Gurkha's Inn in Winchester

My partner & I visited "Gurkha's Inn" yesterday (Monday May 17th 2021) while on a day trip to Winchester. I have had Nepalese food before so was looking forward to eating at "Gurkha's Inn"... and it did not disappoint! I started off with Aloo Tikki (pan fried spiced potato cakes) (£4.50) which came with very fresh mint dip - and was very spicy - just how I like it & full of flavour, as was the cooling FRESHLY MADE mint dip - an excellent start. The main was Methi Chicken (£9.50) with Lemon Rice (£3.25) and a vegetable side of Aloo Bodi Tama (Bamboo shoots, potatoes & black-eyed beas with fresh tomato) (£3.95) and a small DRAUGHT Cobra - the conversation stopped between my partner & I as we were so taken with the food - good size portions - and the flavours! SUPERB! Normally with Indian food, we cannot finish the dishes and feel bloated. But with this food, we finished everything and yet did not feel bloated ast all. A very good sign. The bill for the two of us (no dessert) was £51.60 - EXCELLENT VALUE!.. and a very friendly welcome and excellent service. That was one of those memorable lunches that will never be forgotten. I have just discovered that there is a branch of "Gurkha's Inn" near Greenwich in London. We will definitely be paying them a visit. If you've never tried Nepalese food before and you like freshly prepared dishes - JUST GO TO "GURKHA'S INN" - you won't be disappointed!

Another great takeaway - the Goan fish curry, Gurkha style lamb both excellent and complimentary poppadoms a nice touch - thank you!!!

Good for dining in and takeaway. Try their authentic Nepali dishes. Reasonable list of vegetarian options.

Absolutely delicious takeaway, the portions sizes were great, and would highly recommend their chicken tikka curries. Also the best mango chutney I’ve ever head. Really friendly phone and delivery service too.

Got a takeaway delivered during 2ng lockdown. Chicken was a bit dry and didn't taste great. Rest of the food was average at best. Didn't meet expectations from other reviews. Wouldnt get again.

This is a restaurant which really cares. The quality of the food is exceptional and one can always rely on something very special. This has been a favourite of ours for a long time and it ranks amongst some of the best of anywhere we have visited. The consistency and quality and wonderful tastes always impress us every time. It is such a pleasure to enjoy the food. I had to write this after the wonderful meal you delivered this evening and am so pleased to do so. We wish you well and every success for the future.

First time ordering - very polite and professional staff on phone and when delivering. Food arrived piping hot within 20 minutes and tasted lovely. Would highly recommend.

The Gurkha is our favourite restaurant in Winch and we’ve eaten out there on NYE for probably the past 5 years. We couldn’t physically be there this year (thanks Tier 4!) so we ordered delivery.It took a little while which we had expected as it’s NYE and we know how amazing the food is, and they told us how long to expect to wait. It was delivered on time and with the biggest friendliest greeting on a night when they must be really stretched and so busy but still had time for a quick chat.The food was AMAZING. Small restaurant that made us feel very welcome, even when we arrived late! The food was delicious and the service was with a great smile on their face. Would certainly return again.

Was the last night of lockdown and I went to get a takeaway. They even rang to tell me they would be closing earlier than normal which is great service. I had the khasi ko ledo, it was beautiful, nice tender lamb. They even stayed open for me to collect. Much appreciated guys. Thank you very much. Will definitely be back

This restaurant only doing takeaway at present. Always an excellent curry. Quick, efficient and friendly service. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend them. Best Curry House in Winchester.

We had a takeaway dinner from Gurkha's Inn on 14 November 2020 - during the second COVID lockdown. Ordering couldn't have been easier. The restaurant phoned back almost immediately after we placed the order to take card payment and delivery was rapid and well-handled.The meal itself was excellent. Papadums were crisp and not at all oily. Vegetable samosas were delicious. the mains, a mix of vegetarian and meat, were spiced to perfection. Overall, neither the food nor the service could be faulted. And there was plenty left over for the next day, so the value-for-money was a hit, too.

Popped in for lunch with a couple of friends, we live nearby but had not tried this restaurant before. Friendly staff and delicious food, we will be returning after lockdown. Very reasonably priced and open for takeaways during lockdown, so maybe sooner.

We had some very tasty food at this restaurant and service was good, quick, efficient and not over bearing.

Took local friends here for dinner this week.Restaurant had a lovely atmosphere, with good covid measures in place.We had a superb variety of starters, followed by freshly cooked curry. (one was made to order as mild curry preferred).Fluffy rice and the best naan I've tasted. Ice cold beers and great house red wine-you can't go wrong!Friendly staff looked after us very well.Thank you for a wonderful evening.

