Highwayman in The Vale of Glamorgan

I used to rave about this place but sadly it’s gone downhill over the last year or so. Never seems to be anyone in control, just young staff who clearly haven’t been trained in customer service and simply don’t seem to care. Ordered a m/w fillet, only for it to arrive very rare. Had to go looking for a staff member who took it back (tho he left the pepper sauce behind to go cold). On returning about 10 minutes later he informed me it was ‘only the end bit’ and the rest was fine. It wasn’t! At no time did anyone come to the table to check. Some time later a waitress cleared our plates and asked if everything was ok. I pointed out my plate, still full of rare steak, and explained I wasn’t at all happy with my meal. In fairness, she did deduct it from the bill, but the whole experience was disappointing - poor food, terrible service, but most of all the fact no-one cared. The poor service has been something we’ve noticed on our last few visits - no-one checking on tables, no offering further drinks, and just a general lack of interest from staff. Always used to be Kyle in charge - he was always on the ball, incredibly efficient, as were the more ‘mature’ waitresses. Get them back!!

Another fantastic meal before heading to the airport for a holiday. Everything I have eaten here has been fantastic. Service is always great & large portions served.

Greasy greasy greasy! Foods everything that's wrong with the UK. Massive potion swimming in grease. Put a bit of pressure on the chips (made with new potatoes) or onion rings and oil drips out. Absolutely horrendous.

We opted for the over 60’s menu and my wife had the lasagne and I had the steak and ale pie and wow were we surprised at the generous proportions. Cooked to perfection, both meals were delicious, the Double Dragon ale was sublime and the waitress service was excellent This inn easily gets 5 stars. Just be careful driving because the last mile or so is single track but well worth it .

Food was lovely, couldn't fault it at all. Unfortunately let down by poor service. Everything just seemed like a massive inconvenience to the staff, we asked for the dessert menu and waited 30 mins for anyone to bring us the menu, then after waiting another 20 mins we had to ask someone to come and take our dessert order. Everyone just looked miserable, really let down the whole experience. Not sure I would return on that basis, which is a shame because the food was very nice.

Using their long-term car park for Cardiff Airport. Friendly and helpful. Hopefully the car will be OK when we get back!

Call in often for lunch, senior citizens menu is delicious and very reasonably priced, the Barnsley chop is amazing and the lasagna delicious.

Amazing food and lovely attentive staff. I had the Condemned Mans Meal 40oz Mixed Grill. It was very nice. Steak was slightly overcooked to medium than medium rare but that was forgivable and it was still very enjoyable. It's the first time I've ever not been able to finish a mixed grill. The portions here are absolutely massive! Value for money is great. Will definitely return again where I will defeat that mixed grill!!

Huge portions, great atmosphere, good service.

Second time here, first time left a fab review, but tonight, what a disappointment. Staff referred to us as mate, although we reserved a table we were put by the bar, not good, and the food was awful. Had the fish and chips, very old fat used for both. Tainted everything. Couldn't leave a tip, it was that bad.

I planned my trip to dartmoor to visit this pub. I went years ago and thought it was great. I waited with my dog and partner in the car for it to reopen at 6. Went in and was welcomed, they gave the dog some water. They took drinks orders. Soon after the lady owner started shouting at me saying to keep my dog in one area. He was on a lead so i said where would to like him to go? She continued shouting and saying she had people over for dinner and the dog is making the floor dirty. He is a medium sized cockerpoo and the floor is dark stone so we were confused as to why the dog wasn't welcome. She said we can go if we want which made us feel like we ought to. She continued shouting about the trouble we caused for making the floor dirty and wasting our drinks. We didn't say anything back to her yelling and she gave us no choice but to leave. I checked ahead and they say dogs are welcome. It was all a but bizarre and very disappointing.

Absolutely stunning as usual. We went there the Saturday evening before Mother's day, as a last-minute booking. They accommodated all 7 of us with no issue. My only complaint is they need to have a chicken meal on the children's menu without batter. Adults portions are massive, high quality as well. Can't wait for the next time. Been here a couple of times, best cooked steak in the vale. :) Our steak was beautiful and Well cooked, good sized portions. Staff lovely had a great meal would recommend.

Staff were nice, happy young staff. Could have been more attentive to table but did get busy. Food. Ribs a bit tastless, Both my Sons and my Steak were very tough. I left most of mine. Told Waiter. His reaction was Oh. Having a similar business for 23 years. More interest should have been shown. My Mother is 95 years of age, Pensioner's Menu ends at 3pm. Meal was far too big for her. Busy, nice atmosphere. But we would not return.

Saturday 4 NOV Had a juicy steak kebab ( medium ) it’s was delicious , Cooked to perfect,no fat at all. We were a table of six everyone commented on the quality of the food and service which we could not fault. generous portions Excellent service , Recommend booking to avoid disappointment Will return soon…. What a great surprise. We were looking for a late lunch and followed Google's recommendation to come here and this is now one of our favourite places to eat in South Wales. The portions are massive but that doesn't take from the flavour, it is delicious and very high quality meat. Friendly staff too.

