We visited as a party of 4 on a friday night. The restaurant is small but very clean and we received a friendly welcome. We ordered the dumplings as these were recommended on lots of reviews. We were not disappointed and they were extremely tasty! For main I went with a Dopiaza which was delicious and the meat was cooked perfectly. I also had the keema naan and it was probably the best I have ever tried. The owner was very friendly, gave lots of recommendations for food choices. We will definitely return on our next visit.

I was hungry for something different and the guy who ran the brewpub nearby suggested this place. Been to Mongolia and had the momos there.... And these babies could rival the ones in Ulan Bator. The hot sauce they serve w it with was the max amount of spice I like. The staff was friendly, the seating comfortable, and the prices reasonable. They prefer ca$h, but will take a debit card.

We visited late on a Tuesday evening, both of us a bit hungry on our way back from a day out but not wanting to wait until we got home to eat bad snacks late at night. I had noticed this place over the last 20 years or so on a not very exciting patch on the Brighton Road between Croydon and Purley and remembered how good Nepalese food is from time spent at Gurkha Kitchen in Reigate during my much younger years. We were not disappointed. Friendly service and good flavours, we had lemon rice and roti with Chicken Aishwarya and Salmon Jeera. We ate the whole thing, no complaints, and well-priced. A group of men came in as we were leaving at 11pm. Obviously a local secret but such a shame this place isn't further up the road and in South Croydon, where I'm sure it would make a killing.

The place is small but cosy. (Seats 38). It is a family run restaurant. From the owner, to the wait staff and to the chef and kitchen staff. The friendliness of the entire staff is unlike any other establishment I have been in. Service is good. The food took a little longer than the norm to get to us as it was freshly cooked, but. It was definitely worth the wait. The flavors were excellent. Everything was very very good. The portions were also very large. Every other restaurant served 8 momo’s. This place served 12 momo’s on the plate. My sister had chowmein and I’m posting a picture of it. It was enough for 2 people. All of us had enough for another meal left over we had to take in a doggy bag. I would seriously recommend this place for anyone who wants authentic Nepalese food. Kudos to the family that own and run this place.

We fancied trying a Gurkha restaurant after enjoying a great meal at a similar restaurant in Hastings recently. This did not disappoint. The outside was very unassuming and not particularly attractive to prospective diners. We arrived at about 7.30pm and it was completely empty. It suited us as we had our infant granddaughter with us. The meal tasted wonderful and there was plenty of it - my daughter and I particularly enjoyed the lemon rice and peshwari naan bread which accompanied our chicken korma. My husband really enjoyed his lamb cooked Gurkha style. With soft drinks our bill came to a very reasonable £42 for the three of us. We'll definitely make a return trip

We had some very nice meals in this restaurant which is easy to find and it is not a problem to park your car in front of them if you go for dinner, On a plus side, our orders arrived as required pretty promptly and all of them were quite good. The only downside were papadums with some strange taste.

I pre-ordered dinner around 5pm for delivery when the restaurant opened at 18:15, they added 20 minutes to our delivery time so we should have received the meal at 18:35, at 18:50 there was so sign of our meal so we called Gurkha Spice, they told us they were too busy and they'd be 10 more minutes, 20 minutes later still no sign so I contacted Just Eat and they said they called them and said the same thing. When the food finally arrived, it was disgusting, not as described and cold, the driver even forgot our drink. Never. Ever. Again.

Had Snapper Curry, Gurkha Lamb Curry, Tarka Dahl, Rice and Chapati. Complimentary Poppadoms and Pickle. Very tasty food. It was a good variation on usual Indian restaurant food. The decor is fairly basic but this is balanced by attentive staff. Good conversation with the proprietor. Second time we have visited. Pleased to recommend

Booked this as a Father's Day treat for the family and really wish I hadn't bothered. Arrived to the restaurant and was met with a stale mouldly smell. Service was non-existent apart from taking our order. Main meal arrived for 7 of us but then had to wait 15 minutes for the naan bread, so had to eat curry without any naan bread - then only 1 naan arrived instead of 5! Whilst tucking into my meal, bit down on a stone. When complained to management, was told this was not a stone but clay (as if this is to be expected). Money taken off the meal but what an absolute shambles, will definitely not be returning and would not recommend this restaurant at all.

