High Flyer in East Cambridgeshire

I stayed for a few nights. It’s in a great location- so close to the Cathedral! The service from manager Jan was excellent- he is very helpful professional and also friendly! he answered all my questions and made my stay great. The young waiter and waitress was great too. The food choice was really good. Try the smashed avocado with lime chilli and poached eggs for breakfast! A nice hotel/bistro with food and bar always available. The rooms … pleasant but no black out blinds, just short curtains which let the light in, but with such a comfortable bed all is forgiven. I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone

We rarely eat out over Bank Holidays or Mothers day etc. But my husband thought the menu looked nice for Easter Sunday. I had pre ordered a dish because I use a walking stick and struggle with a carvery. My small bottle of prosecco was plonked on the table without the server bothering to ask if I'd like it opened or poured. Server started to take our plates away while I was still eating. My main dish - as stated on the menu- was meant to come served with saute potatoes and buttered carrots, the server came to our table telling us to go up for our carvery, I said I'd ordered a different meal, only to be told it was waiting at the carvery end and to get my own veg . This was not what was advertised on the Easter Menu! My husbands beef was awful, he couldn't cut it, let alone chew it. My choice was mediocre and barely warm. Appreciate it was a very busy day but not a pleasant experience. It felt like we were on a conveyor belt.

Carvery. Plates were cold. Meat was raw and was being chucked in the bin in plain sight of customers. Waitress was very hard to understand. Coffee thick and desert well not worth £1. Will not be returning.

Very disappointed with my dessert. It was supposed to be apple crumble sundae.There was no crumble only 3 pieces of apple,ice cream and cream. No caramel sauce at all and £7.25. The carvery was goog

Really disappointed AGAIN, only 2other tables dining in the restaurant so not busy, drinks took a long time to come so my dad had to go to the bar himself where the barman was chatting on the phone, my creamy garlic mushrooms was just fried mushrooms in oil, my husband’s steak was half warm half cold, I ordered steak pie and was served chicken pie, which was replaced and a fee desert was offered, the hunters chicken was awful very small and chewy and no bacon. I live local and used the flyer regularly but under the new management it’s really gone down hill. On the upside the waitress was very nice. Not worth £130. ☹️

Very good evening meal. Restaurant was very quiet, excellent waitress service from Janika. Tasty lamb & chicken dishes. This is our 3rd meal here in the past few weeks & would return yet again!

Live nearby and often visit this place for lunch - fab food & atmosphere and great service :) highly recommend, has changed management recently but quality of food still high

Well what can we say...we sat and heard the cooks swear loudly, discussing how long things take in the microwave , speakly dreadfully at the polite waitress, clearly with no respect for her or their customers. When this was addressed by me as I could not sit and listen anymore, the cook responded "don't sit near the kitchen then" really .... rude man. Needs to learn manners. I have complained to the restaurant. Let's wait and see ....

I went here for my birthday celebration surprise. It is a lovely cosy friendly restaurant. We were greeted by a lady called Elizabeth who had clearly taken the time to read through our booking. On arrival she wished me a happy birthday, and show us to our 'cosy'seat, only to find my family there as a surprise. Elizabeth said she loved the look on my face, as i became emotional and handed us a menu. Another colleague took our drink order. The food was amazing, hot, nicely presented and delicious, very enjoyable. A little after our meal Elizabeth raised her voice and with cake in hand, asked everyone to join in with singing happy birthday. This was not expected, more emotions! I had a truly memorable day made even better with my family and Elizabeth's friendliness and attention to detail to make my day so special. Thank you so much Elizabeth, I can assure you we will return.

OMG!!!!! Me and my partner went for valentine's evening meal ( which was pre-ordered) absolutely shocking , service was very very poor , food was very very poor . An elderly couple sitting beside us left as they were fed up waiting on there main, turn's out they had given it too someone else!!! The lady got our bill wrong 3 times , the only good thing was we got our 2 drinks on the house .I will never go there again!!!!

Used to be a great place to eat ,but gone downhill! had booked for 12 o’clock Sunday lunch , only a few people at that time , menu had been made smaller and no steak and ale pie ( one of our favourites ! ) so opted for carvery everything was Luke warm and this is the earliest sitting! Not a good recommendation for the future , unfortunately other friends had previously the same experience , but gave them the benefit …but probably not again !

