I'd booked a table here 3 weeks ago for my 70th birthday and received the last e mail confirming my booking yesterday. We arrived ten minutes before the allotted time only to find the Groes Wen closed for two days. Despite having all my contact details, nobody had the courtesy to let me know. My birthday was ruined.

We really enjoyed our Sunday Lunch at the Groes Wen yesterday. The ambiance was really nice, the meal was lovely and the staff were efficient and caring. What more does one want when having a Sunday away from cooking. Keep it up and thank you.We have been to a few Vintage Inns and although this is not our nearest, it is our favourite so far.

It is alright for what it is. A fairly typical pub/restaurant. Service was prompt and polite. A table for three was rather cramped and out into the walkway which would have been a problem if it had been busy but ok at midday. Food was nothing special but adequate and presented in a reasonable way.

We've eaten here many times and always had a lovely meal. Decided to visit for a Sunday lunch, we all had the 3 meat roast, the meat was lovely the roasted carrots & parsnips good, but the brocolli and extra portion of cauliflower cheese was raw and inedible, I really regretted paying extra for the Cauli cheese. The table next to us left there's as well and commented that there's was also raw. We also didn't like the roasted pepper, onion & courgette mix, at least not on a roast dinner. The brownie dessert was lovely but being served on a flat plate trying to eat it and the icecream was a bit messy, a dessert fork would of been appreciated. We'll go back but probably not for a roast and just choose a different meal.

We enjoyed our meal today. Me, my husband and mother-in-law went out for our first meal togwther since the start of the pandemic. Covid safety was excellent. Staff service was great too. There was a mistake with my meal which was unfortunate, but hey, mistakes happen and it was no massive deal (apart from I couldnt eat the wrong meal because of dietary restrictions). It’s not so much about the mistake, but how it is rectified that is important to me as a consumer. The member of staff serving us ensured it was rectified quickly and the manager even came to apologise which was a great touch. They knocked some of our drinks off the bill by way of apology and to thank us for our understanding (unnecessary, but again a great touch of customer service). The customer service here is second to none and I would recommend coming to the Groes Wen. Love the food, and the staff are excellent. :-) DiolchSteve.

We've used the Groes Wen for many years and it continues to be a reliable food venue with friendly staff. However it's getting pretty pricey - £103 for 4 adults with just one alcoholic drink (a pint of mediocre Tiny Rebel for £5.35) and no deserts. I don't think we'll be back for a while!

I found most things about this pub to be "adequate". We thought the food was was ok, but nothing special, and a little on the expensive side for what it was. The pub itself was, for a chain pub, a nice place to be. The staff were all lovely, helpful, and attentive. Social distancing measures were observed, and hand sanitizer was available at the door. There was little to cater for the vegetarian, though, which we found disappointing. Even a pescitarian would be disappointed to find out that there was pancetta in the Sea Bass dish. My ribeye was quite pink inside for a "medium", but my daughter enjoyed her pizza, and my wife her fish and chips. It's a shame there wasn't more veggie-compatible choice for her though. We downloaded the Vintage Inns app and were given a 20% off voucher with QR code, but the waitress was unable to apply it to our bill, apparently for some technical, system reason, so it went unclaimed. We did have £50 off voucher which we'd won in a raffle, which was accepted, but this was effectively "money" and so shouldn't have had any bearing on the use of the 20% introductory voucher, and this wasn't the reason given for its rejection.I think the staff here are trying really hard, but are hampered by factors beyond their control. So, so-so.

The Groes Wen is a lovely pub/diner. The staff are polite and helpful. However my choice of starter turned out to be not so good. I ordered a special of the day - parma ham with dolcelatte cheese, grilled pear and a pomegranate sauce. Sounded delicious! When it arrived it was a plate of parma ham, toast and watercress. When sent back, the kitchen said it was a mistake on the menu. How can a special of the day be a mistake? I didn't pay for it, and the rest of the meal was fine.