We moved to Croydon from Putney. We had had Nepalese for years in a restaurant called Munal and it was our favourite. So we decided to test local Croydon Nepalese. We ordered chicken bhuna and chicken roghan yosh plus two naan breads.20% discount on collection, the owner is a very nice man and the girl who answered the phone appeared to be really well mannered, she brought the bag with the food. So i can't fault servise. We were told it would take 30 mins it took a bit over 45 so a bit of a slip here but it is all right. The main problem was lack of flavour and spice. We are used to full bodied flavours not as hot as Indian but just hot enough and mainly spicy and deep; long lasting and indeed mouth watering, we would just have a bit of sause on the bread and just enjoy... Nothing of that sort here. We ate becaue we were starving after the long wait. Not much difference between both meals, bhuna no flavour, rogan tasted just like tomato sause. Watery, no depth to it, didn't last a second loner than chewing. No buring sensation no tingly or other ones either. We enede up mixing remaining curries as it didn't make any difference to the flavour:(Good points:not heavy oily curry, this one is very light so you feel good after the meal, not completely stuffed and overloaded as it happes with some other curriesGood reasonably sized bit of chicken breastDecent portionsNaan was ok, not that tasty and a bit burned in places but all right all in allCheap we paid 11 pounds with the collection discountEnd game: we will be looking for other place and we do not recommend if you are after what we believe Nepalese curry should be: flavourous, genuine full bodied long lasting experience.I am sorry to leave such feedback for the owner is a nice man but the message is: Get new chief please.

Visited this restaurant after reading good reviews, however found it immediately disappointing. On arrival we were the only ones in the restaurant; the atmosphere was very awkward and decor very shoddy. This wasn't apparent from the outside as the windows are frosted. We waited over an hour before our starters arrived, during which time another couple had a heated argument with the manager and left due to slow service. We were compensated with a free glass of wine and fhe food that eventually arrived was of great quality, it's such a shame that the service didn't match it. Great takeaway option, never again as a dining experience!

Decided to try this place as I saw the TripAdvisor recommendation banner outside. I walked in and immediately the smell of damp hit my nostrils. I ignored it and although the restaurant was empty except for one lone table of four 50 somethings looking worse for wear, and it was a Saturday night, I trusted in the TripAdvisor rating. I requested a menu as I was ordering a takeaway. I was handed a menu which was also damp, it had patches of mildew on it. Again I ignored this and ordered. Had a long 40 minute wait for which no explanation was given nor apology, confusing considering only alcohol was being served to the only people in there. Got home to devour our food. Well how disappointed we were. The poppadoms were fresh and pleasant, however the dip was gloopy and seemed to have almost a skin on top, the "onion salad" was a pot of chopped up onions with two tiny slithers of cucumber skin and no seasoning. The two plain naan breads I ordered were not plain but peshwari, the saag aloo was very strange and tasted and looked like it had korma sauce all over it. My husbands curry was vinegary and his rice bland and unappealing. Very unimpressed. Having read the responses to the other poor reviews, I expect a barrage of insults and abuse from the restaurants management after reading this review, as their customer service skills obviously match their dreadful food.

I wanted to taste some authentic Nepalese food but the server was not knowledgable at all. I ordered the crab claws, which were inspid with far too much garnish and little substance. The naan bread tasted very doughy and uncooked. The rice tasted stale and seemed to have been reheated. The prawn curry that I had was extremely tangy with the tiniest prawns that you have seen. Overall this was a very disappointing meal and expensive for what I received. I will not return. I consider myself to be a bit of a curry addict and have eaten at a lot of restaurants.. My little Welsh mate and I have abandoned our usual habits of eating in a couple of favourites eateries and have decided a bit of a curry odyssey is in order... Where better than tripdvisor to pick the best restaurants in surry?? So you would think...... So... The Gurkha spice in Croydon gets over a 4 'blob' rating and hits our radar and off we bimble. Initial impressions on entry was that of a sparsely furnished cafe (at best laminte floor and vinyl covered seating) and I KNOW this can be deceiving as I have had some great food in some proper dodgy looking places....The welcome was really nice and friendly and before I comment further I would say that the service and warm reception was as good as I have had anywhere. Unfortunaely this is where the '4 blob plus' rating ended. Had the set menu at £9.95 which was good value and took the chicken tikka strter followed by chicken madras naan and rice. Starter was OK but the chicken tasted a little 'catering pack' (hard to explain this but got try... You'll get what I mean,... Again on the main it was what I would describe as a grilled chicken with a hot tomato sauce poured over it.. It really lacked the heat from spice and more from a chilli powder or something similar. Rice was a little sticky but OK and Naan was good... Under normal circumstances (post booze up or rugby) I would have left feeling benign about the place and just woudldn't go back (mainly becasue the staff were so nice) but the over 4 blob rating is just warranted so prompted me to write this. Basically it's an OK local curry house but not worth making a trip for. They also need to stop playing dubious rap/house music from the kitchen (I like this kind of music under normal circs)... When I go to for a curry I expect either quiet 'chilled house' music or a nice twanging sitar!