On arrival we were ignored and a group that came in after us were seen first. We were eventually sat at the back behind a screen. Orders were taken swiftly and however the starters were brought out separately and the brie bites where served cold. We asked about them and told they should be warm so sent them back when they arrived for the second time they were frozen in the middle. We then waited 35minutes for mains When the bill arrived we were told the service charge is optional and that was that. No apologies. They seemed short staffed for the amount of people in Would not return

We had tea and cake. Victoria sponge cake was dry and not fresh cream and nearly £7 a slice. Absolute ripoff. Told the waitress, but not really interested 😕

Best roast I've had in a restaurant in years. £13.50 all you can eat sides. I ordered the veggie Wellington and you can help yourself to everything else. Carrots, parsnips, Yorkshire,stuffing, sausages, roasties,mash,leaks,cauliflower cheese,red cabbage, green cabbage, boiled carrots. Full to the brim. We visited prime time on a Sunday and ate outside as fullbooked. Preferred it as it was quite. They come to get you when it's your turn to go up so you don't have to stand and queue. Free parking. Vegan options. Visited again 2/02/2024 Still amazing 👏 😍 💙 Staff welcoming and friendly, host put a big smile on out faces. We sat in the white tea room, it's defor is stunning. Same roast as last time and I cannot fault it. Left so full, I could barely move.

My brother Steve and Denise had their wedding afternoon tea here on 2nd February 2024. It was just perfect, the food was exceptional, the staff and service were fantastic and the attention to detail was meticulous. There were I think about 30 of us, we were all looked after very well. I highly recommend this venue, you won't be disappointed!!

My friend held her wedding reception here. The food was lovely, plenty of it and nice and hot. The staff couldn’t do enough for us and we all throughly enjoyed the day! Highly recommend.

I waited to write this as I’ve never had poor quality food here before so I was very sad. We chose the venue for a double birthday it was my daughter’s 21st. We thought it was a bit odd that they served hot spicy soup to my 7 year old I mean I like spice but I tried this omg it was too spicy. She then didn’t want to eat her main. My creamy mushroom was part cold but served on brown toast??? Which was odd. Everyone else enjoyed their caramel chicken so I thought maybe just a blip. Mains.. my daughters burger was good as was my sons and the fish and chips was good. However the carvery was cold. I didn’t want to complain as the staff seemed very nice and were stressed. I then tried the Yorkshire it was so cold even with gravy and stale/hard I broke my tooth. My daughter really wanted desert so we stayed. At no point did anyone ask if we wanted to celebrate the birthday in anyway. So we just had dessert paid was polite and despised it had really gone downhill. I’m not sure is it maybe new chefs? Lack of ingredients it was very poor in comparison to the past and left us a bit disappointed

Reasonable surroundings and friendly staff, however be very wary of the carvery, a chef who clearly has a greater opinion of himself than the meat he turns out to the customer. I’m guessing the meat was cut incredible thin to allow customers to get it down once they’d managed to get it into bite size pieces? The ridiculous process of knife sharpening, pan and tong swapping with a queue of people did nothing to impress only put people off, with many a rolled eye along the ever increasing line. A mess with deserts after a lengthy wait was resolved by the staff in a way that you’d expect, although the culprit was a familiar one it seems. We had high hopes for our first time, will not be returning.

Food I had was not as ordered and was tough and not edible, vegetables were not included and could be ordered at extra cost which I was not happy about so all I had for my dinner was a pot of chips for which I had to pay £14.95. I shall not be going there again and was even given a bill with 10% service charge which I did not pay. No compensation was offered.

Poor service: did not understand what the vegetarian in our group had ordered and gave them a random veggie burger on the menu. New staff that didn’t know what they were doing (acceptable) without adequate supervision from other staff (unacceptable). Poor food: undercooked (couldn’t cut though) parsnips, anaemic steak cooked to medium-well when ordered rare, soggy halloumi, a pathetic amount of guacamole in the California burger, pork belly so tough I could barely cut through it… apparently the fish and chips was good though.

I spent a lot of time viewing place to eat around Cambridge and looking at their menus before deciding to visit the high flyer. I choose this venue as it had a good choice of vegetarian options and also a number of my farthers favourite dishes and as we were getting together for his birthday I felt this would be a good choice so I booked a table for our party. On arrival we were given menus with a smaller list of options on, I asked why it wasn't the menu online and wasn't given an answer. So of course pretty much all of my father's favourites were missing along with some of the vegetarian options. Service was very slow, with long gaps between being given menus, orders being taken and the food coming out. The waitress did apologise a couple of times for this, but the restaurant wasn't busy. We have eaten here a few times previously but after this last visit we won't be returning. The food was ok, but nothing special considering how long we had to wait.

