Hartburn Fish Bar in Stockton-on-Tees

Don’t usually write reviews but was so disappointed just had to! After a long day at work decided to treat myself to fish and chips. Had never tried Hartburn Fish Bar before even though ‘my local. Never again - I’m not that fussy an eater but the fish was absolutely inedible. I’ve given 2 stars cos the chips were passable so managed to avoid the whole meal going in the bin.

Re cooked chips that were dark and dry as sticks. The smallest fish. Very disappointing. You shouldn’t be charged full price for poor quality reheated food.

After really nice fish and chips a few saturdays back decided to order 2 x fish & chips tonight online for collection. I appreciate it was a monday evening and it isn't as busy as a weekend but it was very disappointing. The chips were like they'd been cooked hours ago and the fish was soggy and not an experience to be repeated. Certainly not at over £16. 75% of our meals went in the bin.

We often call in and pick up fish and chips which we usually enjoy. I don't know what had happened to the fish last time but it was dry and a bit tough as though it had been warmed up or cooked for too long. Not sure if we'll chance it again as we can't afford to waste money.

I used to use this fish shop before but that was with the old staff. Since it has changed hands it has improved one hundred percent. This is not just from one visit but visits at different times.

Disgusting undercooked cold food arrived. Phone them and they agreed a full refund and then went back on their word. Please avoid

Ignore any bad old reviews, I’m told these were when it was owned by someone else. Fantastic gluten free cod and chips and sausage, took amazing care to be coeliac friendly and do everything separate. Love the chips and they filled me and coeliac husband with confidence. Absolute must if you’re GF and in the area

Called in for a quick take out lunch. Ordered small cod and a bread bun. No lie the cod was no bigger than a fish finger smothered in soggy batter. The bread bun was dry with no spread/butter. The whole fish fit in one half of the dry bun folded. If I had opened the box in the shop I would have asked for a refund.

The fish itself was nice but the batter was very soggy, the "large chips" if you could call them that were bone dry, not sure how old they were. I have been a few times but this was a huge disappointment, not worth the price really.

Went there tea time today got two fish o e chips. The batter on the fish was like concrete, chip to dry .never going back.

Third time we have ordered from here over the past three weeks and really disappointed overall. Firstly, the food is good and no denying that, chips very nice, fish is normally good and not overcooked - kebab meat is shocking, avoid. However a few issues to make people aware of; They take absolutely ages to deliver when order for delivery. Now, don't get me wrong, when it is busy there isn't much you can do about it, but they don't inform customers at all and even continue to suggest around 1 hour via Just Eat. Tonight it took 2h45 minutes and one phone call before it arrived, simply inexcusable without any information. The portion sizes are constantly hit and miss. First week we tried, good size as expected for what we paid for - great we thought, decent food at reasonable prices. Last week, ordered a fish parmesan, which at £6.80 was around the size of a regular fish - no issue with that, but other regular fish was dry and overcooked, rock hard better. Tonight, same meal as last week, managed to take even longer to arrive. When it did, literally half the size of the fish we had last week, but same price, embarrassing and couldn't be shared between two of us. Family of five to eat, but really poor for what was paid. All in all, really disappointed that the food was on the most part good. But service and portion sizes are awful. Due to this constant let down on this side of things, we won't be visiting again and will look for another outlet to try instead going forward. May be worth it if you can collect, but avoid delivery at all costs.

Gorgeous fresh Fish & Chips served quickly and efficiently by friendly staff. Don't need to say anything else.

Great food and staff good bit of cheeky banter with them Parmo was best I've tasted and large fish was bit too big to manage! Gonna try fish Parmo next!

Yuk, the fish was baked hard and dry, it must have been in the warmer for ages. The chips were no better. It used to be a decent chippy but is now on my avoid list!!!!!

Used Hartburn Fish Bar who offer a varied menu at competitive prices. Service was first class. Could certainly recommend.

Can't fault the new owners, not tried the parmos yet but been 3 times and had different fish orders, chips, sausage, pineapple, curry sauce and all lovely. It's nice to not have to queue for ages at Oxbridge when this is so close too!

excellent quality just put your request in and grt what you asked for my family and f11111iends never out of the place large cod lightly battered 5pounds and 30p beautiful .the only place for me and friend ..family

Waited 90 mins for delivery because they needed longer to prepare it. It was lukewarm and seemed like it had been left out for ages. I have carried food back from this shop and was a lot hotter. Give you 2 stars as the mushy peas were nice warmed up. The rest was picked at and mostly binnedNever again and the worst local delivery experience from the nearest takeaway to us.

Excellent good value and small portions available. Always fresh and lots of variety. Staff are efficient and friendly.

Lovely, freshly prepared cod, & tasty chips. Not the cheapest in the area, but worth it. Good selection of alternative dishes.

Excellent fish and chips, excellent staff. Food is cooked while you wait so really fresh and consequently well worth the wait.

Used to visit here maybe once a week but since it’s been took over it’s gone right down the nick raw potato chips looking days old Won’t be using again

I don't know about raw potato as others have written, but my medium cod was grey, had no huge white flakey chunks, just fell into greasy grey crumbs. Batter total sogginess. I cannot believe that I have had such bad quality fish and chips in NE England.

