Good Food Great Staff & Dog Friendly Ok I always now wait till I have a few times to a place before I review especially one that serves foodI have worked in the hospitality trade as a licensee and am very fussy where food staff manners and cleanliness is involved so here is my honest opinion of The Half Moon Preston Paignton…. The Half Moon in Paignton did have a bad reputation but I believe it was in April that it was taken over and new management put in since then the place has blossomed and they are trying to build up the reputation so here is my review….Our first visit 3rd July it was by chance just my husband and I we popped in and decided to try the food. When we walked in it was quiet but the greeting we received was lovely smiles and welcoming such a change. The inside was spacious and clean nice décor and we noticed that there was a dog sat with a family at a table, when I asked the lovely lady said dog were welcome which made us smile as we have a lab (Duke) after ordering we sat outside in the beer garden as it was a lovely day.My husband had the ploughman’s and I had the burger when it came out I have to say was very impressed potions were good and it tasted lovely. We could not ask for better service. The second visit was on the 20th August with my cousin and her three boys aged 10 months. 5yrs, and 10yrs old and my cousins mother in-law. Again the welcome was warm friendly and we had starters which garlic mushrooms, and prawn cocktails all superb, mains consisted of Nachos, fish and chips, Steak and Kidney pudding, and cheese and potato pie have to say it was all superb hot well cooked and not swimming in grease Although the Steak and Kidney pudding was huge me and Jan (mother-in-law ) were beaten by this monster lol it was packed with tender kidney and steak,.The portions are a good size so beware unless you have a huge huge appetite having a starter, main and pudding may beat you lol. We did manage pudding Alabama choc cake again lovely. We had drinks as well and have to say to be fair it was good value. Ok third visit was on 30th August it was my dogs 2nd birthday (Duke).Hubby is working away and my friend and I decided to pop in for lunch with my friend Amanda and take Duke to see how we would behave as first time he has been inside somewhere like this. We walked in and once again the welcome was fab Duke had a fuss and we sat down and the lovely lady brought over a water bowl.We decided on carvery, one pork and one beef, my goodness I was bowled over... Now you know when you have been put off before you go somewhere the meat is like chewing shoe leather, the veg is either undercooked or so over cooked that it’s mushy and the potatoes are like rocks and the gravy swims with fat?? WELL NOT HERE the meat was tender and tasty the roast potatoes were lovely, and the veg was just perfect the gravy was great too and the yorkshire pud was nice and light... they also put extra gravy in little jugs  We went for the £6-95 carvery (there is a £4-95) I have to say the amount you get is WOW huge we also managed pudding  Alabama choc cake and I had another that was nutty with ice-cream. Ok so let’s look at the pros….. Parking ample and beer garden nice and spacious inside. Great staff even greater food good prices its clean and dog friendly and the welcome is warm they go out of their way to ensure your happy and I know if you asked for something they would try their best to accommodate you.I think this an ideal place for all age ranges and great for big families to get together. The cons… none they are working hard on building a good reputation and I know have plans in pipeline to refurbish and I think extend the beer garden with a small play area for the children. So if you’re looking for a good place to eat with a relaxed atmosphere this is the place especially if you have a dog as the beach is only 5 minute walk down the road. Also great for the elderly as they have a ramp at front and with parking ample it makes for easy access.

It was nice to be greeted with such warmth upon entering this establishment at the tail end of the bank holiday weekend. It was bright and open, with a lovely range of cask ales and a good choice of food, ranging from old skool prawn cocktail to a Tex-Mex selection. We decided to go for a carvery, which at £6.95, is a very good shout. The food was hot and extremely tasty, with an excellent gravy on hand. The potatoes were perfect, which I can find can be rubbish at other carveries. The meat was very succulent and tasty too. All washed down with a couple of pints of Doom Bar.The only thing that let this place down was the toilets, which need to be seriously looked at, as they were pretty bad. There was water on the floor and floor in the cubicle wasnt very nice, which is a shame as everything else was grand.

Every now and again my husband takes me out for Sunday Lunch, Living in Torquay we have a lot of places to chose from today we went to the Half Moon Inn, It's a large room but only four tables where being used, we didn't have to wait at the bar look for a seat or wait in a queue for lunch, I had the beef which was so tough I couldn't cut it with the knife let alone chew it, the roast potatoes tasted like they had been cooked a couple of times before, the yorkshire pudding was so hard it cut the roof of my mouth, and the rest of the vegetables where tasteless, the whole meal was cold, at £6.95 each I realise we are not paying a fortune but for the same price I've had much better meals than this, even my husband who normally clears his plate left the roast and vegetables, I will not be returning to the Half Moon Inn and I won't recommend anyone else to go there.

