Hakka Seafood Chinese Restaurant in Cambridge

We chose Hakka’s for our wedding anniversary meal, as we wanted something special. We were very pleased with the whole experience. This is a high quality restaurant. Like other high quality restaurants, and in contrast with more mediocre ones, the ingredients are all fresh. This means that the range of what can be ordered depends on what has been bought in. As with other very good restaurants, what makes it first class is the quality of the dishes provided. We had the seafood salt and chilli platter for two to start, the best example of this dish we had ever had. This was followed by two exquisite seafood dishes (one scallop and one prawn), with an egg fried rice that made us realise that even this staple dish can be done better than one is used to.

Though severely hit by the crisis, Hakka Cambridge continues to be the best restaurant in town and one of the best in the United Kingdom. Delicious seafood and fish dishes. Very good quality/price. Enjoy it while it lasts.

We were invited to a unique experience in Cambridge UK - a small, unassuming seafood restaurant. You would never imagine that behind this door, amid simple surroundings, would be such an elegant culinary artist. Our host called and pre-ordered because this is a small restaurant with very high standards. It was like having a persona chef. He went and sourced the seafood personally, a Dorset blue lobster. As we are from Boston, we thought we know lobsters. We were wrong. Cooked to order, with garlic, spring onion, and a certain kind of chili spice, we have never tasted anything like it. My husband is from Sichuan, and *he* was impressed. We were also treated to black cod, again, perfectly textured, and a balancing of all the flavors. We also had green vegetables and rice. The unique thing os the chef/owner is a one-man show. He goes to the fish market on the coast. He cooks. He waits tables himself. He does it all, with aplomb and efficiency. Do not be fooled by the location or the decor. This is extraordinary Chinese seafood cooked by a master. Rush to try this place.

This is my second time eating at Hakka and same as previous the food was perfect. The sizzling beef was a piece of steak, cooked medium rare so it melted in mouth with a tangy home sauce. Likewise the pork belly was just right. But most importantly, the seafood was the star of the show. I ate black cod for the first time here and again this week, it is an incredible fish, rich and unctuous, cooked simply with charred spring onions garlic and ginger the freshness of the fish speaks for itself. Likewise the prawns and lobster were perfect. The work ethic of the restaurateur who is chef, maitre d’ors, and owner is from a different generation. he talked about driving for hours to get the best local sourced fish and knew where all the produce came from. He runs a one man show that no one else could ever pull off. Top marks

Exceptional Chinese Seafood restaurant in Cambridge and in fact the entire UK! Fresh and authentic Asian style seafood and perfect for those who like spicy authentic taste seafood. Nice and friendly chef. Highly recommended! Book in advance to avoid disappointment !

Best Chinese meal we’ve ever had! Don’t be put off by the exterior. The food is exceptional. The proprietor is the cook and waiter. It is like hiring your own personal chef.

We really enjoyed our evening there last friday and we will definitely go again when back in Cambridge next year! The food was fantastic - the best Chinese seafood we have eaten in a long time - superb all cooked from scratch and all very very tasty. Don’t be put off by some of the reviews as it is a one man band , he was very friendly and a great chef - go for it !!

I've been here twice now, and it's some of the very best Chinese food that I've had. I think it's important to realise before coming that this restaurant is genuinely one person running the whole show by themselves, front of house and kitchen and everything else. This is an experience of getting food from one dedicated person that obviously really cares about what they make. It's inevitable that you get some rough edges with a restaurant like this, but that should not put you off at all. The food we had was consistently great, one of the best meals I've had in a long time. The drunken fish in wine sauce and sea-spiced oysters stood out as my favourites. It's great quality and it deserves support, I really recommend it.

