Gurkha in North Devon

Went for the first time with some friends that had been before. The waiter was very helpful in helping us choose. The food was served promptly and was excellent.

By far the best Indian I have had in a very long time! I will never use anyone else now! Staff are so amazingly friendly and the food is ALWAYS absolutely delicious! I can not praise this restaurant enough!

On average, usually eat here or have a takeaway at least twice a month sometimes more. Food is always excellent and the service and staff are 1st class and always polite and helpful. Highly recommend this place

I had my birthday meal here. After a couple of emails enquiring about the ability to cater for a gluten-free diet as my wife suffers from coeliac disease, we decided to give it a go. We were very impressed with the quality of food, and apart from the obvious, most of the items on the menu are either gluten-free or can be modified to be gluten-free. Front of house was very helpful, humble and welcoming, a most gracious person, and excellent service from start to finish, we shall definitely be returning 😊

Love this place, the food is fantastic and the staff and management very friendly and helpful. We usually have a takeaway once a fortnight sometimes more and never had a bad meal. Tried loads of different things off the menu and all are excellent. Highly recommend this place

Family meal before the Christmas panto The service was warm,friendly and welcoming the restaurant itself is vibrant and well layed out with plenty of room we had a mixture of dishes and all were very tasty there is a good selection of dishes of ranging heat to suit all pallets they also can accommodate dishes if you are vegan which was fantastic,we ordered to much and were asked if we’d like to take it away which of course we did Great meal thank you

Pre-booked table, arrived and seated immediately. Drinks order taken straightaway and came quickly and then took food order. Food came in good time, order correct and everything was piping hot and delicious. Staff really attentive and super friendly. Lovely atmosphere. Would absolutely recommend and would revisit if we were to come to Barnstaple again.

Love this restaurant, first class service and excellent food. Staff are amazing and nothing is too much trouble. Usually have takeaway from here. Never had a bad meal and the menu has some great selections. I can recommend the Nepali Chilli Chicken it’s one of their most popular. I reckon it’s the best Indian/Nepalese food in Barnstaple so please try it out!

We were recommended this as a good Indian by a staff member at the hotel we are staying at. Tucked away in a side street, it didn't look very fancy -however our experience was amazing!! Very welcoming and attentive staff , prompt service and the food was exceptional. My husband loves Indian food and has eaten in many Indian restaurants. We both agreed it was the best we have ever had. Beautifully cooked with fresh and flavoursome ingredients and such delicious flavours. In fact we loved it so much we are going back again tonight!!!

After reading so many great reviews, and being new to the area, we thought we would treat ourselves to a take away from Gurkha. My husband had the Himalayan Lamb which he thought was delicious. Dissapointingly, I had the Swadiloo Chicken which was one of the worst chicken curries I have ever eaten. The chicken was spongey and very cheap, and the sauce was like tomato soup. Sadly, we won't be visiting again. The garlic naan was nice. Given a 3 star as my husband enjoyed his.

Both me and my partner had the everest curry and it was delicious! His was mixed meat and mine was adapted vegetarian.* Veggies take note, all of the chefs specials can be made vegetarian, so noone misses out *Service was very good, owners are so friendly, restaurant is decorated nicely with traditional background music. We ordered a takeaway for a large party celebration on a Saturday night. The food was delicious, good portions and enjoyed by all tastes. The staff were friendly on pick up and as it was a large order they telephoned to say it would take a bit longer to prepare so we did not have to wait around. Visitors to area but would definitely return if visiting again.

Staying in Barnstaple during a walking holiday and visited the Gurkha Restaurant. We were made very welcome and having selected from the extensive menu enjoyed an excellent meal with great service. The chef was very talented and his cuisine was very tasty, well presented and at a reasonable price. Recommended.

Wow!! Was told of the place by a mate at work as I have only moved to the area recently and I was not disappointed. From the warm welcome, the friendly staff and then the great food, this has to be the best place in Barnstaple to eat.

The food was excellent , the service was excellent and the staff were excellent too. Very attentive very polite. Tucked away from most of the restaurants this gem of a place is an absolute must if you’re in the area. We’ve been holidaying in the area and needed our fix and what a fix we got - the most tasteful Indian food and to be particular Nepalese dining. The warm welcome and the aroma of the food being served got us in the mood. I would recommend all of the dishes on the menu - chicken chilli ❤️ And the Himalayan spiced lamb and chicken, plain and kulcha naan breads. We would visit every week if it weren’t for the 300 odd round trip. I would highly recommend a visit.

I have been to this restaurant many times now and the food is always brilliant. Whether you sit in or have a takeaway it's all lovely. They are very busy at the moment but the service remains top notch! Waiters are very friendly and approachable. Curry's full of flavour and sides delicious! I would recommend this to everyone... Really friendly, accommodating and tasty. The lamb Momo Dumplings and Chicken Chat Puri were particular highlights. We had our little girls with us (3 and 5yrs), they loved the naan bread, korma and Chat Puri. Highly recommended.

Our first visit to the Gurkha since lockdown. What can I say...the food is absolutely delicious cannot be faulted in anyway. Gurkha we have missed you. If anyone is looking for a great Nepali meal please don't leave Barnstaple without a visit.

Food had great flavours all meats very moist and veRy well cooked first visit to this place wont be the last. Cost vey reasonable and service could not be most oblidging.

