Nice place, location and amazing southafrican taste. I don't know whether their strongest point is the friendliness of the staff or the delicious food. We had a really nice talk in dutch (afrikaans)/english with the owner :)

Outstanding food, as usual, coupled with superb fine wine. We had the Stellenbosch scotch egg and beef tartar to start, followed by steaks, chips, creamed spinach and vegetables. Finished off with a plate of cheese and a hefty bill, but it was worth it!

I always enjoy the wine and food but the experience was exceptional last night. Thanks to the High Timber team for a memorable evening.

This is a small but outstanding steak restaurant. The chateaubriand was the best steak I've had. Its in the same price range as Gaucho and Goodmans but the quality is certainly right up there and possibly better. Definitely worth a visit.

New starter the Stellenbosch Scotch Egg is brill! You've had runny scotch eggs before but this is a new twist! Steak as good as ever and went nicely with a 2012 Jordan Prospector Syrah for international Syrah Day.

A lovely restaurant tucked away alongside the Thames in close proximity to St Paul’s. Great South African cuisine backed up by an amazing wine selection.

Difficult to find using Google maps , this is an unimposing place to approach. It is a bit of a "canteen" with little in the way of stylish decor inside. The food from the limited menu, however, is spectacular. South African comfort food prepared wonderfully , and served enthusiastically. I really enjoyed my visit.

Our evening at High Timber was excellent. The food was absolutely first class and the steak we had was possibly the best I have ever eaten. The wines were also excellent and I can't fault the service either. High Timber is a little pricey but the price of the food and wine is the only thing stopping me from giving a five star review. I highly recommended High Timber.

Neleen and Lukas are amazing hosts! Thank you for making us feel so welcome from the moment we arrived. The ambiance is calming, lots of space between tables offering a degree of refinement rather than a feeling of profit maximisation at the expense of comfort. The menu is inspired and as a South African household, we attest to its authenticity. Try the malva pudding!

Excellent place! The menu is a little short, but still very good. We tried the croquettes, salad, biltong, burrata, South African wine, and everything was excellent. The atmosphere is relaxed and suitable for conversation.

Will our assigned server was first class. Very prompt very knowledgeable & looked after us really well throughout our visit. The food was very well presented & extremely tasty. Thoroughly recommend a visit. Only negative is the location provided it a little deceptive as the address drops you on the Lower Thames Street side & the restaurant is river side. No obvious signs to direct you.

High Timber is somewhat hidden out of the way but it’s worthwhile taking the time to find this great restaurant. There are superb views across the Thames to the Globe, Tate Modern and upriver to the Oxo building - especially at night. They have a good selection of wines with waiters who know their offerings and who can give helpful recommendations There’s a good range of food but consider opting for steak as they serve some of the best steaks in London and chefs who know what they’re doing. Highly recommended. But don’t mention rugby right now!

Exemplary from start to finish. Highly professional yet friendly service. The rooibos tea smoked salmon and turbot ceviche were stimulating starters (we shared - the ceviche should definitely be eaten last!) and the jalapenos in the ceviche were an inspired touch. Loved it. Know this restaurant is renowned for it's steak but this was a Friday lunchtime and we wanted something a little lighter, so we both went for the wild bass with hollandaise/tartar/samphire , shared chips and harissa broccoli and it was just right. View of course is terrific and it was a beautifully sunny day making it even better. They clearly know their wine and the price list reflects the quality - in an ideal world I think they could do with a couple more under £50 and also a description of each would be good, but it's not a criticism, just a suggestion. Looking forward to an excuse to return soon!

The hospitality is second to none. If you want to feel like you are being looked after realise your responsibility to share your kindness and it will be reciprocated. A lovely place with lovely food and wine.

Great food and a SA twist which is most enjoyable. Lovely views of the Wobbly Bridge, Globe Theatre, Bankside Tate Modern and the river generally.

Everything was 5 star. The ambiance, service and food were outstanding. The manager let my wife try a few wines before she decided what to order. The place is expensive (£70 each) but worth it. I included a pic of our Pancetta desert.

Food was ok, we probably did not test the menu enough to review properly but the service was great.

A great time, great service and an amazing wine list

Great food and drinks in a very unusual location, right next to the River Thames. Good value on specials, and Dover sole was outstanding but a pricey on the wines.

Went in for lunch by myself and had wonderful experience. Attentive service and the wild stone bass was perfectly cooked and very tasty.

I go here every time I am in London. Very reliable. Simple menu that is well prepared and subtly changing.

Two couples each had a 200 g ribeye. Meat was prepared perfectly at medium rare. Sides including new potatoes, cream, spinach, and broccoli were excellent as well. Service was impeccable. Very pleasant experience. Would go back again without hesitation.