Well what can I say Hubbie booked Sunday lunch as a treat as I usually cook for 8-10 and I've had a flu virus for weeks. Arrived on time some confusion about tables as someone had left a backpack on the table we were meant to have! No issue another table found opposite - tbh in these times I would expect staff to identify backpacks unattended we won't go there on this. Anyway long story short drinks took ages to arrive and when our Sunday roast came all the veg appeared to be beautifully cooked how wrong was I - our carrots were so hard they seemed to have come straight from the ground but hot! This applied to broccoli, cauliflower cheese basically every item, the beef was chewy the only highlight the gravy, we did bring this to the 'manager's attention who immediately rectified the carrots with cooked ones. She said customers like 'al dente' veg totally agree I'm not a fan of over cooked veg I am a fan of veg cooked so you can actually lift with a fork!Anyway table opposite us laughed when they saw me with the 'carrot' and said theirs was the same also the table behind them. They left not long after the optional veg arrived. I asked them if the back pack was theirs they said no so took it to the bar! The manager informed me "if the head chef receives one complaint he ignores it" I explained about the other guests she said they should have complained. Please, please, please if you end up in our situation complain- yes we had one glass of wine and coke taken off the bill this was not our intention what we wanted was a beautifully cooked meal - is that too much to ask!

Most appalling and clueless service ever. We visited mid week early evening 6pm and apart from one table the restaurant was empty, we asked for a table for two. Err have you booked ? No we were just passing after looking on the computer for so long we were going to ask if we could sit down while they sorted out if we could dine finally yes we can fit you in. Walked through an empty restaurant than around the corner right down into the far end by an outside door with draft around our legs. After 20 mins we asked if we could have menus from passing waitress, well I’m not your waitress she is busy taking orders, place still empty another 10 minutes passed still no menus, walked around to bar three members of staff texting on phones including the one I asked for menus asked for menus and they were brought to the table and drinks ordered 40 minutes later no drinks and no order taken. Again asked member of staff coming out of toilet and waitress appeared and took order asked about drinks and she would check but never came back so I went to the bar and our drinks were on the bar by now a flat beer and G&T with no ice. Asked barman who said it’s not his job to deliver drinks it’s down to the waitress oh no ice because ice machine broke week or so ago. The starter arrived some 30 minutes later asked for another drink and same thing happened so I collected it from the bar, after 50 minutes the mains arrived both steaks and they were cold along with the chips and plate. I pointed this out to the waitress who said yes I know and they would reorder but this might take some time as they are busy?? Still the restaurant was empty, I explained that we had been in the place close to two hours and we were now leaving, member of staff was most apologetic we are so busy because of an offer we have on but still the restaurant had maybe half a dozen dinners about the same amount of staff it was like a sketch from the Two Ronnies. I asked if they had another restaurant or bar but no we were in it and the car park was empty so I don’t know where the customers were a most odd place. I really don’t understand the problem and it seems from other comments to have been going on many months I really don’t know how it’s still open. If you want a good meal and good service pop down the road to the Rock and Fountain

We were shown to our table (which was between the fire and radiator so was too warm) and given 2 menus for 6 people, but we didn't need the menus as we had pre ordered. Drinks order taken and drinks delivered. But it was 45 minutes before we asked where our food was. We were told the pre order system had failed so our food was very late. Starters arrived over an hour after sitting down at the table. We also had to chase up our mains which were late. Over 2.5 hours for a meal. We asked for a drink when starter plates were collected. We had to ask again for the drink when mains were brought out before the drink was brought to the table. All food was nice when it arrived, but the service and wait times were poor.

Recently visited here for the first time with friends, first impressions were that it was clean with a comfortable atmosphere. We were greeted by a member of staff and shown to our table, ample time to look at the menu and make our choices. All our food was nicely cooked and presented, would certainly visit here again when in the area. Enjoyable experience food and service 5* only thing that let it down was the toilets, bit more effort needed there, hence 4* rating.

