Histon Village Fryer in South Cambridgeshire

I live their fish and chips but been extremely sick afterwards and sick for hours after eating, no idea why could be the fat they use

Very good food and pretty cheap too. Have ended up going regularly that the people in there know my order: 2 duck Chow Meins and a medium chips. Never disappoints!

Always friendly prompt service, Chinese dishes are just perfect and our taste, love the udon noodles !

All I can say is that they serve fish and chips.

I don't know if related as I love their fish and chips but that is twice I have had and then been sick all afternoon and in pain. Husband has chinese and fine, maybe just a fluck but as much as I love probably won't go again maybe something they use doesn't agree with me.

Front guy, seemed new, he was very rude with me. (Asian guy, not the usual English guy) It wasn’t the language barrier that was the issue, it was his behaviour. I got there at 16:58, just before they opened. Chips were old, they were leathery and burned. Clearly made when they opened for lunch, hours earlier. I just ended up throwing them in the bin. It’s a real shame, I had been going to the Histon Chippy’s for 13 years. But this is the last straw. The food went down in quality after the new owners came, and I’d only kept going there because it was close to home, but now I’ll be going elsewhere. I don’t recommend!

We had their F&C last night and is was delicious. The fish batteries was still crispy when I got home. The service was very quick too. We will order it again.

What to say went there ordered food got my phone to pay it was six quid only for the guy be-hide the till said min £10 it’s fish and chip shop. I been using this shop for years, I wan5 be going back

I used to live in Histon and order both Chinese and chips regularly. It's been a few years and I went and I bought some portions of chips and peas recently. They were excellent and as good as I remember. Definitely worth a visit.

Very popular and can be abit of a wait at peak times. I'd therefore recommend phoning your order and then picking up at the allocated time.

Have used this chip shop for many years but last night I had the worst meal I have ever had squid was like rubber, aromatic duck was burnt and dry, everything else very fatty, Very disappointing!

The best fish and chips in Histon

Greasy and flavourless for us but people here seem to love it. We tried it ones and that was enough.

We haven't had Chinese take-out in ages what with lock-down and having to isolate. Big family get together last night and everyone agreed that the food was fabulous. Better than it has ever been and HVF was always our go-to for Chinese before Covid. Highly recommended.

Good service, chips are wonderful as wellastherest of thefood, and the Chinese is also good.

This is the best fish and chip shop in Cambridge. I don’t understand some of the negative reviews. I have never had a bad experience ordering from here with fish and chips or Chinese take away. The food is always good.

Got the order wrong and had to go back but was nice

Used to be a great when managed by the parents. However, since it’s been passed on the standards and quality have really slipped. And portions reduced. Started to use The Viking in Camb, which is fantastic and great value.

Chips are great from here but on the Chinese side pork was mainly fat and chicken was wet

Have been a good Fish/Chips and Chinese Takeaway that the family has used for years. 2 weeks ago we had a poor meal which did not taste as it should. We phoned up to advise. We were told that they were sorry and would sort out our next bill as a gesture of goodwill. However, when we went back to the takeaway the staff refused to honor the verbal agreement that the manager had previously made. They were abrupt and refused to discuss.

Always enjoy fish and chips from here but NOT tonight - it certainly wasn’t up to standard - will give it a miss for a while .

Best fish and chips In the area. Haddock and Cod both tasty. Chips cooked to perfection. Good Chinese food also, all cooked fresh on the premises to family recipe.

Found myself in the neighbourhood & fancied a fish supper - wow ! There was a queue of over 20 but worth the weight - 3 x Cod n chips as well as 2 x Haddock n chips - all excellent

No gluten free options at all. When I enquired the man was very rude and unhelpful. Would not recommend at all.

I’ve lived in Histon for years, and in that time I’ve never found a better tasting fish, or nicer chips anywhere else. Always fresh, hot, tasty and exactly what you’d expect. Crispy batter and soft chips. Definitely worth a take-away, if only they did delivery..

