Hay Conservative Club in Powys

Visited for the second time for Sunday lounch with are friends Sandra, can not falt the meal or the service. It's the most tasty meal we have had for a long time, We will be returning, well worth the 20-mile journey.

Unexpectedly good choice, great service, delicious hot food, great value for money too.

Booked before hand .Very nice man behind bar, waitresswas very pleasant .Food was excellent .Only complaint cauliflower cheese could of done with more cooking .Plenty of meat and veg all piping hot and hot plate. We don't know how we manged it but we had apple pie and cream to finish . Would highly recommend and we will definitely be back when next in area .

We went on a recommendations specifically for their fish and chip Thursday/Friday special - and we were not disappointed. A very large, lightly battered and tasty piece of fish, more chips than you could eat and a very good tartare sauce - all for £10.50. Will definitely eat there again. Only minor "criticism", there is no wine list as such and a limited selection of wine available by the bottle.

We visited for a friend's and family lunch to celebrate a birthday. The meal was amazing. So much food to eat. Cooked lovely, hot food. Don't get me started on desserts. Lovely. Would recommend to all my friends and family or strangers. You have to.book

My wife and I had a meal in the Hay Conservative Club on Tuesday evening after reading the excellent reviews left by other satisfied customers. We were very lucky to begin with as no food is served on Mondays or Tuesdays but due to a large party of 15 ladies having booked for a private party the very helpful and friendly young barman said he would "squeeze us in". We both opted for the pork steak which came with two rashers of bacon, an egg, chips and peas all served piping hot and cooked beautifully. I also had a pint of Butty Bach which was crystal clear and quite the best pint of that beer I have ever had, pity I was driving, a couple more would have been nice. All in all, if you want excellent food served in generous portions and fantastic value for money look no further than this Club. Thank you to the barman and Martino who I believe is the chef, he also looks after the cellar too so I was told.

Struggling to find somewhere to eat, we popped into this club…what a find! We were greeted by a lovely lady, and got some drinks. The menu is varied (although they’d run out of jacket potatoes!), I chose an omelette and hubby chose ham, egg and chips. Couldn’t believe the size of our meals and how many chips we got! My ham and mushroom omelette was really tasty, as was hubby’s meal, and although the chips were divine, we ended up leaving a lot purely because we were full! The room is a typical club room, but the staff, food and value for money here make up for it. Would definitely recommend you try it.

Stopped for lunch while on a day trip had ham eggs and chips fantastic the ham melted in your mouth the wife had home made quiche which she also raved about would definitely recommend

Martino’s meals are the best you’ll find in town by a country mile - amazing homemade chips, Beautifully cooked steaks with the best peppercorn sauce around, and incredible roast dinners. Portion sizes are plentiful, and food quality is always bang on. You cannot beat it.

What can I say .We had a two night stay in Hay on Wye.We looked at places to eat in the evening .We decided to try this place because it looked good food and good value.Wow Delicious hot food huge portions .So much so we went both nights The first night my husband had Fish and Chips and he said it was the best he had ever had in a restaurant. Both nights the food was amazing and the staff so friendly Would highly recommend.

I don't think I have ever eaten anything other than a buffet in a Conservative Club so it was a bit random when Hubby said we're having Mother's day lunch there. I have to say it was really good and we were spoilt with far to much food . Staff were lovely so it was a pleasant way to spend lunchtime. Obviously popular with the locals who were picking up take out roast dinners !

Sunday lunch for my nieces 18th and just stunning. Beef melted in your mouth, plenty if veg, great cauliflower cheese and perfect gravy.

Just had the best Sunday lunch for 11 of us here and would absolutely recommend it, great food loads of it with well kept beer and lagers on offer and all at excellent value for money. Which is hard to find in hay on wye

Good value for money when it comes to food and drink, nice casual atmosphere that locals like. There is also ample parking, an outside drinking/smoking area and a ramp is available for disabled access.

Excellent takeaway Sunday lunch would be hard to beat.

Booked in with the wife on Friday lunchtime for fish and chips. Best fish and chips we have tasted for a long time. Service was first class. Polite and friendly. Already booked for next week. Excellent portion. Couldn’t manage desert.

Popped in in the off chance and ordered 4 fish and chips. Outstanding service hot food and hot plates. Clean and tidy and very friendly.

Sunday dinner is full on, plenty of it and always well cooked with help yourself vegetables. Selection of meats usually beef, lamb, chicken and pork for Sunday and a good selection of steak, fish ,chicken, curry Tec.

No welcome in this inn!!. Called in today with my daughter and although I am a member of The Gough Conservative club in Ystradgynlais and had my membership card with me, I was told I was unable to get a drink as I was not a member of the Hay Club. I have been welcomed in many other Con Clubs throughout UK but not it appears this one. Times have changed. What hurts even more, I lived in this club for many years as my father was Stewart there from 1945 to 1980's. The old song "We`ll keep a welcome in the hillside" clearly does not apply to the Hay Con. Club .