It’s my fourth time to Hakka, I still remember the last time that I came here, it was more than 5 years ago! The owner and chef Daniel welcomed my friends and I warmly. Customers have to be patient when they come to Hakka, because they need to understand that it’s an one-man-band business, Daniel is in charge of everything, literally everything, from the front house to the kitchen, and everything in between. I have to say Daniel really pays attention to details, the plates that were placed on our table were always warm, and the food, Mama Mia, what more can I say: fan-tas-tic!! I tried the Seafood Platter that I was so impressed the first and second time at Hakka, and this time, it still is my favourite—the nicely seasoned and fried seafood of best quality, you can still taste the freshness of each ingredient used. With a little bit of spicing, which is slightly spicy, but still manageable for me, just brought the whole dish to another level. The Black Cod and the Coconut Prawns are something that I haven’t tried before, so I really had to thank my friends for suggesting these two dishes; the Coconut Prawns are well-seasoned: a little bit South-East Asian or Thai style to be exact, together with the juicy prawns underneath the thin layer of crisp, it’s a pleasant surprise and a combo that you shouldn’t miss out. As for the Black Cod, to be very honest, I am not a big fan of fish, but this saucing that went with the black cod was so on-point, that you would just want to have at least 1 bowl of rice to go with this dish. The fried greens that Daniel’d suggested was a nice balance after having had the previous strong-flavoured dishes; we had a stir-fried Chinese broccoli in Ginger Sauce. What a refreshing dish it was, and it really could help us move on and get ready again for the next dish. My friends and I chatted and chatted, and drank some nice and hot Chinese tea as we waited for the final dish—I suggested the one dish that I tried during my very first visit here, and that’s Sizzling Scallops served on Hot Plate. It was scrumptious and brings back a lot of my good memories when I first visited Cambridge back in 2016. For those of you who happen to come by Cambridge, I can’t think of a better place for you to have an authentic Chinese meal other than Hakka, it’s a must-try!

We visited this restaurant at the beginning of June for our wedding anniversary , my wife has been looking for a good seafood restaurant and saw the good reviews on Tripadvisor. It was a Monday evening , when we arrived there was one other customer in the restaurant,we were welcomed by Daniel who we later found out was the owner , front of house and chef. My wife had checked earlier in the day when booking the table that they had fresh lobster, it appears to be hard to find a restaurant with fresh lobster in Cambridgeshire/ Bedfordshire borders where we live, Daniel confirmed his lobster was fresh and showed us one to show how fresh they were , he said he travels down to the coast to make sure he gets the best that is on offer.to sell in his restaurant.. Daniel cooked the lobster very simply and it was fantastic, best we eaten and we been fortunate to have visited Asia and many seafood restaurants around the world , we also had the seafood platter which was also great. Daniel stopped us ordering anything else as he did not want us to order to much and said he would cook more if we wanted , I did order later beef green pepper and black bean sauce and again the food was great. Yes the service is slow , but everything is freshly cooked , this is not your standard Chinese restaurant, but if you like good seafood do give this place a try , I am certain you will enjoy it

Only the business owner is there, he cooked for us. Slow service and slow cooking. We were over charged. The bill was 425 pounds for a meal of nine people. Definitely bad experience for us

How did this get Travellers Choice? We called in the afternoon it being a Friday and mindful of the rating thought we would need to book a table. Phone was answered “yeh?”, is that the Hakka? “Yeh”, can I book a table for 2 tonight at 7.00pm, “err yeh” . I was a little thrown by the nonchalant attitude and checked he worked there, err yeh was the reply, you don’t seem sure said I. Anyway we called again at 6pm when it was due to open in the hope of speaking to someone else, but was still same guy. We rocked up at 7pm, outside lights not on, a few tables and chairs stacked about but no tables set for dinner. The “waiter” dropped 2 photocopied menus on the table. It’s not set up for dinner, are you not busy, no he said it’s been like this for years. But is the food good I asked, you have a great Tripadvisor rating, he said it’s okay but it would depend on what you are used to! At this point we left. I have no idea what was going on or how they have the rating they do but I would avoid at all costs