This is our first experience of the Gurkha's Inn and we were definitely not disappointed. We chose to try takeaway and ordered a vegetarian and chicken dish, with some sides and starters. Everything was delicious and to our tasting. It was simple to order and pay over the phone direct with the restaurant and it was delivered within the time frame on a Saturday evening, in a Covid-19 secure manner which is always reassuring. The chilli paneer is the best I've had in years. It will definitely now be our go to takeaway restaurant and we look forward to dining in the restaurant in the future.

On holiday in Winchester for the week, we decided on a takeaway as our last treat before leaving, and what a treat it was too! The food was absolutely superb, so fresh and tasty. I had the lamb shashlik and hubby had the Kathmandu lamb both of which were so tender and flavoursome. Some side dishes we'd never seen on an Indian menu before so we had to experiment a bit, the Asian/Nepalese dishes had to be tried, so we went for a chilli bangoor which was sliced pork, peppers and spring onions and also makai massala which was sweetcorn in a curry sauce - both were a taste sensation!Takeaway was 10% discount, and was ready within 20 minutes of placing order. Restaurant inside was small but cosy and they have all the COVID safe measures in place for those wishing to eat in. Would totally recommend - this goes in as one of our top 5 favourite Indian meals of all time! And that's quite an award.....will definite visit when back in the area.

Three of us ate here last night. This is a small intimate restaurant but still followed the covid rules. We tried different dishes from our normal choice of Indian food. Everything tastes fresh and was piping hot. The waiters were attentive but not in your face. This was a last minute booking decision and we were so glad we did. We are planning to book for a further birthday celebration. Thanks guys. Great night.

We had lunch here today on a recommendation and were not disappointed. The Kathmandu Lamb curry was excellent. As were the Gurkhas revenge curry and the Chicken Balti...The rice dishes were sweet and tasty and the Keema Naan was the best we've ever had. The service was fast and friendly and the restaurant has a 5 star hygiene rating. They currently have screens up to separate the tables and we felt completely relaxed. If you want hot fresh spicy food in Winchester, this is for you.

We have had top quality delivery from here before - their portions are pretty generous and the food travels well. This time we had to order from memory or recommendation as their website was down so we couldn't see a menu but what we had matched what we desired.I'd heartily recommend this restaurant.

Another exceptional meal from the best restaurant in Winchester. After a long week we decided to spoil ourselves with a takeaway and, as per usual, the food did not disappoint. If you are looking for a good curry I wouldn’t bother looking anywhere else.

We enjoyed our meal however unlike most other recent reviews we don't feel our visit warranted 5 stars. It wasn't busy and the service was prompt, polite and efficient . Everything we had to eat was enjoyable with plenty of choice for non meat eaters. Was it a stand out meal - no. Would we recommend it - yes, it was good but it wasn't that memorable.

As an Indian myself, I am often sceptical about reviews of Indian restaurants situated in localities where relatively few Indians live or go out to eat. However, after reading the reviews for this restaurant, my wife and I had a meal this evening. We are both vegetarians, so can only speak of our experience as such. The service was polite, respectful and timely and the food was excellent. May this place continue to enjoy the success they very much deserve.

Genuinely the best Indian I’ve ever had. Super friendly service and food to die for. Really recommend the Momo starter for something different. For mains we had prawn bhuna (best I’ve ever had!), khatmandu lamb with garlic rice (game changer!) and a delicious peshwari naan. Honestly so yummy and reasonable price!

Family trip, big feed, the portions were perfect, big plate of food and fast service. Good selection of food for meat eaters and veggies.

We are holidaying in Winchester and were inspired by the excellent reviews for this restaurant. The takeaway came bang on time and was hot and delicious. We tried the lamb leg curry and the dal makhani, as well as a lamb tikka bhuna and prawn karahi. It was all flavoursome and not at all greasy. Highly recommended.

First time today, and will definitely be back. Catered excellently for a vegan and a gluten free pescatarian. Felt very safe given Covid adjustments too. Great tasting food, beautifully presented.

We looked on here saw the good reviews we were in Winchester for the first time for a weekend away, we have eaten at a lot of Indian restaurants but this was a taste sensation we were a party of 5 and we all loved our dishes and generally all agreed this was the BEST Indian/Nepalese meal we have ever had, the restaurant is not fancy not top end but service is great and prices good... we wanted to stay another night so we could eat out there again !!!