The Half Moon has had several changes of management over the last couple of years, going from a very busy restaurant where you needed to book if you wanted a carvery on a Sunday to having the whole place to yourself with only adequate food HOWEVER, my husband and I went there today and found that there had been another change of management, the place has been redecorated and the carvery was EXCELLENT! The restaurant was clean and simply decorated and the carvery consisted of pork, beef and homemade steak and ale pie. There was stuffing filled Yorkshire puddings, carrots, cabbage, peas, sprouts, swede, boiled potatoes in their jackets as well as roast potatoes. As if that wasn't enough, the cost of the carvery meal is £5 or £5.95 on Sundays. £5! Someone there who didn't want the carvery ordered something off the menu, I don't exactly know what it was but the chef brought out a generously sized portion of chips so it doesn't look as if they scrimp on the food. There's even going to be a Mother's Day four course meal for £10.99 which also sounds good value. I really hope that the standard will be kept up as my husband and I will definitely be going back again soon. I would urge anyone who has read the bad reviews to think again because the new management have only been there for two weeks and are a vast improvement on what has gone before and it would be a shame if the restaurant closed again because of lack of customers. It may get busier as the weather gets warmer and as there is a garden with tables it's a nice place to enjoy a meal and with its large car park it's an ideal place for a meal.

Popped into the Half Moon on Sunday afternoon for a quick drink. Unfortunately due to flooding of the Somerset Levels (this is where their brewery is) they had little in the way of alcohol, only cans and white wine. We noticed the carvery and decided to eat. The portions were very generous and in no way could I say I did not have enough. Overall a nice meal just a pity about the drink supplies which is out of their control. I will be back.

The pub was almost empty when we entered - in retrospect not a good sign. I asked for a glass of red wine for my wife and was told that someone would pop down to the supermarket to get a bottle , which we saw them do. I then asked for half a pint of a good dark beer, preferably locally brewed and was told that the only beer they had was a can of John Smith's but I could have lager if I liked. Rather against our better judgement we stayed for the carvery which turned out better than the non-existent wine/beer but only just. The veg was tasteless ( very overcooked ) and the meat rather fat. We will not be back.

We both orderd cottage pie . It came quick but it was microwaved and luke warm, the vegetables were over cooked and soft. Went in for a cooked breakfast with my wife ( shocked she suggested it,as fry-ups aren't her thing! ) recently. As is well advertised on here and locally, the Half Moon is under new management, so feel it is only fair the give the new owners a fair go. Yes the pub was lacking in customers when we visited, however it has a large eating area, and in all the years I've been in I've never seen it anywhere near full. The new owner and staff were polite and enquiring - they're aiming to put on more live music - not sure it will be of the ilk of The Damned, Marky Ramone, The Misfits, Bad Manners or The Beat who played here ten years ago, but we can live in hope!Anyway, back to the breakfast - food was of a reasonable standard £4.25 for a full ( average sized ) English, or £6.25 for double the amount of food. I would implore locals to give the Half Moon a try, after all we all seem to complain when a local pub closes at the expense of a chain.

I had my 50th Birthday party at the half moon, and I couldn't have hoped for a better venue for a family orientated event. There is ample parking, and the pub itself is really big, so even though we only had about 25% of the place set aside for my party, there was enough room for 50-60 guests, a DJ, a MASSIVE buffet (so much food that the chef and landlord had problems fitting it on the tables, and everyone had masses to eat),and yet we still had plenty left over at the end of the evening! and we had a dance floor (not to mention the electronic pig racing game as well!!!)Mike and his team were courteous, friendly and helpful throughout the evening and everything went according to plan. If you are looking to have a private party with good food, plenty of space, a good atmosphere and a family friendly environment look no further,PS: I've been in here plenty of other times for food.carvery too and have never been disappointed.

