then told him we had thought twice about booking as the reviews over the past couple of weeks had been awful and asked if he actually read them, he said they did but clearly they're not taking them seriously and haven't tried to up their game!!An apology from the "Manager" would have been nice but he didn't really respond to any of our questions, brought the bill for our drinks, which we paid and left.

I went for lunch here on 23rd September with two friends. We had booked a table for 12-30 and arrived on time. Shown to our table by a friendly waiter, ordered drinks, browsed through the menu and placed our order - three fish platters, described on the menu as smoked salmon, crayfish and prawns, with salad. The waiter explained there was no crayfish, but there would be whitebait instead. We all accepted this, sat chatting, sipping our drinks - and sat, and sat, and sat. An hour and a half later our food arrived - and it certainly wasn’t worth the wait. Some limp green leaves, a slice of smoked salmon, a small pile of tasteless shrimps (not a prawn in sight) and a few whitebait - which hadn’t been fried, were tasteless and inedible. At least the bread was nice. When the owner/manager came to the table and asked how we were enjoying the meal, I pointed out the disappointing features of the meal, the worst meal I have ever eaten in a restaurant. He kindly waived the bill. I will go back again one day and give the pub another chance - maybe they had a crisis in the kitchen, or the fish supplier let them down.

I have been visiting the Hit or Miss since I moved to Hazlemere in 1990. It has always been a delight to visit this pub. A warm welcome upon arrival, courteous and happy staff and creative cuisine of a very high standard. Since the previous owner Michael left things have gone downhill. Not at first but gradually over time. The staff now lack motivation, the food has hit rock bottom and to be honest it is not a place anymore which I will visit.Let me be more specific and to add credence to my views, let me say for many years I was a hotel and restaurant inspector of London hotels on behalf of a Swiss Travel company and an Italian one too. This restaurant come pub is now in need of some refurbishment and not just a lick of varnish over the tables. Perhaps a new carpet or a more hygienic floor covering would be good. The food has seriously gone downhill. Not sure where the last Polish chef has gone but they should try to get him back. Dishes were once served beautifully presented and very tasty. I don't think 2 thin fillets of sea bass served on a mound of rubbery French beans is very inviting. I know French fries are not the dish you should judge a restaurant by but once they were freshly fried but now they are pre bought chips with their skins on. They look tired before they reach the table. Last night I had the liver and bacon. It was totally crucified, overcooked and thus dry and difficult to eat. I mentioned this to the waiter who looked at me as though I shouldn't complain! A complimentary coffee would have been a nice gesture. On leaving nobody said goodnight like days gone by. I had just spent about £80 on a fairly miserable meal for two. The upshot is that I am very sad to say I will not be returning to the Hit or Miss until it becomes a more inviting place to eat.

We went to a wake at this attractive old pub, which is in a pleasant village setting, with a car park on the other side of the road. It is quite roomy with a side area for private functions. There were several good real ales on hand pumps. The buffet spread (chosen by the family) was substantial and varied (some people took uneaten food home). The service was very good. We did not see a menu so we cannot comment on what is available in the restaurant. We would probably return if in the area again.

This is a re-write of my original review following comments from the establishment, my updated and full review which also accounts for the comments from the pub are below the original. I will say for the befit of the readers after I posted my original review, the pub management retorted that they were sorry we waited for drinks on a busy day, which if you read my original review we had drinks, it was the food we never had, so alongside the service being well below any measure of being acceptable a half-hearted reply that really ignored the issues I was pointing out. Here is the original:I usually wait until the next day before writing a review of somewhere I visit…however, I felt this review was not going to change with time.

It’s 14:30 at the time of writing and we have been told that the kitchen is still not taking orders for food as “they are on a break”. This is a lunch booking we made for 13:30.

Thankfully we have as least had one round of drinks, even if when the Diet Coke ordered turned up as regular coke and we were made to feel it was somehow our fault as it was regular coke on the ticket.

I may update this after our food order is eventually taken and food arrives, however, I doubt it’s going to have any major effect on my decision not to recommend coming here.