Perfect food as always. There isn’t a better place to buy a take away in Winchester. We usually eat in but with the current restrictions we had a takeaway. We were not disappointed and the food was as good as in eating in. It really is an amazing restaurant and can’t wait to eat there again.

This is the best restaurant. Since lockdown we have ordered only two takeaways, both from the Gurkha's Inn and delivered cheerfully to our home.The food is fresh and first class. Would not get a takeaway from anywhere else. Actually, decided to order from them tonight, looking forward to it already.

First time we have tried them and will certainly go back even though we are base slightly out of town!The gentleman who took our order was so polite and offered us 10% off as we were collecting.We had the lamb jalfresi, the lamb was incredibly tender and the dish was packed with flavour. Also well done on the cleanliness of the restaurant and good social distancing guidelines layed out.

3rd time ordering during lockdown havin moved to Winchester from London, recently. Faultless... Food, service,delivery.. Everything we have ordered has exceeded expectations. I've ordered chicken shashlik (x2) , Dahl makhani(large size now, it's so good) , tiger prawns (v hot and gorgeous), seafood platter(Tandoori salmon is lovely) , Nepalese leg of lamb curry special, naan's lovely, seriously, the veg starter of samoosa and sag aloo, reordered.. It just goes on.. Today is my birthday.. Got a lovely surprise of a big bottle of Nepalese beer Khukuri, in amongst our bags of food and lovely water. Don't miss London one bit!!! The Gurkha's Inn serves the most fantastic food - I particularly enjoyed the Dal Makhani: black lentils braised in a creamy, gingery sauce. Instant comfort food, but with real depth of flavour. At the moment, Winchester is under lockdown because of the coronavirus, but The Gurkha's Inn is staying open for takeaway only. What's particularly nice - even though it's a very gloomy, fearful time at the moment, all the staff seemed incredibly cheerful, and delighted that people were coming in to order. So I got to enjoy good food, and friendly faces.

This is my favourite Nepali/Indian outside of London. The food is consistently great with decent portions and unlike many others enough heat to satisfy our spice loving palate. The staff are warm, friendly and professional. Can recommend Chilli Bangoor and Gurkha's Revenge. Great nan too! Plenty of choice for veggies.

Visited on a friday evening. Service was very slow. Ordered two main dishes, chicken Tikka ,which very tasty and a Lamb shashlick which was almost unedible as meat was very tough and not cooked as per the recipe, leaving us overall disappointd with the meal.

The Pickled Lamb dish was delicious. We arrived on a busy Friday evening without a reservation and they accommodated us well, letting us know clearly that they needed our table for a later reservation. Good service.

We had a wonderful lunch here today. Lovely cosy restaurant and excellent staff. £9.95 lunch menu is a bargain - beautiful and flavoursome. My only regret is I don’t live in the area, as if I did I would be a weekly visitor to this place

Found Ghurkas Inn by chance on a visit to Winchester, easily the best curry I have had for ages. Kathmandu Lamb was superb and the dhal fabulous. Cant recommend highly enough.

This is a cozy small restaurant in the heart of Winchester. The food is very tasty, full of vibrant flavors, but very well balanced. There are many gluten free options. You can tell the ingredients are fresh and high quality. The spices are just right. The dishes are nicely presented with care and artistry. We were hungry and tired and having dinner at this restaurant was an unexpected treat of quality much higher than I expected. The service is good and fast. I will definitely be back. Looking forward to it.

Had a fantastic meal here, if you love curry this is great place to try. I had the Kathmandu lamb, the lamb was so tender and well cooked and the gravy (sauce) was amazing. Will definitely be visiting again and would (I have) recommend to a friend!

Easy to book, tasty food and very polite staff and management.

We were in Winchester and we came across this lovely restaurant it was very busy but they said they could fit the three of us in in about an hour's time we came back and the food and service was lovely my only complaint was that I thought the drinks were very over priced

I went to this small resturant with my family located in Winchester near train station. The welcoming was pleasing. Service was great and the food I had there was amazing. Been to so many Nepalese and Indian resturant but never had such a tasty food. If you come to winchester and are undecided where to go for a lovely meal,it's obviously Gurkhas Inn.

This was the best curry I've ever had. My wife agreed too. I had a Chicken Balti and my wife had a Dhansak. If you want to eat in then you must book a table as it is only a small restaurant.

Absolutely superb. A very different menu - full of flavour. I tried to move away from your traditional Indian fayre and was not disappointed. The pork to start was amazing and the garlic chilli duck was equally pleasing. The restaurant was packed and takeaway trade was roaring. I would high recommend.