I’m in Cambridge working and by shear luck came across Hakka whilst looking for a place to eat , it is one the best examples I have across for the expression “never judge a book by its cover “ once through the door we received a warm welcome and service was great .On my first visit the food as exceptional, so good my colleague and I returned the following night and allowed the owner , chef and waiter to recommend dishes we had chilli prawn &squid combo, salt & chilli pork both were amongst the best Asian food I personally have ever eaten - I will be returning and bringing friends and family

Best Chinese I've ever had! Asked the owner for seafood recommendation and he offered a seafood platter for my daughter and I. This consisted of black cod, prawns and squid in a light batter with a chilli and garlic sauce, which was to die for!!

The food was ok. Sweet and sour chicken was good but beef in black bean sauce was not so nice- slimy and chewy. Service was incredibly slow considering there were only 3 tables occupants and we were starving when our food came out. The service was poorly co-ordinated with bits and bobs served at different times so we couldn’t have it all together. It also seems like there is one person receiving orders and cooking the food as well and he basically insisted that we should have double rice instead of noodles. Quality of the food was reasonable - perhaps a little bit better than the average take away but far too expensive for the quality. Confusing menu with 100+ dishes to choose from.The place is trying very hard to be a quality authentic place, but the experience and quality is nothing more than average.

Otra cena deslumbrante en Haaka. Hermoso pato crujiente aromático perfectamente cocinado, carne húmeda con un sabor suave, no seco ni mantenido caliente, como suele ser el caso. Magníficos langostinos en el exclusivo Hakka agridulce, como nadie más, vieiras cocidas a la perfección y filete que se derritió en la boca. Vino rosado afrutado que acompañó la comida idealmente. Sin duda, Hakka es el MEJOR restaurante chino en el Reino Unido. He comido en cada restaurante chino estrella / guía Michelin en Londres, y ningún restaurante se acerca. El chef Daniel ofrece una selección premium de mariscos recién capturados, entregando un caleidoscopio de sabores vibrantes. Cada comida en Hakka es una delicia culinaria, y entre todos los exquisitos platos que se ofrecen en el restaurante, recomiendo algunos de mis favoritos: camarones fritos con coco, lubina recién capturada (al vapor y adornada con hojuelas de ajo y cebolletas), a la parrilla Solomillo de ternera hakka y bacalao fresco. Mi favorito absoluto son las alitas de pollo fritas con sal y chile: se fríe a la perfección y se realza con el sabor único de Daniel. Nunca he probado este estilo de alitas de pollo en ningún otro lugar. Gracias a Daniel, como estudiante internacional, puedo disfrutar el sabor del hogar lejos del hogar. Sorprendentemente, escondido en las sencillas afueras de Cambridge, Hakka sirve mariscos aún mejor que los mejores que he probado en Hong Kong. The food and service at Hakka are both amazing, and it's definitely my favorite restaurant in Cambridge! I've been multiple times with friends, and we always enjoy it. The food is always delicious; we especially like the sweet and sour chicken, which is light and not cloyingly sweet and salty like it is at many other restaurants. The duck is also a favorite, as is the ginger and spring onion beef. The owner/chef is always very nice and helpful, and even without other staff the food doesn't take long to come out. Definitely should reserve ahead though!

Prompted by other reviews on Tripadvisor, I visited Hakka last night with my 19-year old son. We are both “foodies”, and have been privileged to eat in some amazing restaurants worldwide. The food at Hakka compares with the best.The restaurant is run by owner-chef, Daniel. Despite the fact that he does everything himself, he is welcoming, attentive, kind, calm and generous. His service is out-done only by his sublime cooking - which is truly exceptional: the freshest ingredients; wonderful flavours; very high quality fish and meat; varying textures; this is Chinese cuisine of the very highest order.The location and outside appearance of the restaurant are unprepossessing, but nobody should be deterred by that. By 8 pm on a Friday, the restaurant was full - with loyal locals, a number of whom were Chinese (who clearly knew where to come for the best Chinese food).We will most definitely eat here again - and would be willing to travel to do so. Los muebles muy básicos están bien compensados por la comida, todo recién cocinado por el tipo que te muestra a tu mesa. Tal vez aproximadamente una milla, desde el corazón de la ciudad y dentro de los límites de la ciudad, en un área secundaria. No es barato pero vale la pena. El propietario cerrará durante un par de meses desde principios de diciembre, para una visita familiar al extranjero, ¡así que sea rápido o sea paciente!