The new owners really need to take a cookery course. Raw potato in fish pattie. Need to change your oil in the fryer. This was your second and last chance. Such a shame we never get a decent chippy. A 1 star is too much

Tried the parmo and sad to say.... we were told it was told cooked fresh to order.... by fresh I think they meant cooked from frozen...also ordered kebab meat that tasted like the kind you buy and microwave from fultons....sauce was as expected not house made...salad was fresh...no onion like the picture and chips tasted stale.....then received a message from them on Facebook to refute this.....I offered to help them out and give them some advice...post deleted....however food still bad and they bury their heads in the sand....also said sauces made fresh... I think not

Short of time we went here and the fish batter was disgusting thick slop but with a very hard outer shell , the fish had no taste and the chips were soggy

Fresh cooked to order, delightful staff and good selection of food. The batter is crisp and not thick and stodgy, the sausages have loads of flavour. Well done. Always clean too

We got a dozen fish and chips for a family night, last Saturday. The food was delicious and the portions were very generous. The service was excellent (even carrying some of the bags to the car for me). I would totally recommend the place.

We biught fish and chips here tonight. The batter was cold,uncooked and slimy and the fish cold and grey. I took the trouble to return them and the assistant was quite rude and reluctant to help. Eventually agreed to replace the fish. On arriving home to serve them they were even worst than the first ones. Uck!!

This small fish and chip shop is the best I've been to and the best in Stockton(I'd say) it has decently priced food and it is all delicious.

We moved into the area a couple of days ago and just wanted some quick fish and chips. We've never had bad fish and chips anywhere in Yorkshire. Whitby, Pickering, East Ayton, Scarborough - they've always been good. Fresh, crispy and melt in the mouth batter, lovely fresh white cod and beautiful home made chips are what we were used to. You will get none of things in this place. When my old man took it out of the paper we exchanged worried glances. The batter was just a thin congealing layer of yellow filmy stuff around the fish not the lovely golden crispy gorgeous stuff we are used to. The fish was actually grey and kind of brown in most areas. The chips were so soft, floppy and cold we both spat them out and dumped the whole "fish and chips" in the bin and made do with sandwiches.

Food gorgeous and excellent value as ever- staff always are so friendly! Never been disappointed. Would 100% recommend, especially to those who are gluten free.

WHAT A WASTE OF MONEY FOR LUKE WARM AND SOGGY MEAL. Really annoyed given the cost. Staff also need a trip to the charm school.

Heartburn fish bar is a general fish shop which offers much more.

Very disappointing, telephoned order for prior notice for family 11 meals, on arriving home, part order missing, when notified staff questioned complaint and was food barely warm. Will certainly it use again. Trying to support local business!

Sadly my first bad review,I called here just after 4 30 today and ordered 2 fish 1 chips and a carton of peas,sadly they were between cold and warm ,the batter wasn t crisp at all it was like mush,maybe it was the warm up from lunchtime.It didn t help when my wife had told me to go to the one at Oxbridge!

Ordered gluten free fish and chips as well as ordinary battered fish. Both versions were delicious, the portions were generous and the staff were really friendly and helpful.

I've only just discovered this place and couldn't wait to go and try it out!!! Definitely go again really enjoyed it and the service was great!! The batter isn't your normal batter it's made with rice flour so a little different but was still lovely!

Nice chippy, they offer lots of other takeaway food, not sure if it's any good, but the fish and chips are well worth going for. Place looks clean, food cooked where you can see it and staff are friendly.

Inside it reeks of cooking fat. Had to wash all my cloths after, food was average at best. Passed it a second time recently and I could smell the place from 100 yards. Not pleasant at all.

Never went to my usual chippy, thought I would try this one as it was recommended to me, well never again it was awful, ordered 2 fish 1 chips and peas, the battery was that thick it was not cooked properly it took us 5 minutes to get home, opened the paper, the batter on the fish was so soggy, it was horrible fish inside wasn't that good either, it's as if the oil was not hot enough to cook the fish, won't be going again, from a very disappointed fish and chip lover

Went for fish and chips at 4.30, they opened at 4 but no food ready. Anyway when they were ready,which didn't take long the portion size was large. Chips nice but batter bit greasy on fish. Will try again though

Why is it that this fish shop can not be consistent? It annoys me that customers are expected to accept food that has been kept warm or not as in my case. I know what you are thinking, if you don't like it then go elsewhere. That is certainly what I will do.Another annoying thing is that I was asked three times to repeat my order. Disappointed overall. Need to get there act together.

On a weekend, I sometimes call and order breakfast buns from here and they are always really good. The breakfast buns are tasty and not really greasy, they are good value too. The gentleman who works there is always really friendly.

The fish is always fresh it is always cooked as you go in to order. We have not ever had bad fish and chips from hartburn.hartburn

Good value as they do small portions and OAP also a variety of foods offered. The fish always seems very fresh.

One of those fish and chip shops that you would call into unless you knew that there was a superior one within walking distance! Cannot fault the quality but no better than sound.

My husband loves fish and chips. The chips are such a large portion he now has a small portion. Bit hit and miss sometimes they are great and sometimes not as good.

1st time we have been to this chippy, which is a pity as I would say its better than the others in the local area.

This is a great fish & chip bar & the staff are really nice, always friendly with a ready smile, always a pleasure to visit.

Eaten here plenty of times of the years, never had any issues with the food. Staff friendly, parmo's are quite nice from here but best to ring up & order! Recommended.. Take away only no seating area