Been most of all indian restaurant in major towns in Hampshire, but found Gurkhas Inn one of the best in all that I have dine in the past.

Chose this restaurant because of its rating on TripAdvisor. We were not disappointed as the Nepalese menu provided a nice variation on the usual Indian curry house menu. Food was very tasty . The restaurant was very quiet on a wet mid week evening but they were doing a roaring trade with takeaways.

Lovely food and good service when we came for a family lunch on New Years Eve after the Panto at the Theatre just round the corner. My Goan King Prawns were delightful. Pappadoms sadly were not crisp enough and I guess had been cooked some time earlier. Peshwari Nan and Onion Bahjees were lovely.

We chose to eat here because of the good reviews about the food. The reviews are correct, the food is great. We really enjoyed the dumpling starter and chicken livers. The Goan fish curry was one of the best I've ever had.

Never disappoints. The food is delicious every single time we go and the staff are all an asset with their cheerful and friendly attitude. This was our second New Years Eve spent at the Gurkha Inn and I’m sure we’ll be back next year!

As one of a group of 8 I hadn't been here before but knew it had a good reputation locally.

Staff night out. Only half of the food arrived for one guest. Spoke to the staff, was told it’s on the way. Arrived after the rest of the group had finished. It was the wrong food the was delivered. The order was sent back. Cheeky buggers added it too the bill. It was the worst experience I ever had, never to return. It was a poor display on their part as it was not busy.

Absolute gem of a place! Delicious food and very good service.... Perfect end to a perfect day! Couldn’t fault a thing and obviously we weren’t the only ones who thought like that...a very popular place to eat...it was full of very happy customers. A definite place to visit again when we return to Winchester!

I was visiting Winchester with friends and one of them had heard that this was a good place to eat.

Have passed by the restaurant a few times and just wanted to try it. With friends on a day out, booked early evening, the place was packed. Excellent meal, great service, just very satisfying. Taking the family after panto, cant wait.

This was a great find with a good choice for both vegetarians and meat eaters and when the food came it was delicious. Even better, prices are reasonable. On a Thursday evening it was very busy but the extremely helpful and pleasant staff remember we spoke to soon found us a table. Highly recommended and I would go out of my way to eat here again.

We came here for lunch and really enjoyed it.Two courses for £10 is excellent value for money.I had a lamb dish for starter and the it was excellent not chewy or full of gristle and really spicy.I then had a chicken curry which was delicious and my son had lamb Korma which was the best he has ever had.I shall definitely come again and the service was excellent..

Excellent curry. Need to book in advance. Tasty curry not too spicy. Popodoms, chutney, naans and rice a little expensive but curries good value. Draft cobra beer.

If you’re vegetarian or vegan this is a lovely place! I highly recommend the kidney bean masala- I’ve eaten it many times. Very accommodating and the chaps that own this are so helpful with menu choices and great customer service!

Early supper and it’s already bustling with families, couples, students, workmates. Poppadoms are excellent, lite, not greasy. chicken dumplings were a bit gluttony but the spicy chicken Mafri curry with brown egg fried rice is brilliant. Add Cobra and enjoy!

Visited here on a Saturday evening when staying overnight at nearby Alton. I found this place on TripAdvisor when researching nearby eateries. Having never been to a Nepalese restaurant before, this caught my eye, as did the positive reviews. I called a few days ahead and booked a table, glad I did seeing how busy it was when we got there. I had the lamb momo and chicken tikka shaslick. Both were very tasty as was the Golden Everest beer. Other people in my party were also impressed with the food. I would definitely recommend a visit and wouldn't hesitate in visiting again if I was in the area.

Quick, friendly and delicious food, highly recommend as something for everyone. Naan bread was best ever.

First time in a Gurkha Restaurant had the fixed menu £15.99, two courses. service was good with an attentive waiter. The Sauces with the Poppadom were lush so order an extra one. Got to be traditional goat curry. I had the Shish starter which was hotter than I expected. The fixed menu Mon-Wed comes with wine or a glass of beer. Well worth a visit.

All staff are Nepalese, as is the cuisine. I had roast duck with fenugreek leaves - outstanding. My wife had Nepalese lamb with chick peas.

Just down the road from the train station. I stopped in for lunch after a meeting in Winchester, and before my train trip home. The food and service were excellent. The food was fresh and well prepared and with a good size serving of curry. Very attentive service.

Awful customer service. Table booked for Saturday evening with friends, received a phone call from Gurkha's Inn a few hours before our booking saying we will only have the table for a short time because they have taken a bigger booking and needed the table.