This is one of the few restaurants around the world that I would rate as Superb and exceptional. The food is amazingly scrumptious and the service is super although it's a one man show. The best in this experience is Chef Daniel himself, he is pleasent, funny, and generous... his cooking is exceptional and by far the best I have tasted around the world.

Amazing meal. Mongolian Lamb starter was a hit. Great service- we were advised on our menu selection and offered a not on the menu sqid dish which was superb along with sizzling scallops. Really fresh fish and seafood. The meal deserved more than 10 out of 10. Would strongly reccomend.

If you are looking for a nice Chinese restaurant that is a cut-above the rest then definitely give this a try. Hakka is a great restaurant - the dishes are extremely tasty, well presented, and the chef uses very fresh ingredients. It's a clean, tidy and quite stylish place - quiet too. My wife is Chinese and says the dishes are 'authentic and scrumptious'. The price is reasonable, and the service whenever we have been there (early evening) has been very good too.

Certes l’attente peut être un peu longue (il gère seul son restaurant) mais cela est vite oublié une fois les plats arrivés. Des fruits de mer comme je n’en ai jamais mangés (venus tout droit du marché de Londres). Mon conseil, laissez le vous surprendre, et prenez le “pancake duck”.

If only one could give six stars as this place thoroughly deserves it. Incredible food, excellent quality and wonderful service. Looking forward to our next visit!

This restaurant might not seem like it from the outside but it was some of the best Chinese food I have ever eaten, even better than what I have tried in China itself. Cant recommend it highly enough.

We normally avoid Chinese restaurants due to previous bad experiences of greasy chow mein and other tasteless salty takeaways, However, this unlikely-looking and unassuming restaurant scored so highly in reviews that we decided to try it out. We are so glad we did, as it was stunning. Specialising in seafood dishes, most of the dishes are prepared with fresh fish that the owner himself sources. The food was so tasty, and nothing like our previous experiences. We would particularly recommend the Ahsam king prawns (quite hot), and the salt & chilli fish (both of which we had as starters). Book to avoid disappointment, though.

Heerlijk gegeten, goed advies gekregen en een heel vriendelijke gastheer. Je moet gewoon veel recepten bestellen en met elkaar delen. Echt een aanrader.

We had a wonderful dinner with great food. We can highly recommend the roast pork Cantonese style and duck in Cantonese sauce. The host was brilliant and made sure we were happy during the entire dinner.

20min from Cambridge city center but it was a nice walk though. Chef Chang from Hong Kong runs the business all by himself that’s why you might expect the food to be served a little bit slower, but he offered very reasonable recommendations (and he’s humorous!), and the foods were great, very fresh seafoods- fish and pawns, delicious tofu and vegetable, juicy beef etc. Overall, we had a great time there, will definitely recommend it!

I have been to Varsity. I have been to Midsummer Common. Hakka knocks the spots off both. If you have the confidence to put yourself in the chef’s hands you will have a sublime meal which will reach the parts that other meals cannot reach. Fine dining flavours meats comfort food. A decent wine list with the best sherried single malt this side of Scotland. Treat yourself. Go.

Came on a Saturday evening as visiting Cambridge for our wedding anniversary. We found the Hakka on Tripadvisor and we are so pleased we did. I must have driven past it several times as our son was at nearby Jesus College, but never noticed it - the power of social media .....