The worst part is, we booked this meal as a birthday celebration and yet feel it may be someone else’s birthday before we get to eat!

My closing thoughts, never has an establishment name “Hit or Miss” been more appropriate. In case you are unsure, it’s definitely a miss on this occasion.I was asked by TripAdvisor to remove my quote of the management reply, I have a screen shot should this cause any questions, but in brief the response ignores the main issues, suggests my problems were only delayed drinks (not the fact of being unable to order food for at the time over writing over an hour after seating a prebooked table as the kitchen staff were "on a break" to quote the waiting staff and a half-hearted apology at best. It then went on to say it was unfair for me to condemn the pub based on that alone....I think if they had read my review and not just jumped to instant defence, they would have understood why my opinion was formed at this point. The worst part is, the reply has only given cause, as they wanted the review to be about their food, to rewrite the review and it's worse as you will see below. A simple, honest apology should have made amends, after all I can accept we are all human etc...So I have removed the quotes of their reply at request of TA and I am making this clear for fairness to both sides. My additional comments to this:Firstly, the response from the pub almost highlights part of the issue with the pub in my opinion. It is glaring from this response they have not understood the original review or ignored the facts presented. Waiting over an hour for the food order to even be taken and a rude member of staff were both illustrated above, but the response is to apologise for a wait for drinks and feel it was an unfair review as it did not review the food (again ignoring the fact our food order had not even been taken over an hour after sitting for a pre-booked table). But I fairness as they wanted a review of the food as clearly felt my review was not rounded enough here we go.The drinks ordered actually turned up in minutes of us being seated, so there was in fact no delay with the drinks. Ordering of food took considerable time, we asked the waiting staff several times about this and each time were told “the kitchen is too busy” or “the kitchen is taking a break” (yes this was actually said to us, regardless of the management claiming they don’t take a break…so regardless there is an issue with communication) and finally “we are not taking orders until the tickets go down”All around us most of the other seated tables were eating their food….much to our envy, especially as our orders were not even taken. At one point a member of our group joked about getting a “justeat” delivery. So after taking a table for 1:30 pm, our orders were taken and our starters were eventually delivered to the table just after 3:30 pm, some two hours after our table was booked for.Sadly the starters, while nice on the whole, were not complete after also confirming numbers during us placing our order, was a starter short.Another round of drinks was ordered and two glasses of lemonade returned as they tasted just of fizzy water. We asked the waitress to taste them to confirm and she promptly returned with two fresh glasses. Sadly she could not have tasted it first as they had the same issue and she then tasted and accepted the issue. We were advised it would take a few minutes to resolve, which is fine and then two fresh glasses of lemonade were delivered and enjoyed. We decided not to mention the very watery coke at this point and just accepted it.Main courses delivered at 3:48, approaching two and a half hours after the time for our booked table (I am really stressing this point to be clear to the management and future visitors as it was seemingly brushed away in the last response from the management).Multiple people ordered fish and chips and several of them felt the fish was dry and tasteless while having a strong odour. The chips were lovely in reflection. Being a non-fish eater I can’t comment on this personally, but became quite striking while eating my roast chicken dish. The roast potatoes had a rather strange, and arguably unpleasant fishy taste to them. I am unsure if they had been sat a contained that also had fish, or fried in the same oil as the fish had been, but there was a distinct notion of cross flavouring between dishes.Deserts ordered and consumed. To be fair only minor issues really. The person who ordered the dark chocolate brownie said it had a strange texture and left a “film in the mouth” which was odd. The treacle tarts were just very tough (the pastry) but otherwise ok and the sorbet was nice and refreshing. All in all, it is a nice looking pub, but I have to stand by my original review as on this occasion the service took a ridiculous amount of time and that alone justifies a 1-star review. The issue with a rude member of staff (who also dropped an entire tray of glasses outside as we left) clearly needs addressing. The quality of the food, especially after waiting over two hours for it, needs addressing and sadly, and I will put this down to skim reading, the management comment on my review missed the mark completely and frankly has lead to a more complete review to justify me condemning the pub with no attempt to resolve or offer anything more than a quick apology.Personally, nothing has been done to change my mind, which was only made worse after the time of the original review. No attempts to change our minds have been made by the pub either….so at this time I fully stand behind my original review and comments, which is a real shame.