The bar staff were friendly and the lady serving the carvery was too. There were other gentleman milling around behind the carvery who were miserable looking and didn't speak or acknowledge the customers. The food was very disappointing, the pork was chewy and very pink, the turkey was tough, the vegetables tasted bland and you weren't quite sure if you were eating broccoli or cauliflower. All the veg was lukewarm and watery and tasted pre-frozen. The roast potatoes were soaked in oil and were also tasteless. Went there for lunch a couple of days ago with low expectations due to the reviews but prepared to give them a chance. We had been there about three years ago when it was very busy and the food was good but something had happened with a new owner that stopped us going and now it seems there is another set of new owners. It was around 1.20pm and the boards outside spoke of the carvery and FREE salad bar but if there was one it wasn't obvious and didn't get pointed out when ordering the carvery meals so we went without so maybe it's only available in the evenings. There was a choice of two meats, beef and pork and several vegetables and the food was quite warm but not "piping" but not stone cold. It was "acceptable" but not outstanding but not bad enough to say that we wouldn't be going back. There were about 20 people there so plenty of empty tables. The gentleman who served us wasn't what you would call the most friendly of hosts but the lady chef was more friendly. A younger woman came over during the meal to make sure we were happy with the food. A bit of work needs to be done on the the restaurant being more welcoming. As there was a poster up with various events going on in the evening maybe that's a better time to go to get a better atmosphere.

We should have realised that it was not up to much when we saw how empty the pub was. We decided to give the carvery a try. The meat was not too bad, but the vegetables were disgusting, they were over cooked and sitting in water, as well as being cold, and tastless, I think they had been out keeping warm for a very long time. None of the dishes on the hot plate had lid's on to help keep them hot. We were not a late lunch time customer, it was 12.30, I feel sorry for people coming in for a late lunch. Her food hygiene skills were terrible, she slid a joint of beef off her chopping board into a pork joint and on the counter and just joked about it, I'd even prefer to eat a McDonalds than the garbage served in this establishment, the food on the carvery was a combination of uncooked carrots and overcooked mush that was supposed to be broccoli and cauliflower. If you want poor quali food and rude staff feel free to visit the Half Moon in paignton

As a local resident and fellow publican i was shocked that an establishment like this could be so blaze about what we experienced. We thought that we would try somewhere new for mothers day this year and decided on the half moon as we had not been there before and it recently changed hands. Also when we enquired about what they had on for the day we felt that the landlady was helpful and accomodating, hence we booked a table for the evening! The evening started off well, good starter, then came the carvery, good carvery, not the best and not the worst, meat was lovely and there was plenty if it but all of the potatoes and vegetables were frozen ones so fairly bland, my mum however found herself muching on a piece of scourer from the kitchen. We quietly told the landlady who after about 10minutes came to see my mother and apologise and offered her a free drink. This was OK, she shoud really have offered to replace my mums almost full plate of food or give back the cost of the carvery, but at least she offered something. The excuse was that they use stainless steel scourers and once worn they get caught on the utensils well if this is the case then you would think that they would have removed the utensils and the food that the utensils had been used for to save the risk that there may be more bits of scourer elsewhere, but no it all stayed there as they served other customers carvery from the same dishes using the same utensils. We thought we would try the dessert but it was awful i had something that resembled a chocolate mousse and my mother had something that was like fudge cake that had been out since lunchtime service. Very Poor. Needless to say that we did not finish it. Then there is the bar staff no asking if we had a nice evening or if we were happy with the food, he also went from serving alcohol on the bar to clearing tables to serving on the carvery without washing his hands once, very very shoddy. Something that i would not stand for, it takes minutes to wash your hands, he was like a walking advert for cross contamination!!! I can gaurantee that if we were environmental health watching that we would have had grounds to shut down service. So all in all - AWFUL!!! If you are looking for a bad atmosphere, poor quality food (minus meat to be fair to them) and the possiblity of catching something then this is the place for you. You decide!

Perhaps it is better in high season, but when I went it was a massive mostly empty room, and the carvery was suffering from the slow throughput of customers. I think it has changed management since, so perhaps it is better now.

Had a great time here on the friday before christmas (22nd Dec). We were stuck for somewhere to eat and running late so were glad to find somewhere still serving! Staff were courteous (Service was a little slow, but was busy on food so excusable!) Family all had carvery which was excellent value and very well presented and served. Atmosphere was nice too and a genuine family pub!We were fortunate that our meal was timed to catch a local Karaoke DJ who was utterly amazing, very funny and open to all requests, the icing on the cake for an excellent evening. Well recommended!