I went for lunch with friends on 15th January and was very impressed with the inside of the pub but from then on things went down hill. I chose for my lunch the chicken and leek pie but have an allergy to onions asked if any onion was in the pie as I am OK with leeks. The server went to kitchen came back saying yes it had so I chose hunters chicken instead as I know there isn't any onion. Well the meal they dished up was not hunters chicken but was chicken breast with bbq sauce plus a small container of chips and a dish of "coleslaw" which of course contains onion so couldn't eat it. No other vegetables on the plate and was told if I wanted them they were extra charges which is extortion. The chicken was tough and dry so I left it. My experience was not conducive to me going there again but my friends enjoyed their meals. The person in charge did offer to change meal but I said no as it had taken three quarters of an hour to get the meal we had. I was not offered a free meal in view of the complaint so paid £14.95 for nothing and had 10% service charge put on bill which I made them take off. Really unhappy.

This was our first visit to this restaurant, and what an amazing place. It was so inviting, spotlessly clean. The lady on reception was very professional & so lovely. We absolutely loved everything about our visit. All staff were very professional and it was nice to see them looking smartly dressed. We had the Sunday Roast which was one of the best I've ever had. We will definitely be returning....

That was my third visit to this beautiful place with an incredibly cozy atmosphere. The staff is friendly, and you almost feel like part of the family. <3 I've read some feedback mentioning a lack of variety in the menu, but I can assure you they have everything we need, and the food they offer is absolutely delicious. I know I will keep coming back every time I visit Ely. <3

The service was ok, drinks arrived very quickly. The waitress told us to wait before going to queue for our carvery as “there are too many people there”. I went after a bit, took my place in the queue only for another customer to barge in front of me, his friend then barged in behind him and said “I’m with him”. He did have the decency to say to the first guy that they had barged in front of me, and I just said “fill your boots”. The service at the carvery was woefully slow and with a queue of at least 6 people waiting, the chef just walked off into the kitchen. No apology, no explanation, there was another chef filling everything up so I don’t think he’d gone off to replenish supplies. I went back to the table and said I’d wait a bit, and that two people had rudely barged in front of me and the waitress happened to be near us and overheard. She apologised profusely and obviously knew who it was and said that they are “very demanding”. I went back to try again, the people who had barged in front of me were only then being served and then a waitress brought up one of their partners and pushed them in front of me too. I went and had a look at the food while I was waiting and wasn’t impressed so I went back and said to my husband we’d go elsewhere. I went to pay for the drinks and the same waitress apologised again, to be honest I would have expected to be offered the drinks on the house, but although very apologetic we still got charged. Appalling, you couldn’t pay me to try and eat there again

Spoke to a shift supervisor about business and a lovely bartender about drinks. They’ve got great drinks, great food, and even better service. Flawless place and worth a visit!

Very disappointing experience. Booked for Christmas' Eve. Pre-ordered and paid a deposit. We had chosen this place because of their 'famous Sunday roast' as described on the website. Therefore, we thought, perfect if you are looking for a great Christmas turkey. The place was cold and empty. Just us and another table. We thought that others were yet to come (after all it was only 7:30) but, no. Nobody else came. It certainly did not meet the festive spirit and we felt very uncomfortable. The waitress did not understand English making the experience even more uncomfortable. The starter was cold. The main was not coming until we realised that we actually had to get up and get it ourselves. I definitely did not expect self-service for a Christmas dinner. The food was so disappointing I cannot begin to say. Not freshly made. Turkey very poor quality to the taste and even Yorkshire pudding tasted as if it was made a week earlier. I then decide to cover up the poor dinner with extra gravy. As I get up I noticed that everything was being taken away. Not even 8 in the evening of the 24th of December, the restaurant was shutting down. I ask for a serving spoon for the gravy - it was taken away, and I am given a dirty spoon from the kitchen NOT EVEN RINSED. We left. (As I am writing I realised the the deposit prepaid was not considered in the final bill). NEVER AGAIN

The High Flyer is absolutely stunning. I was staying in Ely for a few days the came in for food. The service was impeccable and the food delicious. The whole ambience is delightful. The decor is aesthetically pleasing. I couldn't have chosen better. If you are in Ely please call in and you will not be disappointed. Warm, cosy and dog friendly too! Great experience all round.

Food slow at coming the carvery was cold service was terrible had my grand parents with me and we could hear staff arguing and swearing will never come back again

What a lovely gorgeous time we’ve just had at this amazing pub. So very well looked after - I wish I’d got the peoples’ names but the guy had a blue and white Christmas jumper on - and the lovely lady with blonde hair looked after us so well. We had two young boys with us and they treated them so brilliantly- playing with them and joking and making sure we all had everything. Food was delicious- especially the pork belly and the fantastic red cabbage! All in all a wonderful time and we will be back soon!