Came here for a relaxing night out with friends, nice pub and got seated outside on a hot summer evening. Service was good although they had run out of one of the ales. We ordered some food. Unfortunately this pub is doing what some other establishments are doing as well, namely increased food prices whilst providing minimal portions. Food quality also had diminished since our last visit and we were forced to send dishes back as they were a poor reflection of the advertised dishes. The main course portions we very small indeed. I do understand that businesses have suffered severely during the Pandemic but, penalising customers by increasing prices and reducing quality and quantity of food seems counterintuitive. We went home hungry.

Booked online and I was pleased that there were no hiccups with this when we arrived. We would have preferred to have sat outside under one of the umbrellas (it was a glorious, hot day) but we were told none were available as they had been reserved. Upon leaving, it appeared to us that we could have been seated there as those tables clearly had not been used. (No shows??)The poor girl who served us was very new and it showed. She was very pleasant but lacking in training, I would suggest. We had with us our 4 year old granddaughter and it was a surprise to be told that there were no sausages, so the sausage & mash was off.....as indeed were several other menu options. Again, surprising given the place wasn't at all busy; (to give them the benefit of the doubt, we arrived at 1pm and maybe they'd been chocca at 12, although that seems highly unlikely give that there were very few people when we arrived).A tad pricey perhaps but the food on the "adult" menu itself was of high quality and we all enjoyed it. We've been here before and have always liked the pub and its location and will undoubtedly return.

My partner and I have been frequenting the Hit or Miss for 20 years +. I hardly ever leave reviews, especially after the bad times we have been through. Which makes typing this even harder. I am only leaving this as "The Hit or Miss" I have an awful lot of love for and want it to succeed on every level. We visited on a Monday evening and ordered a Pie and Hamburger. Simple and not easy to get wrong? Sad to say possibly the poorest meal we have had for a long time and definitely the worst I have ever eaten in the Hit or Miss. The images on trip advisor seem to be older images, not recent photos of the food which is served currently. The pie had pastry top and bottom, not sure what kind of pastry was used. It was not puff I hope as it was wafer thin and hard! French beans overcooked and the filling was edible but verging towards the dry side. The burger was dry and tastless and came with what seemd to be a plate of raw onions, mixed in with some yellow peppers and the fries were not the best either.I am well aware it is only a pie and a burger, but if you can't get the simple dishes correct. I am not sure if the usual chef was off, being a quiet Monday evening, I can only hope so,You need to up your game, the decor is also is looking very tired. Especially where we were sat. I thought you had re-decorated? The carpet is worn and the lights are crooked on the wall, curtains need replacing. Basically looking very tired overall where we were sitting. The devil is in the detail. Please improve. I can only hope you take this review onboard. In it's present form we will not be visiting again, which I find sad after 20+ years. The waitress was nice and helpful, I mentioned my dissapointment with the meal before I left. Some photos attached.

The website set expectations of a first-rate meal, and the greeting and seating continued that high-bar. However the food was mediocre whilst commanding a high-end gastro-pub price. The small cheese soufflé starter had completely collapsed by the time it reached the table - in hindsight, I should have asked for it to be replaced, but then that would have put me "out of sync" with the others on the table. The accompanying poached pears were tasteless. The pork belly was tasty with good apple sauce. However the potato cake was lacking the advertised "garlic and smoked bacon" flavours.Accompanying wines were good quality.Whilst not a bad meal, I felt distinctly underwhelmed for the price.

Called in for a snack lunch and a drink with ice. Ordered the most simple thing from the limited menu, a cheese and pickle sandwich and a sparkling water. With only 4 people at the pub the staff forgot the drink and it had to be ordered again. Had to ask for ice three times. Requested no lemon but drink came with lemon. I asked for sandwich to be toasted, but was told they would not do toast. I then requested brown bread but was told they had none. Settled in desperation for white bread. The inner part of the sandwich was OK but stale around the edges. (maybe freezer frosted?) I can see now why there were only 4 customers.

