As a frequent visitor to Edinburgh and occasional user of this restaurant over the years, it would appear that the management rely heavily on its name when it was once excellent and reasonably priced. Sadly, this is no more. Visiting the St Johns restaurant was a complete disappointment and it is beyond belief what they are charging for largely basic vegetarian food. Salads were ok but the 3 salads that I chose from a rather ordinary selection were run of the mill - ie beetroot, potato salad and carrot. These tablespoons of each were served with a jacket potato and cost a whopping £10.65!!!!! Granted it was my fault for not checking the price beforehand but even so this price can never be justified even when there are overheads to consider. The following day I visited the museum of modern art where their salads were far more creative and tasty and with a jacket potato cost £6.50 - much more reasonable and of a higher quality altogether. So if you want yo throw away your hard earned cash on bog-standard food - just visit Hendersons. Biggest rip-off in town! And definitely gone downhill in terms of food quality.

This is the branch of Henderson's under St John's Church in Edinburgh. Popped in for a take-away lunchtime today. Two people in front of me in the queue but it took the girl behind the counter forever just to explain what was on offer (despite the fact there is a HUGE menu on the wall!). Why don't they have more people on duty lunchtimes? Gave up, went to McDonald's and got served in a flash. What's the point in trying to support local businesses when they don't invest in resources. And the Festival hasn't even started yet! Goodness knows how they'll survive when it gets busy (like five people in the queue)

We visited St John's and had a lovely conversation with the rector, he asked if we'd been below to the garden, that there was a nice restaurant there, so we walked down and found Hendersons. What a great atmosphere in there. There was outside seating, but we chose to sit inside and enjoy the art all over the walls. It was still near breakfast time so we weren't famished, but Vern had a coffee with an apple turnover. I had a ginger beer and scone with butter and jelly. What a perfect scone! They had quiches, dessert delights, wraps and everything we saw looked good. The prices were a bit high, but the value was in the food. The staff were polite, even as busy as they were that day. Side Note: The church is going to be going through some renovations that will displace the occupants of the downstairs so I don't know how long they will be there.

There are so many other amazing veggie/vegan places to eat in Edinburgh, so please don't waste your time here!Having eaten veggie food all around the world for over 25 years, it's with a heavy heart that I'm writing this review of what must be on of the most dire "vegetarian" cafes I've ever visited - which is quite embarrassing for the owner, chef and staff who may read this. Sorry, but it's true and I think you need to know......- No welcome from the staff behind the counter and very slow service- Staff didn't know the vegan options - had to repeat our request for info many times- Salad bar uninspiring and no choice of dressings - Tiny portion sizes - Cake very tough texture, but brownies felt apart so just crumbs on the plate - Totally over priced (but the mainly American tourists seemed happy to pay for "the experience)- Dirty toiletsI left feeling quite angry and very disappointed - having paid over £30 for 2 people (food, cake, drink), we were still hungry and nothing we ate was great. Henderson's once had an excellent reputation, but is now just a commercial venture - putting profit over food quality and customer satisfaction, Sad.Check online for a range of great veggie/vegan places - or enter Hendersons at your peril!

I feel guilty for suggesting lunch here to vegetarian friends. The selection of food was poor, service was dire, and the salad was tasteless and oily. The lack of bread was surprising, what is so wrong with having bread with a salad? I was informed that bread is only available with soup, and that I would have to buy that if I wanted any bread. My food was overpriced, and I felt I had been 'had'. The worst was the state of the toilets. I had to queue for ten minutes, only to decide they were too awful to use. I reported this to a staff member who informed me that he thought they were fine. A lady in the café told me the toilets were notoriously bad, and it was usual for them not to have any soap. Nice surroundings let down by food and service.

I have been to Hendersons twice before, both times I came with my mother. The first time was in April, the second time was this month. Hendersons has various different areas where people can sit down to eat. The first time I came to Hendersons we chose to sit in a cosy area in the back of the building. The atmosphere was homely, and pleasantly quiet. There are toilets in this area which I found to be rather pleasant. The second time I came to Hendersons we chose to sit on the other side, in a much more centralised location among lots of art on the walls. The atmosphere was very pleasant, and the art was rather good. The toilets near this section were really not as nice as the other ones, my mother complained that it was like having to go to the toilet on an aeroplane as they were so small. The food was excellent. As Hendersons is a vegetarian restaurant, I found their vegetarian options to be excellent and varied. Many of their options were also suitable for vegans. There was an overall wholesome environment. The food was an excellent quality on both visits, being prepared in good time and delivered to each table by the staff. The first time I came I had vegetarian haggis with clapshot (as an evening meal), the second time I came was earlier in the day (lunchtime) so I had the full vegan breakfast. The price for each meal is unfortunately rather high, and it is for this reason (along with the unsatisfying toilets the second time) that I have given Hendersons 4 stars rather than 5. They do however give a student discount of 10% when shown a valid student card, which is applicable to the relevant student's meal.

