Half Man! Half Burger! in Hastings

Writing up some reviews as waiting on a burger in my local town as another place let me down and whilst waiting and salivating I remembered the best one I ever had was from here about 5-6 years ago, went here from time to time as ex was a vegan and they catered for vegans which was for a burgher joint still a mild oddity then, especially in small coastal towns, she always seemed happy with burgher she got and the beef ones I've had about 3- 4 times in total from this place and I reckon all would make it into my top 10. They are good enough for me to remember that I must return here one day and hope the quality is the same, always rammed which often a good sign, fries and extra toppings if you fancy it are excellent if you can fit them in or are willing to share. Hope this place is doing as well as ever, it seems an independent that deserves to thrive on its quality alone, I don't remember it being expensive for an up market burger joint either. Wish it was not about 60 - 80 miles away.

I am a very big fan of street food especially burgers. Travelling for work my colleague pointed out that we were close by to HMHB and of course thought it would be rude not to come and try. I was certainly not disappointed, although small in appearance the restaurant had a nice vibe and an old school hip hop playlist, which gets a thumbs up from me. For food it was an easy choice, Double Blue from a Bun and Chilli cheese fries. This is easily a top 5 burger for me, really exceptional and extremely tasty and the fries were also superb. Accompanied by a nice crisp pint of Camden Hells, what more could I wish for, service was great and all in all a very good experience. I would highly recommend you visit if you are in the area, you won't be disappointed. 🍔🍟🍻❤️🤤👏

Decent vegan burgers and delicious sides. Super friendly and helpful staff.

An American burger diner is only as good as its milkshakes. If they are proper thick malted shakes, like all good burger diners across America are. It gets my seal of approval, and instantly becomes the best place in town to take the kids b4 or after a trip to the cinema.... Unfortunately this place didn't even bother, apart from that, they have a very poor selection of non alcoholic drinks... their chips are awful soggy over cooked & incredibly overpriced and although the burger is pretty decent it's overcooked, the bacon is burnt to the point of being inedible & the cheese is so small it's hardly noticeable... all these problems make it an over prjced no go zone that's bad value for money.... What a pity, but the bright side is that... there is a much better burger place 100m past the pier by the state park in the downstairs courtyard, they do better burgers & better chips with much larger portions and it's cheaper too.. its a no brainer, go there instead if you want to have a decent burger & chips, and save money too.

I just wanted to warn anyone thinking about ordering food from here through Uber Eats. We love the food at HMHB and the restaurants and staff are great too but their delivery service (Uber Eats) is unreliable and might take your money and leave you with no food. We just got scammed out of £50 by ordering HMHB food via Uber. The driver never turned up and then hung up on us when we called, then blocked our phone number. If anyone from HMHB reads this, please listen to all the reviews on here about the delivery service that you have signed up to and ditch them.

Stopped in here on a day trip. Possibly one of the best burgers we've ever had and the cocktails were phenomenal. The sides are fantastic too. Really friendly staff and great value for money.

10/10. Best place to visit if you’re in Hastings — big up to the chefs for the tastiest burgers in town and to the waiters for the delicious cocktails and vibes. +10pts for the iconic playlist!

Arguably the best burgers between Eastbourne and Rye - or further afield? Thoroughly enjoyed it.

Ordered from here for the first time after hearing good things. As a vegetarian I was very happy with the choice offered and although it needed a quick blast in the air fryer. It tasted amazing - will be back for more. Also amazing was the coleslaw - yummy 😋 Unfortunately the chips were cold and limp and even after an airfryer blast they didn't taste good and I threw them away.

As a local, this place do great burgers. Maybe not as good as when they originally opened and I really miss their chilli burger they use to serve. Not to be confused with the chilli burger which is with chilli con carne! That said it is the only destination for me if I’m eating a burger. Staff always nice, nice environment and a sea view to boot (albeit with the road in the way) Another place that’s great to take the kids!

We're staying at a hotel down the road, came across this place after going for a walk, ordered to collect and it did not disappoint, everything tasted amazing, need a half man, half burger in Basingstoke!

Delivery review - food is great but why on earth do they use ubereats?! Items always missing, being overcharged for items never delivered - utter mess. Very disappointed 😞

Awesome burgers! I tried a new seasonal one and my boyfriend tried a classic option. They were both absolutely delicious. The chipotle sauce is the best thing you could dip your fries in.

The burger was good, nothing mind-blowing and the chips were terrible, I got all the leftovers so small and so cold, especially considering I collected it and it should have been freshly cooked

Very good burgers and chips in a very small restaurant. Fair prices. We tried the cheese burger and it was excellent, especially the meat and the bun. Also the Christmas edition of cole slaw. Crazy name for a salad but it was very good. The beer was in a German pils and lager style from the tap. Very good!

Had a vegan burger from this place, absolutely incredible. Really hit the spot. Very friendly. Fries were nice but the burger was definitely the highlight.