Visited today with family for lunch. Ordered roast lamb, very disappointed as the lamb not sliced and presented as 2 chunks of fat laden meat. Extremely chewy and nearly impossible to cut with normal knives. Not wishing to waste the meat in one of the most expensive roast dinners i have ever purchased it's now in the fridge as at least my dog will enjoy it. My son had the same with his lamb. Won't be visiting again.

We have visited Hit or Miss many times over the years but didn't realize they were running a village store and takeaway service in the current lockdown. We beached up by chance after a long walk and took advantage of their hot pot! It was great, amazing amount of meat. The staff were very accommodating.Well done to all involved. After reminding us of the great food they make and the lengths they will go to, they can count on us when they fully reopen!

This place is a treasure! Superb food is only enhanced by friendly, professional service. After a fabulous, muddy stomp around Penn Woods, we stopped in for lunch yesterday. I didn't think they could improve on their cooking, but this was the best ever - mackerel over grilled swede and beetroot, black caviar and veggies. A wonderful mix of flavours. My friend had a scotch egg to start - best I've ever tasted (was the mustard home-made? It was delicious!) and the lamb roast as a main - very flavourful meat. My dessert was the apple crumble with ice cream, hers was the maple syrup pud with maple walnut ice cream - again, tasted home made and delicious. I love this place!

Our reception was a bit manic, but things got better pretty quickly. We each had a roast, which were way better than they looked! The gravy is generous and the Yorkshire pudding is perfect. We were disappointed, however, when we asked for condiments. We were given a tub of prepacked salt, mayo and vinegar. No mustard or horseradish. We asked for horseradish and received a very small jar for both of us. It seems that the maitre d (I think that’s her job) is a “busy doing nothing” type of person; always stressed and flustered, but not really doing anything useful. The cheesecake and crumble are so good.

Just come back from Sunday lunch here. Staff were really good, restaurant was busy but not packed with enough waiting staff to keep everyone happy. Set Sunday lunch menu had something for everyone, and reasonably priced. The only expensive thing was a pint of coke/Pepsi was £3.70, but that’s pretty standard in most places! We both ordered roast beef which came out fast and was lovely. Two decent sized slices of medium rare beef, a big Yorkshire pudding and really well cooked seasonal vegetables and roast potatoes. Topped off with a little boat of home made real gravy, it really couldn’t be faulted. Good selection of puddings too, the apple crumble was lovely, and a deceptively large portion of it too! The food and service is always good here, but it’s good to see it carrying on even with the current restrictions.

After studying the menu, we agreed on sandwiches and a small bowl of chips.Well, what a surprise. The bread tasted like it had just been made, the crust was crisp and just warm. My ham and pickle sandwich was packed with high quality and very tasty meat. My wife had the prawn and crayfish. Again, packed with goodness and flavour. Chips also great. 4 for Sunday Lunch. Food was good (although could be more generous with veggies and potatoes on the 3 roasts). Some confusion over which staff member was serving our table when not overly busy. Main gripe was not being asked how our food was during and after meals when other tables in close proximity were, which made us feel like we were singled out for different treatment by one team member. We had to ask for additional drinks, condiments and cutlery and 2 lower value items were missed off the bill, which we were chased down for after we’d already paid. I am sure this isn’t a regular occurrence but a simple Sunday lunch was made hard work. We are local and will try again.

We visited 'The Hit' twice over the past weekend, on Friday evening and (due to a power cut at home) on Sunday lunchtime. The food on both occasions was excellent, with a good range of options and generous portion sizes. The service was as efficient as ever and we thoroughly enjoyed both visits.Importantly, in this day and age, we would not have gone back on the Sunday had we not felt entirely safe during our visit on the Friday. hand sanitiser was prominently displayed for all to use, tables are more than adequately spaced and were cleaned down with sanitiser after every use and the menus were practically being drowned in the stuff. As someone who runs two businesses, one of which has a hospitality arm, I am very aware of the requirements imposed on establishments such as this and believe that those requirements were being complied with in every way.