Having been stuck on The Prince of Wales Bridge in a traffic jam due to a serious accident we abandoned our trip to Cardiff. Once traffic was moving again it was very slow so we decided to find a pub to eat to let the traffic ease. This Inn is attractive to look at so we decided to try it. We were greeted by a pleasant waitress. The lunchtime menu was pretty good but we just wanted a snack not a two course meal as priced. My sister and I ordered just a starter of Portobello mushrooms in a cheese sauce with rustic bread and a side order of chips, my husband ordered a steak sandwich and chips. We waited 45 minutes for our meal and we had to go to the bar to chase it up and then we were told it would be 5 mins. When it eventually arrived the food was ok. We were told our side order of chips would be another five minutes but after 10 mins we had nearly finished our meals so we cancelled them. The Portobello mushrooms was clearly a dish that had been reheated in a microwave and the rustic bread was two narrow long thin strips of very hard bread. I don't eat bread but my sister didn’t eat hers as she was frightened of chipping a tooth. My husband’s sandwich was very good, however “the triple cooked chips” appeared to be oven chips. My husband paid the bill at the bar and complained about the length of time we had to wait and he was told there was only one chef on. The pub wasn’t busy and how long does it take to reheat food in a microwave and fry a piece of steak? My husband also said he had never been in such dirty gents toilets which smelt strongly of urine. The urinal was filthy, the extractor was clogged with dirt and the radiator was caked with brown rust and dirt. It was all very disappointing as the pub was very attractive inside & out.

I recently spent a couple of weeks in New York, while they have great food, one thing they do well is a good pie. The Grows Wen do not do a good pie, they do a great pie. Upon my return I visited the GW inn twice in 3 days and both visits were excellent. Well done.

We had a lovely meal and drinks here to celebrate my partners birthday. We were staying 1.5 miles away and walked for some lunch. Food was lovely and reasonable, we also had the 20% code for signing up to their app. The staff were great, and when they got over the lunchtime rush were making sure we were ok and bringing us drinks. Special mention to Ben who went over and above to make sure we were ok, and helped us with organizing a taxi/bus home - a real friendly face and a credit to the team

This is a late review but I visited with my in laws for a meal last Christmas. We have always enjoyed the food here but I was very disappointed last year because despite numerous emails confirming what I could or could not eat they served me a dessert that was not gluten free and which meant I was ill for a week. It is frustrating and I would have been very forgiving but i emailed them after the meal to let them know and to make sure that the same mistake wasn’t made with was someone else that was gluten intolerant but they did not reply. I understand that mistakes happen but it’s very frustrating when they did not apologise and hold their hands up and emailed them after the meal to let them know and to make sure that the same mistake wasn’t made with someone else that was gluten intolerant but they did not reply. I understand that mistakes happen but it’s very frustrating when they did not acknowledge, apologise and learn from this mistake. Such a shame because the food has been nice here in the past but unfortunately not suitable if you are a coeliac/gluten intolerant.

Called in for a light lunch, ordered a simple Caesar salad. Poor portion of romaine lettuce, bacon lardons were left whole, no anchovies with the dish and the Caesar salad dressing looked like salad cream, tasted like salad cream so let's assume it was salad cream.

Four of us are here late afternoon/early evening on the Saturday. Part of the pub had been closed off due to a flood. The lady behind the bar (possible landlady) apologised immediately. She was very chatty and professional.., Really good host. Relaxed atmosphere.

Visited the pub for a nice meal out on a thursday evening to be left with one of the rudest and unattentive servers I have ever met. Gave up on the idea of a pudding after the young girl disappeared around the corner and never returned again. Thats our custom lost!

We live just 500m from this pub and a few weeks ago, paid our first visit in around 3 years. On that occasion we were allowed to use our Gourmet card for drinks providing a generous discount. On that basis, we were persuaded to return this evening, but firmly told that there was no discount for drinks unless ordered with food. Total price for a pint of Tiny Rebel and a half of cider - £7.10 (ouch!). In fairness, the interior looks clean and tidy if lacking in atmosphere and unsurprisingly quiet. To the front there is a patch of grass with tables and chairs. The grass clearly has not been cut for a week to a fortnight. The front of the building now has paint peeling off and is just starting to look a bit worn. If the establishment wishes to set itself at this level, it needs to be outstanding. In terms of quality and value for money, it needs to compete more closely with its neighbour, the Rock and Fountain.