Came with my friends for a good roast, after 1,5 hours when we were waiting for our dessert a young lad, a member of staff with curly dark hair came over asking us to “kind of hurry up”, because apparently they were overbooked and we were in the way and told us we had a 2 hour slot which we weren’t told at any point whatsoever (not on the phone during the booking, nor when we arrived), he needs to be fired for being rude and totally disrespectful towards customers. Go find another job, this one is not for you clearly. After that another waiter came over asking if we wanted to order something else (???? So we thought it was a 2 hours slot, or is it bad communication?) Not going to return, good luck with your horrible business.

Where do I even begin. We booked a table for four a few weeks in advance due to wanting to visit on a Sunday and knowing everyone on a Sunday wants a good roast! During the call was not advised at any point that it was a slot booking. Took a while to be served around 25 minutes, food arrived and was the only good part - the roast was lovely. Unfortunately the same can’t be said for the rudeness of particular member of staff who felt it necessary just as we’d ordered deserts to inform us our table slot booking was over and (we knew nothing about this) he asked us to hurry up as people needed the table. We surrounded by some rude and ignorant people who assumed that we must of just been taking our time and were angry we had not moved from our table. This was not done out of ignorance but purely the fact we didn’t know it was a timed booking and we’d been served late. The staff should have dealt with this however they made the situation more uncomfortable by not addressing the fact they hadn’t been clear with us at the time of booking. We couldn’t finish our deserts as it was a ridiculously uncomfortable atmosphere and who wants to be glared at when eating? Let’s be honest! The manager did speak to us when asked for and was polite dealing with the situation and apologising, and that shouldn’t go unnoticed and did take the deserts off our bill and last round of drinks. The member of staff who was rude did give a half arse apology but it was pathetic and didn’t need to happen like that. As we were brought our bill again we were asked if we wanted another drink even though we’d been asked to leave! The long and short is, extremely busy, poor communication, too many heads, clearly set up for locals and will not be returning, not even a good roast potato can take away the rudeness of a particular member of staff!

I'm 73 it was the best Sunday lunch I have ever had

We visited for our son’s 18th birthday. The menu is really varied, from salads to steaks to pasta. The staff are super friendly and the portions are very generous. Food is cooked fresh for each order so there can be a wait at busy times. The restaurant was very busy on a Thursday night - I recommend booking in advance. We took a birthday cake with us which we had for dessert with some ice cream, the staff couldn’t have been more helpful with this and even started the Happy Birthday singing! Highly recommended.

Fantastic value for money. The quality of the food and portion size are well worth the money. We had 2 people mention there pasta was too salty and they replaced both meals. If you like good pub grub and friendly service, get here.

The restaurant is a little bit too loud as we couldn't hear each other talking but the food was phenomenal every portion was huge, and the batter on the onion rings was divine

We used the secure airport parking on site for a trip to Cyprus. Excellent Sunday lunch before a shuttle bus to the airport. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Would definitely recommend.

Food was out of this world you get so much bang for your buck. The waiters and waitresses were fantastic so friendly and happy to talk with us. Highly recommend the place and unlike the name it was not robbery.

The steak was fab..and the onion rings were fab and huge

Omg, first time for me and my wife, had the fillet steak kebab, my wife had the chicken kebab. Chilli bed for starters, food was amazing. We where with other friends, all meals were superb.

The restaurant was warm and friendly. The menue choice is great for traditional British food . We were spolit for choice with good variation of starters and main courses. The portions were huge and ifvyou have a big appetite you will not be disappointed. Personally it was to much for me and I should have skipped the starters ! Service was quick and the food presentation was good. The drinks were a little slow but nothing to be annoyed about.

Just stopped there after a flight home they were full but did there best to get a table for us and the food and dessert was lovely.

Lovely place, good food, but felt disappointed today when I was given the bill. My wife and I wanted something from over 60s menu, but were handed a bill from normal menu. When I questioned this they didn't budge. Very disappointed as I am quite a regular customer.

Sunday lunch was nice. The price was reasonable, we had childs lunch and that was just right for us and we had pudding. Play area for children, plus in the country if you fancied a walk x all in all we would definitely go again

Call in yesterday after a flight into Cardiff .Well both myself agreed we had the best Steaks in a very long time my wife had Rump I had Sirloin beautiful cooked a large portion with onion rings.peas side salad the dining area was really busy but the staff coped well and had a lovely attitude .A great dining experience

Never seen meals so big 🤣 starters were lovely! Crispy beef and battered Brie! Burger was huge and enough chips to feed all the seagulls in Barry island! The kebab skewer was big too! Felt bad leaving so much food, I’ll bring the dog next time so there’s no waste! 😂

Absolutely stunning food. Staff very friendly and helpful. We ate here to use the shuttle service they provide to Cardiff Airport. Got very busy at lunch time as it most be very popular with the locals. They have a play area for children outside.