I tend not to review places unless I absolutely love them - I really like giving the five stars! I'm reviewing Henderson's restaurant at St John's because of what it could be, rather than what it is. Starting with the space: it's located in the busy west end of Princes St, yet incredibly quiet. The shadowy basement of the church offers a cool and picturesque atmosphere, with more tables outdoors if you're lucky enough to catch a ray of sun in Edinburgh (with a view to the cemetery, but that adds up to the shadowy-picturesque feel of it all). The inside is decorated with both broad and tiny tables, comfy couches and random chairs, making it a quite nice place to hang out on your own with a book or for an unpretentious lunch/tea with friends. As for the food, you get vegetarian and vegan options only, spread through three counters: hot, cold, and desserts. Now we get to the bad bits. If you go there once, the choice seems fantastic. If you go there frequently, however, you will get tired of the same potato croquette, bean burger, or quiche, and the same choice of salads. Then there's the price. The restaurant (maybe because of the prices of their deli elsewhere in Edinburgh) is ridiculously dear for the type of food and self-service, lunch hour, style. What could be a simple food much healthier and much tastier option for vegetarians than the Nero across the street becomes an unjustifiable luxury. Finally, there's the staff. I want to think it's because of the acoustics of the room, but the truth is that they are in general unpleasant and deaf to whatever you tell them, never listening to your full order and sighing impatiently if you ask for anything else.Again, I would love to love this place, and I hate to give bad reviews but, if they are worth anything, then I hope this feedback may contribute to turn this restaurant into the kind of place it deserves to be.

The sign out front says breakfast served so we were looking forward to a nice vegetarian breakfast before our busy day on a Sat. They don't serve breakfast anymore apparently, using the excuse that they didn't have time to serve a breakfast and also be prepared for lunch. Yet this is still advertised out front. Really disappointed in this as we would have found another place but didn't have time so had to settle for a couple of scones and coffee. Scones were nice, but a bit stodgy. If someone from Henderson's is reading this I suggest you shouldn't advertise what you don't provide. I suggest you change your sign. Scones, pastries and coffee isn't really a breakfast.

Found this place by accident on a walk (lived in and around Edinburgh for years) and what a great discovery! Lovely coffee and unusual yet tasty vegan and wheat free cakes! Highly reccomended. Beautiful location and scenery and perfect for sitting out in sun.

I visited Hendersons recently and had one of the nicest vegetarian eating experiences ever.I was in a party of four and we all ordered different starters and mains , each arriving without delay and cooked to perfection.I'm not a vegetarian but the quality of the food offered was excellent and another visit can not come around too soon.

I read about this restaurant in my Edinburgh guidebook and wanted to stop by. When my family and I made it downstairs, I was amazed by the beauty of the vaulted ceilings and cosy atmosphere. The food was delicious and creative in the variety of vegetarian choices. I was happy to see a few tasty vegan offerings of cakes. The staff were friendly and helpful. This restaurant is a must-see for any vegetarian visitor to Edinburgh. I would definitely stop by here again.

Passing by this busy Veggie Restaurant often I had wished at some point to try the food. Yesterday my wish was granted and the food was well worth the wait. The soup, side salads and lattes were delicious, even the whole meal bread excelled. However, the service was a little slowand the interior a trifle gloomy. Thankfully, these minor irritants did not detract from the superb culinary experience.

When you want amazing healthy food, Hendersons is the place. It is in central Edinburgh, and caters for veggies, diabetics and gluten free. They have the most fantastic vegetarian haggis and great desserts.

Whilst visiting the Edinburgh Festival, we went to an amazing art and crafts exhibition at St Johns and were really surprised to find this atmospheric and excellent veggie restaurant underneath the arches of the church. Whilst not a veggie, I'm always keen to sample fresh, well made and wholesome food in interesting settings. Hendersons had a rustic organic feel to it - serving huge portions of delicious hot food such as lasagne and haggis and clapshot (veggie style) with a brilliant selection of salads with fresh organic ingredients. A super place to pop into for lunch - you'll leave feeling full and healthy!

I had a lovely lunch here last Sunday, very old fashioned but with super vegetarian food. It is a lovely place to go after a stroll in the Princes Street Gardens - I visited it 25 years ago and it has not changed a lot, food still as good

As a vegetarian, it is often difficult to find great places to eat with lots of choices, but Hendersons never fails to offer great cuisine for vegetarian diets. The food is amazing, they have lots of options and you aren't offered the usual omelet or pasta! Some of my favorites are the potato croquettes and curries, I also love the trifle! The atmosphere in the evening is great and they often have great live music. All in all this place is brilliant and would recommend.