Went Gurkha Spice on Saturday night 8 oclock, the place was empty. Nevertheless we sat down as previous reviews were very good and this place was once second in croydon. They had the same song on repeat for our whole dining experience, found myself sing it later that night but was extremely frustrating. We had a starter of mixed kebab and onion bhaji, which were ok, nothing special. Infact a little too spicy for my other half. Mains we had pilau rice, sag aloo, bhuna and chickin shaslik. The rice was ok, standard pilau, but the chicken in both dishes were dry, and the bhuna not much flavour at all. Sag aloo was bland. Just wasn't very impressed with it at all. Its a shame cause we were very much looking forward to trying this place, Would not go back and would not order from them, plenty of other better places down the road in croydon.

I eat a lot of Indian food! We visited on a quiet Monday night (the only customers in the restaurant). Given the TripAdvisor ranking I expected high quality innovative food and/or a great atmosphere. Hence I was rather disappointed to find OK standard fair and a run of the mill Indian restaurant. The experience was OK, there was certainly nothing to complain about, the service was fine, very polite and there when needed, the food was 'nice', and it was certainly value for money (£30 for two meals incl. drinks) but ... it just fell below expectation. Anywhere else this would be your average, value for money curry house. If you want a cheap, cheerful and tasty curry I'd recommend Ghurka spice. If you're looking for the 2nd best restaurant in Croydon - I'd suggest you look elsewhere.

We were rudely told that as we were waiting that we wouldn't be allowed to have any of the takeaway offers (it seemed like they were making the rules up as they were going along). They then took 10 minutes to bring us 3 beers. The man on the desk was rude and distracted. Then when we finally got our order after over 30 minutes we got home and it was completely wrong. The restaurant was empty when we went in bar one other table so there was no reason for the awful slow service or inaccurate order. The curry was OK but nothing to write home about. Avoid at all cost. Terrible place and it needs to lose its no 2 spot immediately.

We did have a nice meal here and the staff made us feel very welcome but the service was not the best. A funny little place with ok food. Momos were not the best I have eaten (these were not on the menu I had to ask). Currys were nice but nothing special the nann bread was very good thought. Portion sizes were good also.

Although tiny, this restaurant is a great place for a brilliant curry. I was slightly intimidated by the seemingly "regulars" atmosphere, but it becomes very apparent that the owner and staff at Gurkha Spice pride themselves on personal service. The selection on the menu was more than enough and plenty of kinky curries to choose from (not just the standard ones). I like to choose from the Chef's Specialties, which is what I did. Fabulous curry. The rice was really nice and the saffron was distinguishable. The naan was thick and garlicky. Everything was fresh, garnished with coriander.Atmosphere was a bit tight.. this isn't a very private space to dine, so just know that going in. It was clean and simple, but large tables in a small space make for that communal dining experience. Excellent for a small group. Don't be surprised if it's a bit loud. Look at the pictures... that's just the type of place this seems to be most of the time. Wonderful atmosphere.Overall, very satisfied. Prices were average and service was just fine. Glad it's so close to home. Now if only they delivered with Just-Eat (or similar site). Highly recommended!

If you love Curry then this is the restaurant for you. The food is fresh and delicious and unlike other Indian restaurants not at all oily. The restaurant is small so you get a really personal service.Myself and my boyfriend first discovered this restaurant through a recommendation of a friend and we now only eat Curry from Gurkha. The restaurant is simply decorated and the wine list may not be extensive but the food totally makes up for this. If you are a lover of Curry you must try this place!

I have been going to this restaurant for over 15 years. I have tried mostly all the Indian restaurants in Croydon area, but there is no match to Gurkha spice. The taste of the food is totally different than the food from other restaurants. Any dish you try is freshly prepared, I mean to say that not greasy like most other places. There is a huge selection of dishes in the menu. When ever I get a chance to visit this place, I always order " Gurkha Lamb Speacial". The pieces of lamb is so tender, tasty and melts and tantalises the taste buds in your in your mouth. My wife likes the see food menu. My sons who go there on their own, but when with me as a family, they always order Momo ( lamb dumplings) as a starter and 'Lamb Kutta " with "Gurkha Rice" or "King Prawn Jalfezi".There is no food colouring in their food you will not see any oil at all in the dishes like other places do. These Gurkha people cook the food in a traditional way like they cook back home. You can see the difference straight away.. I love the food from this place and would recommend this place to every curry lover. Where the environment is homely and the staff very friendly not sales people like other places.