Ordered vegetarian chow mein but when I got it home it was fish and prawns , took a lot of conversation on the phone to try and convince them this was not my order and eventually just gave up as they were very unhelpful.

It's a couple of miles for us but if we fancy Chinese take away it's the only choice. Excellent chips. Loses a point for cash only policy.

The best chips for miles and the batter on the fish is delicious, the extra large Chinese pancake rolls are also excellent.

We use the Village Fryer frequently for both fish and chips and Chinese. Last weekend we had a Chinese takeaway which was excellent both in flavour and value.

He estado aquí un par de veces, aunque vivimos a 12 millas de distancia. Pescado encantador, rebozar el mejor y patatas fritas calientes y muy barato! ! ! !

Hemos estado yendo aquí durante años, grandes tipos detrás del mostrador, buena comida. Tengo que alejarme de los peces por alguna razón, tal vez es el petróleo el que no está de acuerdo, pero juega en mi tum. No es su culpa ya que la comida siempre es excelente.

Este lugar siempre está ocupado y a veces se queda corto de pescado. Debido a la alta rotación de clientes, la comida nunca se queda empapada. Pescado siempre muy bien hecho en una buena pasta y porciones de gran tamaño. Como otros han comentado, el tamaño de los pensionistas es un gran negocio. Las patatas fritas son un buen estilo chippy, no de tus lujosas papas fritas aquí.

I live in the next village to Histon and although we have a fish and chip shop I always go to Histon. Good service . Good food.

This takeaway has been there for over 10 years with the same people running it who are lovely. Price is reasonable and tasted lovely. Great for a takeaway in a small village. Chips could be better though! Chow mein I’d recommend.

I honestly have had worse Chinese in Cambridge. Their pancake rolls are really nice and very few places do them, always crispy and very good fillings.

La última semana de Freidora Histon encontrar un aviso en la ventana diciendo que la tienda estaba cerrado por unas vacaciones de 2 semanas. Muy decepcionados, ya que en visitas anteriores nos parecieron sirve excelente y una gran parada de patatas fritas en el camino a la estación de vista.

Muy decepcionado con mi eglefino que, aunque cubierto el habitual empanada precioso, era tan rancio que no podía comer. Sospecho que el pescado había sido duros antes de freírlas (para cubrir staleness) ya que estaba gris, dura y sin sabor. Mantener a bacalao que tiene mayor volumen!

There is a sign on the wall stating "The best chips you've ever tasted", I am sorry but false advertising or what.What I would call a child's portion of chips and a little curry sauce for adult price. Chips were ok but nothing special, a bit crusty as they were over cooked.I will not be going again instead I will make the 2 mile journey to the other chippy I have given a glowing report for. One of the best fish and chip restaurants around. The chips are always well cooked, not the half cooked jobs you often find. Fish etc is good, if a little pricey.The chinese is very tasty and good value. The chow mein is excellent.The staff are always friendly and courteous. Parking can be tricky at busy times.

Chinese take away very good fish and chips nice always cooked in clean oil. We always order by phone and collection time is always spot on.Recomended

We bought 2 take aways here, not being up to yet another over priced average meal in Cambridge. We hadn't have had a takeaway for over a decade i think! They leave the skin on the fish which daughter hated, but the chow mein is super, lots of mange tout, fresh mushrooms, a few baby sweetcorn.I hated the fact we were in a hotel eating a take away but it was very nice!Wasn't expenisive either, I think around £5 for a meal. Huge portions, second night we had to cut down what we'd ordered as just so much food. Chicken and rice was very , very plentiful.

Chinese very good and fish & chips very good too. It is quite popular so to place your order by phone is best or you may have to wait a while but the wait is worth it.

Yes the portion of fish can be a bit small but it's all great quality and very tasty, proper nice chips too.Friendly service and been there in Histon for more than 20 years. I hope it stays forever.
