Harpur's Plaice in High Peak

Recently moved to Harpur Hill, everyone has been banging on about how good the chip shop is. Finally tried it, did not disappoint; good price and great food.

Fantastic chippy Called in for first time had meal deal small fish chips peas really generous portion cooked to perfection my wife had fish chips and curry under £12 for the two. Lovely staff .we will be back

Not just a chip shop, tho it is the best for miles around. The opening hours are very generous and ideal for a second breakfast on the way into work. Well worth any minor detour 👍👍👍

Great portions and lovely chips.

Phoned early as we wanted a big order for a certain time. Got there at the time, only to wait another 20 minutes before it was ready. Whilst waiting quite a few people came in and ordered, got there order and left. There was no organisation, I think that was because they did not have trained staff. They all seemed young, not that it is a problem usually. Won't be going back.

I go to this chippy quite often and the food is cheap and cheerful. Although you pay slightly more than any other chip shops, It's worth it because ou get alot of food e.g a small portion here is a large portion elsewhere. It's a decent little chip shop.

Long wait to place order, had to ask if I could order, staff busy doing not much the young lady frying busy chatting to a girl (looked like her sister) who although entering after me placed her order minutes before me. After placing my order just before payment informed no haddock left so had to have cod. Would you like salt and vinegar , yes please my reply. After being in there 15 mins only 2 customers served I left with my order. On arriving home and opening the containers the S&V must have been shaken from the other side of shop, fish and batter soaking in grease (3 napkins to soak up) an batter not 100% cooked and steak and kidney pudding apart from 2 pieces of kidney was all gravy or something similar. Last year visited and was not impressed but gave it a 2nd chance but alas will not be 3rd

I like this chip shop and it is a very popular centre of the local community. The service is friendly and my order was taken by phone and was ready when I arrived to collect it. The large portion of chips were enough for the three of us but we do not have large appetites. The only fish on offer was cod which is not my usual preference but it was a good chunky portion and well cooked. My only complaint is that the batter is too thick. The outside of the fish was a delightful golden crispy brown but when you cut into it, the layer next to the fish is a glutinous semi-liquid. Such a shame. I stopped visiting this shop for that reason and when I returned after a gap of a few years it was so disappointing to find that this one fault was still there. Please have a think about your batter recipe. Such a lovely shop otherwise.

Large portions of great chips etc. Friendly, many regular customers, lovely staff. Usually busy, but it has a very quick turnaround of customers.

Apart from feeling I was being ignored I was able to place my order, fish cake and chips. To be honest after getting the food back home and opening to eat, the chips had a funny smell like old oil and the actual home made fish cake looked good but consisted of in cooked potatoes and odd bits of fish. Very disappointing, most of the food was thrown away. We had got take away from them before but perhaps our memory of the quality had been forgotten. We will not use them again.

We had a fish supper . A bit of a wait and the fish in a thick batter . Good prices but not for us .

Visited them this evening (17/8/23) around 19:30. Google showed good reviews so decided to visit. Friendly staff, huge portions but sadly fish and chips were cooked in the old oil. Which is not what we were expecting having travelled 3 hours from London. I understand they were closing in 30 minutes but we did not enjoy the fish and chips. Please sort it out, your priority should be clean cooking oil.

Amazing chippy!Two ladies, Syd and Lisa were very busy but did a great job making sure a very busy chippy was running smoothly. The food was fantastic to feed a family of 8, good portion sizes, unbeaten on price and a brilliant service. Well done ladies, if every business was run as well as that then there would be no issues in the food industry!

Great fish and chips - got a takeaway, was a little delayed when picking up but not by much! Very affordable!

Chips ok but was closer to french fries size rather than proper chips, sausages looked albino, fish had no flavour or flakey texture and just seemed a solid mass and on the small side with the batter soggy with no flavour too. Probably not use again having spent nearly £30 for well below average chippy dinner.

Chips tasted like they were 2 days old. I could not eat them. Really disappointing 😕

I have the pleasure of writing this review at 1245am having been woken up to the horrors of FOOD POISONING… just waiting to see if it hits the whole family. To add to this already dire situation the food was utter rubbish, by far the worst fish and chips we have ever had. Chips over cooked and dark from dirty oil and the fish was disgusting- oozing grease. Curry sauce you could cut with a knife it was so lumpy.

Very hit and miss this chippy. Sometimes the chips are nice, sometimes they are awful. Tonight they were obviously re-heated, re-cooked ones from yesterday and absolutely awful. Maybe cook fresh chips for your customers? The cost is still the same! Fish is also very hit and miss, this evening the batter was incredibly thick and chewy, not nice at all. Not sure if we will go again, very disappointing. Cook fresh stuff for your customers! Potatoes are not expensive.

Nice quality fish, good portion size as we shared it, value for money

Me and my Husband have Just had Fish and Chips seeing as it's Valentine's day we thought we would have a treat what a big disappointment it was the Chips were over cooked and the fish on the Batter was very hard needles to say we eat them

Fish was perfect, all order was hot n well wrapped, Not been here for a while with Covid etc but the standard and cleanliness are first class, will defo b our regular "plaice" again . Highly recommend.

Fantastic chippy definatley Buxtons finest!