We only had coffee and pastry here, but both were reliably wonderful. We stayed across the street at the Caledonian and ate at Hendersons 4 times throughout our trip. Their coffees and pastries are delicious and the atmosphere just lovely, all stone with outdoor and indoor seating. The waitstaff are all lovely, friendly and helpful. We would have loved to have a full meal here, but it just didn't work out. I would definitely frequent this place if I lived in Edinburgh on a regular basis!

This is a favourite of mine. A long established vegetarian restaurant that offers masses of food choices, a daily specials board and lots of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. Tucked away but right near the centre of Edinburgh. A great place for a special meal and a chance to meet interesting people.

I stumbled upon hendersons by accident as I was looking around the fringe, bewildered and it was a lovely oasis of calm beneath a bustling city. The food was excellent, massive portion which I couldn't finish because I was stuffed! Be warned though that if the staff advise you that there's ginger in the food, there's properly ginger in the food! I'm not a fan of ginger but she did warn me so that's on my head. The staff were lovely and friendly, my little dog had a nice place to sit and make friends outside and the lady who served me was very helpful about directions and things so it was very nice to have such a positive experience on my first outing to Edinburgh. As a new vegetarian it's nice to see what amazing dishes can be created as I have noticed that in other places all vegetarians seem to get offered is veggie burgers and macaroni cheese so this was a wonderful place to eat and I shall definitely be back to try some of the other food on offer.

I was delighted to find this place. It serves good, proper vegetarian food - that is: food which includes pulses etc. The woman who served me was very helpful and friendly. I found it was fine to be a solo diner there. I didn't feel awkward or out of place. The helping was huge and a reasonable price. Unfortunately, I only found this restaurant on my last day in Edinburgh. I would definitely eat there again if/when I return. My only quibble would be that the toilets were a bit manky.

Hendersons is celebrating its 50th year in business and deservedly so. I ate in Henderson's Bistro twice and enjoyed it both times. The service is welcoming and relaxed. The food is fresh, organic, appealingly plated and absolutely delicious. It is often hard for me to find healthy food (especially vegetables) while travelling and Hendersons is an outstanding find.

All of the dishes that were on offer looked fabulously fresh and as two meat eaters found the choice of dishes on offer fantastic and a welcome alternative to normal high street chain options. It was a very hot day and although al fresco dining was an attractive option the wonderful shaded indoor cavern provided a perfect sejourn for lunch, loved it and would return again.

First visit to Hendersons and was looking forward as research told me that this was a recommended vegetarian restaurant.Went there for breakfast and it was kind of dissapointing. It was over priced for what you got and the standard and quality was not great.I think this is yet another example of a vegetarian establishment that is 'resting on past glories'...They really have to keep things up tempo and welcoming and not just offer sub standard food because it is classed as 'vegetarian'.

Been here twice now, the first time was about a year ago and we had a few wines and some lunch and it was great. Tucked just of Princess St in the gardens its out of the way and set in some very tranquil gardens. It is a little oasis of 'zen' away from the hubub of shopping. The second time was a few days ago and things had not changed!Again we popped in to have a coffee and a snack and the food still looks great and tastes great too. They have a range of gluten free items. We had the soup which was thick and scrummy and a meal all in itself.

I used to be a regular at Hendersons, over the past few years this was one of my favorite places to stop for a coffee or lunch on a lazy weekend afternoon. Not any more. Food is just not as good as it was. Coffee and cakes/scones are still decent and the view / outside bit is lovely on a sunny afternoon ... I really hope Hendersons will restore its previous glory.

Met here with a group of friends midweek lunch. I was looking forward to a 'Henderson's Vegetarian Experience' - what I got was a very poor inedible mish mash of wilted salad vegetables and stoggy quiche. There were 5 of us in our party and three of us couldnt eat the meal on offer. My quiche was cold and on re-heating it arrived on the plate swimming in a watery mess which had obviously leaked from the now now rubbery egg mix in the quiche. The falafel faired no better and my colleague left most of it.Pricewise this place isnt good value - slice of quiche and salad - 7.50 which would be better spent on a nice fresh healthy 'pub lunch' in one of the neighbouring establishments.None of us will be back - needless to say - pity as the venue has potential.A bit cold at this time of the year - we had to keep our coats on.Coffee and tea to follow - ok but cakes look like they have been lying around for some time and none of the salads/sides/or cakes look particularly appetising. We had hoped this was a Hendersons experience but it turned out the opposite to what we had imagined. They need to get this right - before it impacts on the flagship Hendersons as I am not keen to go anywhere either at the moment.

This is one of Edinburgh's hidden gems and I can't believe it is closing. Very good food, warm and welcoming cafe, and the best tofu and oatcakes I have ever had. Edinburgh will be worse without it.