It's been such a long time since the last time I was here, and it definitely didn't disappoint. Such excellent value for money If you're down by Cardiff Airport, then definitely give it a go

We have been to The Highwayman a couple of times for a meal, and it never disappoints! Always a warm welcome from staff, who are always very helpful with dietary requirements and/or changing food items to suit. The service is exceptional, even during the busiest times like our most recent visit. The place was packed out, wall to wall with fellow diners... yet the wait for food was no longer than 15 or 20 minutes. Now, the food... Be weary that the portion sizes are very generous. You get more than your money's worth here! For instance, my lasagna was huge and the garlic bread was a whole ciabatta sliced into 4. My wife had the kids lasagna and chips... and it was the size of an adults meal like you would get in most other pub restaurants!! And the best part is that the prices are about the same as places that give you smaller portions. I 100% recommend The Highwayman for a meal out with family or friends, it's a fantastic place!

The pub is obviously amazing, loved every minute inside. Food was a little basic but OK. Service was friendly and helpful. Wouldn't go back for food but was very glad I visited

As a retired chef I had Sunday lunch beef dinner amazing delicious enjoyable apple pie and castard yummy. The alacart menu is good and well prepared and nice presentation. Going back Wednesday.

We had Sunday lunch here today and must say it was the best one we have had we had at least 5 pieces of beef each.Staff are lovely we will definitely be returning and recommending to family and friends thank you

Booked a last minute table for 2 which we were grateful for . Food arrived reasonably quickly and was well presented. Generous portions . I had the surf and turf . My partner had the ultimate combo. Luckily I ate my steak first otherwise the whole meal would have been wasted. I gave one of my prawns to my partner to try. I ate one. The 3rd one I pulled the head off to de shell the prawn and blood splattered everywhere. Wasn't just all over the plate. But it had also splattered up the side of my face. I immediately went to the toilet to wash it off and my hands as I was wrenching with the smell whilst my partner called the waitress over. I returned to the table and asked her if she could take the plate as I couldn't eat it now . To be fair to her she took it away and apologised. After about 10 mins of sitting there we called someone else over and asked for the bill. I went to the bar to pay and the same waitress said to me. Sorry about that , I did speak to the chef but she said it's unfortunate. That all prawns are cooked with their heads on. I get that but as a customer paying £67 for 2 meals and one drink you would think as an apology you would have offered us a complimentary drink.? I was drinking coke so wouldn't have been a big expense . So I'm a bit reluctant of returning and suggest people be very wary of the prawns. So I've given 4 star for the service by the waitress. The generous portions but overall the experience and going home for a sandwich a 2 star.

We went for Lunch today to celebrate my Grandsons Baptism , three of us had sunday lunch , we were served a very small oval eared dish of vegtables just enough for two certainly not enough for three . We asked the young waiter if we could have some more veg but our request was completely ignored . What we had was beautiful but for £15.95 veg was very sparse.

Afternoon cream tea with friends. Not as nice as expected and not readily available items. We could only have our 2nd choice at exactly 2 o'clock. We had also booked.

Book in advance to guarantee a table. My family of 7 (three different generations) went for my mums 65th Birthday meal. We each had a different meal from the menu, and everyone said how incredible the food was. I had the steak and ale pie with mash (instead of chips). I can honestly say it was the best pie I’d ever eaten. The meat was so tender, and the chef made a separate puff pastry that sat on top. It was perfect. My sister had the lasagne. She never finishes a big meal, but ate every last bit. My daughter had the pub curry, and she devoured it. Mum had the chicken antelope, which she said was one of the nicest pieces of chicken she’d ever ate. Staff were so lovely, and couldn’t do enough for us. Service and food wasn’t slow, but also not rushed. Just right. Highly recommend, and can’t wait to go back. Loads of parking available.

Visited with my family just after opening and almost all tables were reserved (so a good sign). The food was incredible and the portions are very good, so much so that we all had a doggy bag to take home. Reasonably priced for the portion sizes. It was my first visit after hearing many recommendations and i will certainly be going back. 100% recommended - would suggest booking though because I think we were lucky that they could seat us.

Never had a bad meal. Always a go to for any occasion. Best food around by far. Portions are MASSIVE so make sure you're hungry when visiting!

recently visited The Highwayman Inn with my family and we had a great experience. The food was delicious, the service was friendly, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. I started with the lasagne, which was made with fresh pasta and a rich, flavorful sauce. It was served with perfectly cooked chips and garlic bread. My son had the monster burger, which was huge and juicy. He said it was the best burger he's ever had. My wife and daughter both had kids meals, which they both enjoyed. The service was excellent. Our server was attentive and friendly. He was happy to make recommendations and answer any questions we had. The atmosphere at The Highwayman Inn is warm and inviting. The pub is decorated in a traditional style, with exposed beams and a fireplace. There is also a large outdoor patio that is perfect for dining al fresco. Overall, we had a great experience at The Highwayman Inn. The food was delicious, the service was friendly, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a great dining experience in Rhoose.

Booked for 20 people for birthday celebration, I did pre order meals as we were such a large group. All the food came out together, all hot and totally amazing. Everyone enjoyed not one complaint. Amazing quality, yes it can be deemed more expensive than other places. But the highwayman is all fresh home cooked food and you pay for what you get. 10/10 ❤️ photos of scewers