This branch has seriously gone downhill in the last few months. I’ve just had a burger where the patty hadn’t been charred so didn’t have much flavour, there was a third of the amount of gherkin as usual, and the amount of cheese was so small I couldn’t taste it. £11.50 plus delivery charges. I didn’t get fries bc last time I did they were so burnt they were inedible - waste of £4. Surely if they’re orange and the rosemary and salt isn’t sticking to them that should be your clue they’re overcooked. The burger I had before that was pretty tasteless too. So stick to The Yard branch, where the quality is maintained. Sadly UberEats allocates your branch so I’m going to have to collect from now on. HMHB, please sack the lazy cook you have at this branch, your food costs too much to be this much of a letdown.

Love the place Came with my partner as we've seen the amazing review and I must say it totally deserves it. Had an amazing Blues from a bun burger and Lets sticky together burger. The beef is literally melting in the mouth. Great cheese cake as well. Appreciated the staff help on directions and places to eat / visit around the area.

Was only in town for the weekend and nearly missed this gem! Agreed best burger and veggie burger we’ve had, great sticky fries too. Go or you’ll never know

We ordered home delivery and were very impressed by the friendly service (I had to call up to check allergens.) They were able to cater to my no dairy and no gluten needs. The burgers were so delicious that I actually ordered a second one! Only improvement would be that the chips were cold when they arrived (perhaps they could be foil wrapped rather than in cardboard?) Would definitely recommend!

In the area for work. This place is really near my hotel so gave it a go. Wow. 10/10. Best burgers and sides I've had for a meal of this type. Get yourselves there! Unique and distinct flavours which is hard when it comes to burgers. Banging!! I'll be back tomorrow!

Absolutely lovely. placed our order staff friendly had a beer outside. When food was ready, it was brought out to us .highly recommend it.

It was very enjoyable sitting outside on a beautiful sunny evening, food was good, service perhaps a little slow (but we were warned before we ordered) and great atmosphere amongst those sitting at the tables outside.

Bit quite when we went but food and service great

Ordered the chilli and the gonzo. I didn’t quite read the menu so was slightly surprised by the chilli con carne on my burger as I expected just chillies. The menu delivered what it promised but I won’t be back in a rush. The chips were lovely and crispy, and beef patties nice and meaty. Also got the impression that they are catering more for collection and delivery - there aren’t tables inside and we weren’t offered cutlery, but again, I do appreciate that it’s me being overly particular by needing to half my burger to eat properly.

Absolutely, without a shadow of a doubt, the best burgers for Vegetarians and Vegans. Pure enjoyment! 100% recommended. My only wish is for a few branches to open up in London...#hinthint

We love this burger joint, and drop in every time we visit St Leonards. Always love the music and the vibe. Family friendly, and the staff are absolutely lovely. If you like key lime pie and they have it on the menu, grab a slice!

Absolutely love HMHB - I went there fleetingly about 8 years ago, and then spent 3 years trawling up and down the south coast looking for it, between chichester and hastings - all because I hadn't taken a note on their name (and their margaritas didn't help the cause either!). WELL, now I've found them again, I'm reminded the epicness of their original menu. I usually get the chilli cheese fries with one of their awesome non alcoholic beers. All made on the premises, and fresh - tasteful - and plenty filling without a burger I find. Just love this place . Whenever I'm stopping by St Leonards - I always go here.

I have been coming here for years but based on my recent experience at the St Leonards branch I won't return to this venue again. It seems the priority now is Uber eats and online orders rather than dine in. Sat waiting for over an hour to receive my food. When it did arrive it the wrong burger and the fries were burned and unseasoned. Oh and the portions are considerably less than they used to be. I used to barely be able to finish a meal now I leave hungry.

The chomps were burnt and it felt like they used what was left from the bottom of the tray as these were all small hard bits, the cheese burger was also greasy as well and one had a part of the core of the lettuce in it.. very poor and seems to have slipped the standards we used to enjoy

I contacted your Instagram about my Marina visit, but after 3 weeks had no reply. "Have always enjoyed visits but sadly I am losing my fan status...The prices seem to have gone up exponentially (I know a lot of places have but this seemed far fetched). The fries and burgers should come together as it becomes a really expensive meal, with a lot more places offering gourmet burgers now at competitive prices. What disappointed me is that the service was really slow today, the food took ages only for my burger to miss key ingredients which I had to send it back for, with little apology from the staff. There was no coleslaw and my visit at same branch two weeks prior was the same. Our fries were barely fries too and just burnt ends of potato, hardly any actual fries. The restaurant was empty, which at first surprised me but maybe it makes a bit of sense?!" Unfortunately don't think I will be rushing back at all now.

Great Burger, great staff, great drinks! We had three different burgers and cheese fries. All burgers were amazing, and the fries were really delicious with the rosemary. The waiter was a really great guy, taking care of us perfectly. Thank you for the amazing lunch, guys!

Staff very friendly and helpful, alas that is where the positives end... 3 burgers and 2 portions of cheesy chips (admittedly we added the 2nd portion of chips later, after having already waited 45 mins for 3 burgers and 1 portion of chips) took an hour to produce. Spent £40.00 on the food, the chips were both burnt and cold (we had takeaway and walked for 5 minutes to get home before eating) the cheese on them seemed to be parmesan or similar which really isn't the kind of cheese you want melted into your chips. All 3 burgers were dry, cold, overcooked, and flavourless with insanely greasy buns. Would genuinely have enjoyed a McDonalds Double Cheeseburger more and for 1/5 of the price...