We often ate at the Con Club prior to lockdown and were never disappointed; excellent food, generous portions and bargain prices. During the lockdown they have operated a very successful takeaway service which has given us all something to look forward to. Friday night is fish and chip night and Sunday’s wouldn’t be complete without a Martinho’s delicious roast. As the doors open again to table service we look forward to booking a table and enjoying a drink or two with your wonderful food. Thank you for keeping us sane and giving us something to look forward to during these crazy times.

The meals are the best, there value for money and the Sunday lunched are to die for , the staff are lovely aswell

Traditional Sunday lunch for anyone who has a good appetite & wants home cooking. Make sure you book! Also does takeaway and is great for people on their own, you can sit in the back room with many other people on their own who like a good Sunday lunch when there is no point in cooking it for one!!

Friendly club open to visitors. Great beer - butty bach and reasonably priced for Hay on wye too. Clean and warm and welcoming and the food looks good although I have not sampled it yet. Well worth a visit

Ate here on a Friday night following a recomendation from the landlady of our cottage. We did book as advised which was neccessary as full. Very friendly welcome and the best fish and chips we have had for some time. Large piece of well battered fish with proper hand cut potato chips and homemade mushy peas, all piping hot and fresh. Just managed to fit in a sticky toffee pudding but felt very full on way home. Great value and excellant food.

Visited here on numerous occasions food is fantastic, recommend the chicken and ribs and definitely the Sunday lunch make sure you book you will not be disappointed. Staff very friendly and accommodate for any food allergies as a celiac. Nothing is to much to ask for, huge portions and reasonibly priced. I wouldn't go anywhere else.Martino, Michelle, nial, Amber and Cerys keep doing what your doing amazing staff.

Excellent Sunday roast for the family. Very reasonable prices, good beer and friendly, efficient service. Large portions of very tender meat, lovely potatoes and lots of veg. Highly recommended!

We had a delicious Sunday lunch here. The generous portions of meat was very tender and tasty. Served with a huge variety of vegetables. Perfect! It was very reasonably priced too.

Big space, a bar and seperate restaurant, Sky TV. I had a really good meal, watched the Ashes on a big screen. Nice place.

Good food, even better prices. Warm welcome even as a Labour supporter. Also supplied with foil to wrap the chips my wife couldnt finish when the barman spotted me wrapping chips in a napkin.

This is the best place to go for a night out in Hay. Always a great laugh because the staff are so friendly and they all have a wicked sense of humour. Plus the price of drinks is very reasonable.

As far as 'pub grub' goes, it's the best around. The steak and chips with peppercorn sauce is fantastic and brilliant value for money.

I have been going there for the last 6 years as have most of the caravan site I was on as a seasonal pitch holder.The cook his name is Martinez he is portugese who is not a chef but what a cook.I have been through the whole menus and every meal was cooked to perfection.The Sunday lunch is also fantastic.Be aware you have to book for Sunday it is that popular.My name is Bill stonelake my site is ash brook caravan site.

Stayed at a bed and breakfast who recommended the "Conservative Club" for an evening meal. We were dubious as knowing of con clubs in the past as old men's drinking and smoking clubs did not inspire confidence! What a surprise!! The food was amazing. A good selection on the menu. Well cooked and presented, loads of it and very very tasty. Served by friendly staff. We were there on a Friday evening and it was fish and chips night. Although we did not have fish and chips we saw people with massive pieces of fish and it looked like they were thoroughly enjoying the meal. Would definitely eat there again.

An awesome place to eat, drink & socialise. The staff are wonderful and the food for the value and taste is out of this world. Highly recommend!!

Had the most fantastic fillet steak this evening. Cooked to perfection with all the trimmings and the best homemade chips. Food is always excellent and very reasonably priced. Sunday lunches are also fantastic and so are the cod (whale) and chips.

If you are Conservative, over 60 and like a chat with friendly locals, this is the place for you. If not, it probably won't be your scene.

What a lovely friendly and welcoming place, food was absolutely stunning. I had the surf & turf that came with homemade chips and homemade onion rings, my grandson had Marco' s special burger and my friend had steak all the food was outstanding. Very highly recommend you try it out, you won't be disappointed.

What an amazing meal for 18 I had last night. Thankyou to Michelle, Martino and Niall for making it a great get together for Christmas. The Christmas dinner was gorgeous but just annoyed we couldnt fit it all in.

Friday is fish & chip day @ Hay on Wye Conservative club & my partner & I have just enjoyed the best meal of fish & chips we have ever tasted, the batter was so light & crispy & the fish full of flavour. Certainly the best place to go in Hay on Wye for a very tasty & inexpensive meal.

Excellent place to visit for Sunday lunch reasonable price & plenty to eat in nice surroundings. Members club but visitors & non members made very welcome. Food served Wednesdays to Sundays with Thursdays being chefs specials day. Well worth a visit for good food at good prices.