Upon entering there was no greeting or information as to the procedure for finding the table that we had booked. This meant that we had to wait at the bar which was quite busy. We were then shown to our table but were surprised that a group of four was shortly thereafter sat at the adjacent table even though other tables were free and not used while we were there. None of the staff wore any kind of face covering. The service was extremely slow and we had to chase staff to order food and for the bill. The bill never arrived so eventually we had to return to the bar (something that is supposed to be avoided in the current covid situation!) in order to pay for the meal. The food was good (we only had a main course because the service was so slow). There were several examples of staff being seemingly unaware of safety procedures. Very disappointing!

I don't normally write reviews on here, but I felt compelled to after visiting this Tuesday evening. The website guided me to making sure there was enough space to accommodate us by booking in advance, which is now essential and outlined in the Covid restrictions we should expect. We arrived and enjoyed very friendly service from Donna and Phil (who has made the outside seating area look absolutely wonderful!). We ordered starters of onion rings and tempura prawns - both of which were generous portions and cooked perfectly (I had seen a review on here that the quality of the famous tempura prawns had diminished - I'm not sure what happened that evening because if anything these were the best yet!)For our mains we had a steak and a chicken roulade - both were cooked perfectly for us and the accompanying veg to our starters and mains were delicious - I have heard the supplier may have changed? Desserts and yet more drinks followed; it was such a great post Covid dining experience.Covid wise: there has clearly been a lot of thought into how to manage the situation but not impede the feel of stopping in to the pub. There are one way systems and hand sanitizer stations set up at appropriate points. They have instituted full table service in the interim, and we never had to wait for a refill etc.. I would also like to highlight how much the respectfulness and consideration that the staff showed us was appreciated (we got the one-way system wrong more than once!). My anxieties and concerns were taken into consideration - especially with how clear they were about how they would treat your contact data for the track and trace information - the patience of the staff and willingness to explain and allay concerns was so appreciated. Basically - Awesome menu, brilliant service! Call/book online first to avoid being turned away though.

Delighted to review the new take-away service as we're currently self-isolating and the pub are offering it because of the corona virus - including delivery within a 2.5 mile radius. We had the slow-cooked lamb, the veggie lasagne, side veg and garlic bread - all excellent. For any older vegetarians who like me tend to get a heart sink moment at the mention of veg lasagne (because bad versions of it were all we got offered in the 1980's) I can report that the Hit or Miss 'Wild mushroom, spinach & mozzarella lasagne' was the best I've ever had since becoming a vegetarian in 1982! They're currently offering soup, sandwiches, 3 hot mains and sides. See the Take-away section on their website and enjoy!

OK it was Sunday roast and that’s never great, but the food was totally underwhelming. Duck stir fry - too oily not enough duck and too salty. Roast turkey - peas and cubed turnip, 2 roast pots, gravy and turkey roll. Not terrible but definitely boring. And then there was the beer. The Firsty Ferret tasted very odd and the Badger bitter wasn’t much better (cloudy). Then to cap it all I got charged for a pint and half of cider instead of just a half and two pints of bitter even though I’d taken one back. Careless at least! I noticed the pub was full of elderly locals. Clearly the younger set decide to drive further away to somewhere better.

Regrettably this establishment has significantly slipped in its standards since Redcat took over the management from its previously family-owned business. I have stayed regularly - previously very well run and efficient. Now there is no managerial oversight to ensure efficiency and hospitality. Examples: last two occasions that I stayed - staff could not get coffee machine working for breakfast - water or juice only - if machine is not working or waiting for parts, why not have kettle/instant coffee? (suitable apologies from staff; pre-ordered cooked breakfasts not ready at the requested time - evening team did not hand over to morning team (again apologies from staff); archaic payment system for paying for B&B stay (manual input of long card number into laptop - why not use the card machine that's used for paying for drinks/meals?).