I booked this restaurant for a New Years eve meal with my girlfriend to be remembered, based on the existing reviews on Tripadvisor, so felt confident that this would result in an excellent experience. How wrong was I? Well, first impressions weren't good when we were seated by the window. The decor is well, dated to say the least and the smell of damp emanating from the window area was quite unpleasant. Admittedly my girlfriend was the first to really pick up on the issues as having booked the restaurant I think I was blindly hoping things would improve. Did they? In a word, no. Frankly it all went downhill when we were advised - by a grubby looking waiter with his shirt hanging out - that the first wine we ordered (from the extremely limited range) was unavailable. When referred to his manager, the manager came back with the three bottles of wine that were available from the 'white section'. One was a really nasty looking Muscadet that looked like it came from the bargain bin at Aldi, the next was a cheap looking Pinot Grigio and finally the last was a bottle of Mateus.... a Rose... yeah, great mate. We left at this point. Based on the other reviews the food must be biblically good, but we weren't going to wait to find out.

I felt it absolutely necessary to write a review on this restaurant having just had a takeaway from them. The food was ALL very tasty not too oily or overcooked like some I have had, it was a great touch being told by the delivery driver that all foods cooked by this restaurant are not artificially coloured and made from all natural spices.....you can taste the difference,Lastly the value for money was excellent with rivals locally chargeIng more and offering less,If you want a nice Indian and live in Croydon Look no further!!!

we looked around at resturants in Croydon and choose to go there on the reviews. The attention to us was great. The waiters kept coming up to us and if we made eye contact then one would pop over. I think this makes a great diffrence in service. There was 7 of us and we waited for one more. On making the order all together it then took a while before we could order the food. As we placed our order for our meals. Then it seemed a long while for our food order to arrive although I guess they were busy with sorting out deliveries also. The food was good with no complaints and all food arrived together. The menu did seem to have such a variety of foods that it took a while to choose. The waiters were very helpfull to help though

Great food, great service and great prices. What more would you want? For them to be VAT registered maybe? Seriously though I have visited Gurkha Spice on 3 or 4. occasions over the last couple of years whilst on mid week business trips and I have to say the standards never slip. The guys are friendly and attentive and the food is great and well priced. .........Joanna Lumley does not need to fight for these guys!

I have been to the Gurkha once before a couple of months back and absolutely loved the food and the atmosphere, all my family had a brilliant time. I therefore decided to revisit this restaurant with a couple of my girl friends from university. Unfortunatly the experience was far from what i expected and its a real shame to see that the standards have already started to drop. The food was lovely however some dishes were cold apon arrival, the venue looked dated, and very cramped, and our waiter wasnt in the best of moods which reflected on our service! I will however be returning for another visit in the future to see if this was in fact a one off, but i am really disapointed.. such a shame!

My wife held a surprise 40th birthday party for me. The manager and staff were very friendly and nothing was ever too much trouble - very flexible. We basically had the entire restaurant for the entire afternoon. The food was fantastic and they even supplied a birthday cake which was a nice touch. Will definitely be going back to visit as a regular customer.

The staff were top notch and well informed and the surroundings are so beautiful. Price-wise they are so reasonable espcially the 20% discount on sundays and wednesdays. I fully recommend this restaurant, the food is fantastic and the service and ambiance have been there several times food always very good, not the cheapest of places but well worth every penny you spend.

This was the first meal out I have had since the beginning of the pandemic. This place has a fairly large concrete garden area for dining and drinks. The staff here are very hard working, friendly and attentative. I ordered the satay chicken which was very good as was the satay sauce it comes with. The spare ribs were very flavourful, well cooked and were coated in a sticky soy glaze. The chicken garlic with peppers was particularly good. The coating was well seasoned, crispy yet delicate and the chicken itself incredibly tender. I also ordered a beef massamun curry with rice and noodles, all of which tasted great. Drinks were all served nice and cold. Can not fault this place at all and well done to them for providing such an exceptional experience.

I popped in here with my mum for an impromptu lunch during the week. The staff were very friendly and helpful and we decided to order some spring rolls, spicy rice noodles with chicken and a basil stir fry for me. The food arrived steaming hot and was okay but was nothing extraordinary. The prices are very competitive however and the restaurant proved popular, with the tables filling up quickly. I am not sure I would return though because I’ve had better Thai food elsewhere but I’m glad to have tried it.

Curries were always good here when the restaurant was called Rice n Spice but since the change of name and menu the food is possibly even better with an eye on the fresh ingredients, herbs and spices. Now they definitely stand out from the crowd for exquisite flavours and excellence. I highly recommend a visit even if it is a bit off the beaten track, a really nice place to eat out with friends or a special occasion. Delicious.