Have been here a few times and Everytime I think you get good enough food for a good price. We paid £4.95 for a carvery and £3.95 for children. Choice of pork or/and beef, roast potatoes, carrots, cabbage, mashed swede etc. refillable drinks so great for kids and the deserts are £2 nod we had homemade apple crumble and custard. Can't complain for the price, the food was piping hit and fresh. Lovely service, would go back again

My partner and I were very hungry on Sunday evening. Leaving our motorcycle in the large free car park we went into the Half Moon to try a meal. The place was spacious, warm, welcoming and we were greeted by a very friendly fermale member of staff, found a table and given a menu. From the carvery I chose roast Turkey and my vegetarian partner chose just the vegetables. The Turkey was as good as turkey gets and the large choice of vegetables were all fresh, moist and delicious. An assistant even brought to the table a boat of vegetarian gravy for my partner without even being asked. The beer shandy was also excellent. The whole experience was good and top value for money. We will certainly be going again as soon as possible Several other people were enjoying their meals as much as us and there was a steady trickle of people arriving all the time. If you want warmth, good food, good service and good value then toddle along to the Half Moon for a treat. Remember "A loving person lives in a loving world. A hostile person lives in a hostile world. Everyone you meet is your mirror." Ken Keys.

excellent real ale well kept 5 stars for the ale,, the food although not expensive was not up to the normal standards of this sort of pub [although they do get busy at times] my suggestion to the owners would be go down the rout of one price set carvery with a choice of 3/4 meats and Fresh vegetables

I have been to the Half Moon 3 times recently, twice had the carvery and once the buffet..The first carvery was ok (the turkey was lovely but the beef a bit watery) The second carvery was very enjoyable except the carrots were cold. Both times I was charged £4.95, good value for money. When I had the buffet it was celebrating my birthday, so was with friends. It was good value for money £6.95, the soup and salad bar were excellent, plus a good choce of mains. I particularly enjoyed the sweet and sour, the other dishes I sampled were not particularly interesting. We were offered desserts at only £2 each, or a special Baileys dessert at just over £3. One of my friends ordered the Baileys dessert only to be told they had run out of it, so she had ice cream instead, and the owner lady poured a measure of Baileys over the ice cream to make up for my friends disappointment. I had chocolate fudge cake with ice cream and was told it was on the house because it was my birthday!!The half moon is well positioned on the main Paignton -Torquay road, with a large car park and bus stops nearby.

We visited twice over the May Bank Holiday weekend, once for a drink in the daytime and once early evening for a meal.Though rather empty at the time we found the atmosphere very relaxing on both occasions, the place was very clean and the staff (particularly the landlady) were very polite with good social skills. The beer was very good and well kept. Our salad and buffet meal was delicious and excellent value for money. We will definately return and would recommend.

Went there last Thursday 3rd May 2012.The owner first of all gave me a glass with what appeared to have a crack in it. I asked her to change it - I then had lengthy explanation it wasn't a crack it was a scratch! Had a carvery! It was disgusting! The carrots were off! The beef was like leather and the veg was bland. It was also tepid. The guy who seved us had no personality - it was too much trouble for him. Ordered 3 coffees only 2 came, but had paid for 3! When the coffees came they were in the saucer and do weak you couldn't taste the coffee. I complained about the meal to the woman/owner and told her carrots were off and all she said was "oh" I'll tell chef. There was no offer of can I get you somthing else instead!I didn't bother having a desert. They didn't have what they were advertising anyway!Overall, the food is disgusting and the staff/owners are useless. Would not ever go again or recommend any one to go.

My wife and I visited this pub midweek and had the carvery. The pub had tables for more than 100 people but we were the only people there. This should have been a clue. The food was very basic - reminded us of what you would get at a freezer shop. Unsurprisingly there was no atmosphere. On the plus side the meals were inexpensive but we will not be returning.

Has the potential to be a lovely, well run, family pub. We walked in the other day, because there was a big "UNder New Management" sign up outside. Only to be greeted with the same miserable management and staff ... There were two other people in the whole place. The carvery was dried up, only three or four things off of the limited were available, and their card machine was broken. We didn't even stay for a drink. Badly managed, lack of care, lack of concern to get things right. We won't be visiting again. Plenty other family venues with much better service and standards, very nearby.