Visited on a busy Friday evening. I ordered 2 large fish, 2 large portions of chips and curry sauce. I received my order promptly, but on arriving home, discovered that one of the fish was missing. I rang up and the staff were apologetic and I drove back and they had the fish ready to collect. Positives…the chips were plentiful and delicious, and both types of curry sauce were very tasty. Negatives….the batter on the fish was thick and claggy the fish inside was small considering the huge amount of batter. I would visit again, but I would not go for the fish!

Always good food that is priced very competitively….it even works out cheaper than other chippy’s despite the cost of fuel to get up here! 🤣

This is a great chippie, chips are probably the best I've had, proper mushy peas, crispy batter on the fish......what's not to like. Great service too.

Called today only to find them closed wit a note on door saying. Closed because of the heat. Aren't you bothering opening every time it's hot.Perhaps you could say a temperature so we know not to bother coming

Waiting 7 minute for fish to be cooked haddock it was a triangle shaped got it smashed the batter up and still runny turned my blue fork white complained got money back chips n curry was as bad

Food is very good, eaten here twice now and food hasn't failed to deliver, will visit whenever I'm back in this area

I am not one for writing reviews but it has to said their chicken nuggets with a spicy curry sauce is a taste sensation. Very friendly staff I will definitely be going there again.

The queue was quite long at the Fish and chip shop when I arrived. Having ordered and paid I was asked to join the other people outside of the shop, until my order was completed. All together it took 20mins from start to finish. The chips were lovely, the Cod was very thick and long, with very crispy batter. The price was very reasonable.

I've not been in here for many years (since I used to be a field engineer in the region). Popped in today while driving across the hills - We had two of the fish specials (small fish, chips and peas). A cracking lunch - lovely freshly cooked fish with a crisp batter, very nice chips - some of the best I've had, and proper mushy peas. What's not to like !! I ate every single scrap, that's how good the quality was and how good it tasted. We were so glad we stopped by and both said we'll be sure to come back another time.

Not only did they nearly give me fish chips and beans they didn’t give me the fish 😂 just got chips and peas. Would of drove back but at a campsite 15 mins away only went there because of the good reviews will choose elsewhere next time!!

Looks like I hit them on a off day looking at other reviews, chips were like hard bullets probably all the bits from the bottom of the pan, batter on fish very greasy on a positive note the salt and vinegar was very nice

Visited whilst on holiday near Buxton. The fish was cooked perfectly with no bones, chips were delicious and the portions were big without being silly. My husband’s vegetarian and usually has to make do with a sorry, squashed veggie burger at the chippy but not here! He said it was the best veggie burger he’s ever had, with proper chunks of veg and seeds, really tasty and delicious. Definitely recommend.

We visited harpur plaice recently and we were very disappointed at the standard of food. The chips were clearly cooked in old oil and the fish was disgusting. The slither of actual fish was chewy and inedible coated in the darkest hardest batter we’ve ever eaten. 25 quid in the bin.

Fish and chips are consistently good... But it has to be the onions in vinegar on the side that make it 5 stars for me

Lovely people, great food which is reasonably priced

After a very long day shopping we were going straight home to cook but just couldn't be bothered, and as the chippy isn't too far away and we pass it, we decided on getting our tea from here.because of the earlier time we visited it was very busy with a good queue but the service form all the young ladies was fast and efficient. We opted for our usual as we were very hungry, and so had two large cod in batter (absolutely beautiful), large chips (as you get plenty which caters for us both), two peas and gravy. We got the fodd home and as per the norm it was still piping hot and have to say it never touched the sides. you get plenty and it is great quality. The chips used to be lovely but quite anemic (in a nice way), like they could have just had a couple more minutes in the fryer (just personal preference), and although a bit better this time they still could just do with a little longer cooking to make them a bit more golden.

Called in at 5 minutes to closing time today and it was no trouble to accommodate our order. Didn't have to wait long for our food and it was all cooked well. We thoroughly enjoyed the food we had ordered and the staff were attentive and friendly. Highly recommended!

Great little takeaway in Harpur Hill just outside Buxton. Apart from fish and chips it offers a breakfast bap menu. Happy staff, fast, decent food. Great way to wrap up a day's walk. I also note their gravy is suitable for vegetarians.

With the wife having had a really tough week at work, and particularly that day, we decided to go for a treat and have our usual fish - chips - mushy peas and gravy. We were lucky when we got there as there was no queue. We had two large cod in batter which were absolutely beautiful. the peas and gravy were very good too, but the chips just need longer in the fryer to give them a bit of crispness and colour. Other than that it is great. the quantity and value for money is excellent - it's just the chips need cooking a bit longer (but they taste very nice, don't get me wrong).NB: It doesn't look great when a member of staff stands playing on their mobile whilst we are waiting - just my opinion. It doesn't look professional.

Arrived at 5.45 for 2 Cod and chips. The cod was cooked fresh and was fine. Unfortunately the chips had been sitting for a long time and wrre dried out. By the time were had driven one mile back to our accomodation they were cold.

Walked in with a large order after struggling to find somewhere to eat (Mother's day weekend). Really fast and friendly service, great portions and great quality. We're only in the area for a long weekend otherwise we'd be back. Highly recommended.