Used Uber eats to deliver- they made a mistake and HMHB couldn’t/wouldn’t do anything to sort out the missing item! Disappointing service from a usually excellent business

£30 for two burgers and a portion of fries. Wrong burger(single not double) stone cold. Burnt and cold chips. Over an hour to make. This place used to be decent, honestly probably the worst burger I've ever had. I cannot believe how bad they have become, they used to do hood food here.

Wir waren am 23.03. dort. Sehr leckeres Essen. Die Auswahl ist groß genug. Es gibt auch vegetarische und vegane Gerichte. Der „Slawsome`Slaw“ ist eine Wucht! Hat prima zu meinem „The Gonzo“ gepasst. Das Fleisch auf dem Burger war richtig gut und sehr schmackhaft. Das Brötchen genau passend. Die Bedienungen sind sehr freundlich und aufmerksam gewesen. Das Essen war schnell am Tisch. Es gibt auch spezielle Biere. Das APA hat mir sehr gut geschmeckt. Draußen hat es gestürmt und geregnet. Drinnen gab es lecker Bier und lecker Essen. Was will man mehr? Beim nächsten Trip nach Hastings / St. Leonards werde ich auf jeden Fall wieder dort reinschauen.

Well I had high hopes after a visit to the one in Hastings... which was great! However at the st Leonards one.. Where do I begin? The Burger was sloppy, bun wet, fell apart when I picked u, it was oily and not possible to eat with hands, no plates so has to use a knife and fork on the tray.. Chips were ok but nothing special, I spent 20 mins picking out bits of rosemary from my teeth afterwards. Staff member wasn't very friendly I think they didn't really want to be there.. Three burgers, one portion of chips two beers and a water came to. £50... I spend fortunes on eating out but this i think was too much for the quality of the food we received... Very heavy underground rap music was not what I expected ito have to listen to in a burger joint and was some what unbearable... Unless I'm under duress with gun pointed at me I don't think I want to be a repeat customer. For anyone going there I hope it's better for you...

Food arrived cold, stale and burnt. Called restaurant and the guy didn’t even care the slightest about the issue considering their food is already over priced as well. The person who took my call at 8:44pm tonight needs to understand what customer service is. Really disappointed.

Burger is pretty damn good. However 3 star rating due to the french fries money scam. Burgers are around 11 quid (expensive enough already for a burger) and should come with fries. They charge a ridiculous 3.75 pounds for French fries (which cost about 25p to make) and is a total rip off, no 2 ways about it. Include the fries guys or charge 50p to a pound for them, not try and use them as a money making scam.

Unfortunately waterworks restaurant was shut so we went to this one..well out of 4 of us one burger got forgotten and they gave a vegetarian a normal burger instead of halloumi and one had a massive hair in the fries ...Will not be visiting again ever.

Only ever leave a review if the establishment has ticked all boxes and oh my gosh, the chilli cheese fries are amazing could taste some rosemary salt on them and the burger was cooked exactly how i ordered it. Quite possibly the best burger I've eaten in a long time, shame I'm only working down here for a couple weeks other wise this place would be my go to burger dealer 🔥

It wasn't just a little bit better, it made every burger I've ever eaten, taste like the shitey bubble and squeak burgers you used to get back in the 80's. You still get them in sausage form at bad greasy spoons. I came all the way from Bristol and would travel those long miles again to get another bite of burger heaven. 🍔

I do not usually like burgers and when ever I have one im like meh! It was OK. But I cannot recommend this place enough. I can hand on my heart say this was the best burger I have ever eaten. You will not be disappointed. Every juicy mouthful was tasty and scrumptious. I genuinely cannot wait to go back.

Great place, but I do remember one time when they ran out of burger buns, they asked us to go to co-op and buy some. Wouldn't be so bag of they had at least discounted the food.... But nothing.

We used to just love this place food and service was amazing but please please please can we have proper plates and knives and forks back , stop using cardboard boxes food doesn’t stay hot everything goes soggy and what a waste on the environment with all that cardboard . Such a shame . Fine for a takeaway but not when your sitting inside to eat .

Burgers not as good as they used to be. Service not great. Struggled with ordering burger at same time as drinks. Found it impossible to take dessert order until after we finished eating. Chips are nice, but it is all overpriced.

Great place to eat very warm and friendly staff. Although the beer is a bit expensive. Food great.

Was excited to visit but was left very disappointed with the food and service. Burgers were nothing special but the chips were worse - you could achieve the same result cutting up some maris pipers at home and then frying once only so that they come out soggy! Not up to standard for a restaurant. At least twice fry to achieve a crisp chip. The service was bad too, some burgers in our party had napkins, some didn't. The owner has a strange, awkward demeanour.

We all live abroad now but always try to visit HMHB when we visit UK. This was a long overdue meeting up of close family and friends with kids and grandkids involved.. this was our first visit to the new Hastings venue. The HMHB team seemed genuinely interested in us and the service and food were excellent and made for a great evening. An absolute must visit 👍