My husband and I have been quite regular diners at the Half Moon for a few years. At one time the food there used to be fantastic with a great choice and good value. However, our visit there on the afternoon of Boxing Day 2011 will definitely be our last. We'd been on a Boxing Day shopping trip and decided to eat out before we got home. On arrival, the place was empty except for 2 private parties. I asked the barman for an ordinary white coffee, which by the time I'd added 3 mini-tubs of UHT milk was so lukewarm I had to knock it back in one. We'd paid £9.95 each for a 3-course meal, as I didn't know if I'd want a sweet or not and wanted to leave my options open. My husband had the soup, and immediately had to take it back to be re-heated as it was cold. When I went for my carvery I asked for beef and pork, and the barman could hardly bear to put any meat on my plate. He was very surly, which made me feel most unwelcome. The vegetables were sitting in a bain marie swimming in water and were nearly cold. Within 5 mins of starting to eat, everything was stone cold. I forced my dinner down as I didn't want to totally waste a tenner, but it was all so unappetising I'd lost my appetite. I gloomily followed my husband over to the dessert chiller and surveyed the plastic pots of synthetic jelly, the whips, the cold apple pie and the chocolate fudge cake, all sitting there forlornly, covered with cling film. There was no cream, just 3 tubs of ice-cream, and by then I wanted something to warm me up, having just eaten a cold dinner. I decided to forgo dessert. By then I felt so depressed and angry I couldn't wait to get out of there.I nearly burst into ironic laughter when the barman came to take our plates away and asked me 'How was your meal?'I replied: 'I really wouldn't like to say.'He unwisely entered shark-infested waters by asking 'Why?'So I merely answered: 'The whole meal was cold.'Upon which he took the plates and walked off without another word. The final straw was on leaving; we had come from a brightly-lit bar into an unlit porch with a flight of steps outside. I was momentarily blinded and had to wait a second for my eyes to adjust to the gloom. If I had slipped and grabbed for the hand-rail I would certainly have lost my balance and fallen, as the hand-rail was very loose and wobbled about 4 - 5" to either side. I feel it was an accident waiting to happen. To sum up, the Half Moon has not so much gone downhill as plummeted into the abyss. A miserable barman, who so obviously didn't want to be there; the lack of welcome; the stingy portions of meat and the cold vegetables, and finally the dangerous, unlit steps made this an experience never to be repeated. I remarked to my husband at the time that I wouldn't take a pig there for swill!

Was very busy with only 1 person on bar duty and 1 behind carvery, so there were queues. The only free table was very near the carvery queue, so had people standing over us. Carvery with 3 meats on offer. Asked if I could have beef and turkey and was told if I wanted 2 meats I could "only have 1 slice of each". This was fine for me and I don't know why it was done so grudgingly. The potatoes tasted like they'd been fried and not roasted and the veg gave the appearance of being bought in/frozen and swimming in water. Having said this it was CHEAP and everything was hot.. All in all If you want to fill up cheaply, this Sunday carvery will do the job, but if you want to enjoy a tasty Sunday roast in pleasant surroundings go elsewhere.

Take time out of your journey to visit this traditional English pub. We went with a party of 10 and had an excellent meal. It was late Sunday afternoon and were out of the pork bellies however the other items were in plenty of supply. I personally recommend the Harpers local brew as it has a smooth taste and goes down easy. The servers are all quite attractive and equally efficient in their tasks. This is one gastropub not to be missed.

We went to the carvery today, & it was lovely. As it wasn't to busy, large amounts of food weren't put out, but was replenished frequently, so was hot and fresh. The owners were lovely, polite & interested in the people there. We had the one plate carvery, and you could have as much veg as you liked. You could also have an 'all you can eat' buffet, which included the salad bar, carvery, soft drinks, puddings for £9.95.I would thoroughly recommend.

If you're looking for fine dining steer clear but if you're looking for a cheap, plentiful, filling meal then you could do a darn sight worse than the Half Moon.Being a bit of a sucker for "Buffet" style dining, we chose this for the last night of our holiday.Plenty of parking around the back with a small garden area outside, this is quite a large pub but on the night we were there everybody was there for the food.At £9:95 for adults & £6:95 for the kids you can't really go wrong. That price includes starters, main courses and sweets. The only real disappointment we had was the salad bar, which hadn't been stocked up and was low on items and wasn't stocked up for another 30 minutes. The choice of food was good 2 x roasts, curry, pie, pasta , chicken and plenty of veggies, potatoes chips etc all hot and plentiful.Desserts ranged from ice cream, whips, chocolate cake and bakewell tart.Maybe a fresh fruit salad wouldn't have gone amiss.Like I said earlier, not gourmet but satisfying and who could complain at £40 for 4 including drinks.

we have been regular visitors to the pub for the last five years , whenever we are down on holiday we regularly have sunday lunch . we feel that this year it was different in particular on sundays ,we used to have to book a table on sundays to get a table for dinner. we noticed in may when visiting the place was half empty we thought credit crunch , but soon found out why , there is new management now and the meals are not as good. ie at one time you could fill the plate with meat ,they now seem to give you only a couple of small slices, also used to get wide variety of potatoes and veg ,not now, people were actively moaning about this when being served . the chef who weve seen there many times before seemed a bit miffed by this ,and was not as pleasant as he used to be. well give it one more go in august if its the same well go elsewhere.its a shame really they are obviously trying to cut back , problem is they will lose there trade ?