As a South African living in London, I was surprised that I'd never heard of this place, despite them being here for 15 years. The food and wine were okay, without being anything amazing. Staff and service were also fine without be too polite. Atmosphere is good, but that's due to their fortunate location down by the Thames.

Over many years High Timber has consistently delivered excellent food with outstanding wine with very good service in a very congenial riverside location.

Wonderful setting on the Thames, great wine and very tasty food- I particularly enjoyed the mackerel. The staff were incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. Highly recommend.

Simply superior service and hospitality! Recently visited HT while on work in London with some friends and clients. From the moment we arrived, we were treated like family and the food only made things better. The owner personally showed us to the wine cellar and assisted with some great recommendations. As for the steaks, I would put them on par with any world class steak house! The dessert was also excellent. We will return!

I love this place! My family and I ate there 3-4 times while on holiday in London. We tried the ribeye, burger, corn ribs, malva pudding - everything was delicious. I was touched by the warm hospitality too. The owner genuinely cares about her customers and each time we visited High Timber, she made a sincere effort to make sure our meal was special. Once in particular she kindly accommodated us at great inconvenience to her team. We will never forget our experiences at High Timber! When in London we will definitely make a point to return. I recommend you try this place for delicious South African cuisine, excellent wine, and friendly hospitality.

The best steak restaurant in London and maybe UK.

I recently dined at this restaurant, and while the food was excellent, several aspects of the experience left me disappointed. Firstly, I was disappointed by the hostess’s attitude. Despite available outdoor tables, we were not given the option to sit outside, and she seemed to penalize us for booking on the same day. This was quite off-putting. The pricing for the ribeye steaks also left me perplexed. Offering two 250g steaks for £68 and a single 500g steak for only £1 more didn’t make much sense from a value perspective. On the positive side, the service was efficient, but the ambiance left much to be desired. There was no music, and the decor felt plain and sad. Another drawback was the limited dessert menu, with only three options. Moreover, the absence of decaf coffee was surprising, as they could only offer instant decaf. Despite the great quality and presentation of the food, these negatives overshadowed the experience. I’m left with the impression that I probably won’t return to this restaurant in the future.

Probably the last really warm Friday evening of the year, still touching 80F as the sun went down over the city. Burrata as good as I've had anywhere and just the thing. Thanks Neleen for the recommendation of the Kleine Zalze Family Reserve 2017 cab, which stood up to the heat and went perfectly with the burger. Nine Yards 2020 chard from Jordan tasting even better too as time goes by. Bravo and see you when Negroni Time transitions into Old Fashioned time!

Excellent rib eye, try also as siders the creamed spinach and the roasted potatoes. A great choice of wines also. Nice place to enjoy your dinner, superb views along Thames.

We had a very enjoyable lunch on 15/8/23. The food was excellent and the service efficient but not intrusive. On reflection my only dissatisfaction was paying £9:00 for 2 bottles of water in a refillable container . We asked for still water and I cannot accurately state from where it came. Other than this everything was excellent including the view.

Exceptional food. Unusual yet superb wine. Great ambiance sat in the sun by the Thames. Excellent service and great advice on what to order. Definite will be returning. Thank you to all those who made it such a memorable evening.

Clearly a very popular restaurant! It would be impossible to fault the food and service which were both excellent. If there was fault, it was the overall noise level at times from other tables left us struggling to hear each other but as said food and service, top notch!

bad attitude of the hostess. we won't come back here again

First time here, a bit difficult to find based off phone map app, but we made it. Food was excellent, if we are ever in Blackfriars area in London again, we will definitely go again.

In all my years visiting High Timber I've never tried their Jo'Burger so time to remedy that - and, it was exemplary. Some kind of secret house seasoning. I will be back soon enough for my creature-of-habit ribeye steak, but, the Jo'Burger has become a new favourite too. Seeing I was a confused old man, Neleen firmly but tactfully over-rode my also habitual Cobblers Hill with a Le Riche 2017 Reserve Cab - a knockout. Sadly I think she said it was the last bottle. A perfect sunny evening on the river, amply warm but not too hot, was added to many such others.

A hidden gem of a restaurant, the haddock dish was superb as was the steak. Lovely views of the Thames with a gentle breeze, very polite and prompt service. Would definitely visit again.

Fantastic evening with Neleen and her team in the restaurant

We were at High Timber to celebrate a birthday. It was fortunate that we dine as a function was going on downstairs. We had the main floor to ourselves. The food was very good and different from the usual. The Pork Cheek Balls were delicious especially the applesauce. Overall excellent cuisine. The wine recommendation for guest was superb. Really enjoyable. We will definitely be back to try other dishes.