Three of us went for a celebratory dinner, it was one of our birthdays, on an evening which turned out to have an England football match on. Despite being the only customers dining ( although people popped in occasionally for takeways) the service was solicitous but not overbearing. The meals were excellent, with well sized portions and good flavour. The price was comparable with similar Indian style restaurants and we would definitely return here.

Barnstaple's hidden gem tucked away in a side street near the Pannier Market lies this excellent restaurant. The food was absolutely wonderful and service faultless. The staff displayed a sincere understanding to one of our party who suffers from Motor Neuron Disease - I don't think I have ever been to a restaurant that showed such a dignified and compassionate service. Thank you team. :-)

This restaurant is well worth seeking out. I've had lots of curries and this is up there with the best. Were I to live locally, I'd be back for sure. The vegetarian options are great and my colleague, who had meat, was delighted with hers too. The food tasted really fresh and was light on oil, so I didn't leave with that rather heavy feeling that curries often create. Staff were very friendly, service was quick and the restaurant was clean.

We decided to try Nepalese for a change from Indian and this was a wonderful place for our first experience. From the onset we were met with a warm smiley face and welcomed into the restaurant. We went out here for our first restaurant meal since the end of lockdown and what a good choice it was! The service was excellent, the food freshly prepared and delicious with great flexibility to accomodate our (otherwise fussy) children, too. Very happy to have foud this Nepalese Restaurant in a side road in Barnstaple na deven happier to recommend it wholeheartedly.

Really lovely Nepalese twist on the 'traditional' British curry house. The lamb momos must be tried, and the sherpa and gurkhali dishes are great. Friendly and chatty service, too.

With the focus on Nepalese food it's a great alternative to bog-standard Indian food - a varied menu with something for everyone, excellent Nepalese beer too. Friendly and attentive service. Only a fairly small place, but excellent atmosphere and good pricing.

On holiday and it was the First time since before lockdown that I have been to a restaurant. The restaurant had erected tall screens between tables and co vid rules were followed. Food was tasty, cooked beautifully. Service was excellent. I would certainly visit again.

Too expensive for normal food like momo. Had to pay £4-5 for just 4 pieces of momos. Being Nepalese cuisine, the food was not up to the standard.

We have been to this restaurant a few times but have also been getting a take away once a week recently for a treat. I just love it here. Not only is the food absolutely lovely but the staff are such amazing, wonderful people! They are so friendly and in a world of such doom and gloom at the moment, with such little human interaction they are truly a breath of fresh air.

I've eaten here and had takeaway many times over the last few years and I can hand on heart say I've not got a single bad thing to say about the food or the service. Everything I've eaten has been absolutely superb and the staff are incredibly friendly, warm and welcoming. Would, and do, wholeheartedly recommend that you eat here.

We ordered a takeaway from the Gurkha to celebrate our anniversary whilst on holiday in Devon.The food was wonderful, we had poppadum's and dips, a lamb Sherpa curry and a Gurkali lamb curry with rice, we had onion bhajis and a naan as sides, the portions were large, freshly cooked and very tasty, we loved everything we ordered and if we lived in the area we would go back.

We visited here on our holiday to Devon after finding it online. I had a paneer curry and my boyfriend the base camp curry. Both were full of flavour and absolutely delicious. The staff were friendly and always checked if we needed anything else like drinks etc. Highly recommend to anyone who enjoys curry

Really delicious Nepalese food. I have been a couple of times now and always consistent in standards. The dishes are all very fresh and tasty. Service is excellent. The prices are very reasonable for the quality of the food. The lamb and chicken are always so tender and juicy, all the food is really well cooked. Will definitely keep returning!

Our visit was a real pleasure. The food is very appetising, served by the staff who gave us a warm welcome. The base camp curry is excellent full of flavour. The food and drink prices are reasonable, and we will return when visiting the area again. Table reservations are advised - ring direct to the restaurant, not to miss out!

What can I say - this place is amazing. The quality of food would not go out of place in the centre of London. We always book here when we're in the area. We have tried different dishes each time we have booked. Everything is so clean tasting and the ingredients are top quality. The staff are attentive and pleasant.

On our stay in North Devon we ordered a take-away dinner for four and received friendly and fast service. Everything we ordered was very delicious. We will definitely book a table when we are back in the area. I just loved their palaak paneer.

Lovely food , ambiance and excellent service for our party of 5 yesterday evening . We are staying in Ilfracombe and it was impossible to book anywhere before 8pm we called Ghurka and were so lucky they had space for us as we would never have had this experience otherwise - the currys and service was amazing and we can’t wait to go back ! Thanks so much - we don’t mind the drive out from Ilfracombe where we are staying for such food quality and comfort ! Highly recommend to anyone staying locally and in the surrounding area !!

Me and my partner had our dinner here tonight, I had heard from a workmate that they do the best Tikka Masala, so I ordered this. Me and my partner ordered different naan's, when they arrived, we received a 'basket' of garlic naan, which neither of us ordered! We told the waiter, who said we could have a 'basket' of those for free, and he would bring out the correct naan's that we had ordered, which he did. My 'Tikka Masala' arrived, which looked the correct colour, however when I tasted it, it was very much like a Korma! I asked the waiter what it was and he said it was a Tikka Masala - I couldn't be bothered to argue. It was very heavy on the coconut and very mild - definitely a Korma! So, overall very disappointed that they got my order wrong, better off going to 'Spice' in Bideford!