Visited yesterday for a very rare night out with my husband while we were visiting the area. When we arrived the waitress said she would come and get out drink order, but never came back. We eventually had to wave her down to ask if we could order. The food was very good and great value, however, the mains were brought out before the starter plates had been cleared away. After clearing the mains the waitress said she would bring the dessert menus but they never came. The restaurant was empty by this time so it wasn't as if they were busy. Eventually we gave up and when I went to the toilet I saw the waitress at the back with her bag on chatting to a co-worker looking like she was ready to go. We have never been quite so ignored in a restaurant. Its a shame because the food is good. We would have spent a lot more money if we had been given the chance!

I always loved coming for Sunday lunch at the Groes Wen Inn while visiting my grandma and recently stopped here with my mother on our way back to London. I really can't say enough good things about our experience. The food was very tasty and fresh with the perfect mini pudding at the end of the meal. Both Lisa and Ben who served us were friendly kind and attentive and made the lunch and visit a delightful little stop before a long drive. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for great food and service. I will be back next time I am in Wales!

Found this place by chance and am so glad we did. It has a lovely cosy atmosphere with a really relaxed feel. Service was excellent as was the food. There were five of us and unusually, every single plate was cleared. Three main meals were appreciated and two had starters as mains which for people with small appetites was perfect. I had lamb koftas and sweet potato fries and it was gorgeous. Would love to come back!

Disabled parking spaces probably the furthest spaces from the entrance despite plenty of space and parking in general. Caused significant discomfort to a member of our party who cannot move without the aid of a walker. A shame, as the pub and the food are excellent and despite the parking being inadequate, other access arrangements at the pub were pretty good.

Visited before so booking and going back wasn’t going to be a problem. But we shouldn’t of bothered. On arrival we was shown to the table and offered drink which took an age to come and then the waitress had to ask us again what we had ordered. Food order was placed which we was informed no roast available even though it was a Sunday maybe cause they had a busy day. What we did order came fairly quickly as restaurant wasn’t busy and food was lovely. Deserts came and too was nice but coffee which was ordered at the same time was forgotten about which the waitress admitted forgetting to do. Asked for the bill and in the end had to go to the bar to collect. Overall good food but scatty service let the experience down. Don’t think we will be visiting again massive let down.

Well. Seat near the bar eating a lovely meal and enjoying the atmosphere and service, when a group came in who had booked earlier in the week for a specific table. The Groes Wen was very busy at the time, busier than I have seen for a while, and a mishap occurred with the group's booking. The staff member dealing with it had gone to see to their table, but the group had disappeared. They refused to sit at any other table. How rude they were to the staff. Big shout out to the Staff as they are brilliant

Disappointed of the service. We came in, got our drinks, but then we waited for over half an hour just to get an order. There's a couple of waiters/waitresses that walked past us on a few occasions, I had to walk to the bar to let them.know we were ready to make an order. So do we have to go to the bar to make an order or do we wait??

For a place that charges 50-100% more than others, the service just doesn’t live up to expectations. We found ourselves chasing staff around to get served, as waving, shouting didn’t work. It’s was early evening, so we had to ask what they’d run out of. Staff seemed to think a silly question until checked with the kitchen. Initial server didn’t know what Bass or Bitter was, was a real struggle to get out of him what drinks were. Drinks then took 30 minutes. Luckily wed ordered food at the same time. But just getting dessert menus was a work of art and took three people! Food wasn’t warm enough, was clearly warmed up from earlier and over cooked then (potatoes were black). Quality of meat is there, but this place could be so much more with little effort. Guess until people stop going nothing will change.

Called in for a late lunch, ordered the Frito misto. Tempura batter should be light, this batter was so hard I could have built a house with it. Staff behind the bar were not interested in customer service at all. Being a gluten for punishment I then ordered the vegetarian burger with skinny fries. The burger was stone cold and I did not get my skinny fries.