The Carvery was delicious. Piping hot and all roast meats cooked to perfection. Lots of accompanying side dishes, sauces and gravies. Also had a beautiful tasty glass of Chardonnay which was a pleasant surprise when ordering wine in a pub. The staff were very accommodating, friendly and professional. I have recommended it to many already and will certainly return.

Per-ordered food, which arrived 3/4 of an hour late, carvery was cold, waitresses was not professional and clearly not happy to be here, as now neither was I. Room was extremely cold resulting in customers sat eating in their coat.

Great stay over night at The High Flyer. Room well appointed, well maintained and very clean. Extensive menu and food good standard. Restaurant and tea rooms beautiful. Breakfast very good which was on top of the very reasonable room rate. Recommend.

Been for carvery a few months ago and always been happy with food. Not so good today unfortunately. Limited choice of vegetables… cabbage inedible., no mash potato and no green veg. Wasn’t that warm either 😞

Fantastic meal - really great value. Service first rate and friendly staff

I am currently staying in the hotel and the morning impressions are not good at all. The shower was stone cold at 9.30 in the morning. We then went down for breakfast at 10am to be greeted by no one at all. No staff on reception or in the restaurant. The cleaner bless her was trying to help out and we heard comments that there is no one in yet and kitchen staff were frantically trying to phone people. There was about 12 people just milling around waiting to either check in or out as well. I didn’t wait for the breakfast so left to find breakfast elsewhere. I had a table booked for 5 people in the restaurant this evening 4th nov but have now cancelled due to this poor service. I have paid a £100 a night for our room so this level of service is appalling.

Good friendly staff and a Service

We use the high flyer a lot it can be very hit and miss, but when Felipe is cooking we have noticed it is always exceptional, the new waitress Anastasia is very good and happy

Great shame that the food doesn't complement the setting and the attentive staff. Good soup but the seafood platter should go back in the freezer and don't add prawn crackers.

We hadn’t been to the High Flyer for years but decided to pay a visit today. The staff were so welcoming and couldn’t do enough for us. The carnivorous people were well catered for. My one slightly negative comment would be the lack of vegetarian options. There were a few but a couple more would really enhance the menu. Perhaps a veggie tart or falafels with a large salad. But overall a great lunch and we have already rebooked.

We had lunch here today and we loved our main meals, fish and chips and Bollywood Bird. Great flavour, big portions and fast service. The staff were all super friendly too. The only complaint we have is the desserts. The hot chocolate brownie was really dry and mostly tasteless and my brownie sundae wasn't much better. The brownie was dry and the ice cream had freezer burn. You'd expect a lot more for £7 and £7.25 respectively. The desserts really let this restaurant down. 😔

Previously eaten at the High Flyer a couple of times without any issues. However today I visited with my friend. We chose the high flyer as she's a vegetarian and they have different veggie options plus a vegan menu. However we had a pretty terrible experience. My friend ordered a salad and asked for no chicken on it. (She's veggie) .. The waiter took the order and said this was fine.. We received the salad and it had chicken on. So my friend then politely asked for another salad without chicken. The waiter even admitted he'd put the order through incorrectly and apologised.... However we had been seated right next to the open kitchen. So when the waiter took the salad back to ask for a new one, minus the chicken. We heard the chef say "why didn't she read the F*****G menu" ... which my friend did and had specifically asked for no chicken, and therfore was told this wasn't a problem when she ordered! Obviously we found this use of language from the chef incredibly offensive and rude... After we had received our food and after I had already eaten one piece of the garlic bread, (I ordered the garlic mushrooms starter). I realised the second piece provided was covered in mould on the underneath side. Having seen this I had no appetite left to eat anything else... After this whole experience and being so rudely spoken about due to the restaurants mistake and then receiving such disgusting food, I won't be returning. I will also be warning my friends/family who have previously eaten at the restaurant, not to retun in a hurry!

1 star! No welcoming from staff! Two of them where on their phones, one guy staring at the computer! Stood there for a few minutes before we were acknowledged, even though they weren’t busy! Veg soggy veg all two of them soggy cabbage & school...

This is a good spot to meet friends. The staff are friendly but not rushed. The building is clean and welcoming. I didn't eat but it looked good and people told us it was nice. They obviously take pride in their beer as the Adnams was very good. It doesn't have loud music playing, so you can hear what people say which is a huge plus!

Very good carvey. Suggest a booking. The carvey is not served at the table. You have to make the queue and serve by yourself.

Service was appalling, over an hour waiting for food . Meals were not with the vegetables set out on menu, and when queried the correct vegetables couldn't be produced. Belly of pork was too tough to even cut through. Hunter's chicken had very little sauce and therfore dry. Jug of water was lukewarm, no ice provided. Will not return there. The bill also added an extra meal which we hadn't had. That was corrected.
